Official: Pendergast Named DC

Lane Kiffin is looking to make immediate and significant strides on defense next season, so the head coach hired Clancy Pendergast, who took Cal's defense from seventh to first in the Pac-12 in one season, as his new defensive coordinator.  During his three years in Berkeley, Pendergast's defense was tops in the conference twice (2010 and 2011).

"Clancy is a perfect fit for us," said Kiffin.  "He is a very experienced and successful defensive coordinator.  He plays an attacking-style defense with multiple looks and, having spent the last three years in the Pac-12, he knows how to defend the various kinds of offenses that we see in this conference."

Pendergast can also appeal to players with NFL aspirations.  He was Arizona's defensive coordinator when the Cardinals made the first Super Bowl in franchise history, and he helped send nine Bears to the NFL during his time at Cal.

In his history, Pendergast has played with a base 3-4 and 4-3 formation, but he has always been known as an aggressive defensive play-caller.  He does have ties to USC as a defensive assistant in 1992.
