    Trojans Run Hot On First Day Of Don Kirby Elite Invitational

    Tynia Gaither set a 200m PR to place second in the women's 200m race tonight. All seven USC women set PRs in the race.

    Andre De Grasse won the men's 200m dash with a PR and Tynia Gaither placed second in the women's 200m race as all seven Trojan women set PRs to highlight the first day of competition at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M. tonight (Feb. 13).

    The junior De Grasse won the men's 200m race with a PR of 20.67 which moves him into second on the NCAA descending order list entering today's action. Junior Just'N Thymes won his heat with a season-best time of 21.45 and placed 10th overall. There were a total of 76 runners in the event and De Grasse won the first heat and it held up through all 19 heats.

    Gaither, a redshirt junior, set a 200m PR of 23.19 and broke the previous track record, but placed second to Oregon's Jenna Prandini who set the new track record at 22.87. Gaither's time moves her into fifth on the NCAA descending order list entering today and including this meet. Every Trojan who competed in the 200m set a PR. Freshman Ky Westbrook placed fourth with a time of 23.44, freshman Deanna Hill PR'd by more than a half second with a time of 23.50 to place fifth, freshman Gabriella Cantrell placed sixth with a time of 23.60, sophomore Destinee Brown had a time of 23.78 to place eighth, sophomore Cameron Pettigrew had a time of 24.62 to place 25th and sophomore Amalie Iuel had a time of 24.65 to place 26th. It was Pettigrew and Iuel's first indoor 200m races for USC. There were 87 women who competed in the 200m race.

     

     

    Redshirt junior Bryan Jordan got things started for USC running in the men's one-mile race, his first indoor competition as a Trojan. Jordan placed seventh in the race with a time of 4:26.67.

    In the men's high jump, freshman Randall Cunningham and senior Michael Krone were both clean through 6-10.25 (2.09m), but missed on all three attempts at 7-00.25 (2.14m) to tie for sixth. In the women's high jump, Iuel placed 25th with a clearance of 5-4.50 (1.64m). Last week she cleared 5-6.00 (1.68m) which is a USC indoor record.

    The Trojans will competing in full-force tomorrow at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational as well as four men's middle distance runners will be racing at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash.
