July 2, 2016
Adoree’ Jackson in the long jump and Allyson Felix in the 400m advanced to finals tomorrow and Tera Novy placed 11th in the women’s discus throw to highlight USC’s action during the second day of the USA Track & Field Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. today (July 2).
Jackson (USC, 2018) advanced to the men’s long jump finals by coming up big in his final prelims jump today. Jackson opened with a jump of 24-4.50/7.43 (+1.6) to start in 15th place, with the top 12 advancing. His next jump was a slight improvement to 25-1.25/7.65 (+1.8) to move him into 15th. Finally as the second-to-last jumper in the competition, he leaped out to 25-10.75/7.89 (+2.4w) to match his season-best wind-aided mark and move safely into 10th place. He will compete in the finals tomorrow.
Tera Novy (USC, 2016) was in action first today in the women’s discus throw finals. She had three clean throws, but her best mark was 181-3 (55.26m) which earned her an 11th place finish. Novy reached the finals by finishing fifth in the prelims on July 1 with a best mark of 194-6 (59.28m). Also competing in the prelims was Alexandra Collatz (USC, 2015) who placed 19th with a best throw of 174-0 (53.04m).
Felix (USC, 2008) and Jaide Stepter (USC, 2016) were in the first semifinal heat in the women’s 400m dash. The top four of each heat would advance to the finals. Felix took second with a time of 50.31 and Stepter placed fifth with a time of 51.47. After the two heats, Felix was second overall and Stepter was ninth, the first time outside of qualifying for the finals.
In the 400m first round on July 1, Felix took second in her heat to automatically advance with a time of 51.96 which was ninth-fastest among the qualifiers. Stepter automatically advanced by taking third in the third heat and 11th overall with a time of 52.02. Vanessa Jones (USC, 2015) finished sixth in the second heat and 23rd overall with a time of 53.60.

In the women’s 100m dash first round today, Deanna Hill (USC, 2018) took seventh in the second heat and finished 27th overall with a time of 11.36 (+0.8). Faulknor placed 30th and Davis 31st in the women’s 100m dash.
The men’s 800m prelims on July 1 produced a surprising result as Duane Solomon (USC, 2008), the fourth-place finisher at the 2012 Olympics and the second-fastest American ever at this distance, finished 23rd overall with a time of 1:48.71. He was in the first heat, which was the slowest by far, and had led the race through 600m with the top three advancing, but he tied up down the stretch and his fourth-place finish in the slow heat sealed his fate.
