    USC Track & Field Opens The Season Saturday At the Rossi Relays

    Trojan squads should be among the best in the country

    THIS YEAR: Redshirt junior Jovonte Slater is a talented sprinter and jumper that battled back from two seasons of injuries to become a valuable member of the track and field team a year ago.

    2014: Slater made steady improvement throughout the season and ran a 100m dash PR of 10.54 (+1.8) at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 18. He had a season-best long jump of 23-9.50 (7.25m) to place ninth at the Pac-12 Championships on May 17. In his only triple jump competition of the season, he had a jump of 45-8.00 (13.92m) to place third at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet on May 4.

    2013: Slater again battled leg injuries and only competed in two meets. Ran an impressive third leg for USC's winning 4x100m relay team (40.18) at the Dual Meet on April 27. Competed in the long jump at the Pac-12 Championships and had a leap of 23-0.00 (7.01m) to place 12th. This was his first meet jumping in the 2013 season due to injuries.

    2012: Slater saw limited action his first season at USC due to a sports hernia. Had a best long jump of 23-4.50 (7.12m) at the Trojan Invitational on March 24...also ran the leadoff leg on the 4x100m relay team which posted a season-best time of 40.14 on that day. Ran his best 100m dash time of 10.95 at the Beach Classic on March 3.

    HIGH SCHOOL: Slater attended Vista Murrieta HS in Murietta, Calif. He won the California State long jump title with a leap of 24-10.50. He also finished 12th in the 100m dash with a time of 10.80. Slater won the CIF Southern Section LJ title with a PR of 24-11.75, placed second in the 100m dash with a season-best time of 10.61 and third in the 200m dash with a time of 21.47. He also has a wind-aided best 100m time of 10.45 and a PR in the 200m of 21.11. Slater's wind-legal 100m PR is 10.54. He also won the men's long jump at the Nike Nationals with a leap of 23-1.75 to help lead Vista Murrieta to a second place finish in the men's competition.

    PERSONAL: Slater was born on Dec. 11, 1992 in Maywood, Ill....Parents are Dedrick and Cynita and he has four siblings, Jonquil, Jarel, Jordan and Jeanine...Won the football team academic award in high school and helped run a football camp in 2010 for underprivileged youth...His favorite actor is Will Smith, favorite musicians are Linkin Park and Eminem and favorite shows are Attack on Titan, Supernatural and Fullmetal Alchemist...Says Carl Lewis is his sports hero because he held the 100m and LJ world records at the same time...Likes to play video games and is in USC's Electronic Sports Club...Enjoys Chinese and Japanese food and would like to travel to Tokyo someday...He is a Psychology major at USC.
