Water Polo Primer

Are you late to the USC men's water polo scene?  Do you still want to be a part of Trojan history as the program strives for five consecutive national championships this weekend?

Here's what you need to know...
  • MPSF-2012-Celebration-DA.JPGIn 2011, USC defeated UCLA to complete the first water polo 4-peat in NCAA history.  The same two teams will likely match-up this Sunday at 3 p.m. PT at the McDonald's Swim Stadium with another national crown on the line.
  • The Trojans are a perfect 27-0 this season.  USC is trying to finish a complete season undefeated for only the second time ever (2008).
  • Jovan Vavic is the Phil Jackson of collegiate water polo.  He has won seven national championships with the USC men's team and three more as the coach of the women's program.  He is a 10-time national coach of the year, and recently was appointed the interim head coach for the U.S. Men's National Team.
  • Nikola Vavic, the head coach's son, leads the team with 79 goals this season, which is the highest total for a Trojan since 1988.  He needs just three goals to become the all-time high scorer for a single season.
  • Joel Dennerley was the rock of the program in goal the last four years.  However, the Australian has passed the torch to freshman James Clark, his Olympic teammate.  Clark was recently named the MPSF's top goalie.
  • Water polo plays through the rain.  In fact, the rain has been good luck for the Trojans, who have won the last two NCAA titles amid downpours.  While the forecast may call for wet weather Sunday, the show will most definitely go on!

Monte Kiffin to Resign

USC assistant coach Monte Kiffin has announced that he will resign his post to pursue opportunities in the NFL effective after the bowl game.

Click here for the full story.

"I wanted to make this announcement now so that our players who are preparing for the bowl game and our recruits who will be visiting campus are aware," said Monte Kiffin.  "I really enjoyed my time at USC and the opportunity I had to work with our players and coaches.  The chance to work for my son, Lane, was unique and memorable, but we always treated each other professionally on a coach-to-coach basis.

"Although things didn't always go as well as we would have liked this year from a defensive and win-loss standpoint, I will leave USC with the utmost respect for the University, the Trojan Family and, most importantly, the players I had the good fortune to coach.  I see great things ahead for the USC football program."

Winter Signing Period

In the last two weeks, several USC programs stocked up on 2013-14 recruits by announcing the signings of the newest Trojans.  Among the highlights, men's basketball inked a five-player class, including four-star talents Roschon Prince and Kendal Harris.

Harris is the likely replacement for senior point guard Jio Fontan, while Prince is a big time local talent from Long Beach Poly HS.  The guard-heavy class also includes 5'11" scorer Kahlil Dukes and Las Vegas PG Julian Jacobs to go along with the one big man Nikola Jovanovic (6'10" from Serbia).

"I'm really happy with our recruiting class," said head coach Kevin O'Neill. "I feel really good about all of the guys and I'm looking forward to them joining the Trojan Family."

WE PLAY IN SPACE

The best part about our WE PLAY marketing campaign this year has been watching the fans make it their own.  From the caption contest to Twitter jpegs to custom t-shirts, the Trojan Family has had fun with our all-sports slogan.

The USC Rocket Propulsion Lab has taken it to a new level, literally and figuratively, with their spin on WE PLAY, WE LAY-UP TO FLIGHT ON.

For the aerospace layman, laying up is the process of compositing carbon fiber around a mandrel to form an airframe.  After looking up several of those words, basically, these students are building rockets from scratch with the hope of launching one into space.

The lab's most recent rocket was appropriately named "Traveler."

WVB Bracket Breakdown

USC women's volleyball will be heavily favored to advance out of the first and second round NCAA pairings at Galen Center this Thursday and Friday.  So, let's see what potential pitfalls lie ahead for the No. 6 overall seed...

Click here for the entire 64-team bracket.

The top seed in the Women of Troy's region is No. 3 Texas.  The Longhorns went 23-3 this season, including wins over the bracket's other seeded teams, No. 11 Kansas and No. 14 Florida.

If the Trojans reach their third consecutive Final Four, a familiar foe likely awaits with heavy hitters No. 2 Stanford and No. 7 UCLA on the same side as USC.  The NCAA Final Four is in Louisville, KY, this year.

But, first things first, USC must overcome Fairfield and the winner of St. Mary's (CA)/San Diego St. at Galen Center.  To attend those matches, click here for tickets or you can watch them live online through our Pac-12 portal.

Pac-12 Awards Hagglund and Bricio

For the second consecutive season, Natalie Hagglund was named the Pac-12 Libero of the Year.  The All-American leads a list of Trojans collecting postseason awards, including Samantha Bricio who earned the conference's Freshman of the Year honors.

Hagglund, who recorded a Pac-12 high 44 digs in a win over No. 1 Stanford this season, leads the conference with 5.09 digs per set.  She has won the conference's Libero of the Year Award in the only two years of its existence.

Despite her youth, Bricio carried the Women of Troy offensively this year averaging 4.05 kills per set (5th in the conference), while also leading the Pac-12 in aces per set (0.34).  She is the fifth Trojan ever to be named the conference Freshman of the Year and the second in the last three seasons.

Hagglund and Bricio both made first team All-Pac-12, while Katie Fuller, Alexis Olgard and Sara Shaw were honorable mention.

Lee Named Pac-12 Offensive MVP

Marqise Lee's historic season has led to some individual hardware as the sophomore receiver was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year today.  Lee rewrote the conference record books with more catches (112) and receiving yards (1,680) in a single season than any player in Pac-12 history.

Lee-CU-SH.jpgHe is the 11th Trojan to win the conference's Offensive Player of the Year Award, and the first since Reggie Bush in 2005.  Lee was the only unanimous selection on the All-Pac-12 First Team.

In all, 19 Trojans earned conference recognition.  Click here for the complete list.

Senior center Khaled Holmes was the only other USC player on the All-Pac-12 First Team.  He is one of just two student-athletes to be named to the conference's first team for football and academics.

DT Leonard Williams was named the Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year.  A Trojan has earned league freshman MVP honors in all three of Lane Kiffin's years in charge.

Of the 19 Trojans receiving accolades, only six are seniors.  USC placed five players on the Pac-12 second team: WR Robert Woods, DE Morgan Breslin, DB T.J. McDonald, DB Nickell Robey and KR Marqise Lee.

Pac-12 honorable mention: LB Dion Bailey, QB Matt Barkley, LB Tony Burnett, TE Xavier Grimble, PK Andre Heidari, DE Wes Horton, OG John Martinez, P Kyle Negrete, LB Hayes Pullard, RB Silas Redd, OL Max Tuerk, DT George Uko and DT Leonard Williams.

Huge week for Trojans in the league...

Heisman Worthy

Jordan Cameron, TE, Browns - First NFL touchdown reception

The Trojans fall to 3-3 on the season and will travel to Nebraska next week.

Offensive Stride

Despite trailing the Aztecs by as much as 19 points in the first half, the Trojans bounced back significantly to close the gap. "I liked what we did offensively," said head coach Kevin O'Neill. "We only had eight turnovers again and we out rebounded them. I liked their shots but they need to keep being aggressive and keep shooting." _PEC3969 Pierson Clair.jpeg

Fighting Back

O'Neill was impressed that the Trojans were able to fight back after shooting 25.8% in the first half. However, because USC dug a hole so quickly, they had to expend more energy in order to play catch-up with the Aztecs. "We fought back here twice and got the lead," O'Neill said. "I like our fight but we have to be a team that is doing our job from the very beginning of the game instead of waiting for whatever to happen before we dig in."

Playmaker

Senior forward Eric Wise, who was was suffering from an ankle injury, continues to be an asset for the Trojans. Tonight, he scored 14 points and had seven rebounds. "He is a heck of a player. He does it all: scores, rebounds, assists and he is a smart player," O'Neill said. "He has a chance to have a really good senior season. He is probably our number two playmaker behind Jio and that is why he is so valuable to us."

Wittek-Danny-Moloshok-AP.jpgBuilding Block

In his first start, Max Wittek completed 14 of 23 passes for 186 yards and 1 TD with 2 INTs.  More than the stats, he was composed throughout and fired the ball around the field.  "I thought Max did really well for the situation," said Lane Kiffin about his redshirt freshman QB.  "That's really Max's personality...throwing the ball down field, aggressively going after it.  That's really who he is.  I don't think he played nervous."

Missing Matt

The Trojans undoubtedly missed Matt Barkley, who sat out his Senior Day with a shoulder injury.  Lane Kiffin became emotional in the pregame ceremony and then again in the post-game press conference thinking about his captain.  "It's just wrong," Kiffin said.  "That shouldn't happen to that kid for it to end like that.  My heart just felt for him."  Barkley supported his fellow Mater Dei alum.  "He said, 'You played your heart out.'  He said he was proud of me," said Wittek.

Stuck on the Field

Notre Dame converted only 5/14 on third down, but the Fighting Irish were 4/8 in the first half.  They set a plodding tempo from the start of the game by extending drives, which led to a huge disparity in total plays (69 to 51) and time of possession (34:38 to 25:22).  "We couldn't get off the field on third downs in the first half," said Kiffin plainly.  As a play-caller, Kiffin admitted that it was hard to get anything going consistently with so few plays.  The Trojans only converted on one third down in eight tries.

Goal Line Wall

On back-to-back drives in the fourth quarter, USC had 1st-and-goal inside the Notre Dame five-yard line only to be kept out of the end zone.  The Trojans' hopes were finally dashed on the second goal line stand which ended in a drop by FB Soma Vainuku on 4th down.  "We were not able to finish a couple of drives that were very telling," said Kiffin.  "The difference of 11 points right there, only getting three instead of 14.  You've got to make the plays in those situations."  The Fighting Irish just added to their reputation for goal line stinginess.  "That's kind of the theme of their season, great defense like that...goal line stands," said Wittek.  "They came to play down there."

Barkley-Harry-How-Getty.jpgOut of the Woods

While Marqise Lee broke Robert Woods Pac-12 record for receptions in a season, the junior actually overshadowed the sophomore tonight with seven catches for 92 yards and a TD.  Woods synced up nicely with Wittek, who depended on the route-running specialist.  "He's so smart," said Wittek.  "He knows defenses.  It's easy to be on the same page with a guy like that."

A Season to Forget

USC started the season as the preseason No. 1, and proceeded to drop precipitously to 7-5 on the year, which has drawn the ire of the Trojan Family.  "I'm disappointed too," said Kiffin.  "I hear them.  I feel them.  We've got to do better and that starts with me."  Hayes Pullard knows that the next generation must now lead the program.  "We got to soak it in," said the linebacker.  "We feel bad for the seniors.  They came up to me after the game and told me they loved me.  They want us to carry on this legacy."

Extra Point...

Bowl Business

Jerry Palm of CBSSports.com has the Trojans projected to play Boise State in the Las Vegas Bowl, but nothing has been decided.  USC could end up in the Holiday Bowl, Sun Bowl or Vegas Bowl.  Before any bowl game though, Marqise Lee will head to Orlando hoping to become the first Biletnikoff Award winner in Trojan history.

The Magnificent Seven

Maybe the headline should be "The Seven Survivors"...  For the senior class of 2012, the four or five years at Troy were not exactly drenched in glory.

Khaled Holmes, Wes Horton, Drew McAllister and Curtis McNeal know what it's like to win a Rose Bowl, but the celebratory view was mostly from the sideline as all but McAllister redshirted the 2008 season.  Matt Barkley, T.J. McDonald and Jawanza Starling joined the following year as the Trojans rebuilt through an 8-5 campaign with an Emerald Bowl victory.

McNeal-ASU1-McG.jpgBarkley has become the poster boy for the group and rightfully so.  Where would USC football be if the quarterback had decided not to stick out the sanctions?  Instead, exodus gave way to genesis.

The Trojans have been reborn starting with the core seven.  While the nation buried USC into a hole with no light in sight, they grabbed shovels and went to work.

So perhaps, McNeal is the real symbol of this senior class as Lane Kiffin suggested this week.  He was dealt a bad hand off the field before even coming to USC and then persevered through academic and attitude issues before finally emerging as a 1,000-yard rusher last season.

"When we got here, not a lot of people thought he was going to make it this far, so he's one of those stories," said the head coach, who considers himself the "step-father" to this group since he inherited them from Pete Carroll.

The stories abound through the group though.

Barkley is the first three-time USC football captain and set new Pac-12 records for touchdown passes in a season and career.  Yet, he may be best remembered for his selflessness, which created a spirit of giving on this team, including a life-changing humanitarian trip to Haiti for he and his teammates.

Holmes is a true scholar.  He was named to the Pac-12's All-Academic first team and will finish USC with a Master's degree.

McDonald represents Trojan pride.  He came into Troy with an All-American legacy thanks to his father Tim, and now he has carried on the family tradition with his own All-American honors.

Starling, Horton and McAllister all had their own signature moments and legacy as did the other seniors who will run through the Heritage Tunnel before the Notre Dame game Saturday.

But, the symbol is still the collective seven, a number that kept coming back this season.  A number that stands for Barkley and McDonald, but also pride, perseverance and the Fight On spirit.

2012 Game 12: USC vs. Notre Dame

No. 1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (11-0) at USC (7-4)

Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum at 5 p.m. PT on ABC

Irish to Watch: Senior LB Manti Te'o

Teo-Manti.jpgHe has the Trojans attention.  Te'o's name came up in nearly every interview and press conference this week and for good reason.  The middle linebacker is in the Heisman mix thanks to 98 tackles and six interceptions (second in the nation).  More importantly, the Irish are one win away from the BCS Championship Game because Te'o is an indomitable leader who feeds energy and power into a defense that has only given up nine touchdowns this season.  If he can carve out a signature moment Saturday, he can put one hand on both the Heisman and the crystal football.

Click here for more on the Fighting Irish.

3 Keys

To the Max

Max Wittek can make all the throws and then some.  The redshirt freshman spins the football like an NFL veteran, but decision-making and accuracy not arm strength will determine how successful he is in his debut.  The Trojans are unlikely to control the game on the ground against the nation's fifth ranked rush defense (92 yards allowed per game), so the pressure will be on the QB.  Marqise Lee and Robert Woods have been focused all week on building Wittek's confidence by making every conceivable catch, and they must take that mindset into the game.  Notre Dame's one presumed weakness is in the secondary, which plays into the Trojans strength if Wittek can deliver on time and on target.

Traditional Rival

USC's defense has fallen on hard times in the last month as opponent after opponent has spread the Trojans out.  In some ways, the Fighting Irish can similarly exploit USC with mobile QB Everett Golson, big TE Tyler Eifert and empty formations with five receiving targets.  However, Golson is not particularly accurate (59% completions) and T.J. Jones is the only real threat at wide receiver (enter Nickell Robey).  Lane Kiffin made no secret this week that the USC defense is better built to handle Notre Dame's offense than Oregon, Arizona or UCLA.  To that end, the Fighting Irish only scored one offensive TD against the Trojans in South Bend last season.

WE PLAY

Football is an emotional game.  And on paper, Notre Dame has so much more to play for than USC.  On the flip side, the Fighting Irish come in to the Coliseum bearing all the pressure, while the underdog Trojans have no reason not to play free and easy.  Either way, the mental aspect of this game will be just as important as the physical.  How much does it mean to USC to spoil Notre Dame's season?  Will the Trojans rally around their seniors in their final home game?  USC is more than equipped to win this game if the Trojans rise to the fight.

USC's 31-17 win in South Bend last season was the first signature win of the Kiffin era.

Trojan Heavyweight

gerald_washington.jpgWhile USC and Notre Dame are squared off in a heavyweight tilt on Saturday night in the Coliseum, former Trojan defensive end Gerald Washington will put his undefeated record on the line against Jamiah Williamson as part of the undercard for Guerrero/Berto in Ontario, CA.

Washington is a perfect 4-0 as a heavyweight boxer since switching athletic career paths from the gridiron to the ring.  At 6'6" and 245-pounds, he has slightly trimmed down from his football days, but Washington's strengths as a fighter are speed and athleticism.

His nickname is "El Gallo Negro" or "The Black Rooster."  His undercard against Williamson will not be televised Saturday.

Before attending USC, Washington served four years in the Navy as a helicopter mechanic.  After Troy, he made the practice squads for both the Washington Redskins and the Buffalo Bills.

  • However, Cody Kessler is not expected to get any series under center on Saturday.  "I just don't believe in [rotations]," said Kiffin.  "Whoever you go with, you've got to go with.  You've got to put confidence in him and not rattle him with rotations."
  • Senior captain T.J. McDonald was carried off the practice field by his teammates to honor his final regular season practice as a Trojan, Pedro Moura first reported.
  • Here is the rest from Kiffin including a Thanksgiving message...

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to the Trojan Family!

In the spirit of the holiday, it is important to remember where the year started.  While the Trojans may not have won as many games as they hoped, they are extremely thankful for this season together, which began with a trip to Haiti.

Here is a look back at that humanitarian venture and how it changed this group of Trojans...

USC vs. Notre Dame - 2002

USC and Notre Dame not only play for national championships, but both schools have a storied Heisman history.  On Saturday, Marqise Lee and Manti Te'o will make their final cases to the voters just like Carson Palmer did in 2002.

The senior quarterback passed for 425 yards and 4 touchdowns against No. 7 Notre Dame that year in the Coliseum.  The Trojans trailed 13-10 before running off 34 unanswered points to dominate the Fighting Irish and secure USC's fifth Heisman Trophy.

Here was the turning point...

State of Troy: Thanksgiving

In celebration of 100 years of CIF high school football in Southern California, Fox Sports West is saluting some of the best athletes to play in the area including Pat Haden.

Before Haden added Rhodes Scholar, two-time USC national championship winner, Los Angeles Rams Super Bowl QB, businessman, broadcaster and athletic director to his resume, he was the Bishop Amat quarterback playing in the Coliseum for a CIF crown.  At Amat, Haden also befriended J.K. McKay, who remains his best friend to this day.

Here's a great feature on Haden's high school football experience which included living with legendary USC head coach John McKay...

USC vs. Notre Dame - 1978

When USC and Notre Dame get together, the national championship is often on the line for at least one of the two programs.  This Saturday, the Fighting Irish are one win away from securing a BCS Championship bid, but the Trojans can spoil their rival's dreams.

In 1978, USC was knocking on the door of a national championship when Notre Dame pushed them to the brink.  The Trojans responded with a game-winning drive engineered by Paul McDonald capped by a Frank Jordan 37-yard field goal in the dying seconds.

Notre Dame Wednesday: Notes

The USC defense is up for the Notre Dame challenge...
  • Lane Kiffin described Max Wittek's practice performance as "awesome" yesterday and "unbelievable" today.
  • T.J. McDonald and the defense believe Wittek can lead them to a victory Saturday.  "We have a lot of confidence in Max.  As long as he plays within himself and does his thing, I think that we'll be OK," said McDonald.  "We've got to give him a lot of support on defense though."
  • we-play-totheend.jpgSince USC's defense has struggled against spread offenses this season, the Trojans expect a better performance against a more traditional Notre Dame attack.  "That's no secret. Over the course of time in our three years here, we've played much better [defensively] against traditional teams," said Kiffin.
  • The Irish still have plenty of playmakers from QB Everett Golson to RB Theo Riddick to TE Tyler Eifert.  "They've got a lot of weapons," said McDonald.  "The quarterback can run.  They are real balanced, a real well-rounded offense."
  • Nickell Robey played the best game of his career last year in South Bend when he shut down NFL first round pick Michael Floyd.  The best Irish receiver in 2012 is T.J. Jones.  "Every time I look at Notre Dame, I see myself making a lot of big plays last year," said Robey.  "This year, I look forward to the same thing.  Even though Michael Floyd is not there, I'm looking to guard T.J. Jones.  Let's see what he's about."
  • Robey expects the Trojans to be loose, but excited Saturday.  He wants his teammates to "just play football to have fun."  Robey relishes any opportunity to run out of the Coliseum tunnel and perform on college football's biggest stage.  "It's going to be pretty pumped Saturday.  I can't wait to have that feeling back again."
  • T.J. McDonald is having a difficult time wrapping his head around running out of the tunnel for the final time as a player.  "It's kinda crazy," he said.  "I think about it sometimes and it just gets tough.  You think about everything that we've been through here.  It's my last time and the Trojan Family has been so good to me and all the rest of the seniors.  It definitely is going to be a great feeling but a bittersweet feeling."
  • Special teams could play a major factor in what is expected to be a close, low-scoring affair Saturday.  To that end, USC needs Andre Heidari to shake off his recent struggles.  "For a kicker to have surgery on his knee part way through your season has to affect you somewhat, I've got to imagine that's playing a part of it," said Kiffin, who still has the utmost confidence in his kicker.
  • UCLA gave Marqise Lee only one chance to return a kickoff, but Notre Dame's Kyle Brindza does not have the same kind of leg.  Kiffin is hoping more returns for Lee will swing field position in the Trojans favor.
  • Here's everything the head coach said on Wednesday...

USC vs. Notre Dame - 1931

How did USC/Notre Dame become the greatest intersectional rivalry in college football?

The origins of the rivalry can be traced back to legendary Notre Dame head coach Knute Rockne recommending his friend Howard Jones for the head coaching position at USC.  Jones would lead the Trojans to their first four national championships, including going through the Irish for the first time in 1928 at the Coliseum.

Once the annual match-up was established, the rivalry was truly born out of great contests between two of the most storied programs in college football.  The 1931 game ranks as one of the most fabled battles as USC overcame Notre Dame 16-14 in South Bend for the first time thanks to a Johnny Baker game-winning field goal.

The Trojans scored all 16 points in the fourth quarter, which put an end to the Fighting Irish's 26-game unbeaten streak and propelled Troy to the national championship.  Upon returning home to Los Angeles, USC's team was greeted by more than 300,000 fans at the train station.

The game was so good that Baker was asked to reenact the ending for this film reel...

Vavic to Coach U.S. Men's National Team

Ten-time national champion Jovan Vavic has been named the interim head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team to push the qualification bid for the 2013 FINA World Championships.  He is now in charge of three different programs with USC men's and women's water polo to go along with Team USA.

Vavic-women-LATimes.jpgClick here for the full story.

"I'm very honored to have been considered for this position, and I'm really looking forward to working hard for both USA Water Polo and USC. I'm used to training more than one team, so it's nothing new to me. It keeps me sharp, because I'm always thinking about water polo," said Vavic.

"USC is my home. It has taken care of me for years, and I'm not leaving USC. I'm excited for the challenge to qualify the United States for the World Championships. It's during a period of time when I have a break, and I'm going to use my break to expand and enhance my coaching horizons by training with some of the best water polo players in our country."

At present, Vavic is focused on No. 1 USC men's water polo's road to a fifth consecutive national championship.  The Trojans completed the regular season undefeated, and now host the MPSF Championships this weekend.

Notre Dame Tuesday: Notes

No shortage of story lines with a forced change at QB and the No. 1 Irish coming to town...
  • "There's not a lot of words to describe it.  I can't feel worse for a family and a kid," said Lane Kiffin about Matt Barkley sitting out his Senior Day.  "We're going to go out and play great for him."
  • "To not be able to suit up and to go with my guys, it's going to suck, but I don't think one game will define my time here at USC," said Barkley, who continues to express no regret about returning for his senior season.  "It's been a tremendous journey."
  • Wittek-ND-Tues-McG.jpgBarkley did not elaborate on his timetable or chances of returning for a bowl game.  He did give the media a moments pause when he discussed his rehab workout this morning, "I was throwing the ball well, spinning it...with my left arm.  We'll see what it's like when I start throwing with my right."
  • Once Barkley realized that he was not going to be able to play, he texted Max Wittek, "'Get ready.  Let's go beat the Irish,'" Wittek recalled.  "Obviously, I take that to heart.  My teammates have expressed a lot of belief in me."
  • While he is embracing the challenge, Wittek is disappointed for Barkley, "With such a great career, with such a great quarterback, with such a great legacy here at USC, it's kind of sad to see that his last home game won't be able to be played by him," the redshirt freshman said.  "Obviously, that's not the ideal situation, but it is what happened.  We're going to deal with that, and we're going to try to win this ballgame."
  • Wittek succeeded Barkley at Mater Dei, and now gets the first crack at doing so at USC.  "He's a tough kid," said Barkley about Wittek.  "It's fun for me to be able to see him progress since high school to where he is now.  I think he's going to have a great performance on Saturday."
  • Wittek was not shy with the media today.  He is ready to run out of the tunnel right now.  "I'm so excited for this opportunity to get out there and play in front of the Coliseum, all our fans, the No. 1 team in the country, you really can't ask for a better opportunity to show what you got."
  • As the backup quarterback, Wittek took about 25% of the practice reps this season, so neither quarterback nor receivers expect timing to be an issue.  "We're going to work on that throughout the week," said Robert Woods.  "Tomorrow, we are going to get some timing down and stay after practice with him."
  • Marqise Lee said that Wittek has so much velocity on his ball that it hurts to catch it.  "You'll feel it on your hands when it hits you," Woods agreed.
  • Kiffin said Woods and Lee "practiced as hard as they ever practiced" today, including making diving catches in routine drills, in an effort to support Wittek.  "We've got to keep his confidence high [and] make some plays when the ball is not perfect," Woods said.
  • Khaled Holmes anticipates no issues with the snap.  While he will miss his best friend Barkley, the center has high expectations for Wittek.  "He's a really confident young man," Holmes said.  "He's got a great skillset.  He's really calm and composed.  I think he's ready for his opportunity."
  • Lane Kiffin called Notre Dame "the best defense in the country."  Wittek concurred, "They are a great defense.  They have playmakers all over the field. But every defense does have their soft spots.  Theirs are obviously limited, [but] we are looking forward to taking advantage of some of those soft spots."
  • In only five words, Woods had the best quote of the day about Wittek, "His story starts this weekend."
  • Here is Lane Kiffin's press conference...

USC vs. Notre Dame - 1974

The Trojan Family may be down this week, but USC always has enough fight to get up for Notre Dame.  With the Fighting Irish coming to town ranked No. 1 and needing one win to earn a BCS Championship berth, the Trojans can go down in rivalry lore by winning with backup QB Max Wittek in his first start.

With that in mind, let's take a look at five games this week that helped shape the greatest intersectional rivalry in collegiate football.  No better place to start than the top...

Trojan Wrap-Up: Water Polo's Weekend

No. 1 USC men's water polo salvaged a rough Saturday by taking out the Bruins 10-9 to finish off a perfect regular season.  The Trojans, who have likely already clinched an NCAA bid, will now host the MPSF Tournament this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at McDonald's Swim Stadium.

While the football team disappointed, women's volleyball surged up to No. 4 behind wins over previous No. 1 Stanford and Cal.  Natalie Hagglund and Samantha Bricio both took home Pac-12 Player of the Week honors.

Some new faces starting to emerge...

Heisman Worthy

Frostee Rucker, DE, Browns - 3 solo tackles, 1 sack (-7 yards) and a forced fumble

Rucker-Sack-Dance.jpgRucker has carved out a solid NFL career for himself now in his sixth season.  He spent the first five in Cincinnati, mostly as a pass rush specialist, before breaking out last year with 44 tackles and four sacks.  In the offseason, he earned a big money deal (5-year, $20.5 million) to switch over to Ohio's other team in Cleveland.  He has rewarded the Browns with three sacks and 29 tackles as he is on pace for career highs in both categories.

Barkley OUT vs. ND

QB Matt Barkley will miss Saturday's regular season finale against Notre Dame with a sprained AC joint in his throwing shoulder, Lane Kiffin announced on his weekly conference call.  Max Wittek will start in the senior's place against the No. 1 Fighting Irish.

Barkley was injured on a crunching hit in the fourth quarter against UCLA, which knocked him out of the game.  Wittek, who succeeded Barkley at Mater Dei High School, has played in six games this season completing eight passes in nine attempts for 95 yards and a touchdown.

Coincidentally, Barkley sat out the 2010 Notre Dame game at the Coliseum with an ankle injury.  On that night, he was relieved by Mitch Mustain in a losing effort.

Wittek was named the backup before the season over Cody Kessler, but Kiffin has stated several times that the two redshirt freshmen will compete for the starting job next spring.  There is no word on whether or not Barkley will be available for the bowl game.

The Morning After: One Last Fight

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

The 2012 season is not over. USC still has one more formidable opponent coming to town on Saturday, No. 1 Notre Dame. The Trojans have a chance to upset their rival and dash the Irish's national championship dreams.

Pops-Player-UCLA-LR-SH.jpgAfter losing the Pac-12 South title to UCLA, it may be difficult for USC to remain focused on the last game of the season. The Trojans currently stand at 7-4 overall and 5-4 in conference.

"We're going to take on Notre Dame. They are our next opponent," said wide receiver Robert Woods. "We're going to take them down and keep them out of the National Championship game."

USC must be able to bounce back quickly in order to prepare for the contest against Notre Dame. The rivalry between both schools is arguably one of the best in college football and will bring out the fight in USC.

"There is a lot to play for," said linebacker Hayes Pullard. "We need to prep as hard as we can because we have number one ranked Notre Dame coming in. It's still a rivalry week and we can't lay down after that loss."

The Trojans will aim to spoil the perfect season of the Fighting Irish and have the luxury of playing at home in the Coliseum. "It is a big game for us," Pullard said. "We try to treat every game as if it were the Super Bowl, just like how everyone treats us as a Super Bowl game."

24-0

Barkley-Gina-Ferazzi-LAT.jpgUSC famously rallied from 24-0 down to defeat Notre Dame in 1974.  Given the exact same deficit, Lane Kiffin thought his Trojans might just pull off the same feat.  Instead, USC was never able to climb the mountain, which leaves the question, why was the hole so deep in the first place?  "A lot of that falls on me," said Kiffin.  "For us to go down like that early, obviously, there was something wrong in how we had our guys ready to play."  As has been a disturbing trend this season, USC began the game with two turnovers in the first three series.  "The number one glaring thing in our losses has been turnovers."

The Quarterbacks

Matt Barkley is one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the Pac-12, but he was outplayed by his young counterpart from UCLA, Brett Hundley.  "You wouldn't think that we'd lose this game with a senior quarterback versus a freshman," Kiffin said.  Barkley left the Rose Bowl with his right arm in a sling after taking a vicious hit, which knocked him out of the contest.  While his senior season has not turned out how he hoped, Barkley has no regrets about coming back.  "There's nothing you can do now, why sit and pout about it?" said Barkley about his decision.  "It isn't how I expected it to turn out, but as of now, you have to be optimistic as to how we can finish this season on a good note."

Defensive Deficiencies

USC's defense was solid on first and second down, but third and longs (and even one 4th and 13) were a nightmare.   Coverage breakdowns were an issue, but so were missed tackles, which tallied up to 17 on the afternoon.  Hundley's poise was the difference.  "We thought he was going to be a little [shaken] up being a rookie playing in the Rose Bowl, rivalry week," said Hayes Pullard.  "We tried to put a little pressure on him, [but] he reacted well.  He executed the plan that they schemed for us."  Johnathan Franklin ran for 171 yards and a 2 TDs, but Pullard said the key was how well the senior back carried out his fakes and took the linebackers out of position.

Kicking Themselves

Pullard-Franklin-Jeff-Gross-Getty.jpgThe kicking game, which has been a strength for USC under Lane Kiffin, was a complete mismatch today.  Andre Heidari missed a field goal and an extra point, and both he and punter Kyle Negrete had kicks blocked.  On the other side, UCLA's Jeff Locke controlled field position with two punts inside the 20, and he nullified Marqise Lee on kick returns.  "I wanted those kickoffs so bad," said Marqise Lee, who only got his hands on one for 27 yards.  "Great kicker.  That dude was kicking it out of the end zone."

A City in the Balance

USC has now won 12 of the last 14 in this series, so the Bruins will have to show some consistency before claiming to "run the town."  However, UCLA's stock is rising with a new head coach Jim Mora Jr. and redshirt freshman QB Brett Hundley, who will be tough to unseat in the coming years.  The Bruins earned the Trojans respect tonight.  "We played against a great UCLA football team that grew up and came out and executed their plan," said LB Hayes Pullard.

Laugh to Keep from Crying

Remember when USC was the preseason No. 1?  Seems like a long time ago.  If someone had told Marqise Lee during the preseason that the Trojans would be saddled with four losses this year, "I would have laughed," he said.  "This is part of life."  The head coach described the latest loss as "crushing."  Without a chance at the Pac-12 or a BCS bowl, the Trojans are relegated to spoiling Notre Dame's perfect season next week.  "Take out Notre Dame," said Robert Woods about what's left to play for.  "I guess we're playing to keep them out of the national championship game."

Extra-point...

Kiffin's Program

Lane Kiffin stated clearly that his job is not in jeopardy this season.  "I don't feel that way at all and that comes from the top.  At the same time, I'm extremely disappointed by this season.  We are too talented to have this many losses.  That falls on me."

No. 18 USC Trojans (7-3, 5-3) at No. 17 UCLA Bruins (8-2, 5-2)

Bruin to Watch: Redshirt freshman QB Brett Hundley

Hundley-Scott-Halleran-Getty.jpgOther than head coach Jim Mora Jr., Hundley represents the biggest reason for optimism and change in Westwood.  The QB ranks third in nearly every passing category in the conference.  The Bruins have not been this solid under center since Drew Olson finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy balloting in 2005, which, not coincidentally, was the last time UCLA came into this match-up nationally ranked.  Hundley can also move his feet, averaging 27 rush yards per game with six TDs on the ground.  The Arizona native will be a fixture in the Crosstown Rivalry for the next few years.

3 Keys

Dock the Jet Ski

Hundley has a lot of talent, but he's still a freshman, who needs to prove that he can produce on this stage.  Johnathan "Jet Ski" Franklin is a known entity.  He went to Dorsey High School in the shadow of the Coliseum, but he has starred in the Rose Bowl.  The senior ranks third in the conference in rushing this season (127 yards per game).  Even more, he became the Bruins all-time leading rusher this year.  He has been effective against USC in his career, averaging 7.68 yards per carry over three games.  The USC defense must stop the run and force Hundley into the air.

One in Thirteen

USC has dominated the rivalry for more than a decade now, but the lone UCLA win came in 2006 thanks to the Bruins pass rush.  UCLA ranks third in the Pac-12 with 38 sacks led by junior LB Anthony Barr, who leads the conference with 10.5.  The Bruins front seven is imposing with Barr (16.5 tackles for loss), DL Datone Jones (13.5 TFLs), LB Damien Holmes (9.5 TFLs) and DL Cassius Marsh (9 TFLs).  The USC offensive line has played its best ball of late, but the tackles must hold up to give Matt Barkley time to take advantage of UCLA's struggling secondary (105th ranked pass defense nationally).

City Champs

For the first time in years, UCLA has real belief.  The Bruins have a better record and ranking than the Trojans.  The city is alive with anticipation.  The Trojans must match the moment.  To that end, Lane Kiffin has avoided all 50-0 talk this week.  New year, new scoreboard.  If USC brings the requisite intensity and concentration, the Trojans have too much talent for the Bruins to close the gap.

In the highest scoring USC-UCLA game in series history, Todd Marinovich hit Johnnie Morton with 16 seconds left to win it for the Trojans.  The game-winning score capped a wild 4th quarter of football at the Rose Bowl, which included six touchdowns and four lead changes.

Marqise Lee suggested that this year's game could be a shootout.  Hopefully, it will match the excitement of 1990.

Strive for Five

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

They say to never follow a legend. However, with the departure of Cutino Award winning goalie Joel Dennerley, USC has asked another Aussie, James Clark, to help lead the Trojans to a fifth consecutive championship.

james clark cal.jpg"It's definitely some big shoes to fill as he's a legacy himself," Clark said about Dennerley. "We are good friends and he taught me a lot about what to expect coming into the program. I'm not trying to follow in his footsteps but rather I am going to try and do my own thing and help the team win a fifth championship."

Clark and Dennerley were both on Australia's Nation Team for the 2012 London Olympic Games where they finished seventh. It was Dennerley that convinced Clark to transfer from the University of Western Sydney to USC.

"Joel and Coach Jovan brought me here," Clark said. "Joel told me great things about USC and I saw how much it helped him develop as a player from where he was when he came here and where he was when he left. I figured it would do the same for me."

Clark had to adapt quickly following the conclusion of the Olympics in order to prepare for the 2012 season. "The standard of the Olympics is the highest it can be and the NCAA level is only a half-step behind it as there is still a good quality of competition," Clark said. "It was hard to adapt but USC has great facilities and there are people here that are willing to help. I try to use that to my advantage."

The top-ranked Trojans currently stand undefeated and will host crosstown rival UCLA on Saturday in the regular season finale.

"I've definitely heard about the rivalry and it's everywhere this week with both the football and water polo programs," Clark said. "They played UCLA in the 2011 Championship and since then there has been some highly contested matches. I am prepared and so is the team. I'm happy it's here at home and it will be a great game."

1976 - Robinson vs. Donahue

The Michigan-Ohio State rivalry at its height pitted Bo Schembechler against Woody Hayes.  While USC has had four legendary head coaches, the Crosstown Rivalry was at its best when John Robinson's Trojans battled Terry Donahue's Bruins.

The two head coaches first squared off in 1976.  No. 3 USC and No. 2 UCLA entered the Rose Bowl for a heavyweight fight in front of 90,519 fans.

In 10 match-ups, Robinson and Donahue, who had great respect for one and other, split the difference with each coach winning five.  Here's how the 1976 Crosstown Showdown played out courtesy of a "A City Divided"...

Faculty Appreciation Dinner

By USC blog contributor Farren Benjamin

On Wednesday night, the Trojan Athletic Senate put on its first annual Faculty Appreciation Dinner in the Galen Center Founders Room.  The event, which was open to all senior student-athletes and members of the Trojan Athletic Senate, provided an opportunity for student-athletes to invite a professor or faculty member of their choice in hopes of strengthening the bonds between student-athletes and their professors.  The evening was filled with great food, presentations from Athletic Director Pat Haden and Sociology professor from the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences Amon Emeka.

Emeka, a former swimmer at California State University of Bakersfield, was able to relate to and understand student-athletes vigorous schedule while in college and also expressed his appreciation for their work ethic and the lessons they learn through athletics.  The dinner provided a great opportunity for student-athletes to mingle with other professors in different departments at USC as well as form stronger relationships with current faculty members across the board.

PROJECT TRO7AN - Episode 5

USC WR Marqise Lee has emerged this season as the best receiver in the country.  The sophomore has always looked up to Robert Woods, his high school teammate, and credits his rise to Woods sacrificing himself.

"He gives up himself for me, basically," Lee said about Woods after Saturday's game.

The tandem continues to break every USC and Pac-12 receiving record by playing a constant game of "Can you top this?"  Learn more about their relationship, competitiveness and approach to the game in the new episode of Project Trojan.

PHED Etiquette Dinner

Written by Ellie Doran, SAAS

Last week, the freshman PHED class wrapped up the fall semester with a business networking and dining skills etiquette dinner. The students gathered at Town and Gown for an evening of instruction on proper etiquette in business settings.

The semester goal of the Freshman Success Seminar is to facilitate a successful academic and personal transition from high school to college of each student.  Other topics that the class features are Financial Literacy, Personal Branding and Values, and Nutrition, on top of introducing new students to campus resources such as USC Libraries, USC Career Center, Center for Women and Men and numerous other campus and athletic department resources.

The class also sheds light on topics such as student and faculty communication, social media, and academic success. We hope that by the end of the semester, students are prepared with the skills necessary for success in a collegiate environment and to empower students to take initiative in their own personal and academic development.

1987 - Peete Over Aikman

Troy Aikman won three Super Bowls, but he never beat the Trojans.  The UCLA legend was matched up against Rodney Peete in 1987 and 1988 with the Rose Bowl on the line, and both times USC prevailed.

The 1988 game was a bit more historic as Peete did not practice all week.  The quarterback was laid up in the hospital with the measles, but he rallied on game day to lead the Trojans to a 31-22 victory.

However, the 1987 game provided one of the most dramatic endings to a Crosstown Rivalry as Erik Affholter juggled home the winning score.  Take a look from the new documentary "A City Divided"...

Exercise Sportsmanship

Here is a joint message from the USC and UCLA athletic departments in anticipation of the annual Crosstown Rivalry game...

With archrivals UCLA and USC set to meet at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, November 17, the athletic directors of both schools have asked their respective fan bases to exercise discretion and sportsmanship while attending the game.

USC-UCLA-2011-SH.jpg"Anytime we have a home game, it is my expectation that our fans and everyone associated with UCLA will put their best foot forward and create a friendly atmosphere for all visitors at the Rose Bowl, including those from the opposing team," said UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero. "While the game will no doubt be played with great enthusiasm on both sides, it is important to remember that UCLA and USC are part of the same Los Angeles community and this rivalry should be celebrated with graciousness and class."

"The USC-UCLA cross-town rivalry brings out the best in both teams," said USC athletic director Pat Haden. "Let's make sure it brings out the best in our fans, too. If you are wearing cardinal and gold on Saturday, please show respect, sportsmanship and class to the fans and players in the blue and gold. Behaving properly will make this game a memorable and enjoyable experience for everyone."

UCLA, the home team for 84th renewal of the greatest cross-town rivalry in college football, enters the game with an 8-2 record (5-2 in the Pac-12 Conference) and ranked 17th in the nation. The visitors from USC boast a 7-3 overall mark, 5-3 in the conference and a number 18 ranking.

Earlier this year, both universities joined with other institutions and venues in adopting the Los Angeles Sports Council's "Southern California Fan Code of Conduct," which, in the case of the Rose Bowl, states:

The UCLA Bruins, the USC Trojans, the Rose Bowl Stadium and the Los Angeles Sports Council support the area's outstanding collegiate and professional sports teams. In order to ensure a safe and celebratory environment, we ask that fans refrain from the following behavior at all events:

Profanity or other offensive language, whether spoken or appearing on apparel
Smoking, other than in designated areas
Intoxication or excessive alcohol consumption
Bringing prohibited items into the venue
Throwing of items or liquids
Entering the playing field or court at any time
Fighting or other threatening behavior
Failure to retain ticket and/or present it to event staff if requested to do so
Resale of tickets at the venue
Violation of state or local laws
Failure to comply may subject you to ejection or arrest.

UCLA police officials and officers representing various public safety departments throughout the area will be closely monitoring spectators throughout the day at the Rose Bowl and will be enforcing the aforementioned code.

Fans are reminded that all parking lots at the Rose Bowl will open six hours prior to game time and that there is no overnight parking, including for recreational vehicles.  Tickets are still available by calling the UCLA Central Ticket Office at 310.UCLA.WIN.

UCLA Wednesday: Notes

Families like the McDonald's are what makes the USC-UCLA rivalry so special...
  • As you probably know, T.J. McDonald is the son of two-time USC All-American Tim McDonald, whose other son Tevin plays for the Bruins.  As a corner last season, the younger McDonald tied the UCLA record with three interceptions against Cal.  This year, he moved to safety like his big brother and father.  He has two games with double-digit tackles.
  • McDonald-Brothers-SH.jpgOn every other Saturday, T.J. is Tevin's biggest fan.  "We're honest with each other about everything we see," the senior safety said.  "We're used to playing with each other before we got to college, [but] it's still family before everything.  I'm proud of the way that he plays."
  • On this particular Saturday, big brother wants to remain in charge.  "There's always going to be that competition, but it's never going to break apart the blood," McDonald said.  "He'll be talking a lot [if UCLA wins].  He's had three years to listen to me."
  • T.J. also knows that this rivalry is bigger than his household.  "It means a lot to not just this team, but all the players that came before you, all the alumni that are watching, people that support USC, it's a huge rivalry. We want to go out and beat UCLA and show them who owns L.A."
  • If the Trojans want to defeat UCLA, they will have to slow down QB Brett Hundley, who has 24 TD passes to only 9 INTs as a redshirt freshman.  He's also a capable runner with 6 TDs on the ground.  "He's put together unbelievable numbers the whole season," Lane Kiffin said.  "You start watching, 'How can that happen with a freshman?'  It's very unusual.  They've done a great job with him.  It's a great system."
  • MLB Lamar Dawson will have to contend with a mobile quarterback in a spread offense for the fourth consecutive week.  Judging by his numbers against ASU (11 tackles and an INT), he is starting to get the hang of it.  "I feel like I had a better game knowing my keys and just running to the football making plays," Dawson said.
  • However, Dawson credits the improvement against the Sun Devils to pride and effort as much as new schemes.  "It was a little of both," he said.  "We took a lot of pride after the last two losses and we really needed to step up."
  • What does a guy from Kentucky know about the Crosstown Rivalry?  "I know it's a big rivalry in L.A.," said Dawson, who grew up on Kentucky-Louisville basketball games dividing his state.  "I'm ready for it and I was a part of it last year."

The Trojans move to 2-0 with a trip to the Maui Invitational up next.

A Little Spark

Dedmon-Coppin1-PC.jpgWhen Maurice Jones was declared ineligible, the backup point guard spot was a gaping hole on an otherwise deep roster, but freshman walk-on Chass Bryan impressed the coaches with his maturity in practice.  Pressed into significant duty tonight, Bryan played the role of floor general like a veteran dishing out four assists to only two turnovers in 15 minutes.  "He's a young player who is going to make some mistakes, but he really did some good things tonight, especially with Jio in foul trouble," said head coach Kevin O'Neill.

Glue Guy

"Eric Wise makes our offense run because he can dribble, pass, shoot at 6-foot-7," said O'Neill.  The Irvine transfer, who was familiar with Long Beach State from his Big West days, ticked all three categories with 10 points, 12 rebounds and 3 assists in a team leading 32 minutes.  Like many of his transfer teammates, Wise is thankful for the second opportunity, which now includes a chance on the big stage at the Maui Invitational.  "I am used to watching it, so I'm happy to be there and playing in it finally.  I never thought I would," Wise said.  The Trojans first game is against Illinois on Monday (ESPN2 at 9 p.m. PT).

Closing Time

For the first time this season, USC looked like a Kevin O'Neill coached team in the second half.  The Trojans held a talented Long Beach team to 21.7% shooting in the period.  "Tonight, we did a really good job in the second half of locking in and shutting those guys down," said O'Neill.  The 49ers turned it over 18 times in the game.  "We put more pressure on the ball and made them take tougher shots than they did in the first half," said Wise.

And 1...

Bench Mob

Again, O'Neill gave important minutes to 12 different players.  The depth on this roster is extraordinary.  "We made our run in the second half with five bench guys in there," said the head coach.

It was decided by Trojan Marching Band Director Dr. Arthur C. Bartner after meeting with UCLA game management that it was in the best interest of both universities to suspend this tradition at this game.

"It is important to protect a great rivalry and to conduct it in the most mutually respectful way possible," said Dr. Bartner.

1967 - O.J. vs. Beban

In our week-long series documenting some defining moments in the Crosstown Rivalry, let's start with possibly the biggest game in the series.

In 1967, UCLA came in ranked No. 1 led by eventual Heisman Trophy winner Gary Beban.  The No. 4 Trojans were carried by junior running back O.J. Simpson, who would win the Heisman Trophy the following season.

What was at stake?  Just the Rose Bowl and national championship...

Here's how it played out as portrayed in the new documentary, "A City Divided"...

UCLA Tuesday: Notes

Rivalry week in full effect...
  • Does anyone know who USC is playing this week?  "This week is always big for our school, big for this program and goes back a long way.  The battle of LA," said senior QB Matt Barkley.
  • Brown-UCLA-Tues-McG.jpgThe most unique aspect of the Crosstown Rivalry is the close proximity of the two campuses, which means a ton of familiarity between the rosters.  "The main part about this game is you know half the people on their team," said Marqise Lee.  "You are going against the people you grew up with throughout your life."
  • Given that, bragging rights are always on the line for the players and the fans.  "I want to win, so I can talk smack back and forth," Lee said.  "We are going to keep our composure though.  After the game, that's when the smack talking begins."
  • Barkley admitted that he would take some pride in finishing his career 4-0 against the Bruins.  He remembered his first three games succinctly, "Crazy ending...hurt ankle...blowout."
  • The 50-0 "blowout" to which Barkley is referring is ancient history with a new coaching staff and quarterback in Westwood.  "They are a much improved team from last year, that's for sure," said Barkley.  "We are not even dwelling on that.  It's going to be a great match-up."
  • The stakes are raised this year as well with a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game on the line.  "Hopefully, it's not my last time playing in the Rose Bowl," said Barkley.
  • Silas Redd, who hopes to be healthy enough to play Saturday, is new to the rivalry, but his teammates explained the significance to him.  "I am their brother now, so I feel the same way," said Redd, who has major respect for the Rose Bowl given his Big Ten background.  "This will be a great opportunity to play there at such a prestigious stadium."
  • Robert Woods refuses to be negative about his diminishing statistics.  "Each and every Saturday, I go into the game with that thought in my head that it's going to be my day," he said.  RB D.J. Morgan, who is one of Woods' closest friends, ribbed him as the media descended upon the junior receiver.  "Why do they want to interview you, you've got two catches for -3 [yards]?" Woods relayed the story with a smile.
  • If Marqise Lee's prediction is correct, he will need some help from Woods.  "I think it's going to be a shootout," said Lee.  "It's going to be a good game."
  • Here is Lane Kiffin's post-practice press conference...

The Morning After: One Step Closer

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

Los Angeles and Gauntlet bragging rights are on the line this week as the Trojans take on the Bruins at the Rose Bowl.  But more importantly, the crosstown rivalry will determine the Pac-12 South representative in the conference championship game.

DSC_9314.jpg"This was such a unique week in how everything set up after two losses and still having so much to play for," said head coach Lane Kiffin. "We made sure everyone understood where we are at and what is at stake. It is like a NFL-feel of a playoff."

The Trojans have embraced this NFL-like playoff that they are fully immersed in. "We control our own destiny and we have to win to move on to the next stage," said quarterback Matt Barkley.

However, safety T.J. McDonald prefers to just focus on the Trojans' next opponent UCLA rather than the implications with it. "I just see UCLA as our next opponent. It is a rivalry game and we need to go into there full force," McDonald said.

With so much on the line this week, the pressure isn't anything new to USC. The Trojans have been faced with many challenges this season and have adapted accordingly.

"I think our guys have done a great job on focusing on what matters, to win these games to decide our future," Barkley said. "I think it's a good situation for us. We have a goal and there's no doubt that we can achieve that."

Luckily, the Trojans' Rose Bowl hopes are not out of the question yet. Though a formidable task is ahead in the coming weeks, USC is ready to face UCLA in what will probably be the most exciting game of the season. The 38-17 victory over Arizona State set USC one step closer to the Pac-12 title and the Rose Bowl.

USC and UCLA will play for the Pac-12 South title at the Rose Bowl next Saturday.

Playoff Victory

Breslin-Horton-Sack-ASU-McG.jpgThe Trojans won round one of what is basically a three-game tournament to decide the Pac-12 championship.  "It was like an NFL feel of a playoff," said Lane Kiffin about round one against ASU.  "We got one down and now we've got another one next week."  Despite three losses and few national believers, USC controls its own Rose Bowl destiny.  "We have a goal and no doubt that we can achieve it," said Matt Barkley.

Return of the D

After Oregon embarrassed USC's defense last week, the Trojans responded by forcing four turnovers, seven sacks and 11 tackles for loss.  The Sun Devils only scored on short fields after turnovers and a pick-six.  "The storyline would be the defense.  We were very aggressive and the players really got after the ball today creating turnovers," said Kiffin.  T.J. McDonald led a unit that showed a lot of pride today.  "It's been rough because we know what type of defense we have," the All-American safety said.  "This was a big game for us to get our swag back."  Lamar Dawson (11 tackles and an INT), Leonard Williams (1 sack, 2 TFLs and an INT), Morgan Breslin (1.5 sacks) and McDonald (7 tackles and an INT) were the standouts.

#BELEEVE

Marqise Lee had an allergic reaction before the game, which caused his face to swell and led to exhaustion.  "I was really about to the point of thinking there is some really bad karma going on this week," Kiffin told the media the story.  "I'm going, 'This really can't be happening right now.'"  Apparently, nothing can slow down Lee, who accounted for 227 yards (161 receiving and 66 rushing) and a TD.  Barkley endorsed Lee's candidacy for the Heisman Trophy, "He is every bit deserving.  He's done some tremendous things this year with the ball as a receiver, as a kick returner and across the board."

Turnover Fest

McNeal-ASU-McG.jpgThe first half was not pretty football, especially offensively, and the five turnovers had the Coliseum groaning.  Matt Barkley tied a career high with three interceptions.  "I'm pleased with the win...but you never want that to happen," said Barkley.  "You never want those picks.  It's some weird situations and we just got to make sure they don't happen again."

In the Moody

With Silas Redd out due to an undisclosed injury, Curtis McNeal carried the load with 164 yards on 31 rush attempts.  He scored three touchdowns, including a 22-yard scamper on a rare traditional running back screen.  "I just prepared myself throughout the week of practice and I was ready to compete with my team," said McNeal.  The running back's performance gives great credit to the offensive line, which only gave up one negative run.

Where's Woody

Robert Woods was held to two catches for -3 yards.  Barkley just missed him on a big play over the middle, and he had a touchdown called back due to an offensive pass interference.  Woods has always been a selfless player, but he wants to produce more than he has been.  "He's human.  You play receiver; you want the ball.  It's nothing negative.  He was just a little bit down," said Kiffin.

Extra-Point...

Kiffin on the game ball controversy: "It's been a long two weeks.  I felt bad about that for all 'SC people.  It was an unfortunate situation what happened with the ball deal."

The O Zone

USC will play bigger teams than Coppin St., but not many rosters will have the size to handle Omar Oraby.  In only 14 minutes, the 7'2" center controlled the paint with 16 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks.  "Thank goodness he's eligible," said Kevin O'Neill.  "He makes a huge difference in our team.  This guy is only scratching the surface."  Oraby is also an accomplished free throw shooter, which is a rare skill at his height.  He made all six attempts tonight.

Byron Wesley has a rebuilt jump shot, a sculpted physique and a jolt of confidence.  The sophomore is using more of a set shot than a jump shot, but he did knock down three threes, which is two more than he made all of last year.  Even more, playing alongside other offensive talents, he has much more space on the floor to employ his slashing game.  "It makes it way easier," said Wesley.  "We have players that can do pretty much everything...shoot, drive, so it just opens up the court for me."  O'Neill challenged Wesley in practice to be more consistent with his effort, and he praised him as the "best perimeter defender" for USC tonight.

In-n-Out

Kevin O'Neill played 15 players, including 11 in the regular rotation.  In the last decade of Trojan basketball, no team has had this kind of depth at the head coach's disposal.  "I'm still feeling my way through the post thing," said O'Neill about divvying up the minutes to his loaded front court.  "It's not like we are putting bad players in for good players.  We are putting good players in.  I'd be comfortable starting the 14 guys we have on our team in different situations."  The odd men out tonight were Renaldo Woolridge, Brendyn Taylor and Strahinja Gavrilovic, who played only the final minute.

And 1...

J.T. Terrell struggled in the first half going 0-for-7 from the field, but he settled down to score 15 of his game high 17 points after the break.

Here is Byron Wesley after the game...

2012 Game 10: USC vs. ASU

Arizona State (5-4, 3-3) at No. 19 USC (6-3, 4-3)

Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum at Noon PT on Pac-12 Networks

Will-Sutton-ASU.jpgSun Devil to Watch: Junior DT Will Sutton

He is the most disruptive defensive lineman USC has played against this season.  The Corona Centennial product leads the Pac-12 in tackles for loss (15) and ranks second in sacks (8.5).  Against Oregon, Sutton injured himself while forcing a fumble on the first series of the game, but he is back and healthy.  He has at least half a sack in every game this season, except for the two he missed.

3 Keys

Attack the Spread

The Trojans were passive last week trying to corral the Ducks in fear that a missed tackle would mean a big play, which is contrary to the mentality of the defensive leaders like T.J. McDonald, Dion Bailey and Nickell Robey.  With the USC offense putting up big numbers, the defense can afford to play aggressively in an effort to force turnovers and negative plays.  The Sun Devils will try to mirror Oregon's game plan, but as Lane Kiffin pointed out, nobody does the spread option like the Ducks.

Strength Against Strength

USC's pass offense is third best in the conference, while ASU's pass defense is tops in the league.  Matt Barkley has thrown for 977 yards combined the last two weeks, but the Sun Devils only give up 161 pass yards per game.  With that said, ASU's secondary has loosened the last two weeks against quality opposition, and nobody has had an answer for Marqise Lee.  If the Trojans can play a turnover free game, they will be nearly unstoppable with the ball.

Set the Table

In the face of a two-game losing streak and controversy, the Trojans must band together to turn the momentum.  The next three weeks are filled with opportunity and excitement, but the ASU match-up cannot be overlooked.  With the Trojan Family returning for Homecoming weekend, the team must put together a performance to ring in the "We Are...'SC" chants and set-up a Pac-12 South decider next week at the Rose Bowl.

USC Olympic Champion Day

"We couldn't be prouder," Villaraigosa said. "I'm a Bruin, but I've got an honorary doctorate from USC and I'm very proud of that. Today we honor these great Olympic athletes. We have one of the best universities in the world here in Los Angeles in USC. As a Bruin, I can tell you, I'm proud."

Meet Omar Oraby

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

Name - Omar Oraby

Position - Center

Class - Junior

Size - 7'2", 270 lbs.

Age - 21

High School - Modern English HS (Cairo, Egypt)

Game - He is a mountain of a man.  Oraby is one of the tallest players in college basketball and plays his size.  He has soft hands and a good finishing touch.  At Rice, he set the school record for blocks in a season, so he is a rim protector on the defensive end.  He also made 71% of his free throws, which is exceptional for his size.

Before USC - He transferred in from Rice, where he played two seasons.  As a freshman, he contributed sparingly, but he scored six points per game last year.  Amazingly, he set the single-season rejection record despite playing only 11 minutes per game on average.  Oraby, who grew up in Egypt, played for his country's junior national team at the FIBA 2009 U19 World Championships.

March to Madness: Second Chance Kids

USC men's basketball season begins Friday night at 8 p.m. as Coppin State enters Galen Center to take on the Trojans.  With Omar Oraby now cleared to play, USC is loaded with three seven-footers and a cast of veteran transfers itching to compete for a tournament spot.

Learn about the new Trojans and the second chance mentality this group is embracing in our first episode of "March to Madness"...

Oraby Cleared

Rice transfer Omar Oraby was cleared to play for USC this season after his NCAA petition was approved.  The 7'2" center could start the opening game for the Trojans as he's been working alongside fellow seven-footer Dewayne Dedmon.

Oraby, who set the Owls school record for blocks with 54 last season, was the star of the Salute to Troy preseason exhibition. The junior is a mountainous presence, but displays soft hands and the ability to finish around the bucket.

For any fans of "The Wire"...

Woolridge-Salute-PC.jpgName - Renaldo Woolridge

Position - Small Forward

Class - Redshirt Senior

Size - 6'9", 220 lbs.

Age - 22

High School - Harvard-Westlake HS (Sherman Oaks)

Game - Despite his length, Woolridge is more of a perimeter offensive threat.  He is a plus leaper who can explode to the rim, but he shot more than 40% of his field goal attempts last year at Tennessee from three-point range.  He made a solid 37.2% from distance.  Woolridge has a knack for showmanship.  The senior is an accomplished hip hop artist, and will no doubt entertain crowds at Galen Center this season.

Before USC - Woolridge played parts of four seasons in Tennessee, but redshirted his first junior year due to an ankle injury.  His production as a Vol came mostly in spurts.  He scored a season-high 17 points last year in Lexington against the national champion Kentucky Wildcats, including making five of six from three.  Coming out of Harvard-Westlake, he was ranked No. 53 overall.  He is the son of 13-year NBA pro Orlando Woolridge, who died this past summer.

Game Balls

A USC football student manager has been relieved of all duties with the Trojan football team for intentionally deflating, below NCAA-regulated levels, some game footballs used by USC's team during the first half in last Saturday's game against Oregon.

Game officials discovered and re-inflated three of the balls before the game and two others at halftime.  All balls were regulation in the second half.

When informed of this allegation by the Pac-12, USC investigated it immediately. The student manager confirmed that he had, without the knowledge of, or instruction from, any USC student-athlete, coach, staff member or administrator, deflated those game balls after they had been tested and approved by officials prior to the game.

As a result, the Pac-12 reprimanded USC and imposed a fine.

Public Recognition Awards

The NCAA recognized USC women's golf, men's indoor track and field and women's soccer for having an academic progress rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of its respective sports.

"Thank you for your leadership and support of the academic reform efforts," said NCAA President Mark Emmert in a letter to USC.  "These teams represent intercollegiate athletics at its best.  Once again, I congratulate you, the head coach, team, student-athletes, athletics department and institution for the outstanding academic achievements of these teams."

USC women's golf has earned the academic excellence award for eight consecutive seasons now, while women's soccer was honored for the seventh time in the eight years of the APR's existence.  The same three teams were given public recognition awards last year.

Led by Sophia Popov, USC women's golf is ranked No. 1 by "Golf World".

The greatest intersectional rivalry in college football, the annual USC vs. Notre Dame game, will kickoff at 5 p.m. PT on November 24 at the Coliseum and be broadcast live nationally on ABC.

The Trojans have won nine of the last 10 meetings, but the Fighting Irish are undefeated this season.  USC defeated Notre Dame 31-17 in South Bend last year.

USC men's basketball season tips off Friday night at 8 p.m. at Galen Center.

wise.UCI.jpgName - Eric Wise

Position - Small forward/power forward

Class - Redshirt Senior

Size - 6'6", 240 lbs.

Age - 22

High School - King HS (Riverside)

Game - Wise idolized Charles Barkley growing up, and while "Sir Charles" is a lofty comparison for any college player, he does have a similar build to the "round mound of rebound."  Since coming to USC, he has completely remade his body from his Irvine days (pictured via OC Register) into a sculpted powerhouse.  According to head coach Kevin O'Neill, Wise grades out as the most efficient jump shooter on the team particularly from mid-range distance.  He is more comfortable at power forward, but will play some small forward as well this season.

Before USC
- Wise is a proven entity in college basketball.  He averaged 16.3 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per contest in his final season with the Anteaters.  His rebounding average was the most by a UCI player in two decades.  He averaged 16.3 and 14.0 points per game as a sophomore and freshman, respectively, so he was productive all three years.  He actually played against the Trojans twice as an Anteater.

Feisty Freshman

On Sunday, USC women's basketball will tip off its season opener against Gonzaga at Galen Center. After missing out on the NCAA Tournament last season, the Women of Troy are back and reloaded with some fresh faces in the mix led by freshman guard Jordan Adams.

Jordan-Adams1.jpgThe 6'1", McDonald's All-American and WBCA All-American is a Southern California native and dreamed of donning the cardinal and gold. "I chose USC because it is close to home. I love this school and the Trojan family," Adams said. "Coach [Michael] Cooper and [Galen Center] were also a big part of my decision."

Adams hails from Mater Dei High School and already feels comfortable with her new team despite the big transition from high school to college basketball. "It's a lot different because it is faster and the players are much stronger," Adams said. "It was a big change and I had to adapt quickly to the game if I was going to play at all."

Despite being only a freshman, Adams has big ambitions for her first year at Troy. She already has adjusted to Cooper's coaching style. "Coach Cooper and I have a really good relationship on and off the court," Adams said. "I am constantly in his office watching film so I can continue to get better. I want to get this team a championship this year."

Based on her resume, Adams might be just what the Women of Troy need to make those tournament dreams a reality. While at Mater Dei, Adams was named the 2012 Orange County Athlete of the Year and was co-MVP of the league. Jordan still holds the school record for single-game and career assists.

"I've always had the drive, success or not. I think as long as you have the drive, success will come from that," Adams said. "It put me here and I don't want to get complacent. I want more and I want to excel here in college."

As the 2012-13 rapidly approaches, Adams and the Women of Troy aren't looking ahead to their difficult schedule. "Right now, we are taking it day-by-day and we are working on functioning as a team," she said. "I'm not concerned with particular opponents just yet. We are focusing on playing as a team and perfecting the offense."

Jordan Adams will make her debut on Sunday, November 11 at 2 pm.

The Trojans defense remains under the microscope.
  • After the worst defensive performance statistically in school history, Lane Kiffin has sensed a different attitude from that side of the ball this week.  "I can see our defense's excitement to get back out on the field.  Saturday can't come fast enough."
  • The head coach has taken responsibility.  The defensive architect Monte Kiffin has blamed himself.  And, the players have owned up to their mistakes.  "We need to take all of it," said LB Hayes Pullard about responsibility.  "The coaches coach; the players play.  They give us the scheme and the plays to go out there and we need to go out there and execute them.
  • Pullard is one of many prideful people on the Trojans defense, so the 62 point barrage was tough to swallow.  "It was tough to be a part of.  It humbled us," he said.  "I've learned from it and I promised myself that it wouldn't happen again."
  • Monte Kiffin does not want to get into specific changes in case Oregon comes up again in a month, but he spoke plainly about the performance, "We need to get better."
  • Arizona State is not Oregon, but the Sun Devils will run a version of the uptempo spread offense this week.  "They present issues because [Taylor Kelly] is playing very efficient with his quarterback rating," said Lane Kiffin.  "They have three different backs in there that make plays...and the quarterback's ability to make plays when things break down."
  • T.J. McDonald is the leader of the defense, so he needs to rally the troops after two morale sapping losses.  "We've got a chip on our shoulder right now," said the senior captain.  "We want to prove that we're the defense that we know we are.  We just want to be able to rebound from last week."
  • Several Trojans voted for the first time Tuesday.  Among them, Robert Woods drove all the way back to Carson to exercise his constitutional right.  He proudly wore his "I voted" sticker all day.
  • Here is Lane Kiffin mostly on the defense...

In other Trojan hoops news, Nikola Vucevic (pictured) is thriving in his more prominent role with the Orlando Magic.  In only his second game with his new team, the NBA sophomore posted a double-double (18 points and 13 rebounds).

Name - J.T. Terrell

Position - Shooting Guard

Class - Junior

Size - 6'3", 185 lbs.

Age - 20

High School - West Charlotte (Burlington, NC)

Game - USC desperately needed an injection of offense, and Terrell should be just the player to provide it.  He is a natural scorer, who can create his own shot off the dribble, while also spacing the floor as a shooter.  As you can see from the photo above, he is not lacking in athleticism either.  To maximize his potential, he will have to improve his shot-selection and consistent defensive effort.

Before USC
- Like Ari Stewart, Terrell chose Wake Forest after an accomplished high school career.  As a senior, he averaged 30 points per game and ESPN.com ranked him the 49th best prospect in the country.  He contributed 11 points per contest as a freshman in the ACC before transferring to Peninsula College, where he became the No. 1 junior college player in the nation by some recruiting services.

The Trojans are happy to be back at work trying to shake off back-to-back losses.
  • On this election day, Lane Kiffin declined to answer all political questions, calling it "a no-win," but please make sure you cast your vote.  The blog makes for good reading on polling lines.
  • DSC_6933.jpgKiffin endorsed Matt Barkley and Marqise Lee, whose remarkable play has been overshadowed by team losses.  "I do feel bad because we're not winning the games, the storyline, rightfully so, is not about Matt and Marqise, it's about what we're doing wrong," said Kiffin.  "If we were winning the games, the storylines would be about Matt's play and how he's even playing better than a year ago.  And, Marqise just setting the world on fire putting up numbers that nobody's ever seen before as a true sophomore."
  • Barkley's only individual negative has been an increase in interceptions from seven in 2011 to 10 already this season.  Of the 10, Kiffin estimated that seven were the result of poor decision-making.  He challenged his senior QB to set a goal of no picks over the next three games.
  • On the Oregon loss, Kiffin again called the defense "unacceptable," and made it clear the coaching staff took the blame.  He also considered going for an onsides kick earlier in the contest, but "really kept having faith that we were going to stop them."
  • He also called freshman left tackle Max Tuerk's play "phenomenal" against Oregon's talented ends.  "He's done a great job stepping up in that role, especially as a true freshman," said senior center Khaled Holmes.  "He's the first true freshman to start at left tackle for USC and that's saying a lot for such a storied program."
  • The offensive line as a whole has improved gradually since the rough outing at Stanford.  "We're starting to come together.  We've played better each week," said Holmes.  "We're still not as consistent as I'd like to be, but we're definitely progressing."
  • Holmes will be put to the test this week against Arizona State DT Will Sutton, who leads the Pac-12 with 15 tackles for loss.  "He's a great player.  He had a knee injury earlier in the year, but he's back and looked great against Oregon State.  It should be a fun match-up for us," said Holmes.
  • As a captain, Holmes is tasked with rallying the troops after two emotional losses.  "Fortunately, it's not too difficult with this team.  We still have a lot to play for.  We can potentially end this season on a very positive note."
  • Marqise Lee was among a couple players who engaged in a little Twitter trash talk last night with what they thought was UCLA CB Randall Goforth.  As it turned out, the Goforth account was not the player, but a UCLA fan trying to start something.  "[Goforth] is actually a friend of mine," said Lee, who thought the two were just "playing around."  Goforth and a couple other Bruins texted Lee to let him know that it was not him.
  • UCLA head coach Jim Mora Jr. called Lane Kiffin to alert him that the Twitter account was fake.  Kiffin then relayed the info to Lee and Robert Woods and told them to "knock it off," according to Lee.
  • A long, but interesting Kiffin presser today...

Three different Trojans had sacks this weekend...

Heisman Worthy

Jurrell Casey, DT, Titans - 5 tackles (2 solo), sack for -22 yards and a forced fumble

Casey-Titans.jpgThe Tennessee Titans had a rough game against Chicago, but that did not stop Casey from making the consistent impact that has been his professional calling card.  He has started every game this season as the Titans run stuffer, but he recorded his first sack of the year Sunday.  The five tackles accounted for his third most productive game of the season.

All-American Caliber

Carson Palmer, QB, Raiders - 39/61 for 414 yards and 4 TDs/3 INTs

Kaluka Maiava, LB, Browns - 6 tackles (4 solo) and 2 pass deflections

Reggie Bush, RB, Dolphins - 10 carries for 41 yards and an electrifying TD run

Rey Maualuga, LB, Bengals - 7 tackles (3 solo)

Lawrence Jackson, DE, Lions - 2 solo tackles and a sack

Kyle Moore, DE, Bills - One sack for -8 yards

The Morning After: Keeping the Faith

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

The next two weeks will be the biggest challenge for USC as the Trojans will play Pac-12 South opponents, Arizona State and UCLA for the Pac-12 South title. Despite the Trojans 6-3 overall record and 4-3 conference mark, they still have much to play for this season.

Barkley-Oregon-SH.jpg"We have a lot of football left and the season is not over," said quarterback Matt Barkley. "We have to make the most of the remaining games. At this point in the season, our focus is on Arizona State and Arizona State only."

Though it might be easy to start looking at the potential finish line, USC must remain focused on the task at hand. "We are just thinking about one game at a time," said linebacker Hayes Pullard.  "We need to go in and watch film so we can overcome these struggles that we have been going through."

Since UCLA defeated Arizona last night, USC must win its remaining conference games in order to have the chance to compete in the Pac-12 Conference Championship game on Nov. 30. Permitting that occurs, the Trojans may face the Oregon Ducks for the second time this season.

However, USC would not have the comfort of playing in front of a home crowd. Instead, the team would face the daunting task of playing at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.

Senior safety T.J. McDonald believes that USC would perform better if a rematch with Oregon would occur. "If we get the chance, I'm sure we would come more prepared and ready to go," McDonald said.

Although the Trojans currently possess three conference losses, it is not outrageous to think that they may end up in the Rose Bowl. USC controls its own destiny and most importantly the Trojans must keep the faith.

Lee-Wally-Skalij-LAT.jpgOregon put up an absurd 62 points and 730 total yards, which are both records by an opponent against the Trojans.  USC has lost back-to-back games to spread teams, and the defense has been exposed after a strong first half of the season.  "If you have back-to-back games like that with over 600 yards [given up], we've got to look at what we're doing obviously.  That's not where we want to be," said Lane Kiffin when asked about needing a philosophical change to his defensive schemes.  "I do not have that answer for you right now or else I would have tried to fix it during the game."

Red Zone Mistakes

USC nearly matched the Ducks with 615 total yards, but the Trojans did not maximize their opportunities in the red zone.  On USC's first drive, the Trojans settled for a field goal after Nelson Agholor dropped a touchdown pass.  On the second series, Matt Barkley threw an interception in the end zone after it appeared Marqise Lee was held on the route.  And right before the half, Lee fumbled trying to make a play after the catch.  "Unfortunately, we shot ourselves in the foot," said Lane Kiffin.  "The game comes down to three offensive possessions."

Marvelous Marqise

Lee backed up his Pac-12 record setting performance against Arizona with 157 yards receiving on 12 catches and 2 TDs.  He also returned eight kickoffs for 251 yards including an 82-yard sprint down the sideline.  On the national stage, he made another case to be considered the best player in the country.  "I am really amazed at what Marqise does," said Agholor.  "You just talk about the passion he plays with as a football player and that's something that every day I try to mirror."

Appreciate Barkley

Barkley-Wally-Skalij-LAT.jpgDo not take Matt Barkley for granted.  The senior quarterback has passed for a combined 977 yards the last two weeks.  Yes, both games were losses.  Yes, he also threw four interceptions.  But, no USC quarterback has ever produced those numbers in back-to-back games.  He felt the pressure to make plays tonight as the Trojans had to match the Ducks score for score.  "We knew it was going to be a shootout," said Barkley.  "I felt like we had to play perfect on offense."

Full Nelson

True freshman WR Nelson Agholor (video interview below) had a career game with six catches for 162 yards and his first career touchdown.  "We really felt that Nelson would have a really big game today," said Kiffin.  "We knew that there was going to be focus on [Lee and Robert Woods], especially after last week.  He played great."

The Big Picture

Sitting at 6-3 after a preseason No. 1 ranking, Lane Kiffin shouldered the blame for the disappointment.  "All of it," the head coach took the criticism straight on.  "We're not pointing fingers here," but, "you've always got to look at yourself."  The Trojans can still salvage this season by winning the Pac-12 South, which would set-up a likely rematch with the Ducks in Eugene for a spot in the Rose Bowl.

Extra-Point...

The Pride of Woods

Robert Woods earned a much deserved Coliseum ovation after fighting for every yard in the dying seconds despite the outcome no longer being in doubt.  "The effort that he plays, in probably his 80th snap of the game, speaks a lot of these kids," said Kiffin about Woods.

Penalties

"I was proud of how the kids cleaned up the penalties," said Kiffin.  The Trojans had only three penalties enforced against them and no personal fouls.

At Last...

USC women's soccer battled and battled this season as seemingly every game went to overtime and ended in a hard luck result.  In the season finale today, the Women of Troy's perseverance and spirit got a just reward with an overtime victory over No. 2 UCLA.

The Trojans took a 2-1 lead with 10 minutes to go on a gorgeous individual goal by senior Samantha Johnson, but the Bruins scrapped home the equalizer with only 90 seconds left in regulation.  Fittingly, USC's season ended in its ninth overtime game.

While the Women of Troy were just 1-4-3 in overtime coming into the Crosstown Rivalry, Jordan Marada slammed home the golden goal to set off a celebration which should give the young Trojans plenty of momentum heading into 2013.

Here are the goals by Haley Boysen, Johnson and Marada plus an epic goal cam look at the winner...

Duck to Watch: Freshman QB Marcus Mariota

Mariota-Oregon.jpgOregon running backs Kenjon Barner and De'Anthony Thomas are known entities, but Mariota is new to the rivalry.  Lane Kiffin has touted the redshirt freshman as the best quarterback of the Chip Kelly era in Eugene.  The numbers back it up.  He has thrown 18 TDs to only 5 INTs as a passer, while also tormenting defenses as the top rushing quarterback in the Pac-12 (47 rush yards per game and 3 TDs).  However, this is by far the biggest test of his young career.

3 Keys

Tackle, Tackle, Tackle

The most underrated play of USC's win over Oregon last year was Jawanza's Starling's open field tackle-for-loss to push the Ducks final field goal attempt back a few yards.  Starling was one of many Trojans that night who made plays to keep Oregon from breaking off its customary long runs.  The pressure will be on the back seven to force the Ducks into extended drives by holding the edge and bringing down shifty ball carriers.

Third Quarter

If the Trojan Family shows up in full voice and clad in cardinal as expected, USC should come out on fire.  However, the Trojans have struggled after halftime this season.  Oregon has barely had to play its starters in the second half so far this year, but historically, the Ducks wear opponents down with their uptempo offense.  To win this game, USC will have to turn around a lot of 2012 trends (penalties, turnovers, etc.), but third quarter energy and adjustments will swing the momentum.

Remember the Feeling

Was 2011 that long ago?  The pundits talk about Oregon as if the Ducks are invincible.  And maybe so... But wasn't it only a year ago that the Trojans went into Eugene and spoiled Oregon's national championship hopes by dominating the Ducks for three quarters.  USC brought back a similar team, and so did Oregon.  If the Trojans can find the disciplined swagger that made November 2011 a special month, why can't they make a run for the 2012 Pac-12 title?

Endeavour Exhibit

The space shuttle Endeavour has found its home at the California Science Center in Exposition Park, and the exhibit opened this week, so patrons are expected to flood the museum this weekend.  As a word of advice, we suggest USC fans take the metro to and from the game, which will be a sellout.

With so much of Los Angeles converging on one area, traffic and parking are expected to be a major problem, so save time and money by riding the train.

SC Classics: USC vs. Oregon in 1972

Nobody beat the Trojans in 1972.  En route to John McKay's third national championship, USC had to overcome Dan Fouts and the Ducks in a downpour in Eugene.

Maybe the greatest college football team ever, the 1972 squad never trailed in the second half of a game.  To quote then Washington State head coach Jim Sweeney, "USC's not the number one team in the country.  The Miami Dolphins are better."

Enjoy a classic Trojans win over the Ducks before the two schools clash again Saturday...

Name - Brendyn Taylor

Position - Guard

Class - Freshman

Size - 6'2", 185 lbs.

Age - 18

High School - Fairfax HS (Los Angeles, CA)

Game - Taylor is the closest thing to former defensive stopper Marcus Simmons on this roster, according to Kevin O'Neill. He is not there yet, but has a ton of potential. For now, he is a long, slasher who needs to refine his offensive game, but has plenty of athleticism with which to work.

Prep Career - At Fairfax, Taylor averaged 18.0 points, 3.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game. Taylor was ranked the No. 17 player in California by Cali High Sports. He helped lead Fairfax to a fifth-place ranking in the CIF Southern Section and a 20-10 record.

Horton was always a factor for the top defensive end award, but Breslin (pictured) has emerged from obscurity to lead USC in sacks (7) and tackles for loss (12).
