IT HAS BEEN DONE BEFORE... - USC's men's team has just four athletes qualified in five events plus a relay team for the NCAA Championships, but four of the qualifiers finished in the top seven in the preliminary rounds. Last season, USC had five male athletes advance to the NCAA Championships and finished fifth overall with 42 points. USC placed third in 1992 with a six-man team and won the NCAA title in 1943 with a four-man squad. In 1943, USC wasn't going to send a team, its ranks having been thinned by World War II. At the last minute, however, coach Dean Cromwell, who didn't even make the trip, sent a token group of four men to Chicago for the Championships. The four men - sprinter jack Trout and Cliff Bourland, long jumper Edsel Curry and javelin thrower Doug Miller - scored 46 points to earn USC the title.

HARRIS & BROWN ON THE RADAR FOR THE BOWERMAN AWARD - Senior hurdler Aleec Harris has been added to the final 10-man Bowerman Award Watch List, while senior sprinter Aaron Brown is also receiving votes for the award presented annually since 2009 by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) to the most outstanding male and female collegiate track and field athletes in the nation, it was announced by the organization on June 4. Harris hurdled onto the Bowerman list and into the national spotlight after running a wind-legal 13.18 (+1.8) in the 110m HH at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds on May 31. Harris' time is the second-fastest time ever by a college male athlete, trailing only Renaldo Nehemiah's NCAA record of 13.00 set in 1979. Harris also broke his USC school record, the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds record and the Pac-12 record of 13.22 set by Greg Foster in 1978. Harris won the Pac-12 hurdles title with a time of 13.35 on May 18. Brown, the Pac-12 100m and 200m dash champion, gained votes this week after running 10.12 (+0.8) in the 100m dash and 20.16 (+0.5) in the 200m race. Brown's 200m time set the Canadian national record in the event, breaking the old mark of 20.17 set in 1991. Following the NCAA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. from June 11-14, the Bowerman Award semifinalists will be announced on June 23.
