Starts with One

After a brutal 0-5 start to the conference schedule, the Trojans faced a daunting task in 5-0 Cal tonight, but USC was up for the challenge.  "We had a very frustrating couple of weeks," said head coach Andy Enfield.  "I'm very proud of our players because they kept practicing extremely hard.  They've been very enthusiastic, had great attitudes, and they came out and played like that tonight."  USC shot 51.9% and held Cal to 39.3% from the field.  The Trojans led from start to finish and made 16/22 free throws to preserve the victory.  "They deserved to win this game because of how they prepared the last few days," said Enfield.  "They are staying together as a team.  They like each other, and they play for each other.  I am very impressed with that."

The New Nik

Freshman Nikola Jovanovic did a decent Nikola Vucevic impression tonight scoring a career-high 23 points on 8/10 shooting and 7/7 free throws.  "To beat a team like Cal, you need players to have big games.  You need players to step up," said Enfield.  Byron Wesley has been forced to carry the scoring load all season, but he was pleased to share some of the burden with Jovanovic. "Nikola is really talented," said Wesley.  "Down the line, he can be a really great player.  I've been impressed with his work ethic.  He's been in the gym working after practice and before practice, and I think it showed."

Keeping It Clean

Turnovers have been the Trojans' Achilles' heel, but tonight, they flipped the box score by dishing out 18 assists to only 11 turnovers.  "We've had some games where those numbers have been reversed, and we've struggled," said Enfield.  "We did a great job of sharing the basketball and making better decisions."  Julian Jacobs was the "key to the game," according to Enfield, who made a lineup change to bring the freshman off the bench.  Jacobs finished with 4 assists and 0 turnovers.  Meanwhile, starting PG Pe'Shon Howard posted a season-high 10 assists running the show.  "Pe'Shon brings a lot of veteran, savvy play to the point," said Wesley.  "Pe'Shon has been in these situations before.  Pe'Shon just brings a lot of confidence to our team."
