Tom Walsh enters his 18th year as middle and long distance coach at USC. He also serves as the head women's cross country coach.

During his tenure at USC, the Women of Troy middle and long distance program has consistently been one of the strongest in the nation. This winter Walsh helped USC All-American distance standout Zsofia Erdelyi qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in the marathon for her native country of Hungary. Erdelyi ran a personal-best time of 2:36.56 for the marathon to earn her ticket to the 2012 Olympic Games.

USC middle and long distance athletes have captured All-America honors 23 times under the guidance of coach Walsh. This group is highlighted by eight-time All-American Brigita Langerholc, who captured the NCAA title in the 800 meters in 2001. She also helped the Women of Troy win the team NCAA Championship that same year. Langerholc capped off a remarkable junior year by finishing fourth in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney with a school-record time of 1:58.51.

Another Walsh product was 1500 meter school record-holder Grazyna Penc, a four-time All-American in the 1500m. Penc was runner up at the NCAA Championships in 1999, she finished fourth in 1997 and was third in 1996 and 1998. Polish native Anna Lopaciuch was a two-time 1500m All-American, gaining honors in 1998 and 2000. In 2004 and 2005, Iryna Vashchuk followed the Polish duo of Penc and Lopaciuch with her sixth and seventh place finishes in the 1500m at the NCAA Championships. Julia Budniak became the first Women of Troy athlete to win All-America honors in the 3000m steeplechase, as she finished sixth in 2004.

In 2007, Walsh guided Irek Sekretarski to a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships in the 800m.

Walsh continues to coach USC record-holder Erdelyi in the 3000m steeplechase, 5000m and 10,000m. Erdelyi was an All-American (8th) in the steeplechase in 2009, but since then has moved up to the longer distances.

The USC female middle distance runners had an impressive streak of five-straight Pac-10 1500m champions from 1996-2000. Not to be outdone, the Women of Troy 800m runners had a string of five consecutive Pac-10 champions from 1997-2001.

During the Fall Walsh is the head women's cross country coach. The USC cross country team has sent seven individuals to the NCAA Championships. Cross country All-American Emebet Shiferaw (7th - 1996), Amy Goodwin (coached by Larry Knuth), Sarah Ellis, Brooke Thomas, Vashchuk, Sarah Cocco and Erdelyi all qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships as individuals. The USC cross country team was pivotal in capturing the Lexus Gauntlet points in 2007 and 2008. The Women of Troy cross country team beat rival UCLA at the Pac-10 Championships to help clinch victory for the USC athletic department.

Walsh graduated from USC in 1988, and served as a graduate assistant at his alma mater for three years in the late 1980s. He also served as a track and field consultant for ABC and NBC television during the U.S. track and field Olympic Trials.
