June 17, 2012
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Freshman Alexandra Collatz placed second in the women's discus throw to lead a group of six Trojans at the 2012 U.S. Junior Track and Field Championships hosted by Indiana in Bloomington, Ind. from June 15-17. By placing second, Collatz has earned the right to represent the U.S. at the IAAF World Junior Championships to be held in Barcelona, Spain from July 10-15.
Collatz had a best throw in Friday's discus competition of 171-2 (52.18m) to take second place. The winner of the competition Shelbi Vaughan set a meet record with a throw of 198-9 (60.59m). Collatz had one foul, but had a very consistent series as her other five throws were all between 49.89m and 52.18m.
Freshman Allen Williams placed ninth in the men's 110m HH with a time of 14.13 on June 15. He just missed out on advancing to Saturday's finals.
On Saturday, June 16, freshman Davonte Stewart advanced to Sunday's 200m dash finals by winning his heat with a time of 21.17. His time was the third-fastest of the qualifiers, but he was unable to run in Sunday's finals due to soreness in his knee which he first felt at the NCAA Championships where he advanced to the semifinals.
Also on Saturday, freshman Akawkaw Ndipagbor advanced to finals in the 200m and 400m dashes. She placed fifth in the prelims of the 400m race with a season-best time of 53.40. She then came back to take sixth in the 200m preliminary round with a time of 23.78. On Sunday, Ndipagbor placed eighth in the 400m finals with a time of 54.17. The 200m finals were shortly after the end of the 400m dash, so she was held out of the race because she did not have enough time to recover.
Freshman Myles Andrews ran a 1:51.28 in the 800m prelims on Friday to advance to Saturday's final with the fourth-fastest qualifying time. In the finals, Andrews placed fifth with a time of 1:50.90.
On Friday and Saturday freshman Jemal Williams competed in the men's decathlon, finishing 16th with a PR of 6242 points. Williams totaled 6,188 points in his first decathlon as a Trojan to place 17th at the Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships in May. He ended the first day in Indiana with 3,117 points by running a 12.10 100m dash, long jumping 19-7 (5.97m), setting a PR by two meters in the shot put with a mark of 42-3.50 (12.89m), high jumping 5-7.75 (1.72m) and running a 52.93 400m dash.
