David Sellens III
THIS YEAR: Redshirt junior David Sellens is expected to focus on the hammer throw for the Trojans this season.
2016: Made great strides in the hammer throw during the season. Entered the year with a best of 165-3 and never throw lower than 170-4 in nine meets. Set a PR of 180-6 (55.02m) in placing third in the hammer throw at the California Collegiate on April 2. Took second in the hammer throw at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet on May 1 with a mark of 176-11 (53.92). Placed 12th in the hammer throw at the Pac-12 Championships with a best throw of 171-10 (52.39m).
2015: Sellens competed in the hammer throw and discus for the Trojans in 2015. His top finish in the hammer throw came at the first meet of the year, the Rossi Relays, when he took second with a throw of 152-0 (46.32m). He also finished third in the USC-UCLA Dual Meet with a PR of 165-3 (50.36m). He went on to the Pac-12 Championships, but did not land a legal throw. His best discus throw of the season was 129-1 (39.35m).
2014: Sellens used the 2014 campaign as a redshirt season.
HIGH SCHOOL:Sellens graduated in 2013 from Yreka High in Yreka, Calif. He won the shot put with a mark of 49-8.75 and placed third in the discus with a throw of 148-7 as a senior at the 2013 North Section CIF Championships. Was named the Siskiyou County Athlete of the Week on March 28. He was All-Northern Athletic League in football and track and field. He was Lineman of the Year and Most Valuable Field Athlete of the Year for Yreka..also played basketball. David was elected the Yreka Homecoming King for 2013 and earned a Ford Family Scholarship.
PERSONAL: David Lawrence Sellens III was born on June 26, 1994 in Mt. Shasta, Calif...He is the son of David and Susan Sellens and has three sisters, Amber, Vanessa and Samantha...His hobbies include daily Bible study, playing guitar and singing...His favorite food is chicken...Lists Rudy as his sports hero because he proved success has to do with character not caliber...He is a Sociology major at USC and is involved in Athletes in Action and the Trojan Athletic Senate…He has been placed on the Dean’s List and was an All Pac-12 Academic Honorable Mention...David also volunteers with Swim with Mike, Kicks 4 Kids and Skid Row services. After USC, David hopes to become a teacher and serve a church.
