USC Opens The Season With A Strong Effort At The Rossi Relays|

The USC track and field team opened the 2012 season at the Rossi Relays in Claremont, Calif. yesterday (Feb. 25) by winning 13 events and Alexandra Collatz highlighted the day by setting the school freshman record in the discus throw.
Collatz placed second in the discus competition with a throw of 176-5 (53.78m), the farthest throw ever by a USC freshman and the fourth-best all-time by a Trojan. The previous standard by a Trojan freshman was 169-4 set by Claudia Paris in 1986.
Freshman Oluwakemi Olonade set a PR in winning the women's triple jump with a mark of 40-9.50 (12.43m). Olonade's jump landed her in 10th place on USC's all-time list in the triple jump.
Other female individuals winning events were sophomore Loudia Laarman (100m dash, 11.65), senior Dalilah Muhammad (100m HH, PR of 13.49) and redshirt senior Marissa Minderler (hammer throw, 177-9). In fact, USC took the top five places in the women's hammer throw with redshirt junior Ashley Pyka taking second (172-4), sophomore Jenny Ozorai third (168-0), Collatz fourth (164-11) and redshirt senior Jade Niemeyer fifth (164-2). Also, redshirt junior Farren Benjamin placed 12th with a PR of 134-2 and redshirt sophomore Stephanie Hoffer took 13th with a PR of 132-0.
The Women of Troy also teamed up to capture two relay titles, winning the 4x100m and the distance medley.
On the men's side, sophomore Ross McDonald won the men's pole vault competition with a clearance of 15-11.25 (4.86m), while senior Tony Burnett won the men's triple jump with a mark of 49-00.25 (14.94m). Freshman Allen Williams was third in the triple jump with a PR of 47-6.25 (14.48m).
Capturing second-place finishes were freshman Marqise Lee in the long jump with a leap of 24-4.25 (7.42m), redshirt junior Tony Martinez in the 3000m with a PR of 8:51.90 and Williams in the 110m HH (14.88).
USC relay teams winning events were the 4x100m, 4x400m, 4x800m and the distance medley.
