USC Track & Field Opens The Season Saturday At the Rossi Relays
Trojan squads should be among the best in the country
THIS YEAR: Freshman Jovonte Slater comes to USC with strong credentials as a long jumper and in the sprints.
HIGH SCHOOL: Slater attended Vista Murrieta HS in Murietta, Calif. He won the California State long jump title with a leap of 24-10.50. He also finished 12th in the 100m dash with a time of 10.80. Slater won the CIF Southern Section LJ title with a PR of 24-11.75, placed second in the 100m dash with a season-best time of 10.61 and third in the 200m dash with a time of 21.47. He also has a wind-aided best 100m time of 10.45 and a PR in the 200m of 21.11. Slater's wind-legal 100m PR is 10.54. He also won the men's long jump at the Nike Nationals with a leap of 23-1.75 to help lead Vista Murrieta to a second place finish in the men's competition.
PERSONAL: Slater was born on Dec. 11, 1992 in Bellwood, Ill....Was a 2011 All-Academic track team selection...Won the football team academic award...Helped run a football camp in 2010 for underpriviledge youth...His favorite actor is Will Smith, music group is Linkin Park and movie is Gladiator....Likes to play video games and follow USC sports in his spare time.
