    USC Track & Field Opens The Season Saturday At the Rossi Relays

    Trojan squads should be among the best in the country

    THIS YEAR: Redshirt freshman Jovonte Slater can be a very important part of the Trojan team if he returns to health this season. He is expected to be one of USC's top sprinters and jumpers.

    2012: Slater saw limited action his first season at USC due to a sports hernia. Had a best long jump of 23-4.50 (7.12m) at the Trojan Invitational on March 24...also ran the leadoff leg on the 4x100m relay team which posted a season-best time of 40.14 on that day. Ran his best 100m dash time of 10.95 at the Beach Classic on March 3.

    HIGH SCHOOL: Slater attended Vista Murrieta HS in Murietta, Calif. He won the California State long jump title with a leap of 24-10.50. He also finished 12th in the 100m dash with a time of 10.80. Slater won the CIF Southern Section LJ title with a PR of 24-11.75, placed second in the 100m dash with a season-best time of 10.61 and third in the 200m dash with a time of 21.47. He also has a wind-aided best 100m time of 10.45 and a PR in the 200m of 21.11. Slater's wind-legal 100m PR is 10.54. He also won the men's long jump at the Nike Nationals with a leap of 23-1.75 to help lead Vista Murrieta to a second place finish in the men's competition.

    PERSONAL: Slater was born on Dec. 11, 1992 in Bellwood, Ill....Parents are Dee and Cynita and he has four siblings, Jonquil, Jarel, Jordan and Jeanine...Was a 2011 All-Academic track team selection...Won the football team academic award...Helped run a football camp in 2010 for underpriviledge youth and worked with the USC track team on all community service efforts in 2012...His favorite actor is Will Smith, music group is Linkin Park and movie is Gladiator....Says Carl Lewis is his sports hero because he held the 100m and LJ world records at the same time...Likes to play video games and is in USC's Electronic Sports Club...Is an Interactive Media major at USC...Goals for after USC are to be a successful track athlete, have a successful career, healthy family and to send his children to USC.
