WE PLAY 2012: Bryshon Nellum

As we countdown to 2013, we're going to reveal the top five WE PLAY moments of the year.

No. 3 - Nellum Lives the Dream

Bryshon Nellum attended USC to become a track star not a film star.  But by now, he has likely been approached by more than one student at the famed USC School of Cinematic Arts to put his story on the silver screen.

At this point, you have heard the tale told from every angle, but courage and perseverance never get old.  Despite bullet wounds in his prized legs, the sprinter never broke stride on his road to glory.

After years of grueling rehabilitation, he showed up at the U.S. Olympic Trials as a heavy underdog.  When he caught his Trojan teammate Josh Mance down the final stretch of the 400m final, we thought we had seen it all, but he was just beginning.

Nellum missed out on the 400m Olympic final by an eyelash, but he bounced back again to lead an undermanned American squad to silver in the 4x400m relay.  And for his efforts, he earned the ultimate reward as the bearer of the United States flag in the closing ceremonies.

Is he satisfied?  Hardly.  While the dream was realized, Nellum dares to dream again with golden thoughts looming in the distance.
