    Trojans Win Eight Events At Ben Brown Invitational Saturday

    Fulleton, Calif. - USC track and field athletes won eight different events led by Dalilah Muhammad's victories in two hurdles events during a successful final day at the Ben Brown Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. on March 10.

    The senior Muhammad first won the 400m IH with a time of 58.89 and then came back to take the 100m HH title with a time of 13.52, just .03 seconds off her PR set two weeks ago. Freshman Melia Cox was fourth in the 400m IH with a time of 64.11 and fifth in the 100m HH with a time of 14.38.

    Freshman Akawkaw Ndipagbor won the women's 200m race with a time of 23.73.

    "I felt great while running," said Ndipagbor. "It was definitely a different feel from indoor. I'm glad to be finally starting outdoor and focusing on individual events."

    Earlier Ndipagbor placed second in the 100m dash with a time of 11.77. Redshirt freshman Charity Bruce false-started in the 100m race, but ran 25.35 to place seventh in the 200m. Freshmen Kiana Henry (26.93) and Oluwakemi Olonade (28.75) also ran in the event. Another freshman Vanessa Jones took fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 24.92, after placing fifth (second among collegians) with a time of 55.94 in the women's 400m race. Also running the the 400m race were redshirt freshman Malea Malik (60.89), freshman Tessa Granowski (61.61) and Henry (67.66). Former Trojan Elizabeth Olear took third place in the 400m race with a time of 54.39.

     

     

    The shot put competition was won by USC redshirt senior Marissa Minderler with a mark of 48-0.75 (14.65m), while redshirt senior Jade Niemeyer took second with a PR of 44-1.50 (13.45m).

    "The shot put was a supplement to this week's hammer competition," said Minderler. "I haven't been training too much in the shot but was pleased with the result given my PR in the hammer the day before. Our Lady Trojan throws squad is progressing at an excellent rate and we are going be a serious force this year."

    Among the other USC females competing were freshman Erica Capellino who placed third in the 800m race with a PR of 2:13.92, followed by junior Kelly Owen at 17th with a time of 2:21.14, sophomore Natalia Williams at 21st with a time of 2:22.90 and sophomore Jackie Dion at 26th with a time of 2:24.02. Redshirt junior Shelby Buckley was fourth in the 1500m race with a time of 4:36.44, followed by freshman Kira Soderstrom who was 12th with a time of 4:42.99. Sophomore Thea Weiss tied for 10th in the pole vault with a clearance of 11-0.25 (3.36m), while running in the 5000m race for USC were freshman Erin Robinson (18:39.92), freshman Erin Matranga (18:13.96), sophomore Jaclyn Walles (18:55.05) and freshman Austin Lundin (19:55.18).

    Junior Reggie Wyatt won the men's 400m IH race with a time of 50.47, followed by senior Duane Walker in second with a time of 51.82, freshman Sam Barkley in 19th with a time of 55.13 and freshman Jemal Williams in 21sth with a time of 57.37.

    Sophomore Josh Mance who placed sixth at the 2011 NCAAs in the 400m dash won today's event with a time of 46.05, more than 2.5 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Also competing in the race were redshirt sophomore Karan Kanchan (50.31), junior Joseph Laetsch (51.45), freshman Khoren Lawson (52.93) and junior Michael Zuletta (55.14).

    Redshirt senior Bryshon Nellum won the men's 200m dash with a time of 21.21. Other USC runners in the race were redshirt senior Josh Tennefoss (22.57), Kanchan (PR of 22.69), Lawson (22.80), freshman Allen Williams (23.07) and Laetsch (23.12).

    Redshirt sophomore Adrian Rafiee was the other Trojan male to win an event as he captured the 3000m steeplechase title with a time of 9:37.3. Redshirt junior Tony Martinez was fifth with a time of 10:05.1.

    Middle distance runner senior Blake Shaw competed in the 5000m race today and had a PR of 14:30.60 to place 13th, but his time moved him into seventh place on USC's all-time top 10 in the 5000m race. Shaw already ranks third on USC's all-time 1500m list and just outside the top 10 in the 800m race.

    Freshman Myles Andrews had the top collegiate time and finished eighth overall in the men's 800m race with a time of 1:51.91. Also competing for USC in the 800m race were senior James Leckie (1;54.69), junior Aaron Adkins (1:56.45) and junior Spencer Remick (1:57.40).

    Other Trojans competing at the Ben Brown Invitational and their results were freshman Bryan Mercado in the 100m (11.07), junior Jay Porterfield in the 100m (11.59), Williams in the 110m HH (14.83), Barkley in the 110m HH (15.34), Jemal Williams in the 110m HH (15.89), reshirt junior Gregory Woodburn in the 5000m race (16:14.64) and freshman Steven Cherry in the pole vault (13-0.75). Sophomore Ross McDonald and senior Matthew McCormick no-heighted in the pole vault.
