    USC Adds Katnik, Lopes & Gore To 2015 T&F Recruiting Class

    The USC track and field team has added the national high school leader in the shot put Matt Katnik, heptathlete Lyndsey Lopes and distance runner Amber Gore to its recruiting class, it was announced Director of Track & Field Caryl Smith Gilbert today (April 15).

    Katnik of St. John Bosco in Bellflower, Calif. set a personal best of 71-3.50 (21.72m) in winning the shot put competition at the 2015 Arcadia Invitational on April 11. His throw is just the third in California history over 70 feet and the first since 1997. Katnik also had two throws over 69 feet in the competition. Fellow USC signee Nathan Bultman took second in the competition with a mark of 67-5.50 (19.13).

    Katnik also owns a personal best of 65-5.25 in the 16-pound shot put accomplished on March 26 this year. He also has a PR of 168--9 in the discus throw set at the 2014 Stanford Invitational.

    Katnik has strong family ties to USC as his father John was a former USC center on the football team (1986-87) and his two brothers and a sister graduated from USC. Katnik's USC ties also extend to his cousins which include former USC football lineman Norm Katnick (2001-03), tight end Kurt Katnik (2003) and receiver Brad Walker (2004-07).

    Lopes of Edison HS in Fresno, Calif. won the heptathlon at the 2015 Arcadia Invitational with a personal-best total of 4,984 points. Last season Lopes had a best of 4,982 points in the heptathlon which was the top high school score in the state of California and fifth in the country. Lopes' bests include 14.18 in the 100m HH, 24.52 in the 200m, 2:22.41 in the 800m, 5-6.00 in the high jump, 17-11.00 in the long jump, 100-6 in the javelin throw and 32-6.50 in the shot put. Lopes also has a 400m IH best of 43.67.

    Lopes placed 10th in the multi-events at the 2014 USA T&F Junior Championships in Sacramento, Calif. with a total of 4,680 points. Six of the top 10 finishers were college athletes.



    Gore of Redondo Union HS has an 800m best time of 2:10.76 and took 10th at the 2014 CIF State Championships in the event with a time of 2:12.05. Gore won the 800m race in the Invitational Division at Mt. SAC in 2014 in a meet record time of 2:12.19. She has been an elite runner throughout her career, winning the 800m at the Junior Olympics as a 13 and 14 year old.

    Gore is also an accomplished cross country runner winning the 2014 CIF 5K State Championship with a time of 17:22.00. She also was fourth at the Nike Pre-Nationals with a time of 18:08.77 and placed 45th at the Nike Cross Country Championships with a time of 18:33.00. Also during her senior season of cross country, Gore won the CIF Southern Section three-mile race with a time of 17:03.00 and the Bay League three-mile title with a time of 17:12.26.

    USC had previously announced the signings of men's thrower Nathan Bultman (West Ranch HS), women's hurdler/jumper Jasmyne Graham (East Roosevelt HS), women's jumper Margaux Jones (Redlands HS), women's middle distance runner Mikaela Smith (Clovis North HS) and men's jumper Eric Sloan (Delta College).
