THIS YEAR: Junior Shana Woods is an extremely talented and versatile athlete who is utilized by the Trojans in a variety of ways. Along with Nia Ali will take aim at USC's heptathlon record this season.
2008: Had a season best of 5,474 in the heptathlon at the Pac-10 Championships on May 10 to place third. She had season bests during the competition in the 200m (24.21), 800m (2:23.13), shot put (34.0) and high jump (5-5 1/4). Had a long jump of 19-2 at the Pac-10s and just missed the cut for the finals. Also threw the javelin 119-6 at the Pac-10s, but did not advance. Had a time of 13.89 in the 100m HH, but just missed making the cut for the finals. She ran the third leg for USC's 4x100m relay team which placed second and qualified for the NCAAs with a time of 44.64. Scored 5,370 points in the heptathlon at the NCAA Championships to finish 16th. Set her PR in the javelin with a throw of 135-4 in the final day of the event on June 14. Had a career-best time of 13.76 in the 100m HH to take second at the Dual Meet on May 3.
2007: Registered the third-best USC heptathlon total of 5,507 points while placing 13th at the NCAA Championships on June 8...she was the top placing freshman and only one other freshman finished the two-day event...she finished 86 points away from All-America honors. Named the Pac-10 Women's Co-Newcomer of the Year along with teammate Shalina Clarke. She placed second in the long jump (20-8) and ran the second leg for USC's winning 4x100m relay team (44.09) in the USC-UCLA Dual Meet on April 28. Placed 9th in the LJ (19-3 1/2) at the Pac-10 Championships and missed scoring by one-half inch. Finished 5th in the heptathlon at the Pac-10 Multis with a total of 5,459 points. Was part of USC's winning 4x100m relay team (44.20) at the Pac-10s. Ran the third leg for USC's winning 4x100m relay team (44.07) and the second leg for the 5th-place 4x400m relay squad (3:38.93) at the NCAA West Regional. In her first heptathlon competition as a Trojan on April 11-12 at the Mt. SAC Relays, Woods placed fifth with a total of 5,393 points, good for fourth on USC's all-time heptathlon list.
HIGH SCHOOL: Had an outstanding high school career at Long Beach Polytechnic High (Calif.) where she earned High School All-America honors, culminating by winning the 2006 USTF Jr. Heptathlon with a high school record 5,333 points, the first high school girl to score over 5,500 points...She defeated 2005 USA junior heptathlon champion Shevell Quinley in the event..Woods ran a leg on Long Beach Poly's 4x400m relay team with a 53-low split...Was the 2004 state long jump champion...Won the pentathlon at the NSC in 2005 and was named to the U.S. team for the Youth Championships in Morocco.
PERSONAL: Shana was born on July 7, 1988 in Long Beach, Calif...Likes to spend her free time watching televison...Lists her favorite movies as Rocky 1-6...Favorite food is shrimp...She is is a Political Science major at USC.
