USC Student-Athletes Honored For Community Service
May 5, 2009 The USC women's basketball team and 13 other Trojan student-athletes from a variety of sports were honored by the USC athletic department on Tuesday (May 5) for their significant contributions to the department's community service initiative. They were recognized on the field prior to the USC home baseball game, with the women's basketball presented with the Service Champions trophy for contributing the most hours per student-athlete to the community. Afterwards, the group partook in an appreciation dinner. Since the fall of 2007, USC student-athletes have doubled their efforts to improve the community. This year, they dedicated more than 2,100 hours to a wide variety of athletic department-sponsored community service events. The increase in service outreach was due in large part to the Student-Athlete Advisory Council's efforts to increase the amount of service opportunities and the publicity about them. During the 2008-2009 academic year, several student-athletes served as exemplary role models for their peers and others by building positive relationships with the community and dedicating countless hours to improving it. This past academic year, members of the Women of Troy basketball team participated in Dribble for the Cure, the Pac-10 Skills Clinic, Swim with Mike, Spirits in Action, Operation Clean Slate and Habitat for Humanity.
