USC senior Zsofia Erdelyi won the women's division at the 2011 Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon on Dec. 4 on her first attempt at the race.

Erdelyi finished the 26.1 mile course with a winning time of 2:48.58 which becomes more impressive when you understand what she went through before and during the race.

About a half hour before the race, the Trojan distance runner began to have a bloody nose and the race medical staff and USC distance coach Tom Walsh could not get it stopped until about 10 minutes before the race started. That gave her just enough time to reach the starting line.

Undeterred, Erdelyi took off with no further bloody nose issues and maintained a 6-minute pace for the first 18 miles of the race and had a sizeable lead on the field, but at the 18-mile marker she started experiencing severe pain in her side and was forced to run the final eight miles of the race in pain. She still won the race by 39 seconds, but fell short of her goal of achieving the "A standard" of 2:37 to automatically qualify for her native Hungary's Olympic team.

When the 6,000 marathoners left Mandalay Bay at 4 p.m. it was a slighly cool 51 degrees, but by the time they finished the last half of the race running down the Las Vegas Strip, temperatures had dropped into the 40s and the wind had picked up.

Earlier in the fall, Erdelyi ran her first half marathon and won the Long Beach Half Marathon with a time of 1:16.59 on Oct. 9.

Erdelyi has exhausted her cross country eligibility at USC and has trained this fall in preparation of her senior season of track and field at USC, with an ultimate goal of competing for her native Hungary in the marathon at the 2012 Olympics. It is unclear at this time if she will be able to run another marathon before the 2012 track season.

Erdelyi experienced stomach pain early in the 2011 track season and competed in three races before she had surgery to remove a cyst which ended her season. USC appealed to the NCAA for a medical redshirt season in track which was granted.

Erdelyi is the USC record holder in the 5,000m (16:00.11), 10,000m (33:18.75) and the 3,000m steeplechase (10:01.99), as well as the Trojans' all-time leader in the cross country 5K with time of 16:51.90.

This summer Erdelyi won the Hungarian national steeplechase title with a time of 10:27.84. She is expected to compete this year in the 5,000m and 10,000m races for USC.
