Amalie Iuel is in second place in the heptathlon and Jemal Williams is in 12th place in the decathlon after the first day of the 2015 Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships hosted by UCLA in Westwood, Calif. today (May 9).

The defending Pac-12 heptathlon champion Iuel busted out of the gates to start the day with a PR of 13.80 (+0.3) to win her 100m HH heat and finish second overall. The sophomore Iuel earned 1007 points in the event and trailed only Oregon's Ashlee Moore who ran 13.71 (+1.4) to earn 1020 points.

The high jump didn't provide too much separation in the competition as half the field cleared 5-5.75 (1.67m) and only two of those seven were successful at one height higher (5-7.00). Iuel entered the competition at 5-1 (1.55m) and cleared it in her first attempt. She also cleared 5-2.25 (1.58m) in her first attempt. Iuel then missed her first two attempts at 5-3.25 (1.61m), but calmly cleared the bar in her third and final attempt which would ultimately lead her to earning 108 more points in the event. Again she cleared the next two heights of 5-4.50 (1.64m) and 5-5.75 (1.67m) in her first attempt. Iuel was one of the seven jumpers to clear this height, but she could not get over 5-7.00 (1.70m) and finished earning 818 points in the event. After two events, Iuel stood in fourth place with 1825 points, 14 points out of first place.

The next event for the women was the shot put, Iuel's worst event at the 2014 Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships as she finished 11th. Iuel fouled in her first attempt, but then busted out a three-foot PR of 34-0 (10.36m) in her second attempt. She then bettered her PR with a throw of 34-2.75 (10.43m) in her final attempt to earn 558 points and finish sixth in the event. After three events Iuel stood in fifth place with 2383 points, 229 behind the leader Tatum Souza of UCLA.

The final event on Day 1 for the women was the 200m race. Iuel was in the second heat and blazed to victory with a PR of 23.96 (+1.6) to earn 985 points. She had the fastest time by .73 seconds over the second-place finisher.

Iuel finished the day with 3368 points to stand in second place, just 39 points behind Souza. Iuel's total was a Day 1 PR for her by 182 points. Iuel was in third and trailed the leader at the 2014 Pac-12 Multi-Events by 159 points before coming from behind on Day 2 to capture the title.

The senior Williams began his day by taking fifth in the first heat and 12th overall in the 100m dash with a time of 11.63 (-0.3). That time earned him 725 points.

The next men's event was the long jump and Williams saved his best for last, going 20-3.00/6.17m (-0.7) to earn 624 points in the event. He ran through his first attempt and then had a legal jump of 18-8.50/5.70m in his second which would have earned him 523 points, so his final jump gained him 101 points. Williams finished 13th in the long jump.

The third event for the men was the shot put and Williams had a best throw of 39-1.75 (11.94m). He finished ninth in the event and earned 602 points. His three-event total was 1951 points to stand in 12th place.

The high jump was next and Williams cleared 5-11.25 (1.81m) and 6-0.25 (1.84m) easily. He then passed at 6-1.50 (1.87m) and then jumped over 6-2.75 (1.90m) in his first attempt. It took two attempts, but he then cleared 6-4.00 (1.93m), just 3/4 of an inch off his PR set in March of 2014. Williams could not clear the next height of 6-5.00 (1.96m), so he finished the event tied for seventh clearing 6-4 and earning 740 points. After four events in the decathlon, Williams was in 11th place with 2691 points.

The final event of the day was the men's 400m race. Williams was sixth in the first heat and ninth overall with a time of 50.76. He earned 780 points in the event and finished Day 1 in 12th place with 3471 points. At the 2014 Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships, Williams was in 10th place with 3539 points after Day 1 and finished sixth.

Tomorrow in the final day of the heptathlon, Iuel will compete in the long jump, javelin throw and 800m race. Williams will compete in the decathlon 110m HH, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500m race.
