May 13, 2014
USC CREDIT UNION MEN’S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Hanfmann, who also ranks No. 10 in the nation in singles, wasn’t done and faced Oklahoma State’s #96 ranked Sebastian Sachs in a singles match later in the day. Thanks to solid groundstrokes and serves, Hanfmann was in control the entire match and provided the clincher for USC as he took down Sachs 6-1, 6-3. With his singles victory, Hanfmann improved to 21-5 overall in singles play this season and increased his winning streak to seven consecutive matches. On Saturday, Hanfmann was also strong, although both his doubles and singles matches were suspended. Led by Hanfmann, the Trojans will advance to Athens, Ga., where top-seeded USC will face No. 16 seed Columbia at 9 a.m. ET on May 16 in the NCAA Round of 16.
Other USC men’s student-athletes nominated this week included: Viktor Fajayomi (track & field) for placing second in the decathlon at the Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships and recording five legal PRs, one wind-aided PR and matched a PR in another event during the two-day competition; and Max De Vroome (men’s tennis) for recording the clincher against Idaho on Saturday, while also winning his doubles match on Saturday and Sunday as well.
USC CREDIT UNION WOMEN’S STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
The freshman from Norway recorded a PR in the javelin throw where she threw 110-5/33.67m in her final attempt. With only the 800m race remaining and Iuel in second place, the freshman star blazed to a PR of 2:12.43 to win the event by more than two and a half seconds and lock up the Heptathlon Pac-12 Championship. Her heptathlon point total of 5,378 points also moved her into 26th place in the country entering this weekend's action. Iuel’s heroics earned USC 10 points in the women’s team competition for the Pac-12 Track & Field Championships, which continue in Pullman, Wash.
Other USC women’s student-athletes nominated this week included: Zoe Scandalis (women’s tennis) for upsetting Michigan's #9 nationally ranked singles player for a big point in USC's 4-2 win over #17 Michigan; and Annie Park (women’s golf) for tying for 2nd at the West Regional this weekend where USC won for the ninth time this year.
