USC redshirt freshman QB Cody Kessler bonded recently with Nathan Garcia, a 12-year-old boy from his native Bakersfield who is stricken with terminal brain cancer. As Jill Painter portrays in her story, the relationship is as powerful for the idol as it is the patient.

As of yesterday, Garcia is still holding strong despite the doctor's prognosis that he is nearing his final breaths. Kessler's teammates and coaches have also bombarded the football fan with calls of support and publicity for Garcia's toy drive for sick kids.
