Barkley's Breakdown: Marqise Lee

Marqise Lee rewrote the Pac-12 record books with his 345 yards receiving at Arizona. In doing so, he has launched himself into the Heisman race and become the Biletnikoff favorite.

As a marked man, he draws a lot of attention from opposing defenses. Last Saturday, the Wildcats changed their entire defensive scheme in the second half to double team Lee.

In this week's "Barkley's Breakdown," find out how Lee gets open no matter what the coverage is against him.

Pumpkin Carving Contest

Written by USC blog contributor Farren Benjamin

The new John McKay Center celebrated Halloween with its first ever pumpkin carving contest put on by Kristy Morrell, USC's sports nutritionist, the Trojan Athletic Senate and the SAAS staff.

Each athletic program was given a team pumpkin to carve during the week, and they were then displayed on the tables right outside of the highly festive and decorated John McKay Center patio. Student-athletes were then able to vote on their favorite pumpkin as they feasted on tacos, decorated cupcakes and mingled with other athletes.

Men's volleyball (pictured) and track and field tied in votes and took home the award for best pumpkin!

Oregon Wednesday: Notes

The USC defense faces a monumental challenge this week, while also trying to remain disciplined.

  • The penalty questions will not go away for this team. Yesterday, Robert Woods talked about the team having "too much pride" when it comes to defending teammates.  "It's not a street fight," Lane Kiffin said. "It's a game and there's rules within it. A lot of them have the mentality where they're trained to protect their brother and that's cost us in a lot of situations."
  • Robey-Tunnel-Cal-jm.jpgS T.J. McDonald, who was hit with two personal fouls against Arizona, pointed to the bigger picture. "We've got to take within ourselves the fact that we're representing a lot of people out there on the field.  The players that came before us, all the people that are watching us, we don't want to display an undisciplined team."
  • Both McDonald and Drew McAllister were flagged for making contact with a sliding quarterback, which is a major quandary when facing mobile QBs like Matt Scott and Marcus Mariota. "You feel like they are a running back at some point, especially when it's a designed run that's not a quarterback scramble," McDonald said. "It's a quarterback so you want to make him pay for running the ball, but as they are going down, you've got to avoid it as best as you can."
  • As always against this Oregon team, open field tackling will be the key. "It will be just like last year," said Kiffin. "You're going to have to make those tackles in space."
  • With Kenjon Barner as the primary ball carrier, the Ducks rushing attack is more physical than it has been in the past. "They are still as explosive as they were last year," said S Jawanza Starling. "They run a little more physical this year and that's been a good thing for them on offense."
  • Lane Kiffin has not announced a starter at left tackle between Max Tuerk and Aundrey Walker. "We feel really confident with both guys," the head coach said. "Max played really well last week, [but] this would be much more of a test this week with their ability to rush with their two ends, especially with [Dion] Jordan on third downs."
  • The Trojans will play their final four games in Los Angeles, including three in the Coliseum. They are happy to be home. "I am just excited for an exciting atmosphere," said McDonald. "We've got a nasty taste in our mouth. One thing you want is respect back and this is a quick way we can do it. We hope the Coliseum is rocking and we just want to go out there and put on a good show."

Hurricane Sandy Hits Trojan Family

Former USC Song Girl Claudene Christian was a casualty of Hurricane Sandy aboard the HMS Bounty, which sank under the wind and waves off the North Carolina coast. Christian, a crew member on the ship, was found unresponsive in the water early Monday morning, and pronounced dead after being airlifted from the scene.

1990 song girls014.jpgFourteen of the 16 crew members survived in life boats, but Christian and the ship's captain, who is still missing, could not be rescued. She was 42.

Click here for the full story.

"The USC Song Girl Family is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our beautiful former Song Girls, Claudene Christian," said Song Girl coaches Lori Nelson and Dolly Rouse in a joint statement. "Our hearts and prayers go out to her parents and family. As a USC Song Girl, Claudene will always be remembered for her kindness, enthusiasm and charismatic personality. Claudene will be missed by all who knew and loved her."

Christian (pictured far right with the 1990 Song Girls) created a cheerleading doll company as a student at USC*. Initially, she made Song Girl dolls, but eventually the brand grew into the Cheerleader Doll Company.

She chose to sail with the HMS Bounty to celebrate its history as a replica of the 18th century British three-masted ship on which "Mutiny on the Bounty" was based. The vessel was featured in the film version of "Mutiny on the Bounty" and two of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies.

Oregon Tuesday: Notes

With no time to lick their wounds, the Trojans begin preparations for the undefeated Ducks.

  • USC is not entirely over the loss at Arizona, but the Oregon challenge has shaken the Trojans from their doldrums. "We all know we screwed up last week," said Lane Kiffin. "We're moving forward. It's good to have a game like this."
  • Pullard-OR-Prac-McG.jpgLane Kiffin called Oregon "maybe the best team in the country," and said this is the best Oregon team of the Chip Kelly era.
  • Offensively, freshman QB Marcus Mariota has taken the option to a new level with his game-breaking speed. "I think the quarterback's the difference," Kiffin said. "The quarterback's speed is faster than the other guys that have been there. When he gets in the open field, he just runs away from you."
  • Defensively, the Ducks play a true 3-4, which gave USC fits against Stanford and even Cal at times. "They have some long guys on the outside," said Silas Redd. "We're really going to have to attack and hem those guys up."
  • Barkley does not expect to struggle with the 3-4 concept "because we've seen it so much" this year, but he called it a "really physical defense." He singled out the defensive ends as the unit to watch.
  • Oregon aside, the Trojans are concentrating on not beating themselves. "I really think that both games we lost, we've killed ourselves," said Barkley. "We can't play a game like that this week. Oregon is too good."
  • The running backs heard about ball security all weekend from coach Kennedy Polamalu. "To say the least," said Redd when asked if Polamalu dug into the unit. "You be a man about it. You know what you did wrong." In the case of his fumble, Redd was carrying the ball too low.
  • RB Curtis McNeal was forced to watch the game from home as he did not make the trip due to a health issue. "It was very frustrating," said McNeal. "We've got a big challenge this weekend, so last weekend is gone."
  • McNeal admires the Oregon offense and his backfield counterpart DeAnthony Thomas. "They are very explosive. For DeAnthony to be a very small guy, he breaks a lot of tackles. Our defense has just got to wrap up and make sure they're on the ground."
  • The pundits have cast the Trojans as heavy underdogs this week, but McNeal insists that the team is not lacking in self-belief. "We always have confidence because we are USC Trojans. We could be 0-10 and we're always going to have confidence going into the next game. We're not worried about them being undefeated. We're not worried about our two losses. We're just going to execute our game plan and play Trojan football."
  • Here is Coach Kiffin's post-game press conference...

USC WR Marqise Lee was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for his record-setting performance.

Lee shattered the Pac-12 single game record with 345 yards receiving.  His total was the fifth most in NCAA history.

The sophomore also tallied 469 all-purpose yards, which is the second most in NCAA history.  Reggie Bush's statistics against Fresno State are no longer counted in the NCAA record books, but Lee would be third if they were.

2012 NFL Week 8

A quiet week for Trojans as injuries have decimated the ranks...

Heisman Worthy

Kaluka Maiava, LB, Browns - 9 tackles (5 solo)

kaluka_maiava.jpgThe former Rose Bowl MVP is having a career season in Cleveland.  After a strong rookie campaign in 2009, Maiava missed all but two games in his second season.  He bounced back with a solid 2011 playing in all 16 games, but now he is a force in the Browns defense.  On Sunday, he led a gritty 7-6 victory by shutting the San Diego Chargers down amidst heavy rains and muddy conditions.

All-American Caliber

Carson Palmer, QB, Raiders - 14/28 for 209 yards and 2 TD passes in a win

Matt Cassel, QB, Chiefs - 20/30 for 218 yards and a TD pass plus 35 yards rushing

Anthony McCoy, TE, Seahawks - 2 catches for 27 yards

Keith Rivers, LB, Giants - 7 solo tackles in a win

Clay Matthews, LB, Packers - 4 tackles (3 solo) in a victory

Marqise the Magnificent

Lee-AZ-Wally-Skalij-LA-Times.jpgSophomore WR Marqise Lee put on a remarkable show as he hauled in 16 receptions for a Pac-12 record 345 yards.  He also scored two touchdowns, and tallied 469 all-purpose yards.  "I've only seen two skill guys like this probably ever...No. 5 and No. 9," Lane Kiffin said referring to Reggie Bush and Lee.  "It's unbelievable.  He's in there like he lost the Super Bowl.  I don't know how you can do more than he does."  Lee was despondent after the game despite his superhuman efforts.  "It's not about the stats.  The main focus is actually winning the game," Lee said.

The Mistakes

The Trojans did not win the game, and the cause of defeat can be traced back to five turnovers and 13 penalties.  "Our mistakes caught up with us," Kiffin said.  On the persistent penalty problem, the head coach is baffled.  "I'm open for any suggestions.  We've tried it all," he said.  The turnovers included two interceptions thrown by Matt Barkley.  "We're not going to win a game if we're not controlling the ball.  We kept shooting ourselves in the foot," said the senior quarterback.

The Missed Opportunity

Despite the penalties and turnovers, USC was in control of the game in the third quarter leading 28-13 with the ball when Robert Woods broke wide open on a double move for a sure touchdown, but the pass was overthrown.  "I'll be thinking about that ball all night," said Barkley. "I got a little too excited seeing how open he was.  I just misjudged it."

Fast Break Offense

Lee-Bleacher-Report.jpgGive Arizona credit.  The Wildcats have a high-powered offense led by future pro QB Matt Scott, who passed for 369 yards and ran for 100 more.  When the USC offense hit a lull in the second half, Rich Rodriguez's offense took advantage with a 26-0 run.  "That's a really good team that we played with a really good quarterback," said Kiffin.

The Final Drive

Trailing 39-36 with 55 seconds left, USC had one last chance to drive for a game-tying field goal or game-winning touchdown.  The Trojans moved the ball well with three consecutive passes for first downs, but quickly ran out of time.  Barkley did not spike the ball after any of the completions to stop the clock, which he said was a coach's decision.  Kiffin decided to go for the big chunk when the Trojans got it to midfield explaining that Arizona had been jumping Lee on the short routes, but the pass fell incomplete, which forced USC into a Hail Mary toss.

Moving Forward

While USC's national championship hopes appear dashed, the Trojans still control their own destiny for the Rose Bowl.  The players are not focusing on anything other than next week's showdown with the Oregon Ducks.  "Stick together," said Matt Barkley about this week. "That's the beauty of football.  You experience the most exhilarating moments of your life and you learn how to cope and deal with losses like this.  Next week, we'll come out firing."

Extra Point...

The Hail Mary

Lee truly believes that he should have or at least could have caught the final pass.  "I really thought No. 9 was going to catch it," Kiffin also believed.  "It wouldn't have surprised me at all.  He caught everything else today."

3 Keys

Let the Record Show

Lane Kiffin and the Trojans have been talking up the Wildcats all week, but they are just 1-3 in the conference for a reason.  Arizona gives up more than 30 points per game on average.  The USC offense will put up a number if the Trojans stay out of their own way.  A clean game in terms of penalties and turnovers will lead to a big night in the desert.

Practice Makes Perfect

Arizona and Oregon love to speed up the tempo with no-huddle.  In a comfortable game against Colorado, Kiffin and the defensive staff substituted as if they were playing the Wildcats or Ducks.  With Arizona and Oregon now back-to-back on the schedule, the USC defense, which has been built to stop these types of offenses, will gets its biggest tests of the season.

Not a Quack

Everyone knows Oregon looms next week, but the Trojans have been well schooled on not talking or thinking about the Ducks before hurdling the Wildcats.  The test in Tucson is USC's final trip outside of Los Angeles for the rest of the regular season.  If the Trojans avoid the trap, the Pac-12 championship will have to go through the Coliseum and the Rose Bowl, USC's two homes.

USC defeated Arizona in a 48-41 shootout last year at the Coliseum.

Hughes starred in both sports at Troy, including earning All-American credentials as a swimmer in 1955 and 1956.  He is credited with popularizing the two-meter position in water polo, and once broke the world record in the 100m breaststroke.

Each month, we interview Athletic Director Pat Haden on the latest news and stories around Heritage Hall.

Haden-Womes-Soccer-PC.jpgWhat are you hoping for from the Friday Night Lights women's soccer match vs. No. 1 Stanford at the Coliseum?

Last time in the Coliseum, women's soccer played a highly-ranked UCLA team in front of 10,000 people and set a new attendance record for a regular season game and beat the Bruins.  We are hoping for similar results this week from our team and our fans.  Our program is really close.  We have played seven overtime games this year.  We could have a great finish.

Click here for tickets to women's soccer at the Coliseum.

Friday is a huge night for USC athletics.  Tell us about the women's volleyball match vs. No. 1 Washington.

The women really appreciate it when people come to support them.  Our team is growing and developing, led by All-American Natalie Hagglund and sensational freshman Samantha Bricio.  We are going to peak at the right time this season.  This is a really significant and important game for us to get that momentum going down the stretch.

Click here for tickets to the women's volleyball "whiteout."

What's the plan for Basketball Salute to Troy on Sunday?

We will be hosting a free open scrimmage for our fans to see for themselves the new men's and women's basketball teams.  I have a much better feeling about the prospects of our teams this year, but I do not want you to take my word for it.  Come out and watch and make up your own mind.  Plus, the event will be great for kids with an autograph session, prizes, contests and giveaways.

Click here for Basketball Salute to Troy information.

Haden-LR-CU-SH.jpgHow can the Trojan Family play a role in the football team's finishing stretch?

These next five games - four of which are in Los Angeles - are going to determine our season.  We need the sold out crowds to provide a real home field advantage like we have faced on the road this year.  Our guys feel it.  We want noise on every single down.  It is going to be a fun month of November.

What do you think of Matt Barkley being named a NFF National Scholar-Athlete?

I am thrilled for Matt who is just one of 15 football players to win this award, and only the 13th Trojan ever to do so.  Once again, it shows you the type of young man he is.  He has done virtually everything right since he has been here.  On the field, he has been as good as any quarterback in conference history with the records he set last week.  In the community, he has gone to Haiti and to Africa and made the world a better place.  And the third bucket, he is a premier student as well. While USC has had incredible athletes over its 125 years, Matt Barkley may well go down as the greatest Trojan of them all when you consider academics, athletics, community service and leadership.

Graduation Rate Goes Up

Across the NCAA and here at Troy, the graduation success rate of student-athletes is on the rise.  Since 2007, USC student-athletes have been graduating at a higher rate than the previous year.

Bateman-Benjamin.jpg2007 - 66%
2008 - 68%
2009 - 69%
2010 - 74%
2011 - 78%
2012 - 79%

The latest numbers are a reflection of student-athletes who started college from 2002-05, so women's lacrosse and sand volleyball were not considered.

USC men's golf, men's tennis, women's rowing, women's tennis and women's volleyball posted perfect graduation rates.  Men's swimming and women's soccer were over 93% and two-thirds of the sports are over 80%.

Arizona Thursday: Notes

The Trojans have wrapped up live practice for the week.

  • Lane Kiffin has not made a decision yet on who will start at left tackle.  If Max Tuerk gets the nod, he will be the first true freshman in USC history to start at left tackle.
  • Kiffin on Tuerk: "We are really comfortable with this situation.  If he plays, I think he will play really well just like he has."
  • The last true freshman to start at right tackle was Winston Justice in 2002.  Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews started as a freshman at weak tackle in 1979 when the offensive tackles would change sides depending on where the tight end lined up.
  • The USC defense is tied for second in the nation in sacks per game.  The defensive line was supposed to be a team weakness, but the group has turned out to be a strength.  "If you go back to training camp, they were a big question," said Lane Kiffin.  "To do what they've done already has been great.  And obviously, we are going to need them with some big time offenses coming up."
  • Here is the rest from Kiffin on his sized down defense, Matt Barkley's mindset and more...

Arizona Wednesday: Notes

The Trojans are preparing for an uptempo game Saturday in the desert.

  • In the week leading up to the Colorado game, the coaches treated the Buffaloes like Alabama, so the players would not take the game for granted.  However, once the game started, the defensive coaches used the game to practice for the next two weeks.  "We rotated based off of preparing for the next two opponents," said Lane Kiffin about substituting far more frequently.  "Even though they weren't no-huddle, we treated our reps that way."
  • DSC_3212.jpgArizona is not exactly like Oregon offensively, but the Wildcats will pose similar problems in terms of pace.  "They are a no-huddle team that tries to get lined up fast and tire you down," said DT George Uko.  "You've just got to get your cleats in the ground and play."
  • Uko estimated that it takes about six to nine consecutive plays before he starts feeling his conditioning against a no-huddle offense, but he knows the offensive linemen across from him are hurting too.
  • Mobile quarterbacks like Matt Scott can be a nightmare for defensive linemen, but Uko actually likes playing dual-threat QBs.  "Sometimes they don't look at their reads.  Instead of reading, they watch the line looking to run," Uko cited Cal's Zach Maynard.  He gets more frustrated by quarterbacks who release the ball quickly.
  • Against the No. 5 offense in the country, Uko is excited about the opportunity for his defense to make a statement.  "I love how our schedule has played out.  We've got our stuff down, and now it's time to play big time ball.  Our defense is ready to shock people."
  • T.J. McDonald stressed forcing "three-and-outs" as the best way to keep the no-huddle from finding its rhythm and the defense fresh.  McDonald and Nickell Robey are used to playing every snap, but even they might end up in a rotation Saturday.  "I'm not a selfish player by any means, but I'd be lying to you if I told you I didn't want to be out there at all times."
  • The Trojans will have DT Leonard Williams available for Saturday.  He was not suspended by the Pac-12 for the altercation which led to his ejection against Colorado.  "It was a learning moment for a true freshman," Kiffin said.  "I know he understands that and it will never happen again."
  • USC always practices in the morning, so the head coach expects his team to respond well to the 12:30 p.m. kickoff.

Arizona Tuesday: Notes

After a celebratory weekend, the Trojans have refocused on the Wildcats.

  • The USC defense will face a new level of offense starting this week with a trip to Arizona.  "We're going to have to step it up even more on defense," said Lane Kiffin.  "They are really good and they're very dangerous."
  • DSC_3136.jpgWhile Arizona is just 4-3 overall, the Wildcats boast the No. 5 ranked offense in the country in Rich Rodriguez's first season.  QB Matt Scott leads the Pac-12 in passing yards per game, while posing a dual threat as the conference's second leading rusher among quarterbacks.  "They are just absolutely lighting people up," said Kiffin.
  • The Wildcats run Rodriguez's trademark 3-3-5 defense with an extra defensive back (called the rover) in their base package.  "Nobody else does that, so it is something new," Kiffin said.
  • Cody Kessler wore No. 35 as the holder in the first half Saturday instead of his usual No. 6.  "We change jerseys all the time with our guys.  Everything's within the college rules," Kiffin explained.
  • Kiffin did not tip his hand one way or the other about who will start at left tackle.  "I have to prepare like [I'm going to start] every week," said freshman Max Tuerk.  "It was awesome to get that experience [against Colorado].  You're in front of 90,000 people, so you've got to not get caught up in the hype."
  • Robert Woods was asked about his future today, but deferred giving any answer.  The junior wide receiver knows that his records are not safe with Marqise Lee around.  "I'm just trying to keep him off my back right now," he joked.
  • Lee was thrilled for Woods to break the all-time USC catch record. "He's a great leader for the receivers and for everybody on the team," said Lee.  "Seeing that smile on his face...I was happy for him.  I felt like I broke it."
  • Here is Lane Kiffin's post-practice media session...

The Morning After: Avoiding the Trap

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

After the record-breaking win at home against Colorado, the Trojans will travel to Tucson for their last game outside of Los Angeles this season. Arizona poses a real threat, especially with an early kick-off, and the looming showdown against Oregon.

Matt-Scott-AZ.jpg"We are going to a place obviously where we are going to have a heat factor with the Noon kick-off," Lane Kiffin said. "They have a great offense so we are going back to work and have a great week of preparation."

The Wildcats currently rank fifth overall in the FBS in passing yards. Two weeks ago, Arizona forced the then 18th-ranked Stanford into overtime. Playing a powerful offensive team on the road, USC needs to remain focused.

"We approach it the same way we approach every week," senior safety T.J. McDonald said. "We just have to execute on opportunities when they come. As long as we do that, making sure we tackle, making sure that we are in tight coverage when they throw the ball and forcing turnovers, it will make them one dimensional and we will work for that this week."

The Trojan defense held Colorado to just two field goals and forced six turnovers. USC will aim to repeat that performance this week against the Wildcats. "[Our strategy] is going to be basically stopping the run, as usual. We need to force them to pass and try to get turnovers," said junior cornerback Nickell Robey.

6-Points: USC 50, Colorado 6

The night belonged to record-setters Matt Barkley and Robert Woods who played flawless football as the Trojans improved to 6-1.

Click here for the recap and final stats.

Barkley in the Books

barkleywoods-McG.jpgMatt Barkley was not satisfied with merely breaking the USC and Pac-12 career touchdown pass record.  Of course, he did surpass the mark en route to tying his own school record of six TD passes in a game, but he also broke the conference single game records for completion percentage going 19/20 (95%) and pass efficiency (319.16 passer rating).  "It's something I did dream of as a kid," said Barkley about playing at USC.  "To be able to be here for four years living those dreams out as a senior, it's something cool.  I'm trying to soak it up."

No Catching Woods

Not to be outdone, Robert Woods became the all-time USC receptions leader with eight more catches on the night, but he also broke a single game Trojan record with four receiving touchdowns.  It took Woods only two and a half seasons to blow by Dwayne Jarrett, Steve Smith, Lynn Swann, Keyshawn Johnson and all the greats in USC history.  "I grew up watching all those receivers," Woods said.  "I don't see myself above them.  I see myself as a part of them in that elite group.  I just want to follow in their footsteps to be a great receiver at USC."

Attacking Football

Colorado is arguably the weakest team on USC's schedule, so Lane Kiffin broke out a no-huddle offense to make sure that his team was aggressive from the outset.  As a result, the Trojans scored their first three touchdowns in a combined one minute and 25 seconds of clock time.   "It went with the emphasis of attacking and really not worrying about who we were playing and coming out firing and making sure that we weren't taking them lightly," said Lane Kiffin.

Turnover Machine

19pick.jpgThe USC defense has now forced multiple turnovers in all seven games this season.  The Trojans set a new season-high with six takeaways on the night (3 forced fumbles and 3 interceptions).  The coaches subbed far more liberally than normal, and they were rewarded with big plays from surprising sources.  DE Kevin Greene came up with the first two sacks of his career, including a forced fumble.  LB Tony Burnett made a remarkable play to steal an interception away from a  receiver.  And, S Gerald Bowman snagged the first interception of his career.

Offensive Firsts

Along with Greene and Bowman getting on the books defensively, WR De'Von Flournoy, RB D.J. Morgan and QB Max Wittek all celebrated a first taste of offensive glory.  Flournoy has been a solid practice performer for years, and now has a catch on his resume.  Wittek lobbed a touchdown pass to Morgan for the first scores of both their careers.  "It was great to get those guys in," said Kiffin, who complimented his reserves.  "A bunch of guys got the experience of playing."

Penalty Cloud

Penalties, particularly in the first half, were the obvious negative on an otherwise celebratory night.  The lack of discipline culminated in freshman DT Leonard Williams getting ejected for punching an opponent in the face mask.  Kiffin was so disappointed by the penalties that he chewed the team out on the sideline before even going into the half and followed it with another stern lecture behind closed doors.  "I thought they responded at halftime to a very critical conversation about penalties and I thought they fixed it," Kiffin said.  "That's not the product we want to put out there and represent our university."

Extra-point...

DMac

While the outcome was still in doubt, Drew McAllister was the defensive star with a first quarter interception, pass breakup and fumble recovery.  "Drew had a great half," said Kiffin.  "Drew's had a really good season.  We've just found more roles for him.  We're really proud of Drew."

Buffalo to Watch: Junior QB Jordan Webb

Webb-Doug-Pensinger-Getty.jpgThe Kansas transfer brings a ton of experience into the Coliseum.  He started 19 games for the Jayhawks before graduating to join Colorado for his final two seasons of eligibility.  While the Buffaloes have had a rough year, Webb sports a solid 8 TD/4 INT ratio.  In the one game CU did win, the quarterback led the way passing for 345 yards and accounting for 4 TDs (2 rush) en route to the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week award.

Record Breakers

With Robert Woods and Matt Barkley on the brink of historical career achievements, Lane Kiffin would love for the duo to celebrate in front of the home fans.  As long as he stays healthy, Woods is a near lock to reel in the five catches needed to eclipse the USC all-time mark.  Barkley is four touchdown passes shy of a Pac-12 record 100, so the senior will need to be pinpoint in the red zone in order to get it done at the Coliseum.

Hang Loose

Colorado has the worst pass defense in the conference and ranks 120 out of 124 teams nationally.  The Trojans have spent the last few weeks establishing a balanced attack, but the passing game lost its rhythm in Seattle.  Finally back at home, the offense can open up the playbook against the Buffaloes.  With Arizona and Oregon on deck, USC needs to remember how to post a big number.

Department of Corrections

Third downs and penalties... The head coach has targeted both as areas in major need of improvement.  In many cases, they go hand-in-hand.  The fewer offensive penalties will likely mean fewer third-and-longs, which will make them easier to convert.  LT Aundrey Walker has been a frequent culprit, so keep an eye on the competition as freshman LT Max Tuerk gets a chance to stabilize that side of the offensive line.

Matt Barkley broke the school record with six touchdown passes at Boulder last year.

The Sharks

USC has taken great pride in its special teams during the Lane Kiffin era under the leadership of John Baxter.  The Trojans have blocked kicks and punts at a rate of more than one every other game in the last three years (17 blocks in 31 games).

shark-attack.jpgAs part of his unique teaching method, Baxter names all the special teams units

For example, the field goal block team is called "The Regulators" because "the ball has to pass through us before it passes through the uprights," he explains.  The kickoff coverage unit is known as "Strikeforce" as they serve as "the tip of the spear."

As you cheer on the Trojans at the Coliseum Saturday, Baxter would like to see the fans get involved by saluting "The Sharks" when they take the field.  The punt block team, which accounted for a touchdown last week at Washington, "smells blood in the water" and comes after the punter with ferocity.

When USC forces a punt, the band will play the theme song from "Jaws" and the video board will break out its best "Shark Week" footage, which is your cue to place a hand on your head in the shape of a fin.  The punt coverage team will do the same before taking the field.

Matt vs. Women's Soccer

USC women's soccer has a big week ahead.  The Women of Troy host a trio of Pac-12 games starting with Utah (Friday at 3:30 p.m.) and Colorado (Sunday at 1 p.m.) on McAlister Field leading up to the Coliseum classic against No. 1 Stanford on October 26.

While USC is known as a football school, the Trojans are pretty good at futbol as well.  The senior quarterback tested his skills on the pitch against some our soccer stars in the new Matt Vs.

Home Cooking

With the return of Matt Barkley to lead an offense loaded with elite skill position players, expectations were high that the Trojans would light up scoreboards this season. However, the offense has found life on the road difficult in 2012, but five of the next six games will take place in Los Angeles.

Coliseum JP CAL 06.jpgUSC has won its two Coliseum contests by a combined score of 76-19, but the first half schedule has been unusually front-loaded with road games. The Trojans and Oregon State Beavers are the only two teams from BCS conferences to play two or less home games.

By comparison, Oregon will play its first true road game tonight at Arizona State after leaving Eugene just once so far this season for a game against Washington State in Seattle.

The Trojans are hoping a sold out crowd this weekend, and likely the rest of the home slate, will inspire the big plays to flow freely.

"It's always good to play at home in front of your crowd," said senior captain T.J. McDonald. "We know that it will be electric out there and the energy will pick us up. If it is a later game, it is always good to have the motivation from our fans because they are the 12th man on the field."

USC took off at a similar point last season. The 2011 Trojans won just two of their first six games by double digits, while the current group has beaten its opponents by 10+ in all five of its victories.

Matt Barkley actually had the same number of touchdown passes (16) through six games last year as he does so far in 2012. He finished 2011 with a Pac-12 record 39 scoring throws.

While USC's performances to date may not be as impressive as the fans hoped or pundits expected, the Trojans are primed to finish with a flourish. In the next seven weeks, the Coliseum could potentially host three top 10 opponents including a Pac-12 Championship game.

The stage is set.  Now, the Trojans must hit their stride.

Former USC men's basketball point guard Brandon Granville, who led the Trojans to the Elite Eight in 2001, will return to the program as the radio analyst on ESPN Radio 710.

Granville has been working as an attorney since his playing days ended.  He still sits atop the Trojan record books with the most career assists and steals.

Granville will be replacing longtime analyst and former assistant coach Jim Hefner, who leaves his radio post after 15 years, but will likely remain as a frequent contributor to the broadcast.  Chris Fisher returns for his third season behind the mic calling the play-by-play.

A Special Saturday

A sold out crowd could be in for a day to remember Saturday as two of the all-time great Trojans, Matt Barkley and Robert Woods, are on the verge of breaking major historical marks.

Barkley-Woods-Sentinel.jpgBarkley is three shy of Matt Leinart's 99 career touchdown passes, which is the USC and Pac-12 record.  The senior quarterback is four scores from being the first ever conference quarterback to reach the century mark.

Woods is on the brink of becoming USC's all-time receptions king.  Just halfway through his junior season, he needs only five catches Saturday to top Dwayne Jarrett on the career list.

Barkley and Woods have been a record setting duo since day one at Troy.  The quarterback already holds top school marks for touchdown passes in a single season (39) and single game (6).

As an All-American in 2011, Woods caught more passes (111) than any player in Pac-12 and USC history.  He also set the school's single-game record with 17 catches versus Minnesota last year.

USC student-athletes have joined forces in serving the surrounding community. So far, the program has logged almost 1,000 hours of service.

On October 6, 100 student athletes volunteered for Marathon for Kids, held at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Marathon for Kids is a program that encourages healthy living for communities around the country. The children learn about healthy eating habits and work to complete 26.2 miles over the duration of a six-month period.

The USC Women's Basketball, Women's Lacrosse, and the Track and Field teams ran along with the children and cheered them on as they ran around the Coliseum. The athletes also signed autographs at the finish line.

Colorado Wednesday: Notes

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

The Trojans endured the warm weather Wednesday morning as they continued preparations for Colorado.

  • Wednesday's practice, like Tuesday's, proved to be physical and high intensity. The Trojans are trying to get back to their usual practice schedule as the bye week and Utah game switched up the Trojans' usual routine. "We are trying to get into a routine of having normal Saturday games for the next six weeks," Kiffin said. "it feels good to be on a normal schedule."
    Defense.jpg
  • After spending the bulk of the first half of the season on the road, the team is excited to play the next five of six games in Los Angeles. Senior safety T.J. McDonald believes that playing at home definitely gives the Trojans an advantage. "It's always good to play at home in front of your crowd," McDonald said. "We know that it will be electric out there and the energy will pick us up. If it is a later game, it is always good to have the motivation from our fans because they are the twelfth man on the field."
  • Kiffin praised true freshman defensive lineman Leonard Williams for his play thus far. "He is a big, physical and strong player that has only been here for two or three months and has made a huge impact," Kiffin said. "He played his best game last week and continues to improve."
  • Though USC enters the contest with Colorado as a heavy favorite, McDonald believes that the Buffs should not be overlooked. "They have some taller receivers and the running game is not too bad," McDonald said. "You can never underestimate any opponent. We look at all teams the same and try to improve each week."
  • With a formidable schedule ahead in the second half of the season, remaining focused will be the Trojans' biggest task. "We are creating good habits and making sure we are still paying attention," McDonald said. "For us, it's making sure we stay humble, stay hungry and keep trying to get better by improving all details of our game."
  • Here is Kiffin's post practice presser...

Barkley's Breakdown: Forcing Turnovers

The USC defense has already forced 16 turnovers this season, which is just one short of last year's total.  Of the 16 takeaways, 11 are interceptions led by LB Dion Bailey, whose four picks are more than any other linebacker in the country.

Bailey forced two turnovers against Washington, so he broke it down with Matt Barkley for the newest video on the PROJECT TRO7AN app.

Colorado Tuesday: Notes

The Trojans are back on their normal practice schedule with the bye and Thursday night game behind them.

  • The energy was noticeably different on the practice field this morning.  The coaches have raised the intensity and plays were being run at a much higher tempo.  "This week is all about us.  We had probably the most physical practice that we've had all season," said Lane Kiffin.
  • Woods-CO-Tues-McG.jpgSaturday could be a special day in the Coliseum as Matt Barkley and Robert Woods have the chance to break all-time records.  Barkley is four touchdowns shy of setting a new USC and Pac-12 career mark, while Woods is five catches away from becoming the all-time Trojans receptions leader.
  • Woods on the potential record: "It would mean a lot to me.  Growing up watching all the USC receivers, to be on the list with them at the top of it, it's an honor and a privilege.  Hopefully, I can do it on Saturday at home."
  • USC is not getting the offensive output that most anticipated going into the season.  The two big problems have been 3rd down efficiency and penalties, which sort of go hand-in-hand.  "I think a lot of the penalties have killed us on third downs," Barkley said.  "It's making sure that we don't put ourselves in [third and longs], so we can make the game easier on ourselves."
  • Freshman LT Max Tuerk is getting an extended look with the first team in place of Aundrey Walker, who leads USC in penalties, according to Kiffin.
  • The offense has been centered around the running game in recent weeks as a reaction to the double teams on Marqise Lee and Robert Woods.  The quarterback would still like to see the offense air it out more than 20 times.  "We better see some change.  I hope so," Barkley said.
  • Lee was held to a season low two receptions against Washington.  "It does not effect me as much as people think it does," said Lee about the low numbers.  "We still won.  If the run game is working, I say we run until they change their defense."
  • The sophomore was asked if he's having fun this season.  "I'm having a great time," Lee said with a big smile.
  • USC is one of only two teams in BCS conferences to play only two home games this season.  "We missed our fans," Woods said.  "It is fun and exciting to play at home, finally getting cheers instead of boos, but it's still football.  We've got to play our game."
  • Kiffin dropped the stat that Barkley has thrown the same amount of touchdown passes through six games this season as last season.  "Hopefully, we'll hit our stride like we did last year at this point," Kiffin said.
  • With all the media talk about individual numbers and stats, Barkley stated the overall objective clearly, "From now on, our goal is to win out the rest of the season."
  • Here is Lane Kiffin's entire post-practice media session...

2012 NFL Week 6

The Trojans in the league have suffered some tough injuries lately with Brian Cushing, Troy Polamalu, Nick Perry and Matt Cassel all going down.

Heisman Worthy

Carson Palmer, QB, Raiders - 23/33 for 353 yards and 1 TD/1 INT with a 102.2 passer rating

Palmer-Raiders-ATL.jpgThe 2002 Heisman Trophy winner has not had a lot of weapons to work with this season in Oakland.  However, he put a scare into the undefeated Falcons by passing for over 300 yards on the road.  After throwing a costly pick-six, Palmer came right back down to tie the game with a touchdown drive in the final minute.  The defense gave up a game-winning field goal with one second to play.

All-American Caliber

Pete Carroll, Head Coach, Seahawks - Huge comeback win over the Patriots to move to 4-2 on the season

Mark Sanchez, QB, Jets - Passed for 2 TDs and a 109 passer rating in a much needed victory

Joe McKnight, RB, Jets - 3 carries for 71 yards

Fred Davis, TE, Redskins - 3 receptions for 46 yards

Jordan Cameron, TE, Browns - 2 catches for 38 yards

Finally, our condolences to Everson Griffen, who lost his mother Wednesday, and came back to play Sunday for the Vikings.

The Game Plan

Brown-UW-McG.jpgLane Kiffin is not afraid to win ugly.  The head coach has a tried and true formula that works for every road game.  "The story of the day would be the defense number one, and then the special teams and then the run game.  Those are the three things if you are going to win on the road that you need to pack," Kiffin said.  Despite Matt Barkley (10/20 for 167 yards and 1 TD/1 INT) and the passing game not putting up big numbers, Kiffin is happy with the final score.  "We are here to win games.  We are not here for stats.  We are 5-1.  It's good enough for us."

All Grown Up

The 2010 defense took its lumps, but several key players on the 2012 squad learned valuable lessons that year.  Now, the veteran group is making opponents pay.  "It's just a more experienced defense than a couple of years ago," said senior S Jawanza Starling.  "We've been in the system for a while.  A lot of guys know what they're supposed to do and are just having fun and playing football."  The USC defense has forced multiple turnovers in every game this season, including four takeaways tonight.

Saved by Starling

The play of the night came courtesy of Jawanza Starling, who forced and then recovered a fumble inside the 5-yard line when Washington was about to make it a one possession game.  "It was a spark plug for this game," said Starling.  "It changed the whole momentum."  While Starling's starting spot has often been in jeopardy over the years, he has answered the challenge, including signature plays against Notre Dame and Oregon in 2011 and now Washington in 2012.

Absolute Beast

Anthony Brown gave himself an audacious nickname, but he lived up to it tonight.  The reserve defensive back not only blocked a punt, but scooped up the loose ball and took it in for six.  The second quarter touchdown was USC's last score of the night.  Brown is not normally in that spot on punt block team, but he earned Kiffin's praise in the post-game locker room as a player who was ready when called upon.

Sensational Silas

Redd-UW1-McG.jpgSilas Redd took the first offensive play 57 yards which teed up a big night on the ground.  The junior running back carried it 26 times for 155 yards and a TD.  "We felt pretty good," Redd said about the run game.  "That first half, the offensive line, they were lights out."  The Trojans cracked the 200-yard rushing barrier for the third time this season.

Midseason Report Card

USC sits at 5-1 at the midway point of the regular season.  The defense has been remarkably consistent, but the offense has lacked explosiveness recently and been hamstrung by penalties (10 more tonight).  "We have got a lot of areas to improve," said Starling.  "We've got to fix our penalties and play more disciplined.  The effort has been there...but just play smarter on the field."  In fairness, USC has played four road games already (by comparison Oregon has traveled once), but the Trojans finish with five of six games in Los Angeles.

Two-point conversion...

Robey's Island

Nickell Robey gave up a touchdown pass to Kasen Williams in the first quarter.  At halftime, he vowed to Lane Kiffin that Williams, who is the Huskies leading receiver, would not catch another ball.  Williams did not have a second half reception.

Third Option

With defenses keying on Robert Woods and Marqise Lee, the passing game needs to diversify.  Enter Xavier Grimble.  The tight end made two huge plays, an 18-yard TD grab and a 24-yard catch and run, starting in place of the injured Randall Telfer.

Here is Grimble after the game...

Hoops Training Camp Begins

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

The USC men's basketball team opened its first practice of the 2012-13 season on Friday. After a disappointing 6-26 record last season, the 2012 Trojans are ready to bounce back and have dubbed themselves the second chance team.

"We named ourselves the second chance team because of the fact that we have so many transfers," senior guard Jio Fontan said. "We have guys that have been overlooked recruiting wise and we look at this as an opportunity to make up for the things we let go in the past. We are looking to make a statement."
fontan.jpg
Fontan (Picture courtesy of Robert Hanashiro, USA TODAY) was sidelined during the 2011-12 season after tearing a ligament in his left knee during an exhibition tour in Brazil. Following the first practice of the season, Fontan said that he would be able to play a game immediately, if needed. With the departure of USC's leading scorer in 2011-12, Fontan is also ready to step into a leadership position for the Trojans.

The fast-paced practice, held at the Galen Center practice courts, also featured a five minute scrimmage with live officiating. "We got a lot of the nervousness out early with the high speed, high intensity practice," Fontan said. "Guys are still learning and we are throwing a lot of stuff at them quickly. It is going to be a growing process but I am definitely happy with how we practiced today."

Even head coach Kevin O'Neill was impressed with the Trojans' first day of practice. "We are a physical group and we have guys that play really hard," O'Neill said. "Now, we need to play smart, play together and without fouling. I like what we did today and it was a really good first day."

Here is O'Neill's post-practice presser...

Husky to Watch: Junior QB Keith Price

Keith+Price+Washington+v+USC+bx_ZajFDmRQl.jpgPrice finished his first year as a starter by accounting for seven touchdowns (four passing and three rushing) in the Alamo Bowl, which tied an NCAA record for total TDs in a bowl game.  He is explosive as a dual-threat, but the rest of the offense has not been able to keep up this season.  His QB rating is down from 161.9 in 2011 to 111.8 in 2012.  However, he and the Huskies are undefeated at home this year.

3 Keys

Hang the Laundry

In USC's three road games, the Trojans have racked up a combined 34 penalties with a peak of 14 flags at Utah last week.  The coaches constantly preach discipline, so it is on the players to clean it up.  USC was the least penalized team in the Pac-12 2011, and if the Trojans can return to that mindset, they will be hard to stop.

Finish Drives

USC was guilty of leaving points on the field against Cal and Utah mostly due to penalties, negative plays and missed field goals.  The Huskies have given up 67, 41 and 52 points in their last three losses.  The Trojans will hang a big number if they can avoid drive killers and then close the show with some big plays like the bomb to Marqise Lee last week.

The Pupils

Lane Kiffin vs. Steve Sarkisian in Pete Carroll's house!  That will be the media headline no matter what happens.  Kiffin and Sarkisian are friendly rivals with a similar pedigree, but the players will decide this game.  When coaches are this familiar with each other's game plan, the deciding factor is always execution.

USC got its first win over Sarkisian's Huskies in last year's 40-17 Coliseum blowout...

New Walkthrough Policy

Here is the latest from USC and the Pac-12 on stadium walkthroughs...

The Pac-12 this week instituted a policy that permits visiting football teams to conduct a 60-minute walkthrough at the game facility on the day prior to a contest.

USC's athletic administration had not allowed visiting teams to hold Friday walkthroughs at the Coliseum this year in order to maintain the best possible condition of the field for the players. In past years, the Coliseum grass did not hold up well and visiting team walkthroughs contributed to the problem by tearing up the turf the day before a game. New sod was installed in the Coliseum this season and turf specialists recommended keeping off the turf as much as possible prior to a game.

"We are happy to abide by the Pac-12's decision," said USC senior associate athletic director J.K. McKay, who is involved in USC's use of the Coliseum. "We will request that teams wear tennis shoes for their Coliseum walkthroughs, not football cleats, in order to minimize the damage to the turf."

USC does not do walkthroughs at the Coliseum or on the road at opponent stadiums.

Freshman Transition

As part of USC Athletics' Stevens Academic Center, the SAAS team hosts transition seminars for freshmen.  In the latest PHED 165 class, the freshmen learned how to cook healthy food on their own from USC dietician Kristy Morrell.

Student-athletes always have a busy schedule, so the idea is to maintain wellness even on the go.  The evening section made turkey tacos and protein cookies, while the breakfast club whipped up eggs, yogurt parfaits and cinnamon raisin french toast.

The Second Chance Kids

The USC men's basketball program has turned the page from the 6-26 campaign of a year ago.  And why not?  The roster has almost completely turned over.

Huddle-MBK-2012.jpgThe 2012-13 Trojans are made up almost entirely of transfers (10 of the 13 scholarship athletes), so the players have dubbed themselves "The Second Chance Kids."

"We actually talked about it," head coach Kevin O'Neill said.  "Including myself, it's a bunch of rejects...let's face it.  But these guys all have one thing in common, they want to win."

Talent was never an issue for this group of Trojans, but they never really fit in at their past university for one reason or another.  Now, they have matured as players and people, and found a home at Troy.

The undisputed leader of the bunch is senior PG Jio Fontan, who has recovered from knee surgery.  O'Neill's team is extremely deep, but the point guard would be hard to replace without another veteran ball handler on the roster.

Otherwise, USC has a surplus of athletic wings and super-sized big men.  As practice begins this week, competition for playing time will be fierce.

Here's a quick preview of the team with much more to come as camp begins...

False Alarm

The latest rumors around a possible USC football uniform change are unfounded.  Two athletic department staffers found some old Nike prototypes, which the Trojans decided not to wear last year, and posted a photo on Instagram.

USC has a longstanding uniform tradition, which includes being the only FBS school to never put names on the back of its jerseys, and the current administration has no intentions of making major modifications to the classic cardinal and gold.

Washington Thursday: Notes

The team was in good spirits today as they basically had an extended walk-thru in sneakers.

  • During individual drills, the coaches and managers sprayed the Trojans with sprinklers and hoses in preparation for the expected rain in Seattle.  The forecast calls for a 60% chance of showers.
  • Lane Kiffin announced that Torin Harris will start at cornerback Saturday opposite Nickell Robey.  "We think Torin is going to continue to improve," he said.
  • Kiffin does not anticipate a reunion with Pete Carroll or his staff this weekend.  The Seahawks host New England on Sunday, so Kiffin expects them to be busy preparing for Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.  "It's all business," Kiffin said.
  • With extra days to prepare for the last two games, Kiffin loves the way his team looks.  "I think our guys have really good legs right now.  Our guys look really fast.  It feels like we've had a full bye."
  • Here is Kiffin's full Thursday presser including some compliments for his UW counterpart Steve Sarkisian...

Unleashed

All-American safety T.J. McDonald has shown up in the box score lately.  The senior was moved closer to the line of scrimmage after the first two games of the season to take advantage of his length and strength, while covering up depth issues in the front seven.

As a result, McDonald is leading the team in tackles (38).  He has nine tackles in each of his last three games after averaging 5.5 in the first two.

Last year, he averaged 5.8 tackles per game, which is trumped by his 7.6 tackles per contest so far in 2012.  He also made a game-changing interception undercutting an underneath route against Cal.

Going into the season, the Trojans had a glut of safeties with six experienced and talented players.  With McDonald moving around, Monte Kiffin has often deployed three safeties on the field at the same time, which could increase to four with Josh Shaw at corner.

In the bigger picture, McDonald's increased presence around the ball has helped the defense improve from No. 54 in 2011 to No. 30 in 2012.

Washington Wednesday: Notes

The electronic crowd noise on Howard Jones Field this morning was loud enough to wake up the entire campus.

  • Just like last week, the Trojans will go through two "Thursday" practices thanks to the extra day of preparation for Washington.
  • Shaw-Wash-Tues-McG.jpgDB Josh Shaw (pictured) is the defensive story of the week.  He is moving from safety to cornerback.  "I'm getting back into the swing of things," Shaw said.  "Any way to help contribute to this team, I'm all for it."
  • The challenge with corner is "you're out there on the island," said Shaw.  He embraces the competition that creates, especially in practice with guys like Robert Woods and George Farmer, who Shaw has been battling since they were kids.
  • "The island" has exposed CB Torin Harris at times this season, but DB coach Marvin Sanders is not worried about the junior's confidence.  "You have to have that belief that you are better than the guy across from you," he said.  "Torin is a very confident person. I promise you, you'll start seeing the little things that he's improving on."
  • Marvin Sanders jokingly encouraged the media to convince Kiffin to let Marqise Lee play both ways.  He would relish the opportunity to coach the uber-talent, but he'd be surprised if he ever gets the chance.  "If coach wants to offer him up, I will take him," Sanders said.  "It's not happening, but he is one of the best conditioned athletes you will see anywhere."
  • On the defensive line, Leonard Williams started over Antwaun Woods at defensive tackle last week based on performance.  The true freshman is second on the team with 6 tackles for loss and 4 sacks.
  • When J.R. Tavai returns to health, he could take snaps at both defensive end and defensive tackle.  With the emergence of Morgan Breslin at end, depth is not as big of an issue there as during fall camp.
  • Andre Heidari had not missed a kick this season until Utah when he missed three (one was saved by a penalty).  "Andre had a really bad Thursday," Kiffin said his kicker's struggles were mental.  "Andre did not handle it very well.  He was kinda yelling at the fans...got really upset...showed some emotion on the sidelines."
  • Heidari explained that he had a mechanical issue with his plant foot, but he did let the crowd get in his head.  "I just got distracted.  I wasn't really in the right mindset for the game."
  • Zach Banner, who is redshirting this season, will make the trip this week to his home state.  USC can travel 70 players, and with the scholarship losses, there are extra spots for walk-ons or redshirts.  "The good thing about the sanctions is that Zach gets to go on a trip home," Kiffin said with a smile.
  • Lane Kiffin was asked about calling plays as the head coach today and told an interesting story about a conversation he had with Pete Carroll upon taking the Raiders job.  "He said the worst thing I could do was give that up because the players feel that from you and the relationships it creates.  That's kind of always sat in the back of my head when I thought about it."
  • Here's the rest from Lane Kiffin...

Washington Tuesday: Notes

The Trojans prepare for their fourth road game in their last five contests.

  • Lane Kiffin has been happy with the last three weeks of practices.  The Trojans blocked a lot of field goals (Tony Burnett pictured) during special teams.
  • Robert Woods was in good spirits again today talking about getting knocked out at Utah.  He has passed concussion tests every day since the incident.
  • Burnett-Wash-Tues-McG.jpgWoods version of the events: "I don't know what happened to the other guy.  I just got jacked up, so let me get up and make him not feel good like he didn't daze me.  The whole time I was kind of like gone.  Once I hit the ground the second time, I was like now I'm good."
  • Lane Kiffin and John Baxter made a small change at holder with QB Cody Kessler replacing Matt Barkley.  More than anything, it gives Kessler an opportunity to stay engaged in the game despite being a third stringer.  "It's kind of cool just having responsibility now," Kessler said.  "I have to stay ready at all times."
  • Kessler is developing a rapport with PK Andre Heidari.  Despite what you may have seen in "Ace Ventura" though, he was told never to spin the football.  "He wants it tilted a little bit," Kessler said.  "It's cool working with Andre both being from Bakersfield."
  • Senior OG/C Abe Markowitz is enjoying his first extended run of playing time.  "I'm happy to be healthy," he said. "I'm happy not to be on 'Muscle Beach' with those other studs."  ("Muscle Beach" is the rehab area at practice.)
  • Markowitz is a valuable member of the offensive line because of his versatility.  He stayed long after practice working on snapping with QB coach Clay Helton.  "You've got to be perfect in both," he said.  "Center is obviously harder to master than guard, so you've got to put in extra work."
  • The offensive line struggled at times with the loud atmosphere in Utah.  The unit improved as the game progressed, and they will need another strong effort at a raucous CenturyLink Stadium Saturday.  "Communication is hard.  After a few hiccups, we figured it out.  We had our verbal and visual cues to one and other and got things done."
  • As for the 14 penalties as a whole, Lane Kiffin is focused on reinforcing his message of discipline.  "Really continue to do what we've been doing: stress it, post it, focus on it, crowd noise.  The same stuff we did last year.  It will turn around."
  • Lane Kiffin answered lots of questions about the upcoming contest with Washington in his daily scrum.  Listen in...

Rankings Refresher

USC moved up to No. 9 in the Coaches' Poll, No. 10 in the Harris Poll and No. 11 in the AP Poll after its comeback win over Utah and a slew of losses by ranked teams this weekend.

Morgan-Lee-TD-UT-McG.jpgIt has been awhile since the Trojans ranking mattered in the grand BCS scheme of things.  Remember, while the AP declares its own national champion, the poll is NOT factored into the BCS Standings, which debut after the eighth week of the season.

The BCS formula includes the Coaches' Poll (1/3rd), Harris Poll (1/3rd) and six different computer rankings (1/3rd). The computers are the wild card, so the best and worst rankings are dropped for each team, and the others are averaged.

What do the computers think of USC?

As an example, the Sagarin ratings place the Trojans at No. 10, which is similar to the polls.  However, it spots Arizona State at No. 9, and the Sun Devils are not even ranked in either poll.

Who should you be rooting against?

Despite the loss, USC sits in a pretty solid position.  Unless the SEC puts two teams in the BCS Championship Game again, surprise Big 12 contenders West Virginia and Kansas State are the two biggest threats outside of Oregon and Notre Dame, which are on the Trojans schedule.

Most importantly, USC needs to keep winning as the margin of error closed in Palo Alto.  If the Trojans can escape Seattle unscathed, five of the remaining six games are in Los Angeles.

Washington Sunday: Notes

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

Following the victory over Utah, the Trojans have begun preparations in anticipation for their upcoming duel with Washington.

  • According to Kiffin, having the extra days has been an advantage as the Trojans are ahead in their practice schedule. Kiffin called Sunday's practice "spirited."
  • Kiffin said on Friday that safety Josh Shaw might move to cornerback. Kiffin reaffirmed the possible switch today. "He has experience with it and did want to do it a little while ago," Kiffin said. "It's not that hard of a move to put him back there."
  • As Kiffin stated, Washington's loss to Oregon does not indicate that the Huskies are not a strong program. "They are a completely different team when they play at home," Kiffin said. "I believe they are 3-0 at home, so they play really well there."
  • In regards to the possibility of wide receiver Marqise Lee playing both ways, the pros and cons are still being decided. "We don't want it to take away from what he does on offense. He is one of the best players in the country," Kiffin said. "It would be pretty hard to put him over there very much if it were going to take reps away on offense."
  • Here is Kiffin's post-practice presser...

Video: Soccer Going North

USC women's soccer has a bizarrely unbalanced Pac-12 schedule.  The Women of Troy are in the midst of a five-game conference road stretch before concluding the regular season with five consecutive home matches.

After two marathons in the desert, the Trojans need to find their legs fast with games at Oregon State (today at 1 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Network) and Oregon (Sunday at 1 p.m. PT).

Here's a preview...

Necessary Roughness

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

Halfway through the 2012 season, the Women of Troy are primed to take on their remaining opponents after playing in two wild overtime games in Arizona. Under the leadership of senior forward Samantha Johnson, the program is on the rise.

Sam-Johnson-McG.jpgJohnson is known for her aggressive style of play and her feistiness fuels the Trojans offense. "It works to my advantage when I am playing smart," Johnson said. "When I don't play emotional, it works for me and with emotion, it works against me."

Her competitive edge got the best of her in last week's duel against Arizona State as Johnson received a red card, forcing USC to play down two players (Autumn Altamirano was forced to the sideline after incurring two yellow cards).

"I fouled the girl on purpose to slow the play down and so she wasn't really happy about that because the game had been really scrappy," Johnson said. "We both let our emotions get the best of us and I was given a red card. I was upset because I felt like I let my team down."

Johnson leads the Trojans with four goals this season - two of which were game-winners (versus San Diego and in OT against Washington). During her career at USC, Johnson has scored 14 goals. As a junior, she made school history as she scored a goal 14 seconds into the match against Washington State.

Worst Case Scenario

Thumbnail image for Holmes-Mea-Culpa-UT-McG.jpg"I felt really calm," Lane Kiffin described his emotions after watching his team fall behind 14-0 within three minutes of kickoff.  It's hard to imagine a worse start to a game than the Trojans feeding the Utes a pair of touchdowns in an already raucous atmosphere, but the team followed its head coach and remained placid, yet resilient.  "I think it just shows the character of the guys on our team and the willingness to fight," said captain Matt Barkley.  The 38-7 run that followed could end up being a turning point in the season.  "I do feel like they are coming together as a team," Kiffin said.

A Real Man

Senior captain Khaled Holmes called the team together in the post-game locker room.  He apologized to his teammates for the two early miscues that put the Trojans in a hole.  He also thanked them for having his back and vowed that it would never happen again.  "I think we have a heckuva man in our locker room that plays center for us," said Kiffin about Holmes.  Despite the disastrous start, Holmes was a huge factor in the comeback as he led an offensive line that allowed zero sacks for the second straight game and quieted Utah DT Star Lotulelei.

Barkley's Best

The quarterback called the game his most satisfying of the season.  He was rocked early on by having the ball ripped out of his hands for a Utah touchdown, but Matt Barkley showed exceptional composure and poise to rally the troops.  He finished the night 23/30 for 303 yards and 3 TDs/0 INT.  Plus, the 83-yard touchdown pass to Marqise Lee was the longest of his career.

The Knockout Punch

Barkley's majestic rainbow to Lee all but put an end to the competition.  "I thought it was a great set-up," Barkley said about the play.  "Our running game had been doing really well."  With the threat of run, USC was finally able to loosen a defense over the top and seal the deal.  Lee finished the game with 12 catches for 192 yards.

Real Deal Robey

Robey-Pick6-UT-McG.jpgUtah challenged Nickell Robey tonight, and the Trojans best corner responded with 7 tackles, a forced fumble and a pick-six.  The interception was delivered to Robey on a plate courtesy of DE Morgan Breslin who blew the play up with his relentless pass rush.  "Everything is starting with the defensive line," said Robey.  "They are getting a lot of pressure on the quarterback.  They are making it easier for the guys on the back end."

Wobbly Woods

Robert Woods delivered a huge block on a punt return, but he also knocked himself silly on the play.  The wide receiver staggered to his feet, tried to run and then fell flat on his stomach.  The incident was scary at the time, but Woods shook it off quickly.  He answered all the concussion quiz questions correctly on the sideline and then jumped right back into the action.  "He's so competitive that I don't think you can slow him down in situations like that," said Kiffin about Woods, who finished with six catches for 69 yards and a TD.

Two-point conversion...

Flag Unhappy

The offense hit its best rhythm of the season during the final three quarters, but penalties kept the Trojans from putting up a monster number.  "Obviously, the penalties were completely disappointing.  14... That's ridiculous.  That's not who we want to be," Kiffin said.

Next Man Up

D.J. Morgan was a savior tonight.  Just like at Stanford, USC lost its top two running backs to injury, but this time Morgan was available to step up in his first game back from knee surgery.  "D.J. Morgan did really well.  I thought he ran hard," said Kiffin.  He carried it nine times for 46 yards (5.1 yards per rush).  Here is Morgan after the game...

Ute to Watch: Senior DT Star Lotulelei

Lotulelei-UT.jpgThe 2011 Morris Trophy winner (best defensive lineman in the Pac-12) is pushing for an All-American nod in 2012.  He is also expected to go in the first round of the NFL Draft in April, so the Trojans have their hands full with the 6'4" 320-pound interior force.  "The problem is he was a great player last year and now he's better," said Lane Kiffin about Lotulelei.

3 Keys

Party Crashers

Utah is expecting a raucous, sellout crowd in one of the great showcase games in the school's history.  Lane Kiffin has a simple formula for defusing a hostile road atmosphere: protect the ball, pack the run game and defense.  The Trojans struggled with the first two parts of that plan in Palo Alto, but to bounce back like they did in 2011, they need to check all three boxes.

A Strong Spine

The center of the offensive and defensive lines will be tested.  As mentioned above, Star Lotulelei will line up over USC's center and guards in the hopes of disrupting the Trojans offense just like Stanford.  With or without Khaled Holmes, USC will have to hold strong so the playmakers can go to work on the outside.  Utah does not have a high-octane offense, so expect a lot of power run to kill clock and set-up play action.

Style Points

The world will be watching.  USC is on center stage Thursday night on ESPN.  The national media mostly wrote the Trojans off after the early season loss, but a big time performance could get the pundits talking.  College football is a beauty contest.  If USC wants back in the race, it is time to start making some statements.

USC defeated Utah in the first ever Pac-12 game in 2011 thanks to a blocked field goal by Matt Kalil.

Building Blocks

USC baseball head coach Frank Cruz inherited a rebuilding project when he took over at Troy in 2011.  Recruiting is the key to lifting the program back to its championship heights, and the newest class (ranked No. 24 by Collegiate Baseball) should provide an influx of talent.

Click here for the complete rundown on the class of 2012.

"I think this year we were able to get quality recruits late to replace some of the guys that signed after getting drafted," said Cruz. "We are really excited about that. We got a great group of guys that are proven winners and have been champions at different levels."

Left-hander Kyle Twomey (pictured) is the headliner.  The southpaw was drafted in the 3rd round this summer by the Oakland A's, but decided to hold off on the pros for a college experience.

USC junior DE Morgan Breslin does not do interviews.  The junior college transfer politely turns down all requests and prefers to let his play do the talking.

However, he is an interesting character as Gary Klein details in this profile with quotes from everybody but Breslin.

On the field, Breslin has been a revelation.  He is second in the conference in sacks (5.5) and tackles for loss (9.5).

Utah Tuesday: Notes

The Trojans leave for Salt Lake City tomorrow afternoon.

  • Again under extreme heat, USC went through basically a half speed practice for most of the morning session.  The coaches have spent the last two days drilling in the game plan and schemes for Utah.
  • The bye week has been good for healing players.  "We are in the best physical shape that we've been in all year long," said Lane Kiffin.
  • Kiffin is fond of the coaching axiom that road teams must "pack their defense and their run game."  To that end, he is hoping for a healthy Khaled Holmes.  With the center in the lineup, the Trojans ran for 250+ yards against Syracuse and Cal, but only 26 in the loss to Stanford without him.
  • OG John Martinez will be making a homecoming to Utah this week.  Just like the players from the New York area earlier this season, Kiffin wants him to treat it like a business trip.  "We really downplay it.  We just talk to him about doing his job," Kiffin said.
  • The final words from Kiffin on his team: "I think they are in a good place.  We need to play well.  [Utah] will come out extremely physical and excited and throw everything at us."
  • Here are the rest of his words as the Trojans finish up the preparations for Utah...

Obviously, the numbers are not dynamic, but if you watched Sunday Night Football, Havili was a major factor in Philadelphia's game plan.  Always praised as a selfless leader at USC, Havili continues to set a physical tone as LeSean McCoy's lead blocker.  And as the Giants ramped up the pass pressure, Havili served as an outlet receiver and surprise running threat.

Utah Monday: Notes

A light "Thursday" practice under extreme heat...

  • USC will have two "Thursday" practices this week, which means a lot of scout team preparation and game plan execution.
  • Robey-FallCamp16-McG.jpgThe defense has had a strong week coming off its best performance of the season against Cal.  Lane Kiffin is happy with his front seven and safeties, but he wants to see his second and third corners improve.  "There's no secret.  We have not played well there.  We're working on it."
  • Young players tend to stand out during bye weeks, and freshman CB Kevon Seymour has opened Kiffin's eyes.  "It's needed.  We need some snaps out of him at corner challenging Torin Harris.  He's going to be a really good player here."
  • Nickell Robey continues his outstanding play at the other corner spot.  "They just don't throw at him," said Kiffin about Robey (pictured by John McGillen).  "If they don't give you the opportunity, it's hard to get numbers."
  • All-American S T.J. McDonald has expanded his role this season by playing defensive end in obvious pass rush situations. "[His skillset] is unique," said Kiffin.  "We did some similar things with Eric Berry [at Tennessee].  It really kinda came from watching T.J. blocking kicks and how well he rushed."
  • McDonald likes attacking offensive tackles.  "I bring a little more speed off the edge.  You get to be one-on-one with a slower guy and make a move, get some pressure on the quarterback," McDonald said.
  • The safety has been working with defensive line coach Ed Orgeron on his pass rush technique, which will only make him a more versatile player at the next level.  "I wanted to add different elements to my game," he said.  "Whatever it is that I am asked to do, I just want to do it at a high level."
  • Here is a long media session with the head coach...
