2013 Fall Scrimmage #3: Notes

Fall Camp officially came to an end with a 121-play scrimmage at the Coliseum.
  • Given all the injuries and the proximity to the season opener, the scrimmage was more of a simulation than live football.  The first and second team played against the scout team without tackling.  The final score was 29-0 to the starters, but the third stringers battled hard particularly in the first half.
  • Agholor-Camp20-McG.jpgThe game day simulation started yesterday with the team staying in a downtown hotel.  The Trojans arrived at the Coliseum today and dressed in the locker room.
  • Cody Kessler was given the first series today at quarterback, but again, Lane Kiffin warned the media not to read anything into it.  The reps were basically even, and Max Wittek was more efficient on the afternoon.
  • Final QB stats for the scrimmage: Kessler - 13/22 for 218 yards and 2 TDs/2 INTs; Wittek - 15/20 for 231 yards and 1 TD/0 INT.
  • Kessler had not thrown a Coliseum scrimmage interception until today, but he gave away a pair on deflected passes in the first half.  "The ball gets tipped in the air and you lose all control at that point, but I'm always going to take blame for an interception," Kessler said.  "I could have put a better ball on Marqise [Lee] on both of those."
  • Nevertheless, Kessler is satisfied with the case he made on the field this year.  "I'm going to do what I've done my whole life.  I am going to shut up and just keep working," he said.  "Through all spring, summer and fall, I've just put my life into this team."
  • Wittek bounced back from the Sun Bowl defeat to put together a strong spring and fall as well.  "Ultimately, it is a resume of what we've put on tape through the entire course of camp.  I feel good with that," Wittek said.
  • Sophomore WR Nelson Agholor (pictured) highlighted the day with 9 catches for 250 yards and 3 TDs.  "That was good for Nelson," said Kiffin.  "Nelson had the great spring, a good start to camp, and then kinda had some ups and downs throughout camp."
  • Marqise Lee had 8 catches for 107 yards before re-aggravating his shoulder injury diving for a pass.  However, he explained that the benching was only precautionary, and even lifted his arm above his head again to show the media his range of motion.  "I would have gone back in for sure," said Lee, if it was a real game.  "I would've stayed in actually."
  • Lee has been itching since Pac-12 Media Day to find out who will be named the starting quarterback, but he had no inklings to share.  "This is crazy.  I'm still waiting," said Lee who hopes the answer comes soon. "50/50.  I know y'all don't want to hear 50/50, but that's all I got.  I'm sitting here just like you guys, lost."
  • The defense pitched a shutout led by DL Leonard Williams (4 tackles, 2 TFLs and a sack), OLB Jabari Ruffin (4 tackles), LB Michael Hutchings (3 tackles and a sack) and DL Antwaun Woods (3 tackles including one for loss).
  • Andre Heidari looked at home in the Coliseum making field goals from 21, 41 and 42 yards out.
  • The Trojans are off tomorrow for the first time in almost three weeks.  Hawaii game week begins on Friday.
  • Here is Lane Kiffin from the Coliseum...
