He had left hip surgery on Sept. 21 and right hip surgery on Nov. 9, 2012. He continues to recover from the surgery and it is unknown when he will be able to return to competition. When he returns to action and to full health, Szabo should be a force on the national level for three more seasons. 2012: Admitted to school just before the spring sememster. Had a season-best throw of 220-7 (67.10m) in his first competition of the season on March 23 at the Trojan Invitational to win the Section A competition. That throw moved him into eighth place on USC's all-time hammer throw list. He could not top that mark the rest of the season, but was able to manage the discomfort to have a successful season. He placed second in the hammer with a throw of 205-6 at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet on April 28. He took third place at the Pac-12 Championships with a throw of 207-6. Then threw 206-8 (63.56m) to take seventh at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds and advance to the NCAAs. HIGH SCHOOL: Szabo placed 10th in the hammer at the 2011 European U23 Championships and owns a PR of 232-6 (70.86m) which would put him fourth on USC's all-time list.
