Senior Jesse Williams successfully defended his 2005 NCAA indoor high jump title by clearing 7-6 today (March 11) to win the 2006 NCAA indoor high jump crown at the NCAA Indoor Championships being held in Fayetteville, Ark.
Williams, who was the first USC athlete to win the men's indoor and outdoor titles in the same season in 2005, now has a chance to duplicate that feat this year. He was the only Trojan male athlete at the championships and cleared all of his jumps through his winning height of 7-6 on the first attempt. The 7-6 is a school indoor record.
Senior Virginia Powell, who won the 60m hurdles title for the second consecutive season yesterday, ran in the 60m finals and placed seventh with a time of 7.26. She had run a 7.21 time in the preliminaries yesterday. Her winning time of 7.84 in the 60m hurdles on March 10 was a new women's collegiate record.
Senior Karen Freberg threw the shot 51-5 1/2 to place 13th and freshman Brysun Stately missed in her three attempts at 12-7 1/2 in the pole vault. Stately broke her school record with a pole vault of 13-5 3/4 last week.
The small squad of five USC female track and field athletes that competed at the NCAA Indoor Championships tied for eighth with 21 points. Powell earned 10 in the 60m hurdles and two in the 60m dash, Carol Rodriguez earned eight in the 200m race and Candice Davis earned one in the 60m hurdles.
Even though Williams was the only USC male entered in the competition, his 10 points in the high jump earned the Trojans a tie for 19th place in the team standings.
