Jan. 21, 2013
Sabrina Santamaria of women's tennis and Vladimir Morozov of men's swimming were named USC Student-Athletes of the Week on Monday, Jan. 21 for the week of Jan. 14-20.
Women's Tennis: USC sophomore Sabrina Santamaria collected two championships on Sunday at the Freeman Memorial, first winning the doubles title with teammate Kaitlyn Christian and later winning the singles title as the No. 4 seed in the draw. Santamaria and Christian are the No. 1-ranked singles team in the nation, and worked through teams from UNLV, UNC and UCLA to win the championship. On the singles end, aside from a three-set battle in the quarterfinals against Stanford's Ellen Tsay, #17 Santamaria managed straight-set wins down the line as she went on to deal out a 6-0-, 6-2 upset of #2 Krista Harbebeck of Stanford in the semifinals, before dominating #11 Gina Suarez-Malaguti of UNLC, 6-0, 6-1 to win the singles crown.
Men's Swimming & Diving: Junior All-American Vladimir Morozov has started the spring season at a torrid pace for the No. 5-ranked Trojans, after taking a semester sabbatical in the fall to train in Russia for the World and European Championships. In the most recent meet, the Olympic medalist tied the school record in the 100y breast, lowered his own USC mark in the 100y free and also won the 50y free and the 200y medley relay as the Trojans won the SMU Classic. During the fall, Morozov took home three medals, including two gold, from the 2012 FINA Short Course World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.
