With the departure of Monte Kiffin after the bowl game, Ed Orgeron has been promoted to assistant head coach while maintaining his roles as recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach. Meanwhile, the search continues for a new defensive coordinator.
"Ed and myself are on the exact same page here," Kiffin told the LA Times. "Our No. 1 goal is to bring USC back to a championship level on defense. In order to do that we need to bring in someone from the outside."

Orgeron and Kiffin know the Trojans need to improve schematically against spread offenses. "We both agreed that we need to research and develop the best defensive coordinator in the country to come in and help the Trojans," Orgeron told the LA Times. "We realize there are some things we need to get better at with the scheme, especially against the spread offense.

"One of the reasons I came back to 'SC is that Lane involves me in most of the decision-making process with the football team. In that role, I'm very comfortable at USC."
