LOS ANGELES - USC men's volleyball freshman Lucas Yoder and the women's sand volleyball duo of senior Kirby Burnham and freshman Sara Hughes were named USC's Student-Athlete's of the Week for March 10-16.
MEN'S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
USC men's volleyball freshman Lucas Yoder had a huge week for the Trojans. In his first match, Yoder and the Trojans dropped a tough loss to No. 4 UCSB on the road despite Yoder's 21 kills and .417 hitting percentage in the five-setter. On Saturday, led by another strong performance by Yoder, the Trojans picked up a victory over crosstown rival No. 7 UCLA. In the match, Yoder had a match-high 20 kills and hit .410,as the Trojans topped the Bruins in four sets. Yoder and USC look to keep the solid play going as they host Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State this week in pivotal MPSF matches.
WOMEN'S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
USC women's sand volleyball pair of senior Kirby Burnham and freshman Sara Hughes had a monster performance for the Trojans this weekend at Merle Norman Stadium. The dominant duo started the week on Thursday against Bakersfield and got stronger throughout the weekend. On Thursday, the pair clinched the overall victory for USC by picking up a 21-12, 21-8 win. Hughes shined in the victory as she recorded 13 kills, 12 digs, and, most impressively, nine service aces. In a doubleheader on Friday, Burnham and Hughes went 1-1 in two matches. In the morning, the two fell, 21-18, 18-21, 17-19, Florida State's top pair of Aurora Davis and Jace Pardon. They recovered very quickly from their morning loss and picked up a three-set win against LMU's pair, 14-21, 21-14, 21-19. Burnham and Hughes were far from done as they recorded four victories to win the USC pairs tournament on Saturday. The Trojan tandem took home the title in the 20-team tournament as they avenged their loss to Davis and Pardon in the championship match. This week, the Women of Troy will travel to Hawaii for four more days of competition.
