USC CREDIT UNION MEN’S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
USC junior Robert Quiroz stepped up huge for the Trojans last week in their two Pac-12 victories over Arizona and Arizona State. On Friday, Quiroz and his partner, Nick Crystal, scored the first points for USC in doubles with an 8-2 victory. Later in the day, Quiroz squared off with Arizona’s Naoki Takeda and picked up the 6-3, 6-1 victory.
On Sunday, Quiroz did not miss a beat and continued his strong play on the road against Utah. Quiroz and Crystal had a little more trouble with their doubles match as they found themselves in a tiebreaker. Eventually, the Men of Troy pulled off the win with a 7-2 decision in the breaker to pocket the 1-0 lead for the Trojans. Later in the day, the #53 ranked Quiroz topped Utah’s Ben Tasevac with a 6-2, 6-4 clincher to wrap up the action in Utah. For Quiroz, Sunday’s victory served as his 15th consecutive singles victory. Led by the efforts of Quiroz, the Trojans went 2-0 on the week and are currently ranked No. 2 in the nation. This week, they will look to continue their success at home on Friday against UCLA.
Other USC men’s student-athletes nominated this week included: Blake Lacey (baseball) for going 4 for 9 over the weekend with 4 RBI's, with all of his RBI’s coming on Sunday.; and Rico Hoey (golf) for posting his fourth straight top 5 with a tie for third at the Western Intercollegiate out of 92 competitors.
