2013 Spring Practice #9: Notes

The Trojans tested out their toughness on a physical day at the Coliseum.
  • New injury news: 17 guys were out including CB Kevon Seymour, OL Jordan Simmons, WR Marqise Lee and WR Darreus Rogers.  RB D.J. Morgan was also out today, but his knee injury "was not as bad as we initially thought," said Lane Kiffin.
  • Cravens-Spring8-McG.jpgFor the first time in three years, Kiffin and the coaches put the healthy players through the "Oklahoma drill," which promotes full-speed, violent contact with ball carriers running downhill at oncoming tacklers.  "Obviously, that's a toughness drill," said Kiffin.  "We're bringing back our attitude."
  • The drill completely changed the intensity level of the practice.  "The coaches wanted to do that for the whole practice, forget the scrimmage," freshman RB Justin Davis joked.  "It definitely set the tone for the offense. We all love it, and it gets us all fired up."
  • The defensive standout from the drill was DL Leonard Williams, who could not be blocked one-on-one by anyone he faced, but for the most part, the offensive line carried the drill and then the scrimmage.  Kiffin declared that the offensive line has put together its best back-to-back practices of the spring.
  • The catalyst for the improvement was moving Marcus Martin to center, and Kiffin sounded resolved that he will stay there.  "The way it's going, we're pretty much headed with Marcus as the center," he said.
  • The quarterback decision is much more cloudy.  Max Wittek scrimmaged for the first time this spring, and posted solid numbers (3/5 for 84 yards and 1 TD).  He also had a perfectly thrown deep post dropped by Victor Blackwell. "I think it's as intense as it will ever be everyday," said Wittek about the competition.  "We all know what it's for."
  • Cody Kessler was excellent again completing 5/9 passes for 99 yards and 2 TDs.  He opened the scrimmage by hitting Nelson Agholor (4 catches for 93 yards and 2 TDs) in stride on a go route for six.
  • The offense was in perfect balance with power running setting up play-action deep balls.  "We were really stretching that run game," said RB Justin Davis (11 carries for 54 yards). "We had a really good showing out there."  Buck Allen rushed for 71 yards on 13 carries.
  • Even without Marqise Lee, the electrifying receiving corps is feasting on the inexperienced corners.  "We have a lot of concern at corner right now," said Kiffin, who likes his safety depth.  "The early departure of Nickell [Robey] really hurt us.  That was kind of the experience we were hoping was coming back.  We'll make the best of it."
  • DL J.R. Tavai led the way with 4 tackles, including 3 for loss and 1.5 sacks).

The Player's Coach

No. 2 USC men's tennis delivered a milestone victory its head coach Peter Smith in Palo Alto today.  The Trojans' 6-1 triumph over Stanford was the 500th career win of Smith's already historic career.

Click here for the complete story.

"When things like this happen it is always humbling because you know how many players and coaches have helped you along the way," Smith said of hitting 500. "It is a privilege to have this job and way of life. Yes, I have been very fortunate. But there's no time to stop and think too much - we have more to do. Fight On!"

As the head coach looks to build on four consecutive national championships, "The Trojan Way," USC's first annual collector's book for athletic support group members, profiled Smith's coaching style.  Called "a modern day John Wooden" by one of his former players, he manages to find the perfect recipe of intensity, inspiration and fun.

Welcome to the Big Show

On the first night of the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, USC junior Vladimir Morozov put together a transcendent performance that had the swimming globe spinning in amazement.  Not only did Morozov become the first Trojan to win an individual national title in the 50y free since 1977, he posted a 17.86 leg in the 4x50y free relay that is the fastest in history, and landed him on SportsCenter's Top 10.

Morozov-NCAA13-Day1-Walt-Middleton.jpgClick here for the complete recap of day one at the NCAA Championships.

While the relay team finished second, Morozov's third leg (video below) made the final results a mere post-script.

"The 50 in the relay was an out of body experience," said Morozov (pictured by Walt Middleton). "I was 100% ready to go physically and mentally and executed the details perfectly. We have never won this relay in history and today we were runner-ups - and all the guys are coming back next year."

Morozov even managed to overshadow his own championship swim in the 50y free.  He recorded the third fastest time ever (18.63) from a flat start.

"As for the individual title, I'm definitely happy to finally become a national champion and post the fastest textile time ever. I can't wait to see what I can do in the 100!"

Here is the amazing Morozov swimming an unmissable third leg...

2013 Spring Practice #8: Notes

Written by Andie Hagemann, USC blog contributor

The Trojans continued the momentum from Tuesday and had a spirited Thursday practice.

  • TE Xavier Grimble will miss the remainder of spring ball. Grimble suffered a chest fracture. The status of Marqise Lee remains day-to-day. RB D.J. Morgan injured his knee towards the end of practice.
  • Summers.jpgWR George Farmer caught a long pass from QB Max Browne. Farmer, who has previously been plagued with injuries, has been able to remain healthy during spring ball. "George has stayed healthy for the most part. He is doing well and making plays," said head coach Lane Kiffin. "We need George to make the hard plays down the field, go up and get the ball, take it away and be physical. We know how fast he is and we know he can run by people but you got to make those plays. He's doing that."
  • The addition of Mike Summers (pictured right by John McGillen) has been an easy adjustment for the Trojan offensive line. "I think Mike [Summers] has really captured the group really well. I think that him and James [Cregg] balance off each other. They come from two different systems," Kiffin said. "It has worked out exactly like we hoped. We have two guys watching the most important group on the team because five play every snap."
  • Though the Trojans are only halfway through spring practices, Summers sees great improvement already with the offensive line. "This position on every football team is filled with guys that are pleasers and that are concerned about the team. They have a selfless attitude," Summers said. "This group of guys are good people. In every coaching situation, once we have been able to develop trust and strengthen our relationship with each other then the production goes up on the field. We are still in that process but I see a lot of good signs right now."
  • Without former defensive leaders like T.J. McDonald and Nickell Robey, linebacker Hayes Pullard has asserted himself into that leadership role. "Hayes definitely has [stepped up as a leader]. I think that started to happen in the bowl practices," Kiffin said. "He made a decision that this was going to be his defense and he became more vocal. You could see him taking over and that is when he moved to Mike also."
  • Pullard credits his spring ball success to the coaching style of new linebackers coach Mike Ekeler. "Coach Ekeler has really been helping me out on my footwork, staying low, playing fundamentally sound and not just going off of raw talent," Pullard said. "I feel good but I still have a lot of room to improve in trying to be a peak performer."

Swimming with Swagger

The USC men's 400y free relay team is the best in the country.  The clock tells them so and they believe it.

"I don't think there is anybody we cannot beat," said junior Jack Wagner, who has arrived at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis with his teammates.

400-Relay-P12-13.jpgWagner teamed with Olympians and All-Americans Vladimir Morozov, Dimitri Colupaev and Cristian Quintero to set a school-record at the Pac-12 Championships. The time of 2:48.66 is 1.5 seconds faster than any other relay team in the country, so the Trojans bear the top seed target.

"I'm sure there are going to be other teams coming for us," said Wagner.  "We've instilled enough fear with that time in the other teams that we have a lot of confidence going in."

Click here for the complete preview of No. 4 USC men's swimming and diving at NCAAs.

If the quartet had a nickname, the Trojan sprinters would be known as "The United Nations."  They represent four different countries: Wagner (USA), Morozov (Russia), Colupaev (Germany) and Quintero (Venezuela).

Despite the diversity of backgrounds, the team swims as one.  "It's a good chemistry between us guys," said Colupaev.  "The harmony is there."

While they all have tasted individual success in the pool, the relay team relies on Morozov as the leader and anchor to take them home.  He is the most decorated swimmer on the team with an Olympic bronze medal, and ranks as USC's fastest ever swimmer in the 50y and 100y free.

"I don't really feel the pressure," said Morozov.  "I feel more comfortable as the anchor.  I am going to do whatever it takes."

Quintero is the newest addition to the band.  While the rest are juniors, he is just a sophomore.  And while the rest are sprinters by trade, Quintero swims longer distances, and traditionally competes in the mile race before the relay.

"I always liked to swim the 100," said Quintero, who won the 200y and 500y free at Pac-12 Championships.  "I like fast events.  Even though I also swim the mile, I feel like it's fun."

Like Quintero, Colupaev is an individual champion.  He won the Pac-12 200y free in 2010 and 2011 only to be unseated by his Venezuelan teammate, but relays push him to swim even faster.

"You blend out all the barriers and limits in your head to catch the guy ahead of you," said Colupaev about relays.  "You don't think much, and you just compete to get your hand on the wall much faster."

Without a senior in the bunch, the 400y free relay team has an eye on history.   "We can leave a mark in college swimming," said Colupaev.

But first, the Trojans must take care of business in Indy.  "Just comes down to doing everything right," said Morozov.  "Think right and do right."

The 2013 USC Pro Day was a successful one as Trojan seniors and former players impressed scouts both in the gym and on the field. Matt Barkley had a solid day working through a variety of throwing drills in his first outing since the end of the regular season. Nickell Robey had a fantastic workout earning a vertical jump of 40.5 inches and running a 4.44 in the 40 yard dash. Here's a look into this year's Pro Day where the Trojans hustled to show NFL scouts their best...

2013 Spring Practice #7: Notes

After a week off for Spring Break, USC returned to the practice field with some rejuvenated bodies.
  • WR Marqise Lee (knee), TE Xavier Grimble (ribs) and CB Kevon Seymour are still not cleared.  FB Soma Vainuku and OL Chad Wheeler are OUT for spring.
  • Dawson-Tackle-Spring4-McG.jpgOn the positive side, QB Max Wittek, DB Su'a Cravens, CB Devian Shelton, DL J.R. Tavai and DL Cody Temple were among those that returned to action.
  • In another defense dominated practice, Lane Kiffin named LB Lamar Dawson (pictured) the MVP of the day.  In fact, he went further and praised him as the "most improved" player through seven practices.  At times, Dawson is starting to work in with the first team now at Will linebacker alongside Hayes Pullard who is the Mike.
  • CB Torin Harris made one of the plays of the day taking a deep ball away from George Farmer for an interception.  During his career at Troy, Harris has had success putting himself in position to make plays, but not getting the ball, so the play today was a positive sign.
  • The offensive line has been shuffled with Marcus Martin moving to center and Max Tuerk playing left guard.  "Marcus did really well in there," said Kiffin.  "Usually there is a transition process, but his was not very long.  He looks like he's been doing it for a long time."
  • The spring shuffle enables Martin and Tuerk to both learn two spots on the line, which Kiffin hopes will create more versatility from the group.  He has also considered trying Aundrey Walker at left guard, but he is happy with how Walker is growing into the left tackle spot after an inconsistent sophomore season.
  • While the quarterbacks did not have much time to throw, freshman Max Browne did air out a perfect deep ball to George Farmer.  Kiffin praised the young quarterback's "deep ball accuracy."
  • Max Wittek on the other hand was "a little bit sore" and felt like "a cybertron" wearing two knee braces, he said.  Kiffin acknowledged that the QB is "not 100%" coming back from a knee injury, but the problem will not get worse.
  • Former LB Malcolm Smith and WR Brandon Carswell attended practice.

No. 4 USC women's sand volleyball takes on No. 1 Pepperdine at 5 p.m. tonight at Merle Norman Stadium.

RobinsonFuller.jpg
Tonight's game is a big one for USC's sand volleyball team. In the final home game of the season, the No. 4-ranked Trojans are set to take on No. 1 Pepperdine, the defending national champions. In only the second season of the program, USC is 9-2 and a win tonight would bring them one step closer to the Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championship in May.

For one member of the team however, tonight's game is significant for another reason. Stevi Robinson is a graduate student at USC with perhaps the most sand volleyball experience of the entire group. She played 111 matches in four years of indoor volleyball as a libero. She was twice voted the West Coast Conference's Defensive Player of the Year. She spent the past summer working out with the USA Beach National Training Team and has played in beach volleyball tournaments all over the world. Last year, she helped her team win the collegiate beach volleyball national championship. Her team was the Pepperdine Waves.

Robinson spent the past four years racking up awards, records, and titles about 30 miles west of USC. In her senior season, USC knocked Pepperdine out of the NCAA Championships, ending Robinson's hopes of winning an indoor national title. The Trojan's victory that night came with lots of help from one Katie Fuller, who, two years later, is now Robinson's partner on the sand.

"It's definitely weird to think that the girl who ended my chance to win an NCAA Championship for indoor is now my partner and we are trying to win a national championship together. It's different but it's really fun. We are good friends now, we talk about everything, and being partners with Katie has made it an easy switch," explains Robinson.

Catching Up with LAX

Written by Sarah Bergstrom, USC blog contributor

The USC women's lacrosse team is midway through their inaugural season and we checked in with head coach Lindsey Munday for a progress report.

LAX.jpg
Sarah Bergstrom (SB): How would you evaluate the success of your team so far this year?

Lindsey Munday (LM): I think we've done really well. The biggest focus for us is improving every single day. From the beginning of the season until now we have improved. There are still things we need to work on. We are competing in games, which is good, but not great. We need to be able to string together a full 60 minutes in order to finish some of these games.

SB: What was your plan at the start of this first season?

LM: The biggest thing for us was to instill confidence in these girls. Even though they are young and they haven't played before, we believe in them so much. We believe in their talents and we think we can really do some great things this season. So our biggest thing as a coaching staff is to instill that belief, the belief that we can do some great things even though we are young and even though it's our first year. We don't want to settle on the same excuses of being too young to succeed.

SB: What were your expectations at the start of the season and how do you measure your team's success?

LM: Our goal is to compete every single day and play the style of lacrosse that we want to play. Win or lose, if you can walk off the field knowing that you fought together, played together, and stuck to the game plan, you can hold your head high. It's when the team deviates from the game plan or when the girls don't play together that we are unhappy with a loss. It's not necessarily about wins or losses but how we are playing, and for us, that's our goal.

SB: Have you found yourself implementing the same style of lacrosse that you learned as a player and coach at Northwestern?

LM: Obviously, Kelly Amonte Hiller is the best in the game. She's incredible and I've learned so much from her. There are absolutely things that are translating to our program here. But we also want to make our own mark. We want to do some things that are unique for USC. I think we have a great opportunity, both as a coaching staff and for the players here, to make this however we want. I think that makes this a very exciting time and I think the girls have really bought into making this their own and leaving a mark on this program.

SB: What is special about this team?

LM: We are fortunate to have really great girls on the team. In terms of the type of student-athletes that we have, I'm really proud of them for what they do in the classroom, off the field in community service, but also what they do on the lacrosse field. That's why we have such big expectations for this year. The girls have a really great mindset too. We're going out there and we're fighting and that's the biggest thing for us in terms of just going out there and playing for a full 60 minutes and not giving up.

SB: What are your goals for the rest of this season and also for the future of this program?

LM: Our biggest focus right now is our conference. The exciting thing is we are only halfway. Sometimes it feels like the season is almost over but we have so much left. Our biggest goal is to learn from the things that we have done well and the things that we need to continue to work on and get better. We need to really fight for our conference games and see what we can do from there. If you get in the conference tournament and win the conference tournament, you have an automatic bid to the NCAAs. So I think every single year conference has to be a major focus for us. But in general, we are only halfway, and if we can get the girls to really buy into improving, both individually and collectively, we are going to be in good shape.

USC women's swimming and diving did not achieve its team championship aspirations in Indianapolis, but the Women of Troy came home with some individual NCAA hardware.

After defending her 500y free title on night one, Haley Anderson cemented her legacy as a legendary Trojan by winning the 1650y free in her final collegiate swim.  She paced the field wire-to-wire to become the program's first ever winner in the event.

"So proud to be a Trojan! Could not have asked for a better way to finish my USC career!! #FightOn," Anderson tweeted.

Barkley's Name to Serve On

During his distinguished four year career at USC, Matt Barkley earned a reputation as a selfless community leader, which will be his enduring legacy at Troy.  To ensure that, the Otis Booth Foundation gave a $5 million gift to the USC Athletic Department to endow a community service program and create a full-time position which will be known as the "Matt Barkley Community Service Coordinator."

Barkley-Community-Bowl2-McG.JPGClick here for the full story.

The community programs will center around USC student-athletes' volunteer work with elementary school kids in the neighborhoods around the university.  In the last three years alone, USC's 650-plus student-athletes have collectively completed more than 8,000 hours of community service, volunteering with a variety of organizations, including Marathon for Kids, Swim With Mike, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, South Central Community Center, Best Buddies and Skid Row homeless shelters, in addition to several elementary schools in south central Los Angeles.

USC's Charles Griffin Cale Director of Athletics' Chair Pat Haden: "We are honored that the board of the Otis Booth Foundation thinks highly enough of the efforts of our student-athletes that they would endow our entire community service program. This gift will allow us to continue our work in our surrounding community while enriching not just our neighborhood, but our student-athletes as well. We get as much as we give."

As Barkley now transitions to the NFL, he is mindful of his Trojan legacy which includes philanthropic trips to Nigeria, South Africa and Haiti.  He also won the Wuerffel Trophy which recognizes the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

"I am honored that USC's new community service coordinator position will carry my name," said Barkley, USC football's first ever three-time captain. "Community service and my faith are very important to me. As Trojan student-athletes, we are fortunate not only for the great opportunities we have at USC, but for the opportunities we have to help those less fortunate and to share with aspiring children our stories of effort, determination and perseverance on the field and in the classroom."

Running Like a Kid Again

"I just want to run fast," Jessica Davis' goal for the season is to the point.

The junior sprinter had her speed taken away last year.  After bursting on the scene as a freshman, including winning the Pac-10 title in the 200m, Davis could not find her sophomore legs thanks to a nagging hamstring injury.

Davis-12-UCLA.jpg"Freshman year was really exciting for me, especially to win Pac-10s, now Pac-12s," said Davis who is the USC freshman record-holder in the 200m.  "I wasn't really focused on anything.  I was just coming in and having fun.  Obviously, sophomore year did not go too great because I got hurt.  This year, I just plan to have another freshman year."

Davis has a "grand opening" planned for the home fans at the Trojan Invitational this Saturday as she takes on some of the nation's top competition including No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 18 Washington.  While she is racing to win, at this stage of the season, the clock will tell the truest tale.

"I don't focus too much on my opponents.  I focus on my time and running faster than I did before."

Already this season, she has posted an 11.7 in the 100m and 23.8 in the 200m.  She set both her PRs - 11.19 in the 100m and 22.84 in the 200m - as a freshman.

The grind to get back to those championship numbers was particularly grueling for Davis who has the sickle cell trait, which she refuses to use as an excuse, but often makes her tired.  Nevertheless, she feels "a lot stronger" than at any other point in her Trojan career.

She also knows that when you have teammates like Bryshon Nellum, who came back from gunshot wounds to his legs to earn an Olympic silver medal, no one can complain about circumstances.  "It just lets you know that you can do anything you set your mind to," she said about Nellum's influence on her.

Davis is all smiles on the track these days.  She is focused on "staying healthy and listening to my coach," and takes pride in wearing the Cardinal and Gold.

"It means everything to me.  I just try to make my school look good.  When I wear my uniform, I wear it proudly and I try to run in it as fast as I can to represent my school, myself and my family."

No. 15 USC men's volleyball snapped a five-match losing skid by upsetting No. 3 Pepperdine at the Lyon Center Thursday night.  While the Trojans are only 5-13 on the season, remarkably, three of the five wins have come against teams that were ranked No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 in the nation at the time.

Click here for the match recap.

Bill Ferguson's team is clearly rebuilding after back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Final Four.  Sophomore setter Micah Christenson (pictured), who served up five aces in the win over the Waves, is a good place to start.

Captain Comeback

USC women's swimming senior Haley Anderson closed the final 15 yards of the 500y free like a champion to defend her NCAA crown on day one in Indianapolis.  The No. 1 Trojans are sixth after the early results.

Click here for the day one recap.

Anderson led at the halfway point, but she was passed in the final 50 only to retake the lead and touch the wall first.  She joins Lindsay Benko Mintenko as the only Trojans with multiple national titles in this race.

"I've been nervous for this race all year, trying to defend it. You never know with the 500. It was such a strong field, it could have been anyone," Anderson said. "You never know when someone will make their move. But at the 250, I was excited that I was out in front and got some confidence. When Amber [McDermott] passed me on the last 50, I said, "Oh shoot," but I always finish fast and felt good down the stretch."

Trojan Track Invitational

The USC track got a facelift recently in preparation for a big spring at Loker Stadium, which will host the crosstown dual meet and the Pac-12 Championships.  First up though, Troy welcomes Texas A&M, Washington, Michigan and other top teams at the Trojan Invitational this Friday and Saturday.

Click here for the complete Trojan Invitational preview.

While the throwing competitions (at West LA College) and the distance races will take place Friday, the crux of the meet is Saturday on campus.  The No. 8 men's team and No. 23 women's team return a combined eight All-Americans although Olympic silver medalist Bryshon Nellum is not expected to run in this event.

The action begins bright and early Saturday morning with the 4x100m relays beginning around 10 a.m. PT.  The Trojans top sprint threats are Women of Troy junior Jessica Davis and men's Olympian Aaron Brown.

Brown represented his native Canada at London 2012.

Top Underdogs

As USC women's swimming and diving begins its national championship quest today, the Trojans are perceived among the favorites as the top ranked team in the country.  While the Women of Troy embrace that goal, they don't share the perception.

Carlson, Kasey UCLApg13 c.jpeg"We still have that underdog attitude going in even though we were ranked No. 1 throughout the whole season," said junior Kasey Carlson (pictured by Paul Goldberg).  "I don't like to put expectations on ourselves, but this year, we can see it in our sights."

Carlson is indicative of the entire Trojans team which appears to be rounding into form at just the right time.  The junior won the Pac-12 title in the 100y breast, and she is a contender in the 50y free and 100y free.

"Everything is coming together.  I'm trying to build off the momentum from a really great Pac-12."

As are the Women of Troy, who posted a school record point total at the conference championship, and narrowly lost the Pac-12 title to Stanford.  The truth is that elite swimmers like Carlson are not the key to winning in Indianapolis.  USC's fortunes will be determined by its depth.

The NCAA scores the top 16 finishers in each race, so head coach Dave Salo's advice to his team is "be average."  By Salo's math, if the Trojans finish fourth in every event, they will be champions.

So, while Olympic silver medalist Haley Anderson is a gold chip to play, the team's fate might just rest with a stellar freshmen class featuring Kendyl Stewart, Kasia Wilk and Jasmine Tosky.

"Our freshmen have been so great in becoming a part of the team so quickly," said Carlson.  "They don't have that typical freshman mentality where you are kind of unknown.  They are going to make really big moves, hopefully this weekend."

With that kind of pressure on young swimmers, Carlson shared a piece of advice for the freshmen, "Not only swim for yourself but compete for USC.   Even if you are not doing so well, you still have to Fight On."

The veterans know all about that championship mentality, and they thrive off it.  Carlson is focused on lowering her personal best times, but she knows that nothing will make her swim as fast as eying her competition.

"It's both a race against the clock and a race against your opponent.  Having that person in the next lane over pushes you to swim faster and touch out someone from Stanford or UCLA."

The NCAA Championships will take place over the next three days in Indianapolis.  Click here for a complete outlook with broadcast times.

Throwback Thursday: One Shining Moment

USC Pro Day on NFL Network and ESPN3

One week from today (Wednesday, March 27), USC Pro Day will be broadcast live on NFL Network and ESPN3.com starting around 11 a.m. PT.  The two networks will tape the indoor strength workouts before taking you to the field for live coverage (estimated at 11:15 a.m. PT) of the running and agility drills plus the individual player workouts, including Matt Barkley's throwing session.

Inside the John McKay Center, the NFL prospects will be measured by height, weight, arm length, hand width and flexibility.  Then, they will show off their leaping ability with the standing long jump and vertical jump before maxing out on bench press reps of 225 pounds.

Outside on the Loker Track Stadium turf, USC players will run the 40 meter dash followed by agility tests like the three-cone drill.  Finally, the athletes will be worked out individually which is when Barkley is expected to throw publicly for the first time since spraining his AC joint at the end of the UCLA game.

USC Pro Day is CLOSED to the public, but NFL Network and ESPN3 (featuring Todd McShay and Trent Dilfer) are providing a window into the action.  We will also have extensive coverage, which we will detail at a later date.

Barkley is expected to throw to a familiar target in Robert Woods.

Meet Justin Davis

Name: Justin DavisJustin Davis.jpg

Position: RB

Class: Freshman

Size: 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds

Age: 17

High School: Lincoln (Stockton, CA)

Game: Davis is a smooth runner that fits immediately into USC's system.  He is not a blazer or monster power back, but he brings balance and patience which gives the offensive line time to open up holes for the neophyte.  He describes himself as a "one cut" runner who "relies on my vision a lot."

Prep Career: Davis had an outstanding high school career running the ball 274 times with 39 touchdowns and 2,613 yards his junior year, followed by 229 carries for 23 touchdowns and 1,806 yards his senior year. Among other awards, he was chosen as a US Army All-American.

Spring Ball: In just the second practice, head coach Lane Kiffin heaped praise on Davis.  He ran for just 11 yards on four carries in the first scrimmage but made a big play leaking out as a receiver for a screen pass.  He broke a finger last week which kept him out of the second scrimmage.

To Quote Davis: "It started out at first that I was kinda lost.  I am starting to get the hang of the thing.  It comes down to its just football.  I've been playing it my whole life."

Here is Davis with our Sarah Bergstrom...

Trojans in Business: Brandon Granville

Written by Andie Hagemann, USC blog contributor

Granville2004.jpgName: Brandon Granville

Resume: Attorney and Men's Basketball Color Commentator

Sport at USC: Basketball

How did you transition from USC to a career in law?

My initial thought was that I would play a couple years overseas then eventually return and go to law school. My father is an attorney so it was a natural transition. There are so many possibilities and different areas that you can get into with a law degree. I was not necessarily sure with what I wanted to do or if I wanted to practice but I knew having a degree would help me with whatever I wanted to do. Ultimately, I am an L.A. kid at heart. I took a year off after USC and went to Loyola Law School. After graduation, I started practicing at a firm in Beverly Hills and eventually started working for my father.

Did you have any previous aspirations to be a sports broadcaster or did the job opportunity find you?

No, I never gave it any consideration before. About three or four years ago, a producer from FOX contacted me because they were looking for people to interview for the television job and someone from USC referred them to me. I eventually decided that I would do it. This year, I was approached to be the color commentator for the radio broadcasts of the USC men's basketball games. I fell into broadcasting and it has been a pleasant surprise.

Is it surreal to be broadcasting games for your alma mater since it was not too long ago that you were on the court playing?

No, not really. I am kind of detached as it has been several years since I played in 2002. My love for the school has grown since I left and my appreciation for everything that the school has provided me has grown as I have gotten older. It is not necessarily surreal. I have always been around the program post-graduation. Coach Cantu's first year as an assistant was my last season at USC. I usually went to a couple of games a year and I was always following the team throughout each season.

Did you apply any of your skills from being a former athlete to your career post-USC?

As an athlete, things are always competitive and that is your nature. Subconsciously, you always look for things that get your competitive juices flowing.  There are a lot of similarities of being an athlete, playing basketball and being in the courtroom. As a lawyer, there is a competitive aspect to it as you have to be able to move on the fly in reaction to things that happen. The same is true on the basketball court, you have to react quickly to things that you may not have expected.

What's next?

I'm not sure being a traditional attorney fulfills everything that I want out of life. I want to get more involved in sports. I enjoy being around sports and it is something that I have grown up being around. I'm not sure of what degree I want to be involved - either working for a school, administration or continue broadcasting. I know I want to be more involved in athletics and probably less involved in the aspects of being a traditional attorney.

USC women's lacrosse has shown remarkable consistency despite its youth this season.  The inaugural Trojans are 5-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play by avoiding any losing streak more than two games.

The Women of Troy's most recent bounce back victory came at the expense of Marquette.  USC hits the road now for a pair of games in Rhode Island at Bryant and Brown.

Here are the highlights from the 12-9 home win over Marquette:

Going Green

USC baseball needed something to change its luck Sunday, so St. Patrick's Day could not have been more perfectly timed.  Usually, Trojans are battling the "luck of the Irish," but for one game at least, the Cardinal and Gold went green to spark a 5-3 defeat of No. 16 Oregon.

Donning the hats below, USC rode a pair of freshmen, starting pitcher Kyle Twomey and shortstop Blake Lacey, to victory.  Twomey pitched eight innings giving up only two earned runs on five hits, while Lacey stroked three hits and scored a run.  Junior catcher Jake Hernandez's three-run double was the decisive blow.

The Trojans are now 15-0 on the season with a five match road trip starting in Hawaii this week.  Here are the highlights from the 18-4 victory over San Jose State...

Perfect 10

2013 Spring Practice #6: Notes

The Trojans went full speed for a 56-play scrimmage in the Coliseum Saturday morning.
  • USC is banged up.  RB Silas Redd has a torn meniscus in his knee which will require surgery.  He will miss the rest of spring football, but should be 100% by fall camp.  OT Chad Wheeler is also out for the remainder of spring.
  • The Trojans have a week off for spring break now which gives the players some time to rehab.  WR Marqise Lee, QB Max Wittek, TE Xavier Grimble, S Su'a Cravens, RB Justin Davis, CB Kevon Seymour, CB Devian Shelton, DL J.R. Tavai and FB Soma Vainuku are among the sidelined.
  • Agholor-Spring3-McG.jpgDL George Uko was named the MVP of practice.  He had a sack, and combined with Leonard Williams to disrupt the first team offense with penetration.
  • On the second team defensive line, nose tackle Kenny Bigelow enjoyed the "best practice" of his two-week USC career, according to Kiffin.  He had two sacks in the scrimmage.  "It felt great," said Bigelow.  "I wanted to come out here and have a dominant day and get my mindset right."
  • Both Kiffin and Bigelow acknowledged that he has struggled a bit with the adjustment, but bright days are ahead for the five-star talent.  Kiffin called his first sack a "coming out play."  "I haven't been to my full potential since I've been out here," said Bigelow.  "That play was a glimpse of what I am really capable of and I think the coaches noticed that."
  • The positives from the defense continue to be in the first team front seven.  LB Hayes Pullard added to his solid spring with a team-high six tackles.
  • The question marks with the new USC defense are mostly at cornerback.  Kevon Seymour and Devian Shelton sat out practice with injuries, and Kiffin stressed that they need to return soon.  Torin Harris was pulled from the first team after getting burned by Nelson Agholor for a 75-yard touchdown, but he did recover to force a fumble with a big hit later in practice.
  • (Photo of Agholor from last Saturday's scrimmage by John McGillen)
  • The biggest offensive improvement came at center where Max Tuerk did not have a single quarterback exchange issue with Cody Kessler.  The two have been practicing snaps "every day until we get it right," Tuerk said.  "There's always room for improvement.  I just gotta get the repetitions and keep working hard."
  • With no snap issues, the offense was able to find its rhythm for drives at a time.  Cody Kessler completed 13 of 19 for 161 yards and a TD.  Agholor (4 catches for 106 yards) was the offensive MVP hauling in that 75-yard TD bomb from Kessler.  Buck Allen carried the run game with 11 attempts for 65 yards and a TD plunge.
  • Running the second team offense, Max Browne completed 6 of 9 for 69 yards most of which came on a 52-yard hookup with fellow freshman Darreus Rogers.
  • Kessler and Browne had time to find the deep ball thanks to better blitz protection from the offensive line.  The unit enjoys learning from new offensive line coach Mike Summers who Tuerk called "a great teacher."
  • On that offensive line, Marcus Martin is starting to work in at center, and he has been a pleasant surprise, according to Kiffin.  Like Tuerk, he is a versatile linemen who can play any of the three interior spots.
  • Here is Lane Kiffin's complete post-scrimmage presser...

Meet Max Browne

Name: Max Browne
Browne.jpg

Position: Quarterback

Class: Freshman

Size: 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds

Age: 18

High School: Skyline HS (Sammamish, Wash.)

Game: Long and lean, Browne does not fit the physical mold of any of the recent USC quarterbacks.  He is built more like former Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett.  Of course, under the Trojan strength and conditioning coaches, he will physically transform during his career, but the coaches are impressed early on with his feet and mobility for a tall quarterback.  All the tools are there to be a special player.

Prep Career: Browne swept up about every accolade you could imagine for a senior in high school. The Gatorade National Player of the Year, USA Today All-USA Offensive Player of the Year, and US Army All American led Skyline to back-to-back state championships. From his sophomore to senior season he threw for 12,953 yards and 146 touchdowns. Browne threw for 384 yards and 4 touchdowns in the state championship his senior year and enrolled early at USC as the number one ranked quarterback in the country.

Spring Ball: The true freshman carries himself like a senior.  He is poised and professional in interviews and strong and commanding in the huddle.  From high school to college, he has been forced to make the adjustment from a shotgun offense to playing under center, but he is rapidly improving in all phases.  With Max Wittek down, Browne is benefiting from the increased reps including throwing a Coliseum touchdown pass to Nelson Agholor in last Saturday's scrimmage.

To Quote Browne: "I'm making my fair share of mistakes but I'm learning from them. That's why I came early, that's why I'm here. I think it's been a good first couple of weeks."

Here is Browne with our Sarah Bergstrom...

With all the freshmen playing significant time, USC has not surprisingly played better in the friendly confines of Dedeaux Field with a 5-4 home record.  The Friday and Saturday starters, Bob Wheatley and Wyatt Strahan, sport sparkling 1.46 and 1.56 ERAs respectively, while the lineup has received some pop from junior James Roberts (pictured) who leads the team with two homeruns and eight RBIs.

2013 Spring Practice #5: Notes

Written by Andie Hagemann, USC blog contributor

The Trojans participated in a high-energy and physical practice on Thursday.

  • Max Wittek, Marqise Lee and Kevon Seymour did not participate in Thursday's practice. Wittek and Lee are expected to return for the next Tuesday practice following spring break. Seymour is suffering from an ankle injury. His status is day-to-day. Silas Redd and Chad Wheeler left practice early after sustaining knee injuries.
  • Since Wittek is still sidelined with a sprained MCL, Cody Kessler and Max Browne are benefiting from the extra reps in practice. "I thought both the quarterbacks did some good things today," said head coach Lane Kiffin. "Cody [Kessler] is really doing a great job and really comes alive in those team settings. Max [Browne] is moving around probably better than we thought this early from pocket movements and getting out of trouble for a tall, young guy."kessler.jpg
  • Quarterback Cody Kessler and center Max Tuerk have been putting in extra hours perfecting the snap. The extra effort is paying off nicely for the duo as they did not fumble during Thursday's practice. "I think it was a lot better practice for the offense than it was on Tuesday. You could tell by the energy from everyone," Kessler said. "All day we didn't fumble one snap and he's [Max Tuerk] been buying into staying after. We've been snapping on our own outside of practice just so we can get that down."
  • Freshman quarterback Max Browne bounced back from a rough Tuesday practice in which he threw a few interceptions. Browne is becoming more comfortable and believes that this was his best practice of spring ball. "This has probably been my best day here but obviously still making a few mental errors," Browne said. "We slowed it down today and didn't install that much so I was able to go out there and play. I felt like today I was the most comfortable and I think it showed in our offense as a whole."
  • Kiffin named tight end Xavier Grimble the MVP of Thursday's practice. "He practiced hurt and was not supposed to go into contact stuff. He not only went in but he did for the entire day," Kiffin said.
  • USC will have one more practice on Saturday in the Coliseum before spring break. Spring practice will resume on Tuesday, March 26.

Emotional Locker Room

USC men's basketball rallied around interim head coach Bob Cantu this season and salvaged some great wins out of a campaign that did not start well.  The Trojans took down the Bruins in Pauley Pavilion and sunk the highly ranked Wildcats in Galen Center en route to a 9-9 finish in the Pac-12 just a year removed from winning one conference game.

The team wanted more though.  The Trojans were building towards a run in Las Vegas that just did not materialize Wednesday night.

3-Points: Utah 69, USC 66

The Trojans season likely ends with a first round loss in the Pac-12 Tournament.

Tricky Utes

Utah built a seven-point halftime lead and held on late by switching defenses constantly and forcing the Trojans into jumpers.  USC did not make a single true jump shot in the first half, but rallied in the second when J.T. Terrell and Eric Wise got hot from the perimeter.  "It was Utah's defense," interim head coach Bob Cantu credited the Utes.  "They did a great job of keying on our key players."  The Trojans made only 3/15 from three and shot 12 fewer free throws for the game.

Without starting center Dewayne Dedmon and back-up big man James Blasczyk, Omar Oraby was forced to play a career-high 35 minutes and responded with 18 points and 10 rebounds, his best statistical game during his time at Troy.  "Of course, it's always hard to play shorthanded...but I had to step up. I had to step in and play as long as I can," said Oraby.  The junior should return next season to form the core of the 2013-14 Trojans with Dedmon, J.T. Terrell and Byron Wesley.

Interim Coach, Permanent Impact

During the Bob Cantu era, the Trojans went 8-9, but his impact was felt at a much deeper level than wins and losses.  "He coached us with passion every day," said Byron Wesley about Cantu. "He's just a good person.  He's someone you want to be around.  I couldn't be more thankful to Cantu for being our coach."  For Cantu, the last two months were a culmination of a long run on the USC bench.  "I have been very fortunate just to be at 'SC for 12 years," Cantu said.  "For me personally, I am thankful to the administration for giving me the opportunity to be an interim coach, to get this experience, and I am thankful to the guys for competing."

And 1...

Looking Forward

At 14-18, the Trojans are unlikely to receive a postseason bid to the NIT, but having one of the nation's toughest schedules gives them an outside shot.  Otherwise, Pat Haden's national coaching search for the next head coach will be the big story of spring.  Stay tuned...

Michael Cooper Resigns

After four seasons as the head coach of USC women's basketball, Michael Cooper has resigned from his position, Athletic Director Pat Haden announced today.  Haden will lead a national search for the new leader of the Women of Troy.

"This program has to move forward, and it should have moved forward under my leadership. The best thing is for me to step down," Cooper said. "I really want to thank the administration here at USC. Pat Haden and Donna Heinel and everyone have been very supportive. Coaching these young women at USC has been a wonderful experience for me. I wish nothing but the best for USC and the women's basketball program."

A 5-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers, Cooper was never able to lead USC to the NCAA Tournament.  The Women of Troy finished 11-20 this season (7-11 in the Pac-12).

"USC women's basketball has a storied heritage, with national championship teams and some of the best players in the history of the sport," said Haden who thanked Cooper for his service. "We believe we should be competing for Pac-12 championships and NCAA bids on a consistent basis.  We will conduct a search to find the right person to help us do that."

Twogood to Go

Legendary USC men's basketball head coach Forrest Twogood will be inducted into the Pac-12 Basketball Hall of Honor this weekend at the conference tournament in Las Vegas.  He led the Trojans to the 1954 Final Four, one of only two appearances in program history, and sits second on USC's all-time wins list (251-179 record at Troy).

Here is a great tribute video for the late Twogood...

Grand Occasion

USC men's basketball has arrived in Las Vegas for the Pac-12 Tournament, and the Trojans enjoyed a spirited practice culminating in a slam dunk session at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Despite not having suspended centers Dewayne Dedmon and James Blasczyk, Bob Cantu anticipates that the Trojans will have enough depth in 7-foot-2 center Omar Oraby and power forwards Eric Wise and Aaron Fuller to cover the front court.  Plus, he can move Ari Stewart, who is back from his thumb injury, to a big man spot if needs be.

"You have to always be prepared to adjust," said interim head coach Bob Cantu about replacing two big men.  "I still feel confident that we can still have success in the tournament."

USC is hoping to win the conference tournament for the second time in school history.  The Trojans ran the table with an undermanned group in 2009 to earn an NCAA bid, and they have been the runners-up three times since the tournament returned in 2002.

No. 7 USC and No. 10 Utah will tip-off Wednesday at 6 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Networks with the winner advancing to play No. 2 Cal at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

2013 Spring Practice #4: Notes

Written by Andie Hagemann, USC blog contributor

The Trojans practiced in full pads today while braving the warm weather.
  • Former USC offensive tackle, Tony Boselli (pictured right), spoke to the team after practice about representing USC and the importance of the football program. Boselli played for the Trojans from 1991 to 1994 and was a two-time All-American.DSC_9609.JPG
  • The fourth spring practice lacked the energy of the first week. The Trojans practiced for the second time in pads and participated in a physical practice. "I didn't think the offense practiced very well mentally and weren't very into it the way they had been in the three practices before," said head coach Lane Kiffin. "The defensive front seven really was [into it], front eight if you count Su'a [Cravens], and played really well today."
  • Cravens' performance in spring ball thus far has impressed Kiffin and other coaches. "One of the offensive coaches said he looked like a senior in college out there," Kiffin said. "He is a really special player. There is a reason why he was the National Defensive Player of the Year. He is one of those unique guys that is able to soak everything up. He is really focused on being a great student-athlete and I think we have the all-around package."
  • The USC defense and Cravens are easily adjusting to the new scheme and playbook. Cravens has spent time at both nickel back and safety. At this point, he is favoring nickel back because he is able to play a little more freely. "Today in practice, things were going my way a little bit. I had two interceptions," said freshman safety Su'a Cravens. "The playbook is really simple and Coach [Pendergast] keeps it really easy for us. I have been working with Josh Shaw and he has taken me under his wing and has helped me out with all the plays."
  • Both Max Wittek and Marqise Lee have sustained knee injuries. "Both did not practice today," Kiffin said. "We anticipate both of them being back if not this week then the next Tuesday practice."
  • Max Wittek was injured during Saturday's practice and suffered a sprained MCL. Wittek remarked that it was odd to miss practice as he never has during his entire time at USC. "Obviously you wouldn't want anything to be torn but if there is ever a time for this to happen, I guess it would be right now," Wittek said. "I am pretty positive about it and hopefully I can be back by Thursday maybe Saturday. I am going to spend as much time mentally with my teammates, a lot more film work with individual players and talking to people on the sideline."
  • After practice, media members attended a dinner with the new USC coaches and freshman players at the Galen Dining Center.

Stevens Academic Center Spotlight: Christine Irvin

Written by Sarah Bergstrom, USC blog contributor

USC athletes are more than just champions on the field, court, diamond, and pool, they're champions in the classroom as well. Each week, we will get to know one of these scholarly Trojans a little better in our student-athlete spotlight.

Name: Christine Irvin
Irvin.jpg
Year: Freshman
Sport: Women's Sand Volleyball
Major: Environmental Studies
GPA: 3.56

Sarah Bergstrom (SB): Eight of your relatives have gone to USC, and you have a lot of successful athletes in your family tree, why did you choose to come here?

Christine Irvin (CI): I always wanted a school with a lot of school spirit, and it's also so nice to be close to home. USC is near my family and near the beach, which is especially important with my sport. A lot of schools haven't started a beach volleyball program yet. When I heard USC did, it seemed like the perfect opportunity. It was one of my top choices already as a college and then also had the sport I wanted to play.

SB: Your sister played sand volleyball last year at USC, did she pass on any wisdom in helping you transition to college and playing a collegiate sport?

CI: I've grown up knowing the commitment of playing a college sport because my dad, my brother, and sister all played. So I'm used to hearing about their busy and hectic schedules. They've all taught me the importance of time management. They are all really passionate about the sport and they've helped me a lot in becoming a college volleyball player.

SB: The transition from high school to college can be difficult for a non-student-athlete, how has your transition been as an athlete?

CI: It's definitely been hard at points just because everything is so busy. But it's also been really enjoyable, having the support of my team and having something to do. I think I would be bored if I wasn't playing volleyball. It can be a lot to juggle but it's definitely worth it.

SB: What do you think is the most important skill in managing volleyball and school?

CI: Positivity and time management. Sometimes when you get frustrated or tired you may not want to go to class, or you may get annoyed at practice. I've found if you're positive about everything it makes it so much easier to manage the business of both.

SB: Where do you want your environmental studies major to take you?

CI: I'm open to a lot of things but I'm not sure yet. I'm really interested in marine biology. I'd also like to work for a company like National Geographic or in the field of ecotourism. Those are all things I would love to do someday.

No. 12 USC women's tennis did not let dropping the doubles' point or a rain delay slow down its quest to beat the Bruins.  The Women of Troy defeated No. 4 UCLA in Westwood last Friday to move to 10-2 on the season.

The Trojans' singles aces were key to the rivalry victory.  Finally healthy and in form, Sabrina Santamaria, Danielle Lao and Zoe Scandalis did not drop a set en route to wins at the top three spots.

USC will occupy Marks Stadium for a trio of home matches this week with Texas (Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.), Colorado (Friday at 1:30 p.m.) and Utah (Saturday at Noon).

Dedmon and Blasczyk Suspended

USC interim head coach Bob Cantu has suspended centers Dewayne Dedmon and James Blasczyk from all team activities indefinitely for violating a team rule.

"Separately, we are aware of the Spokane investigation into an alleged incident involving those players and we are cooperating with the authorities to determine the facts," said Cantu.  "Until we learn all the facts, it would be inappropriate to comment further."

The Trojans open the Pac-12 Tournament Wednesday night at 6 p.m. against Utah.

Meet Kenny Bigelow

Bigelow1-Spring2-McG.jpgName - Kenny Bigelow

Position - Defensive Line

Class - Freshman

Size - 6-foot-3 and 295 pounds

Age - 17

High School - Eastern Christian Academy (Elkton, MD)

Game - Bigelow is already built like a college player, which is rare for someone so young.  He has the strength and athleticism to play any of three spots up front for Clancy Pendergast, but he is starting out at nose tackle.

Prep Career - At Red Lion Christian Academy and Eastern Christian Academy, Bigelow split time at defensive line and tight end.  His high school only played three games during his senior season, but he was still named a U.S. Army All-American.

Spring Ball - While he was on the wrong end of a "welcome to college" pancake block from Jordan Simmons during the first practice, Bigelow is a big time talent.  Don't expect him to redshirt.  The defensive line lacks depth and Coach O prefers a two-deep rotation, so Bigelow should push Antwaun Woods at the nose.

To Quote Bigelow - "I never want to be satisfied with my performance. I want to get better and better everyday and someday be a great Trojan."

Here is Bigelow with our Andie Hagemann...

The Trojan Family lost a dear friend when Jack Beasley, a Coliseum elevator for five decades, died at the age of 86.  Beasley was the type of behind-the-scenes character that makes USC football games so special.

LA Times columnist T.J. Simers immortalized Beasley in a column this week.

2013 Spring Practice #3: Notes

The Trojans scrimmaged with live tackling in the Coliseum for the first time this spring.
  • The offense only scored one touchdown in 52 plays thanks to Clancy Pendergast's attack-minded 5-2 scheme which was living in the backfield, including five sacks. (Pendergast pictured from Thursday night)
  • Pendergast-Spring2-McG.jpgQB Max Wittek and WR Marqise Lee both suffered knee injuries during practice and sat out the scrimmage.  Lane Kiffin announced that both will have further testing before a diagnosis is announced.  Lee stood and cheered his teammates throughout the scrimmage, while Wittek rested on the trainer's table with ice on his knee.
  • With Wittek down, Cody Kessler took full advantage of his increased opportunity.  He completed 12 of 15 passes for 192 yards.  "He kind of did what Cody does which is show up in these formats," said Kiffin about Kessler.  "He's always been a gamer."
  • Freshman QB Max Browne was less effective in terms of moving the ball, but he did connect with Nelson Agholor on a 43-yard TD strike.  He also made a perfect throw for a potential six that freshman WR Darreus Rogers dropped.  Browne finished 2/7 for 48 yards and a TD.
  • George Farmer led the way at receiver with three catches for 74 yards.  D.J. Morgan (4 carries for 16 yards) and Justin Davis (4 carries for 11 yards) were the primary ball carriers, but there were no big plays in the running game.
  • The offensive rhythm was consistently halted by center-quarterback exchange issues.  Max Tuerk is still adjusting to his new role after moving from left tackle this spring.  "Obviously, we don't like it, but it's not a major concern," said Kiffin about his new center.  "We need to fix it."  Kessler said he and Tuerk were going to practice 100 more snaps after the scrimmage.
  • The offensive line as a unit "has a ways to go." Kiffin does like the improvement of OT Chad Wheeler who has gained 64 pounds in about two years, according to Kiffin.
  • The real stars of the day were on the defensive side of the ball.  Lamar Dawson was named the practice MVP recording a team-high six tackles, including two for loss, playing back-up middle linebacker.  "He's really taking to the new scheme playing aggressive in the run," said Kiffin about Dawson.  "As those guys go into their third year, a lot of time that's when they really step it up and I think Lamar is one of those guys."
  • The stand-up outside linebacker/defensive end hybrids have adjusted quickly.  Morgan Breslin had four tackles for loss and Devon Kennard recorded a sack.  "I love it so far," said Kennard about the new defense.  "It definitely brings the best out of everyone.  It gets us in the best situation to make plays."
  • In the secondary, freshman Su'a Cravens recorded four tackles and played the nickel spot with the first team.  Defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast compared Cravens body type to former NFL All-Pro safety Darren Woodson, who he coached in Dallas.  Woodson played nickel for the Cowboys because "we liked his length and ability to tackle on the perimeter," said Pendergast.  "That's one spot we want to take a look at Su'a at.  Obviously, we want to get the best 11 guys on the field, and we feel like he could possibly be one of those guys."
  • Here is Lane Kiffin who broke down the state of the roster by position group after the first week of spring practice...

Meet Su'a Cravens

Cravens-Spring2-McG.jpgName: Su'a Cravens

Position: Safety

Class: Freshman

Size: 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds

Age: 17

High School: Vista Murrieta (Los Angeles)

Scouting Report: Cravens is a graceful athlete built in a different mold than the recent crop of star safeties at USC.  While he is tall, he is not as long as T.J. McDonald or Taylor Mays.  He glides around the field, but arrives violently when the ball is in his area.

Prep Career: As a versatile player, he was all over the field, playing DB, LB, WR and RB. He made 97 tackles as a senior while also accounting for 542 yards and 14 touchdowns on the other side of the ball. He was USA Today's All-USA Defensive Player of the Year, the Gatorade California Player of the Year, and a U.S. Army All-American.

Spring Ball: Cravens will be in the mix to earn a starting spot from day one.  New defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast made it clear that he has no problem starting a true freshman if he is the best player at the spot.  Currently, Cravens is playing safety with the twos behind Josh Shaw and Demetrius Wright, but he has earned early praise from Lane Kiffin.

Josh Shaw on Cravens: "Su'a is living up to it by all means.  Su'a is a smart kid.  He catches up really fast in the meeting room and he translates it out here."

Here is Cravens in his own words with our Sarah Bergstrom...

2013 Spring Practice #2: Notes

The weather stayed dry just long enough for the Trojans to fit in the second practice of spring...
  • The intensity level was excellent again tonight.  The team seems to have a renewed spirit, and the roster is loaded with players that have something to prove.  In particular, Lane Kiffin praised the play of early entrants RB Justin Davis, S Su'a Cravens and CB Chris Hawkins.
  • From the veterans, RB Silas Redd, who flashed his top end speed on a long sideline run, was the offensive MVP of the practice, while Kiffin named DL George Uko the defensive MVP.
  • Offensively, Nelson Agholor made several big plays, and appears ready to step up into the number two receiver role.  "I'm not getting satisfied," said Agholor about his slight change in approach.  "At first I wanted to contribute, now I just want to continue to grow."
  • Agholor and the rest of the receiving corps will have to produce so defenses cannot key solely on Marqise Lee.  "Myself and the rest of the receiving corps, we want to rise to the occasion and play at the level he is playing at," Agholor said about Lee.  "He's going to make us better."
  • Watch out for Victor Blackwell as a sleeper candidate for the third receiving role.  He has flashed big play ability in each of the first two practices.  He also has excellent chemistry with his high school quarterback Max Wittek.
  • Josh Shaw changed his number and his position this spring.  "I love it!  Update my swag a little bit," he said about his No. 6.
  • He enjoyed playing cornerback, but safety is a natural position for him.  "I embrace it.  I love it back here playing safety.  It's kind of like you are a general.  You have to know so much."
  • T.J. McDonald, who attended practice tonight, was a major influence on Shaw from the moment he arrived at USC.  "T.J. taught me so much about the game that I didn't know before that I am taking with me now."
  • Shaw is returning the favor with an extremely young secondary group around him.  "What do I want my legacy to be when I leave here?  I want them to remember who helped them adjust in college whether its school or football."
  • The star of the young group is Su'a Cravens, and he has impressed Shaw from day one.  "Su'a is living up to it by all means.  Su'a is a smart kid.  He catches up really fast in the meeting room and he translates it out here."
  • Here is Lane Kiffin on night two as the rain drops start to fall...

Vote for Stevie

USC men's tennis legend Steve Johnson is a semifinalist for the Sullivan Award, given to the nation's top amateur athlete, and who could be more deserving?  During his four-year career at Troy, he won four national team titles, two NCAA singles championships and his final 72 singles matches.

Vote here for Steve Johnson!!!

Johnson is on the professional circuit now which stops in Indian Wells this week for the BNP Paribas Open.  The American earned a wild card into the draw and will play Pablo Andujar in the first round.

Former USC women's tennis All-American Maria Sanchez, who is being coached by 18-time Grand Slam winner Chris Evert, is in the women's singles draw, and she has already bagged a first round straight set victory over Olga Puchkova.  She advanced to face the three-seed Agnieszka Radwankska.

"I felt good. It was a solid first match and I felt like I worked through the nerves pretty well," Sanchez told The Desert Sun. "I just stayed focused and competed well, so I'm happy with that first round."

Sanchez is ranked No. 112 in the world, while Johnson has quickly moved up to No. 134 in his first year on tour.

USC men's swimming continued its domination of the freestyle events to close the 2013 Pac-12 Championships.  Having already won the 50y free, junior Vladimir Morozov repeated as conference champion in the 100y free to go along with a win in the 400y free relay on the event's final night.

Morozov broke his school record and the meet record in the 100y free.  He then joined teammates Cristian Quintero, Dimitri Colupaev and Jack Wagner to post the fastest 400y free relay time in the country this season and lower the USC record by almost two seconds.

The Trojans finished third as a team at Pac-12s, but the seven titles was the most by USC men's swimming at a conference championship since 1977.  The core trio of Morozov, Quintero and Colupaev will all be threats to win NCAA Championships beginning March 28 in Indianapolis.

While she has only played four competitive rounds in her young career at Troy, Ellie Chai is an inspiration for even making it on the top-ranked Trojans. The freshman's golf career has already been threatened by losing her childhood home to Hurricane Katrina and a devastating injury.

Lane Kiffin is trying to change his public perception one win at a time.  The USC head coach took accountability for the mistakes of the 2012 season, but he is looking forward now to the challenge of returning the Trojans to the top.

Click here for Mark Saxon's ESPNLA story on Kiffin.

"It's all about winning," Kiffin told Saxon. "Winning makes people forget a lot of things."

The USC head coach won 10 games in 2011, and was named the Southern California Coach of the Year at the LA Sports Awards.  The Trojans succumbed to expectations and hype in 2012, and Kiffin expressed regret about "the mindset of training camp."

However, he feels that he has learned from his mistakes going into 2013.  To that end, the mantra of spring camp is painted on the practice field, "Don't talk about, be about it!"

2013 Spring Practice #1: Notes

Spring football is officially underway...
  • Along with a couple dozen hearty fans braving the cold weather on Dedeaux Deck, there was a star-studded crowd on the sideline including Lions All-Pro DT Ndamukong Suh, Vikings Pro Bowl LT Matt Kalil, FB Rhett Ellison and NFL Draft prospect Khaled Holmes.  Suh spoke to the team after practice about cherishing their time in college and staying all four years of eligibility.
  • Spring-Motto-Thiry.jpgLane Kiffin has opened up his injury policy for the spring.  He announced that the following scholarship players are out for all of spring football: Dion Bailey, Scott Starr and Gerald Bowman.  J.R. Tavai, Cody Temple and Greg Townsend are out now, but expected to be back soon.
  • In case you have not heard, DT Christian Heyward and DE DeVante Wilson have transferred out of the school. TE Christian Thomas is no longer on the team due to medical issues, and TE Junior Pomee is not with the program as he deals with pending legal issues.
  • While the quarterback battle will steal headlines before spring has sprung, the new 5-2 defense was the biggest story on day one.  For what it's worth, which is very little, the Trojans' first team featured Leonard Williams, Antwaun Woods and George Uko as the down linemen.  Devon Kennard and Morgan Breslin were the stand-up edge rushers.  Hayes Pullard and Anthony Sarao paired together at middle linebacker.  And, the new look secondary had Kevon Seymour and Anthony Brown at cornerback flanking Josh Shaw and Demetrius Wright at safety.
  • While most of us were watching practice, new defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast was listening.  "We're at the very early stages of our installation, so we really just wanted to listen to the guys communicate out there and get a feel for playing with each other," he said about day one.  "We are a defense that has to be on the same page."
  • Meanwhile, the head coach had his eye on Pendergast.  "I had researched how he coached...but then to see it on the field today was very exciting," said Kiffin.  "He was very demanding, very tough on them and really got after them."
  • Hayes Pullard explained that his responsibilities at the Mike spot are similar to the 4-3, but "the terminology is way different," so he and his teammates are basically learning a new language.
  • The defense plays to the strength of rangy athletes like redshirt freshman Jabari Ruffin who made a leaping interception of Cody Kessler dropping into coverage after starting at the line of scrimmage as an edge rusher.
  • Offensively, the highlights were two deep completions for touchdowns to Nelson Agholor (thrown by Kessler) and Victor Blackwell (thrown by Max Wittek).  Both players are competing to fill Robert Woods' big shoes.
  • Other than the interception, Kessler was the best quarterback of the trio today, according to Kiffin.  The QB room is adjusting to life without Matt Barkley.  "That's a little bit weird," said Wittek.  "We've got a good dynamic going already with Max Browne."
  • Browne went through some opening day "jitters," including getting used to life under center.  "I was mostly gun [in high school]," he said.  "That's something I've got to get used to quickly."
  • Kiffin set no timetable on naming a starting quarterback.  Wittek projects the confidence of a starter, but knows he is in for a fight.  "This is USC.  This place is built on competition.  We're all going to take that competition to the field."
  • Max Tuerk has moved from tackle to center, which led to a few fumbled exchanges today.  "It was his first real day at center, so he definitely has some kinks to work out, but he's such a great lineman that he'll get it down," said Wittek about Tuerk.  "He's so smart.  That's why we put him in there."
  • The spring football mantra is pictured above.  Here is Lane Kiffin's long opening day press conference in its entirety:

Harberts Named All-Pac-12

"I want every young adult affected by a terminal diagnosis to be able to do what he or she wants," Coffelt wrote on his blog. "This is what makes me happy, and my network of friends has shown me how important it is to help someone in a time of need. ... I am now devoting my time, energy and effort all to this foundation."

Brothers in the Bullpen

Written by Sarah Bergstrom, USC Blog Contributor

Bob and Brent Wheatley have played baseball together for as long as they can remember. Now they're both starting pitchers at USC taking the idea of the Trojan Family quite literally.
Wheatleys.jpg
At first glance the Wheatley brothers have a lot in common. They have both played baseball all their lives, both chose to attend USC, and both now are starting pitchers for the Trojans (Bob on Fridays and Brent on Tuesdays). They were both voted Trinity League Pitcher of the Year during their high school careers at Orange Lutheran (Bob in 2010, Brent in 2012), both received All-Trinity League honors, and both played quarterback at their alma mater.

But there's more than meets the eye with these siblings. Brent is a righty, while Bob throws left. Also, their personalities are different. According to Brent, the duo always has been.

"Bob is 'All Business Bob'. He's all business all the time. He knows when to be relaxed and have a good time too, but he's always looking to get himself better."

Brent, on the other hand, is the funny guy of the pair.

"Brent is hilarious, you can ask anybody on the team. He's one of the funniest guys on the planet in my opinion. He's always had a really big imagination and he has a really interesting sense of humor," says Bob.

Take this story for example. Brent was four, Bob was six, and the two were out on the golf course. Bob, being a helpful big brother, bends down to help set the golf ball on the tee. "Alright Brent, I'm going to put it down. Don't swing until I get out of the way," Bob instructs.

USC Olympians Show Their Mettle

On day two of the Pac-12 Championships, USC men's swimming won three of four races led by London 2012 Olympians Vladimir Morozov and Cristian Quintero.  The Trojans lack of overall depth has them in third place in the meet despite the dominance at the top of the podium.

Click here for the full story.

Morozov (pictured) doubled down on conference titles leading the 200y free relay and defending his 50y sprint crown.  Quintero, who keyed the Trojans' 800y free relay winners on Sunday, added his first career individual title by winning the 500y free.

"Tonight was a strong performance by the Trojans," USC Coach Dave Salo said. "Three of four titles by the Trojans in the first full night was a momentum builder for the guys. Vlad has been on a mission since the Olympic Games and it includes an NCAA championship title. Vlad's got his teammates firing on all cylinders in the 200 free relay and it is nice to win both the 800 and 200 free relay in this meet.

"
Cristian wanted to leave no doubt that he is the best 500 freestyler in the Pac-12. He went out fast took a commanding lead and didn't look back until he touched the wall, climbed out and sealed the win. Cristian's swim to start the session was a great inspiration. Don't know the last time we had a start like this, but it was a lot of fun!"

2013 Spring Football Prospectus

Spring football is here!  The Trojans will hold the first of 15 practices Tuesday evening starting at 4 p.m., and you are invited to view the workout from Dedeaux Deck and Prior Plaza at Dedeaux Field.

WE PLAY NEXT-FB.jpgClick here for more information about the public viewing of practices.

The Trojans officially return 16 starters in 2013 plus seven exciting early entrants to add to the spring mix before six more arrivals in the fall.  The roster will also be boosted by the return of DE/OLB Devon Kennard and RB Tre Madden who both missed the entire season with injuries.

For the numerical enthusiasts, the neophytes have their first numbers: QB Max Browne (No. 4), DB Su'a Cravens (No. 21), DL Kenny Bigelow (No. 95), DB Leon McQuay III (No. 22), RB Justin Davis (No. 22), DB Chris Hawkins (No. 29) and WR Darreus Rogers (No. 84).

QB Max Browne has a chance to create his own legacy since the No. 4 has never been worn by a Trojan All-American.  The last USC starting quarterback to wear No. 4 was John Fox in 1999.

Su'a Cravens, the USA Today National Defensive Player of the Year, will grab the torch from Nickell Robey who wore No. 21 proudly.  The number has never been worn by a Trojan All-American, but LenDale White did rush for a school record 52 touchdowns.

As always, we will provide daily practice reports plus freshman spotlights and the return of the "Project Trojan" documentary series.  Stay locked in to the RipsIt Blog for blanket coverage of USC Spring Football 2013.

Brewing Seattle's Best

USC women's basketball may have found its form at just the right time as the Women of Troy bound into the Pac-12 Tournament in Seattle on the back of two road wins in the desert.  Thanks to sweeping the Arizona schools, USC moved up to No. 7 in the final regular season conference standings and will play Oregon State in the first round on Thursday, March 7 at Noon on Pac-12 Networks.

Click here for the tournament website.

Finally healthy, Christina Marinacci keyed the recent success for the Women of Troy.  She posted a career-high 18 rebounds to go along with 16 points in the win over Arizona, and then followed up with a team-high 13 points to beat ASU.

When she's not dominating on the court, Marinacci hosts the team's YouTube post-game show.  Ariya Crook was the latest in "Chris's Corner."

Haley Double

No. 1 USC women's swimming and diving tallied a record points total for the program at Pac-12 Championships, but the Women of Troy fell just short of the conference title losing out to Stanford by the narrowest margin of victory in conference history.

Click here for the meet recap.

On the final day, Haley Anderson added another notch to her historic career by winning the 1650y free for the fourth time in four years, which makes her the first woman to do so.  She finishes her Pac-12 career as a seven-time conference champion.

The other big winner on the day has a familiar last name as Haley Ishimatsu continued her family legacy of dominant diving by winning the platform.  Her sister Victoria Ishimatsu won seven conference crowns at Troy but never the platform.

Haley Ishimatsu was named the Women's Diver of the Meet.

Emotional Fontan

_PEC9292.jpgBefitting his up-and-down career at USC, Jio Fontan's Senior Day was an adventure.  He was beset by foul trouble and a wrist injury which limited his action to 22 minutes.  He committed a flagrant foul and ended up fouling out.  Despite the pain in his wrist, which needs an MRI, he persevered and captained his team to a victory.  "It just represented all the struggles and all the highs that I went through and growing up as a man here," Fontan said about Senior Day.  "At the end of today, I just wanted to be able to smile and walk with a win."  He certainly was smiling as he took a victory lap around Galen Center and then choked up in the press conference.  Similarly to Matt Barkley, Fontan's greatest legacy will be leading the program out of dark times and always representing with toughness and class.

A Chance for Chass

With Fontan relegated to the bench for long stretches, Chass Bryan was pressed into 18 minutes of duty, his longest stint on the court in the Bob Cantu era.  "He did what we needed him to do," said the interim head coach about his freshman walk-on point guard.  "He facilitated the ball.  I thought he was poised."  Fontan seconded Cantu's assessment saying Bryan is "playing beyond his years."  He did not have a single turnover and made a big bucket in the final minutes.

Defending the Three

When the Trojans and Sun Devils met previously in Tempe, ASU won a shootout putting up 98 points and making nine threes.  Cantu and his staff devised a strategy to change the outcome.  "The emphasis all week was to defend the three-point line," Cantu said.  "The guys really followed the game plan."  After Jahii Carson's potential game-winning three at the buzzer went begging, the Sun Devils finished the afternoon 1/12 from behind the arc.

And 1...

Sugiyama Starts

On a team of mostly transfers, the longest tenured Trojan, walk-on Tyler Sugiyama, was rewarded with a chance to start on Senior Day.  Cantu tipped the game with five seniors on the floor in Sugiyama, Fontan, Eric Wise, Aaron Fuller and James Blasczyk.

Heading into the final day of the Pac-12 Championships, No. 1 USC women's swimming just needs a finishing kick to complete its comeback over Stanford, which has led after all three days, and win the first Pac-12 title in program history.  The Women of Troy made a big move Friday thanks to wins by freshman Kendyl Stewart in the 100y fly and junior Kasey Carlson in the 100y breast.

Stewart is just the second Trojan ever to win the Pac-12 title in the 100y fly and set the school record in the process.  Meanwhile, the veteran Carlson earned her first career conference crown.

The Women of Troy are just eight points behind the Cardinal.

Celebrate the Seniors

USC men's basketball will pay tribute to a six-pack of seniors before the home finale against Arizona State on Saturday (tip time at Noon).  Led by captain Jio Fontan, the scholarship group is made up entirely of transfers, but they quickly assimilated into the Trojan Family.

Flores Joins Staff

Luckily at USC World Series winners just hang around the John McKay Center, so when Dan Hubbs needed to fill an assistant coach position on his staff, he could easily task Randy Flores with helping his young pitching staff.  Today, Flores has officially joined the USC baseball coaching staff bringing along expertise gained from an eight-year major league career and four years starring at Troy.

Click here for the complete story.

"We are really excited about Randy Flores joining the coaching staff," said head coach Dan Hubbs. "He brings a wealth of baseball experience. We are also excited about the energy and enthusiasm that he exudes and brings to the ballpark every day. After working recently as a broadcaster for the team, Randy has a familiarity with the players and they are familiar with him. We really just feel that he is a good fit and we are thrilled to be bringing back another great Trojan."

Unbroken

One last home game remains for the USC men's basketball team. Fresh off a thrilling upset over No. 11 Arizona, the Trojans are looking to finish the home schedule strong with a victory over Arizona State this Saturday (12 p.m. tip). Not only will it be the last home game for the 2012-13 season, it also marks senior guard Jio Fontan's final chance to play in front of the Galen faithful.

Fontan-UCLA2-McG.jpgThe road to his successful career has not been easy. Fontan has been faced with great adversity during his stint as a Trojan.

Fontan transferred to USC from Fordham University in January 2010. A self-proclaimed homebody as well as a New Jersey native, he was reluctant to venture to the West Coast. "Once I decided to leave Fordham, they put a couple bans on [the waiver] so I was not able to go to certain schools on the East Coast," Fontan said. "USC reached out originally and I didn't know if I would consider it because it was all the way in California. My dad suggested that I take the visit. Once I came out here, I loved it. I met Kevin O'Neill and felt comfortable with him."

Due to transfer rules, Fontan was forced to sit out the first semester of the season. He made his USC debut on Dec. 18 at the Allen Fieldhouse against the Kansas Jawhawks on national television.

"My team had already played some games together so they already had their identity and I was just thrown into the mix to adjust things," Fontan said. "My biggest goal was not to throw my teammates off. I wanted to make sure everyone was still comfortable in their role and that I could add to that."

Fontan adjusted quickly and scored 15 points in his inaugural game as a Trojan which was also his average while at Fordham. His performance against the Jayhawks reassured him that his game was still up to par. "The first game was tough but I came out, did okay and scored 15 points which wasn't too far off from my average," Fontan said. "It made me feel like I didn't take a step back at all. It was a great start for my career as a Trojan and I think it led to a great finish going to the tournament."

USC lost to VCU in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament and the Trojans were eager to attack the 2011-12 season and return to the "Big Dance." However, Fontan tore his ACL in an exhibition game in Brazil in August 2011. The injury sidelined him for the entire season. USC went 6-26 in Fontan's absence.

The Olympic silver medalist led wire-to-wire posting a 4:38.79, but she only won the race by a mere .14 seconds.  Stanford leads the way at the midway point as the Trojans push for the program's first ever Pac-12 crown.
