Trojan Athletics Honored|
Dec. 26, 2001
USC's 27-0 shutout over crosstown football rival UCLA and the Trojans' victory over Kentucky to reach the Elite Eight in the NCAA men's basketball tourney were among the area's Top 10 Sports Moments of 2001, as selected by the Los Angeles Sports Council.
USC was the only team to have more than one moment listed.
The other 8 "moments" (listed chronologically): Washington's Rose Bowl win over Purdue, Michelle Kwan's fourth title at the World Figure Skating Championships, the Kings' advancement to the NHL conference semifinals, the Lakers' second consecutive NBA title, the Sparks' WNBA championship, the first matchup of prep football's top two nationally ranked teams (Long Beach Poly versus De La Salle), Shawn Green's Dodgers single season home run record and the Galaxy's appearance in the MLS Cup.
Each year, the Los Angeles Sports Council--a private, non-profit organization whose mission is to attract world-class sporting events to Southern California--releases a year-end list of the area's top 10 sports moments. To qualify, events from the calendar year must have taken place in the Greater Los Angeles/Orange County area or had to involve a person or team from the area.
