Friday Night Video: Hawaii

On the night before a game, the entire team gathers in a meeting room inside a hotel for final thoughts from head coach Lane Kiffin.  He delivers the message that he wants the men to think about as they go to sleep tonight and wake again for game day tomorrow.

After Kiffin's speech, the team watches a video to deliver one last moment of inspiration.

Here is this week's Friday Night Video with a little help from some USC legends...

The Duke transfer will get his first college snaps in front of friends and family as the Orange County product returns home.  Schroeder was a highly-rated prospect out of Dana Hills HS, but never saw the field in Durham.  Head coach Norm Chow declared Schroeder the opening day starter on day three of training camp.

Find Out

Head coach Lane Kiffin said you never know about a player until you see him in a game.  The second line of the depth chart will feature a lot of debuts Saturday, so if the starters can provide an early cushion, the coaches can start getting to know the likes of QB Max Wittek, WR Nelson Agholor, DT Christian Heyward, LB Scott Starr and the rest of the reserves.

Sack Dinner

The defensive line is the biggest question mark entering the season.  After losing Nick Perry to the NFL and Devon Kennard to injury, only Wes Horton (4 sacks in 2011) returns as a proven pass rusher from the front four.  Hawaii has always been known as a pass happy program, and Norm Chow loves to put the ball in the air, so Horton, J.R. Tavai and the rest of the defensive linemen will get plenty of chances to attack the backfield.

The First Step

As the Lao Tzu proverb goes, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."  The Trojans want their journey to end in Miami, which is about 2,700 miles away.  The first step is knocking off Hawaii in front of a sold out Coliseum.  Let the games begin...

In a new feature this year, we will have an outside member of the media provide three more keys to the game each week.  Our week one guest is Pedro Moura of ESPNLA.com...

Let's Talk Logistics

So, there is a football game tomorrow.  Here is what you need to know if you are holding USC vs. Hawaii tickets...

Coli-DayBefore.JPGTrojan Ticket Transfer

If you cannot use your tickets, transfer them for free to a friend, so we can pack the Coliseum.

Parking

There are two lots available on game days for fans without USC Donor parking passes. Exposition Lot 1 is located at the corner of Martin Luther King Blvd. and Vermont Avenue and is $25 per space. There is also a garage located at Browning and Vermont Ave, one block north of Martin Luther King Blvd which is $30 per space. Both of these lots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. All other parking lots surrounding the Coliseum in Exposition Park are reserved for our Trojan Athletic Fund Members. Public parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis in all USC campus parking garages.

Expo Line

Skip the traffic and parking hassles and Go Metro on game day. Expo Line trains will run approximately every six minutes before and after games. Fans can also take Metro's Silver Line to the 37th St/USC Station, just a short walk from the stadium.

Connectivity

We have been working hard with Verizon and AT&T (other vendors to follow) to improve cellular service in time for Saturday's game. While we've made significant progress with improved connectivity, these service providers will continue to work on, test and fine-tune their systems. So, while certain fans will see improved connectivity for the Hawaii game, we will experience additional improvements as we move toward the Cal game on September 22. We want to thank you for your patience with us as we move this very important project forward and we all look forward to much improved connectivity as the season progresses.

Hawaii Thursday: Notes

The Trojans finished their final real practice before the season opener.

  • Lane Kiffin was much happier today with his team's focus and sharpness.  The mental errors from Wednesday's practice were rectified today.
  • Barkley-Kiffin-HawTH-McG.jpgThe head coach was asked for the umpteenth time about dealing with all the hype surrounding this team.  "My number one job, especially with the hype around this season and this team, is to make sure that they are ready to play."
  • One staple of the Kiffin philosophy is energy conservation before games.  This coaching staff takes pride in having the slowest pregame warmups.  He expects that Saturday's sold out season opener could lure the players into a frenzy, so the coaches will guard against lost energy.
  • (Photo of Matt Barkley and Kiffin by John McGillen)
  • LB Simione Vehikite has returned to the team after serving a jail sentence and fulfilling the requirements necessary to regain his spot on the roster.  "Simi is back with our team," Kiffin said.  "He has been through a lot.  While he was not with us, he had a great semester last spring, passed 20 units and is very close to graduating."
  • Norm Chow spoke glowingly about USC during an interview on the "Mason and Ireland Show" on ESPN Radio yesterday.  "USC is very admirable in their commitment to athletics and their commitment to that university both athletically and academically," said Chow in comparison to UCLA.
  • Chow and his wife still live in Manhattan Beach in the offseason.  He had two sons graduate from USC.
  • Former Tennessee AD Mike Hamilton attended practice today.  He was Kiffin's athletic director during his tenure in Knoxville.
  • USC will have a walk-thru on Friday, which is closed to the media, so here are your final thoughts from Kiffin before kickoff.

Steve Johnson has taken a pair of bites out of the Big Apple this week.  The two-time NCAA singles champion pocketed his first grand slam singles win by defeating Rajeev Ram in straight sets at the U.S. Open a day after he and fellow American Jack Sock knocked off the No. 1 seeded men's doubles team.

Johnson-Sock-Doubles.jpgIn his second U.S. Open, Johnson learned from his first mistake.  Last year, he let a two sets to love lead slip away in five, but the full-time pro took care of business (6-3, 7-6, 6-3) in a much more efficient manner this afternoon.

He will play Ernests Gulbis in the second round on Friday (weather permitting).

The four-time NCAA team champion was boosted by last night's upset of No. 1 Daniel Nestor and Max Mirnyi.  Johnson and Sock (pictured) dropped the first set 6-1 before shocking the veteran duo 7-6 and 6-2 in the final two sets.

Johnson is not the only Trojan enjoying life in the big city this week.  Former USC women's tennis star Maria Sanchez teamed up with Irina Falconi for a first round doubles victory.

Another men's tennis champion, Robert Farah, has yet to take the court with his doubles partner Juan Sebastian Cabal.

Trojan Safety Net

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

Just three days separate the USC Trojans from the 2012 season opener against Hawaii in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Trojans, finally free from its two-year bowl ban, will embark on the conquest to Miami in 2013.

Though great focus has been on the influential younger players of the roster, one Trojan has been through it all. Redshirt senior safety Drew McAllister has four years under his belt and is looking to make an impact in his last season.
McAllister-Haw-Tues-McG.jpg
During his career at USC, McAllister has been plagued with hip and hamstring injuries. However, McAllister believes his experiences have helped him improve throughout his career thus making him a stronger player within the defensive unit. "I'm going to be ready no matter what for whatever they ask me to do or whatever defenses they ask me to come in on," McAllister said. "We have a lot of older safeties now that bring a lot of experience. We have worked along with the corners in staying together as a defense."

With the Trojans currently ranked No.1, the hype is nothing new to McAllister. He is the only current player on the USC roster that was on the top-ranked USC team during the 2008 season. The Trojans fell from the AP top-ranking after a loss to Oregon State during week five of the season.

"Last season, we had a long year as we lost a couple of games. Then, guys started to come along and we came together as a team throughout the season," McAllister said. "We just have to remember where we came from in the past couple of years and working hard to get to this point."

The six foot one safety hails from Danville, Calif., and grew up attending Cal games as both his parents attended the university. His father, Ken, lettered as a defensive back for the Golden Bears in 1976 and 1977, leading the team in punt returns during both seasons and kick-off returns in 1976. "He has definitely helped me a lot,"  McAllister said. "Having someone in the family that knows football like that definitely helps."

Hawaii Wednesday: Notes

The calendar says Wednesday, but Lane Kiffin called this the first of two Thursday practices.

  • A Thursday practice is always light on contact and heavy on scout team.  The head coach is glad to have time for two Thursdays this week.  "A lot of mistakes today," Kiffin said.  "We expect it to be a lot cleaner tomorrow."
  • Eddie-George-SWAG2.jpg1995 Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George was at practice today sporting a Trojan shirt.  He is part of the Fox Network team calling the game Saturday alongside Gus Johnson and Erin Andrews.
  • Kiffin will once again battle his mentor Norm Chow this week.  Since leaving USC, the two have faced off in the NFL, and at Chow's stops at UCLA, Utah and now Hawaii.  "Somehow, we just keep following him around," joked Kiffin.  He also praised Chow as "one of the greatest minds to ever coach college football."
  • Given the scholarship reductions, walk-on LB Will Andrew, who received a one-year scholarship last year, was not able to receive one again this season.  "We look at it as a positive," said Kiffin.  "We don't see it as ever taking one away.  He was fortunate to have one for a year.  That's a lot of money off his parents."
  • Kiffin made an interesting observation about the importance of winning with style in Los Angeles, which is known for star-studded sports teams. "L.A. isn't a town that's real fired up about winning games 14-10.  There is a showtime element to it."
  • Senior CB Brian Baucham is excited just to be part of the show again.  He is back at practice after sitting out fall camp waiting to hear about his eligibility.  "I am happy to be out here with my team and playing with my boys," said a smiling Baucham.  "At the end of the day, I thank USC.  They told me that they are going to push me and help me get my degree."
  • Baucham could play an important role in the secondary, which is lacking depth at cornerback.  "I feel like I have an opportunity to make an impact just based on the team chemistry," he said.
  • Baucham is the latest member of the defensive back group to effusively praise new secondary coach Marvin Sanders.
  • Sophomore PK Andre Heidari lost 45 lbs. since last year.  He dropped from 240 down to 195.  "Losing the weight really helped me swing up a lot more and get through the ball more at contact and improve my hang time and put a little more distance on my ball," he explained.
  • Heidari will play a key role in special teams coach John Baxter's strategy for kickoffs.  With the kickoff line moved up five yards, Heidari can consistently deliver the ball to the back of the end zone, but a touchback comes out to the 25 now.
  • "If we can pin opponents inside the 25-yard line, it will be harder for them to score," Heidari talked about using high lofting kicks.  "We also can kick it out of the back of the end zone to avoid returns."
  • Here is the rest of Kiffin's media scrum...

Hawaii Tuesday: Notes

The practice schedule shifts to the early morning from here on out...

  • Max Wittek was named the backup quarterback today by Lane Kiffin.  Wittek and fellow redshirt freshman Cody Kessler have battled for two years, and the competition remains open to replace Matt Barkley in 2013.
  • Wittek-Hawaii-Tues-McG.jpg"I am excited about the opportunity obviously," said Wittek, who was told by Kiffin this morning.  "I have to stay ready every game...stay ready every play.  I have to take advantage of my opportunities when they come."
  • Wittek (pictured by John McGillen) lost out to Kessler last year to be Barkley's No. 2, but he has improved his command of the huddle and overall confidence.  "Compete everyday," Wittek said about his focus this past year.  "Regardless of what number on the depth chart you are, we all make each other better."
  • In typical Kiffin fashion, he told Wittek that walk-on John Manoogian was going to be the backup before breaking the news to Wittek that he won the job.
  • Kiffin on the backup QB battle: "We feel very confident about both guys.  Really there isn't much difference between them.  This will have nothing to do with who is the starter next season."
  • If the scoreboard situation allows it, Kiffin hopes to play both Wittek and Kessler in games this year.  Neither have taken a college snap before.
  • As for practice today, "I thought they were a little bit sluggish getting used to the 6 a.m. format," said Kiffin.
  • CB Brian Baucham practiced for the first time today, so he was flying around the field and landed a pair of big hits despite the no-contact rules.
  • TE Xavier Grimble, who struggled during camp with drops, broke loose down the seam for a touchdown pass from Barkley.
  • The offensive line is starting to gel under the leadership of senior captain Khaled Holmes.  "I am really confident where we are right now," he said.  "I think we are going to have a good day on Saturday."
  • Holmes spoke at Salute to Troy about how much it meant to wear the C on his jersey.  "It means the world to me.  It's honestly the biggest honor in my life."
  • Here is the massive media scrum around Kiffin as game week brings out the crowd...

Football Style Guide

The USC football uniform will undergo some minor changes this year with the introduction of new Nike lightweight technology and cardinal and gold cleats.

The home and road jerseys are almost identical to the old ones, but the Nike Combat material is lighter and tighter.  The new material almost has a Teflon effect as water repels off the jersey and the fabric does not retain sweat like the previous version.

The Trojans will also be carrying around fewer ounces thanks to titanium buckles on their pants.  The pants are again the same style, while the sock color remains a game time decision.

The cleats are the same model as the previous season, but the Nike footwear (pictured below) will be cardinal and gold in 2012.

Go Metro

USC fans have a new cheap and easy way to get to the Coliseum this year by taking the Expo Line on the Metro Rail.  The train stops at Expo/Vermont and Expo Park/USC Station, which are both a short walk from the stadium.

By taking the train, fans bypass the hassles and cost of traffic and parking.  Click here to plan your route.

Interestingly, this is not the first time trains were available for transport to USC games.  The previous passenger rail service was de-electrified in 1953, but as you can see from this photo, it dropped off right in front of Mudd Hall, which looks exactly the same 60 years later.

New Fan Code of Conduct

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

The Los Angeles Sports Council, in addition to representatives from local sports venues, teams and law enforcement, have created the Southern California Fan Code of Conduct. The new code comprises of 10 rules that all fans must abide by when attending all events.

USC Athletic Director Pat Haden served as a member on the Task Force for the L.A. Sports Council. The Task Force aims to enhance the fan experience for all fans, especially families. "Attending a sporting event often creates memories of a lifetime," Haden said. "I know that is true for those who come to Trojan games at the Coliseum, Galen Center and our other USC facilities."

Haden has been influential in improving the fan experience at the Coliseum and the Galen Center and was enthusiastic in improving safety and enjoyment at other venues in Los Angeles. "To have all the venues throughout our region come together and create the Southern California Fan Code of Conduct reinforces the commitment all of us have to provide spectators with memorable and enjoyable experiences," Haden said. "It also reinforced the zero tolerance policy we have at USC regarding disruptive fan behavior."

Preseason Depth Chart

Lane Kiffin released his initial depth chart of the 2012 football season.

There were not many surprises.  Curtis McNeal and Silas Redd are listed as co-starters at running back, which is also true of Jawanza Starling and Demetrius Wright at strong safety, Kyle Negrete and Kris Albarado at punter and Xavier Grimble and Randall Telfer at tight end.

Hawaii Sunday: Notes

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

The Trojans began preparations for its season opener against Hawaii on Saturday, Sept. 1.

  • A new media policy was announced following today's practice. The media will no longer be able to report on injuries, strategy and practice participation. Kiffin believes that reporting on injuries gives opponents a competitive advantage.
    Curtis McNeal practice photo.jpg
  • Following Sunday's post-practice presser, Kiffin announced that the back-up quarterback will be probably be named following Tuesday's practice. There has been no indication on whether the back-up spot with be Kessler or Wittek. Kiffin has said in previous statements that he would feel comfortable putting either of the two in the game, if needed.
  • Walk-on punter Kyle Negrete earned a scholarship. During the 2011 season, Negrete appeared in 11 games and averaged 40.1 yards on his 39 punts. He was awarded the 2011 Joe Collins Walk-on Award and is currently a Burlsworth Trophy candidate.
  • With Hawaii on the horizon, the Trojans are prepping for the Warriors physicality. "They are a very aggressive bunch and they always play with heart no matter what happens," TB Curtis McNeal said. "We're ready for them but we just have to match their energy and play Trojan football."
  • Before the start of fall camp, the depth at running back was one of the biggest concerns. After a successful fall camp, McNeal feels that by having fellow tailback Silas Redd, the USC running back corps has been greatly enhanced. "We feel more comfortable in the backfield and we test each other to see if we know our stuff so if one of us comes out, there's no stopping our offense," McNeal said. "Silas played at Penn State and he brings a lot of experience to our backfield."
  • Since the conclusion of the 2011 season, McNeal has worked on getting stronger in preparation for his new role within the USC offense. "I got a little bit stronger in the off-season and I am capable of more now," McNeal said. "I don't know how many times my number will be called but I am going to be ready regardless of what it is."
  • The team will have tomorrow off for the first day of school. Starting on Tuesday, USC will practice at 8 a.m. for the rest of the season.
  • Here is Kiffin's post-practice presser...

Fall Camp Finale: Notes

The Trojans went through a mock game on Howard Jones Field to wrap up Fall Camp 2012...

  • The 2012 USC football captains: QB Matt Barkley, OL Khaled Holmes, S T.J. McDonald and CB Nickell Robey.  Barkley is the first three-time captain in the history of the program.
  • FallCampFinale-JMC-McG.jpgThe coaches did their best to make today's scrimmage a dress rehearsal for next week.  The team stayed in the downtown hotel, bussed to campus and got dressed in full uniform.  The scout team even mimicked Hawaii by running out with the Warriors' flag and performing a pregame "Haka" led by TE Junior Pomee.
  • Pomee also led the scout team on the field.  He was a dominant presence for the opposition featuring mostly walk-ons and third team scholarship players.
  • The Trojans had the better of it on the day by a large margin.  All three quarterbacks sparkled.  Matt Barkley (8/12 for 140 yards and 2 TDs and 1 INT) looked game ready, while backups Max Wittek (5/7 for 101 yards and 1 TD) and Cody Kessler (12/15 for 129 yards and 2 TDs) are more than capable understudies.
  • Curtis McNeal starred for the running back unit breaking off a 65-yard touchdown run, while Silas Redd hauled in a catch for six.
  • The starting receivers, Marqise Lee (6 catches for 96 yards and a TD) and Robert Woods (4 catches for 116 yards and a TD), present the ultimate pick your poison scenario.  Freshman WR Nelson Agholor also broke free deep for a 42-yard TD bomb from Kessler.
  • The defense shined by forcing more turnovers in the secondary.  Redshirt freshman CB Ryan Henderson picked off Barkley's first throw of the day and then CB Anthony Brown answered with an interception on the next play.  LB Hayes Pullard also had an 80-yard pick-six.
  • With Torin Harris sidelined and Brian Baucham missing all of fall camp, walk-on CB Ryan Dillard and true freshman Kevon Seymour are currently the third and fourth corners up.  Dillard had an interception in the scrimmage.
  • The 2 hour and 30 minute scrimmage marked the official end to fall camp.  "It's time to go," Lane Kiffin told the team.  "This is real ball now."
  • While Pomee was the surprise star of the scrimmage, Kiffin called the physically gifted tight end "extremely inconsistent."  He has had issues learning the playbook and lining up in the right spots.
  • Matt Barkley gets the last word.  A week out from his senior season, the Heisman frontrunner is ready to go.  "It's about time.  Since December...I've been waiting for this day to come."
  • Here is Lane Kiffin's final presser of fall camp...

Fall Camp #19: Notes

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

Fall Camp is nearly over and the Trojans have begun preparations for the season opener in eight days.

  • USC did not wear pads in today's practice. Practice was also much shorter and focused on drills with the first team and the scout team.
  • Kiffin announced today that LB Marquis Simmons and CB Brian Baucham are both eligible. CB Isiah Wiley was ruled ineligible. Wiley started the second half of the 2011 season. While appearing in 10 games, Wiley had 39 tackles and a fumble recovery.
    Offensive line.jpg
  • DE Wes Horton, CB Torin Harris and TE Randall Telfer did not practice today.
  • Throughout Fall Camp, the offensive line has had to deal with injuries, forcing Max Tuerk and Nathan Guertler to step up. OL John Martinez stated that the offensive line will be ready for Hawaii even though newer faces have been in the mix. "The freshman came in, like Max [Tuerk] and Zach [Banner], and I can already tell that these are really smart guys," Martinez said. "They've caught on to the little things and what to do in certain situations. We're on a good foot right now."
  • Earlier in Fall Camp, Kiffin said that OL Kevin Graf will remain on the right side rather than filling in at left tackle. Graf prepared to play on either the left or the right side. Graf's ability to play either side is a huge advantage to the USC offensive line and may be needed later in the season. "You just have to be prepared for both, which I was," Graf said. "I worked both left and right and I was ready for whatever side that they put me on."
  • The Trojans will see a familiar face on the Hawaii sideline on Sept. 1-Norm Chow, USC's former offensive coordinator (2001-2004). "We honestly haven't talked about Coach Chow," Graf said. "I know him pretty well as he coached my brother [Derek Graf] when he was here. Now we are starting to watch film on Hawaii and focusing on their defense."
  • Tonight the Trojans will travel to a hotel and treat tomorrow's practice as a mock game.
  • Here is Kiffin's post-practice presser...

Long Live the Spaceman

USC baseball alum Bill "Spaceman" Lee is still defying time and convention at the age of 65.

The lefthander started a game for the San Rafael Pacifics of the independent North American League.  The idea was nothing more than a publicity stunt for the minor league team to showcase a local legend, who was famous for his pitching and notorious for his antics.

As it turned out, the craziest thing Lee did on the night was twirl a complete game victory.  Already the oldest pitcher to win a professional baseball game, he broke his own record in style and left every baseball fan with mouth agape.

"Honestly, this is one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen," Pacifics manager Mike Marshall, the former Dodgers outfielder/first baseman, told the San Jose Mercury News. "I can't believe what I just saw -- I'm like Jack Buck."

Using a repertoire of junk balls and slow heat, he gave up four runs on eight hits in nine unforgettable innings.

Meet Gerald Bowman

Bowman-FallScrimmage-McG.jpgName - Gerald Bowman

Position - Safety

Class - Junior

Size - 6'1", 215 lbs.

Age - 22

Junior College - Pierce JC (Woodland Hills)

Comparison - USC's recent safeties have been long and strong like T.J. McDonald, Taylor Mays and Darnell Bing.  Bowman is much more stocky in the physical mold of Kevin Ellison.

Prep Career - Bowman went to high school in Philadelphia, where he played running back and safety.  He blossomed last year as the No. 1 junior college player in the country as ranked by Rivals.com.

Fall Camp - He has the reputation as an excellent tackler, but the lack of physicality at USC practice has kept him from showing off.  However, he did make a highlight play to force an interception in the second Coliseum scrimmage.

To Quote Bowman - "Every day I have to pinch myself.  This is really happening.  I'm out here competing with the best guys and the people that have been here before me were the best of the best."

Fall Camp #18: Notes

The coaches pushed the team with a long, physical practice.

  • "[This is] really the last practice of our camp as far as having pads on and being physical," Lane Kiffin said.  "We needed to do this without scrimmaging this weekend."
  • Saturday's "scrimmage" is more of a mental mock game.  The team will get a dress rehearsal in terms of the procedure of a home game from the hotel to dressing to warmups and pregame routine.
  • In that same vein, practice broke into scout team for the first time today.  The coaches want the scout team ready for next week to accurately simulate Hawaii.
  • Lee-FallCamp18-McG.jpgMarqise Lee made another jaw-dropping catch, which even caused an audible reaction from the media in attendance.  He dove for a long pass, hauled it in on his fingertips, performed a somersault and popped right back up.  (Photo by John McGillen)
  • Kiffin on getting Lee touches: "If you're going to make the statement that he may go down as the best receiver ever, you better make sure you put the ball in his hands."
  • The starting defense for the Hawaii opener is beginning to take shape.  CB Torin Harris and LB Lamar Dawson have been injured for most of camp and continue to rehab.  In their stead, CB Anthony Brown and LB Hayes Pullard have stepped up.
  • Kiffin on Pullard's transition to middle linebacker:  "Extremely confident.  I can't imagine a guy could have done better than he did.  It may be his spot at the next level."
  • Brown started for Harris last year and played well before breaking his ankle in the game against Cal.  "It just made me work two times harder in the offseason," Brown said.  "I did not miss a day of [rehab].  It's just a mindset.  You have to go get it."
  • If Brown starts opposite Nickell Robey, the pair will have to make up in toughness what they lack in height.  "I'm a little bit taller than Nickell," said Brown, who is an inch taller than the 5'7" Robey.  "He's a dominant corner.  I look up to Nickell as a leader."
  • Kiffin expects the team to be hyped up by the sellout crowds this season.  He sees it as another step to returning Troy to what it should be.  "It's our job to put the product on the field to get the fans to come," he said.
  • Here is Kiffin's post-practice presser...

Ancient Greek Maxim

As USC student-athletes march up the tunnel leading out of the John McKay Center, before they reach the Trojan Sword, they pass under an arch bearing an ancient Greek inscription.  When translated, the inscription reads, "Sound Mind in a Sound Body."

The famous maxim is pulled from a quote by the philosopher Aristotle, "Education is the process of creating sound mind in a sound body."

Whether it is athletics or education, to achieve the desired result, one must put in the proper preparation as a foundation for success.

Banner-Camp9-McG.jpgName - Zach Banner

Position - Offensive Tackle

Class - Freshman

Size - 6'9", 335 lbs.

Age - 18

High School - Lakes HS (Tacoma, WA)

Comparison - Has USC ever had an offensive lineman this massive?  Banner fills out 6'9" comfortably.  Based on measurements, he is built like future NFL Hall of Famer and UCLA alum Jonathan Ogden.  He is taller than his dad, former NFL Pro Bowler Lincoln Kennedy, by three inches.

Prep Career - The two-sport star led his high school basketball team to a state title, while also becoming a finalist for the 2012 Watkins Award, given to the nation's top African-American high school scholar-athlete.

Fall Camp - Banner is playing right tackle, but sits under Kevin Graf and walk-on Nathan Guertler on the depth chart. He is a potential redshirt candidate as he continues to polish his technique.

To Quote Banner - "I trust [Coach Kiffin] with the rest of my college career.  I trust him with the rest of my freshman season.  You've got to trust the people that you put around you.  I trust everything he does."

Fall Camp #17: Notes

The Trojans breezed through a quick practice without pads today.

  • Lane Kiffin has been pleased by the sharpness of his team's play this week.  "They are going the right direction," he said.  "For the most part, things are going well."
  • Kiffin is happy with the way the "second-tier guys" have stepped up and learned the playbook.  As examples, he mentioned WR Nelson Agholor, RB D.J. Morgan, RB Silas Redd and LT Max Tuerk.
  • Nikias-Football-Speech-McG.JPGThe football team met with USC President Max Nikias today.  He used the ancient military metaphor of the shield and the phalanx to explain to the men that they need to protect their teammates.
  • Nikias also expressed his thanks to the senior class, "The university will always be grateful to you for sticking through some tough times."
  • Under 10 days until kickoff, the team is ready to hit someone else, but the coaches are thankful to have more time to prepare the younger players.  "You have some guys that could go play today and some guys that aren't close," Kiffin said.  "You just try to change things up."
  • WR George Farmer was a big story at the start of fall camp as a hamstring issue sidelined his bid for more playing time.  The now healthy wideout is working his way back into the mix.  "The thing I need to work on is staying consistent throughout practice," Farmer said.
  • Farmer made the play of the day hauling in a bomb from Max Wittek.  He might have the fastest straight line speed of all the receivers.
  • Despite his high profile background, Farmer is focused on doing the little things to earn playing time.  "If they need me to make that big block to get them in the end zone, I'll do it.  If they need me to make a catch, I'll do it.  Even if it is to be a decoy, I'll do it."
  • In his introductory interview, which we will post Thursday, Zach Banner mentioned that his high school coach moved him to the left side because he was blocking his quarterbacks field of vision.  He is playing right tackle as of now at USC.
  • QB Cody Kessler on Banner's height being an issue: "No.  He is a big dude at almost 6'10", but our protection schemes have him out of the way even on a quick three-step drop."
  • The Trojans are back at it Thursday and Friday afternoon before a lighter scrimmage on Saturday.  Hawaii week officially begins on Sunday.

Meet Leonard Williams

Williams-TeamPhoto-McG.JPGName - Leonard Williams

Position - Defensive Tackle

Class - Freshman

Size - 6'5", 280 lbs.

Age - 18

High School - Mainland HS (Daytona Beach, FL)

Comparison - Physically, Ed Orgeron has used his name in the same sentence with Shaun Cody, another defensive end converted into a defensive tackle at USC.  Coach O was quick to qualify his statement saying that Cody had an all-time great motor, so Williams has a ways to go.

Prep Career - He had 103 tackles, including 19.5 for losses with 10.5 sacks, as an All-American senior in 2011.

Fall Camp - Coach O wants to incorporate eight defensive linemen in his rotation and Williams appears to have secured a spot as a backup defensive tackle.  He came in as a defensive end, but seems to have adjusted quickly to his new position in the three-technique.

To Quote Williams - "I am getting bigger and I still have room to grow."

The John McKay Center had its official unveiling today.  USC's new $70 million, 110,000-square-foot athletic and academic facility is a powerful symbol of the rich Trojan history and the path blazed for future greatness at Troy.

Ribbon-Cutting-JMC.JPGThe exterior design, described as "collegiate Romanesque," fits in with the rest of campus, while the interior is modern and edgy filled with glass windows that provide a bright, open air feel.

The building houses meeting rooms, coaches' offices and a locker room for the football program, as well as the Stevens Academic Center (including space for tutoring, counseling, study and computer rooms for student-athletes), a weight room, an athletic training room and a state-of-the-art digital media production facility for all of USC's 21 sports.

The centerpiece of the McKay Center is the two-story video board in the Parker Hughes atrium, which can display six big screen televisions at once as well as promotional videos and graphics.

Fall Camp #16: Notes

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

The USC offense continued to impress for the second day in a row after a lackluster scrimmage on Sunday.

  • The Trojan offense was similar to yesterday's practice. Kiffin was pleased with the energy in all three phases of the game especially with the "dynamic guys showing up on offense," he said.
    McDonald-FallCamp16.jpg
  • The timing between QB Matt Barkley and WR Robert Woods is back on track to what it was last season. QB Max Wittek also completed a 70 yard pass to WR Marqise Lee.
  • OT Kevin Graf returned to practice today after missing a few days. Graf was out because of an unspecified injury.
  • Just over a week before the season opener, the back-up quarterback has not been selected. Kiffin stated previously last week that the back-up would be selected before the season started. "We're not in the season yet so we have not named one," Kiffin said. "I consider the season to really be that first week of practice. I think both of them have a really good grasp of our offense and I can see some areas where both of them can play."
  • Safety Drew McAllister is hoping to make an impact within the USC defense this season. "We like finding roles for everybody and Drew is obviously part of that, whether that is on special teams, defense or both," Kiffin said. "He's been here a long time and it will be great for him to have a good season." In his career, McAllister has 54 tackles and 3 interceptions.
  • ESPN Analyst Kirk Herbstreit selected WR Marqise Lee as the top receiver in the country in his 12th annual Herbie Awards. "For someone to say that, I appreciate it but I have big shoes to fill because I actually have to show them what I can do and prove the statement correct," Lee said. "Therefore, I will continue to work hard and do what I do in practice and hopefully it shows up in the game."
  • Lee felt that the poor scrimmage performance boosted the morale of the receiving corps in both Monday's and Tuesday's practices. "Truthfully, I feel we didn't do as well as we were supposed to in the scrimmage. We had a meeting with the receivers because we feel like that was one of the main problems of the scrimmage," Lee said. "We came out here yesterday, talked to each other, picked it up and made sure we went full speed."
  • Here is Kiffin...

Meet Max Tuerk

Tuerk-Graf-Camp10-McG.jpgName - Max Tuerk

Position - Offensive Line

Class - Freshman

Size - 6'6", 275 lbs.

Age - 18

High School - Santa Margarita HS

Comparison - Lane Kiffin commented that Tuerk is unique to the program given his body, skills and versatility.  He could play any of the five positions by the time his career at Troy comes to an end.

Prep Career - The All-American led Santa Margarita to the CIF Pac-5 and CIF Division I state titles in 2011.

Fall Camp - Tuerk has been one of the stories of fall camp as he continues to push Aundrey Walker at left tackle.  True freshman do not often make an impact on the line, but Tuerk will likely backup at multiple positions and should see the field this season.

To Quote Tuerk - "Every practice is like a high school game.  It is a huge adjustment."

The Heritage Initiative

USC Athletics announced the launch of a $300 million fundraising campaign, "The Heritage Initiative," in an effort to provide the best athletic and academic facilities for the nation's best collegiate athletes.  The ambitious goal will support capital projects, annual scholarships for student-athletes, academic support and programming costs, endowments, and recruitment and retention of coaches and staff.

Haden-Nikias-JMC-PC.jpgClick here for the full release.

"We have an athletic heritage unmatched by most universities and we look forward to building upon that heritage," said USC Charles Griffin Cale Director of Athletics' Chair Pat Haden, a former Trojan quarterback and Rhodes Scholar.  "Along with our great fans and supporters, we are extremely proud of the achievements of our Trojan student-athletes.  They win national championships and Olympic gold medals at an unparalleled rate while excelling in academics and volunteering in the local community.  And they are coached by some of the best coaches in the world."

USC Athletics is already halfway to achieving the lofty $300 million mark.  The next faze includes the 125th anniversary season in 2013-14 as well as capital projects like the Uytengsu Aquatics Center, the Heritage Hall renovation and the Merle Norman Stadium for sand volleyball.

"The opening of the John McKay Center is an especially appropriate time to announce our 'Heritage Initiative,'" said Haden.  "We are going from 30 years behind the times in our facilities to moving 30 years ahead of our competitors."

Meet Nelson Agholor

Agholor-FallScrimmage-McG.jpgName - Nelson Agholor

Position - Wide Receiver

Class - Freshman

Size - 6'1", 193 lbs.

Age - 19

High School - Berkeley Prep (Tampa, FL)

Comparison - He is long and fluid in the physical mold of Damian Williams.  Agholor talked glowingly about learning from Robert Woods and Marqise Lee, but he is a different type of receiver than both of them.

Prep Career - He played mostly running back, which is hard to imagine given his frame, but he ran for 1,983 yards and 28 TDs on 212 carries as a senior.  He caught only 10 passes last year.

Fall Camp - Agholor flashed from the very first day, but he has hit the proverbial freshman wall recently.  He bounced back with a solid performance in the live portion of the fall scrimmage.  The freshman will compete for playing time from the outset.

To Quote Agholor - "I am here to help these guys out.  It would be wonderful to have a season like [Woods and Lee], but I am Nelson Agholor, and I am here to compete and help the Trojans do well this season."

Fall Camp #15: Notes

After an ugly scrimmage, the USC offense came out firing on Monday...

  • Lane Kiffin was pleased with the response of his team particularly on offense.  "I think the offense was humbled a little bit," the head coach said of the scrimmage.
  • After looking at the film, Kiffin has decided to keep the position battle information to himself.  "I want to keep the competition going here and not really play it out in the media," he said.
  • S Jawanza Starling is happy with what he put on tape as he continues to try to hold off Demetrius Wright.  The senior was excellent down the stretch last season, but he is still forced to compete.  "Every day you have to come in and prepare to work hard for your spot," Starling said.  "This is USC...nothing is given to you."
  • Telfer-Camp15-McG.jpgThe offensive skill positions do not have a lot of competition at the top of the depth chart, so Kiffin is worried about complacency.  "We try to challenge our guys not to be the best at their position group but to be the best in the country," Kiffin said.
  • Kiffin was candid in his criticism of all three quarterbacks, which of course includes Matt Barkley.  "I never got in a rhythm," said Barkley.  "It was a weird day."
  • Barkley and the rest of the position leaders challenged the younger players to raise the level of their game and preparation.  "You've got to kind of grow up now," he said about his inexperienced teammates.  "It's time to make plays.  It's time to know your stuff or else you're going to hold us back."
  • The two star receivers were not immune either, and Kiffin singled out "No. 2 and No. 9" as responding with an all-out effort today.  Robert Woods made another spectacular touchdown catch in the back corner of the end zone.
  • All three QBs were efficient in practice, but Cody Kessler stood out with two accurate TD passes in tight windows to TE Xavier Grimble and WR De'Von Flournoy.
  • DL J.R. Tavai, who returned to practice after an injury stint, made the defensive play of the day by knocking a ball down in coverage of a tight end.  While Tavai is undersized for a defensive lineman, he makes up for it with a high motor and plus athleticism.
  • Also on the defensive line, Kiffin pointed out that DE Morgan Breslin played well in the scrimmage after a rough week of practice.
  • The media was introduced to freshmen WR Nelson Agholor and OL Max Tuerk.  We will post those interviews Tuesday.
  • Here is Lane Kiffin's complete post-practice presser...

State of Troy: August 2012

With the new school year beginning in a week, we checked in with Athletic Director Pat Haden on the big news of the new year.

McKay-Final.JPGWhat does the opening of the John McKay Center symbolize for this athletic department?

The John McKay Center, which opens its doors officially August 21, is transformational.  The real message is twofold.  First and foremost, academics count.  The Stevens Academic Center is the entire first floor, 20,000 square feet, which sends a signal that no longer is academics in the basement with no light shed upon it.  Secondly, this is not just a football building.  We are celebrating our female athletes, our Olympic heritage and all 21 of our sports.

What has you fired up about the start of the football season?

We have a chance for a great season and our fans need to be a part of it.  When they fill the Coliseum, it gives us a competitive advantage.  Our kids feel their energy and it fuels the recruiting effort for the next generation of Trojans.  We hope everyone comes to the opener on September 1 against Hawaii, or if you cannot make it, please use Trojan Ticket Transfer, so somebody else can fill your seat.  And then on September 8, we have an opportunity to show the coast-to-coast power of the Trojan Family.  We want all our Northeast alumni to fill up MetLife Stadium and help us beat Syracuse.

we play to nguyen.jpgWhat do you think of the new WE PLAY marketing campaign?

The WE PLAY  campaign is unique in that we are promoting all 21 of our sports under the same brand.  We have generally done a good job marketing football, but we have athletes throughout our sports that are worthy of being promoted across the city and country as evidenced by our tremendous success at the London Olympics with 25 medals.  The WE PLAY campaign is clever, vibrant and dynamic and a leader in innovation, which is where we want to be as an athletic department.

Click here to see the first WE PLAY commercial.

What were your goals for the USCTrojans.com redesign?

In the athletic department, we have some very creative people who have grown up with and embrace new technology.  I have asked them to push the envelope to promote our 21 sports, which includes redesigning our website.  The new USCTrojans.com showcases big, bright photos and stories as well as the #USCNOW section, which provides up-to-the-second updates on all of our social media platforms.

Click here to see the new USCTrojans.com.

What does it mean to the athletic department to have Pac-12 Networks officially launched?

This is a huge opportunity for us as a conference and certainly for us at USC.  Finally, all our student-athletes can feel like their sport is significant.  Fans can use any kind of device to watch any kind of sport.  We already have great distribution to 48 million people, but we want everyone to get the networks, so please let your satellite or television provider know that you want Pac-12 Networks.

6-Points: 2012 Fall Scrimmage

The 83-play scrimmage served as the closest thing to a dress rehearsal before the September 1 opener versus Hawaii at the Coliseum.

Click here for the complete scrimmage recap and stats.

  • Dominant Defense - The defense forced five turnovers (four interceptions) and stopped the offense on downs twice in an impressive performance against one of the nation's best offenses.  While the offense had the better of it all week, the D responded on the live stage Sunday.  "The higher the turnover ratio, the better the team," said senior captain T.J. McDonald, who had a pick.  "Execution is something that is going to fuel emotion."  McDonald and Lane Kiffin singled out Gerald Bowman as a standout in the secondary.
  • Flournoy-FallScrimmage-McG.jpgSluggish Offense - On the other side, the first team offense never got in sync.  Many of the star players sat out the first half, which featured live tackling, and then came out in the second half and looked out of sorts.  Matt Barkley (8/19 for 119 yards) led just one touchdown drive (25-yard pass to FB Soma Vainuku) and threw two interceptions.  "We didn't play very well at any of our [offensive] position groups," Kiffin said.  "You saw Matt make some decisions that he usually doesn't make and I think that was a product of being frustrated."
  • Scrimmage Starr - Freshman LB Scott Starr was one of the MVPs of the game.  He grabbed two interceptions, while leading the defensive effort from his middle linebacker position.  Starr arrived a semester early and the added knowledge is paying dividends.  "I feel like a different player from the spring," Starr said.  "Now, it is starting to slow down for me."
  • Conservative Kessler - While Max Wittek (6/16 for 104 yards) threw two interceptions, Cody Kessler kept a clean sheet, while leading two of the game's three touchdown drives.  However, he was hardly perfect going 3/8 for just 29 yards and a TD pass.  His best play came on a 17-yard scramble.  "It was kind of a busted play, but I saw no one there, so I thought I might as well take off," said Kessler.  Kiffin said he is no closer to naming a backup quarterback.
  • Position Battles - Kiffin wants some time to watch the tape before he assesses the situation at strong safety between Demetrius Wright and Jawanza Starling and left tackle between Aundrey Walker and Max Tuerk.  Walker did have a false start which has been an issue at times during camp.
  • Lee Apologizes - The offensive frustration came to a head when Marqise Lee pushed Ryan Dillard in the facemask after the whistle.  Lee was then benched for the rest of the game.  The walk-on cornerback had kept Lee from a sure touchdown by committing a pass interference penalty and Lee boiled over.  He took it upon himself to apologize to the entire team and coaching staff after practice.

Extra point...

  • More notable stats: RB Silas Redd (9 carries for 59 yards and a fumble); RB D.J. Morgan (7 carries for 31 yards and a TD); WR Robert Woods (4 catches for 67 yards); WR Nelson Agholor (3 catches for 33 yards); WR Victor Blackwell (3 catches for 39 yards and a TD); LB Jabari Ruffin (4 tackles); DT George Uko (INT) and CB Kevon Seymour (forced fumble).

Fall Camp #14: Notes

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

The Trojans began final preparations before tomorrow's scrimmage at the Coliseum.

  • Only two weeks remain until the 2012 season opener and it was announced today that USC is ranked number one in the AP Poll. Coaches and players are pleased with the top-ranking and cite that it is great for USC fans and the university itself, especially after the two-year bowl ban.
    george farmer.jpg
  • Head Coach Lane Kiffin believes the rankings are a positive thing for the university but it does not mean anything for the USC football program. "It doesn't mean a whole lot to us because it will always be about the way we practice," Kiffin said. "That will help us win games this year. However, I do think it's great for our fans and our university after everything we have been through."
  • QB Matt Barkley was quick to add that the team should remain focused and not become too caught up in the preseason hype. "If you focus on where we are in the rankings, you get complacent, which is something we definitely do not want. We need to have a mindset like last year," Barkley said.
  • This season the USC offense intends to play two tight ends frequently. With that being said, the Trojans will need to rely on a third TE that will be a well-suited fit for the offensive scheme. Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick has had quite an influence already and has impressed Coach Kiffin with his play thus far.
  • USC will hold its second scrimmage of Fall Camp in the Coliseum tomorrow. The scrimmage will be beneficial to the Trojan roster in putting them in a game-like scenario.
  • Kiffin mention three particular things that he is looking for in tomorrow's scrimmage: defensive line play, defensive tackling and how the younger players have progressed since the last scrimmage and throughout camp.
  • As the defensive line has struggled with depth issues throughout Fall Camp, the scrimmage will be a good indicator in how they have adapted and how a younger defensive line will be able to step up in crucial situations.
  • Both RBs Curtis McNeal and Silas Redd had notable performances in Saturday's practice. It has not been said on how many reps either will take in the scrimmage.
  • Here is Kiffin...

Preseason AP No. 1

USC football sits atop the preseason AP Top 25 for the first time since 2007.  The Trojans received 25 of a possible 60 first place votes in the initial poll to slot ahead of Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma and Oregon.

The last time USC was tops in the AP Poll during the season was September of 2008 before the Thursday night loss at Oregon State.

Click here for the full story.

The AP Poll is no longer factored into the BCS rankings formula.  The Trojans are preseason No. 3 in the Coaches' Poll.

Woman Down, Man Up

USC women's soccer had lost its last three season openers and appeared to be headed to a similar fate when defender Kristina Noriega was sent off with a red card tied at 1-1 in the 77th minute.  Instead, the Women of Troy, buoyed by a lineup with seven new starters, found a burst of energy to reel off three goals in a 12 minute span en route to a 3-2 road win over Cal State Fullerton.

Click here for the game recap.

As a result, the Trojans are undefeated on the 2012-13 athletics' calendar with the first home test coming next Friday at McAlister Field against St. Mary's (3 p.m.).

Fall Camp #13: Notes

The intensity of practice rose to a new level today...

  • The coaches set the tone of intensity early during the session and the team responded with one of the best practices of fall camp, especially offensively.
  • Uko-dripping-Camp12-McG.jpgDuring special teams drills, John Baxter had his guys firing off the edge trying to block field goals.  CB Ryan Henderson made a great play to knock one down and pick it up for a return.
  • At the end of practice, Andre Heidari had to make a 45-yard field goal and the team would get to sleep late.  He drilled it...but then RB Curtis McNeal went double or nothing.  Heidari needed to make from 50 and tonight's meetings would be cancelled.  Heidari missed left.
  • Lane Kiffin joking about McNeal's gamble: "I said to Curtis, 'That's why you have no money.'"
  • In all seriousness, the coaching staff tries to find ways to put pressure on the special teams since all the focus of camp tends to be on offense and defense.
  • The final play of practice was a beauty as Cody Kessler rolled to his right and hit freshman WR Nelson Agholor in stride for a deep touchdown pass.  Kiffin said that Agholor has "hit the wall," which is typical of freshman at this stage of camp, but he still "flashes."
  • TE Randall Telfer also caught a long touchdown pass.  It seems like he has been open a lot during camp.  "I needed a lot more work at my pass catching game, so that's why it seems like I've been open a lot," Telfer said his coaches put him in for the best plays.
  • Telfer made 26 catches as a freshman.  How many can he have in this offense with Robert Woods, Marqise Lee, etc.?  "I honestly couldn't tell you.  It could be 50.  It could be 10."
  • More importantly, Telfer is looking to fill the leadership void left by Rhett Ellison, who had an all-time work ethic.  "We titled him the 'machine,' and the more I can be a machine and lead by example, the better our team will be."
  • The tight end group is deep with freshmen Junior Pomee and Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick behind Telfer and Xavier Grimble.  Pomee is "growing into his body," said Telfer, and he expects him to be a factor as a blocker, while Cope-Fitzpatrick is "excelling" at a faster rate than most freshmen.
  • Aundrey Walker actually had a shoulder injury not a wrist problem during his stay on the sideline.  He is back now and ready to test it Sunday at the scrimmage.  "We just have to really push him," Kiffin said about his left tackle.  "He's got to have a great two weeks here and get ready to play."
  • RT Kevin Graf did not practice today.  Walk-on Nathan Guertler stepped in with the first team at right tackle.
  • Former DB Tony Burnett also worked in with the first team at linebacker with all the injuries to starters.
  • Jawanza Starling and Demetrius Wright will take equal reps at strong safety in Sunday's scrimmage as the competition continues.
  • Here is Kiffin...

A lighter practice without pads, but still some great photos by John McGillen including a cool pass breakup sequence at the end of the gallery.

Fall Camp #12: Notes

The Trojans remained on Dedeaux Field as Howard Jones is getting completely resodded.

  • Good news on the injury front: LT Aundrey Walker and LB Hayes Pullard returned to practice.
  • The Trojans were not in pads today, so the practice resembled more of a high speed walk-thru, so the coaches could focus on situational plays.
  • Walker-Camp12-McG.jpgWalker (pictured by John McGillen) slotted back in with the first team at left tackle, but given the less than physical nature of the practice, Kiffin was unable to assess his effectiveness.  He is happy with his mental preparation.
  • Nickell Robey said that he will be handling punt returns this season, while Robert Woods and Marqise Lee will take kickoff return duties.
  • After yesterday's display by Woods and Lee, Robey was asked who is the tougher cover.  He called Lee more of an athletic challenge, while Woods is the greater "technician."  Given Robey's smaller stature, he admitted Lee's leaping ability makes him tougher to handle.
  • Robey saw that Lee did a front flip after making a catch on him yesterday, so he plans to retaliate with a back flip after his next interception.  And we all know Robey can do a back flip...
  • The secondary was a unit without a full-time coach last year, so the addition of Marvin Sanders is expected to pay dividends.  "Coach Sanders is a great guy," Robey said.  "He has a lot of swagger.  He loves his corners to get up in the face of [receivers].  Ultimately, he will teach us the game and teach us to play smart."
  • The corner spot opposite Robey has been a revolving door the last two seasons.  Isiah Wiley appeared to lock it down the second half of last year, but he has not practiced this fall to handle academic issues.
  • Lane Kiffin has faith in Torin Harris when healthy.  "Torin arguably was playing as well or better than Nickell at [the time he got hurt last year]. He is longer than Nickell and has an NFL type body and skills."
  • With Pullard and Dion Bailey back in the lineup, only Lamar Dawson is missing from the starting trio, so Pullard continues to learn both Mike and Will linebacker positions.  "I feel real comfortable at [middle linebacker]," said Pullard, who played that spot in high school.
  • If Pullard has to start at the Mike spot, redshirt freshman Anthony Sarao will step into his vacated Will position.
  • The head coach is also looking forward to seeing S Gerald Bowman in full pads and live contact.  The No. 1 junior college player in the country is still a mystery to the coaching staff.  "We know so little about him on the field," said Kiffin, who wants to see him tackle.
  • Here are all of Coach Kiffin's comments...

Barbara Hedges, the first ever senior women's administrator at USC, is back working at Heritage Hall as a development consultant.  Hedges is expected to play a key role in the "Heritage Initiative" fundraising campaign, which will be unveiled next Tuesday.

Hedges was credited with pioneering the USC women's athletics program during her 18-year tenure as a Trojan administrator.  From Troy, she went on to be the athletic director at the University of Washington from 1991 to 2004.

She was inducted into the USC Athletic Hall of Fame this past spring.

Still on Dedeaux Field...

  • Reserve DE DeVante Wilson is out for the season after tearing the ACL in his knee.  He missed last season rehabbing from surgery to the other knee, which he damaged the summer before arriving at Troy.  He was injured during a non-live drill yesterday.
  • As for today's practice, the Trojans have hit the dog days of camp, according to Lane Kiffin.  The offense had the better of it again, but the defense was boosted by the return of LB Dion Bailey.  Linebackers Hayes Pullard and Lamar Dawson are still out however.
  • Woods-OneHand-Camp11-McG.jpgRobert Woods provided the play of the day...maybe the play of camp to this point.  He made a ridiculous one-handed catch between two defenders on a Max Wittek deep ball.  John McGillen captured the moment.
  • Woods is looking more like himself these days.  "He had a couple of those today.  Marqise [Lee] and Robert had some...highlight reel catches, so it was good to have them out here on the same day," Kiffin said.
  • Otherwise, Soma Vainuku continues to have a great fall camp.  The fullback showed off breakaway speed during one long run.
  • Freshman Max Tuerk is a real option to start the opener at left tackle.  Kiffin praised his ability, especially "in the run game," and mentioned that the offense could protect him as he develops.
  • To keep from getting overconfident with all the preseason hype, Kiffin has cited the examples of the 2011 Philadelphia Eagles and Oklahoma Sooners to the team.  The Eagles "Dream Team" and Oklahoma's preseason No. 1 ranking were spoiled quickly.
  • The head coach is still split on backup quarterbacks Max Wittek and Cody Kessler.  He has done nothing but praise both of them.
  • While Kessler is working on improving the physical side of his game, Wittek has been told to "get your swagger."  "It just has to be in you," Wittek said about being a confident leader.
  • Kessler has often been compared to Mark Sanchez.  He wears his No. 6 and shares a common moxie and charisma.  Wittek is more in the vein of Carson Palmer, a quarterback blessed with incredible arm talent, but a quiet public persona.  "I have always watched [Palmer] and I feel like the comparisons between our body type are pretty accurate," Wittek said. "I've never met him to say that our personalities are similar, but I'd like to meet him."
  • Wittek packs a serious fastball, but he feels his greatest progression has come on touch throws and accuracy.
  • Here is Lane Kiffin on today's practice...

Fall Camp #10: Notes

Practice moved out to Dedeaux Field (baseball) to give the grass a break on Howard Jones and Brian Kennedy Fields.

  • CB Nickell Robey and WR Marqise Lee returned to practice, but wore yellow no-contact jerseys.
  • There were three fumbles in practice today including Silas Redd and George Farmer coughing up the pigskin.
  • The majority of practice was spent in a no-tackling scrimmage, which provided an opportunity for the offense to shine after the defense had dominated most of camp.  "We gave up some explosive plays over our head on defense," Lane Kiffin called it a positive and a negative.
  • Morgan-Camp10-McG.jpgGreat photo by John McGillen of D.J. Morgan getting behind the defense on a wheel route, but despite the effort, the ball came loose when it hit the ground.
  • We don't write much about Matt Barkley's play in practice since you all know what he can do in games.  However, it is worth mentioning from time to time how sharp he has become.  He hit De'Von Flournoy in a tight window for one of the deep touchdown throws to which Kiffin referred.
  • Barkley also lofted a perfect swing pass to Silas Redd who took it in for a score.  "It has been great playing for a quarterback that is [that polished]," Redd said.  "I have not played a real game with them yet, but I've gotten a sense of how talented Matt is and the receivers are."
  • Despite a fumble, Redd really shined today by picking up blocks effectively and working as a receiver out of the backfield.  He has had a smile painted on his face for his two weeks at USC.  "Life's pretty much good right now," said Redd.  He thanked Curtis McNeal for being a "big brother" and welcoming him to the Trojan Family.
  • Kiffin screamed Max Tuerk's name in praise after one play today.  The freshman left tackle has been impressive in Aundrey Walker's stead.  "He's really committed to learning the mental aspect of the game," said senior center Khaled Holmes.  "He's got some work to do with his technique, but in terms of the mental aspect, he is pretty far ahead for a freshman."
  • Freshman CB Devian Shelton made a great leaping play to breakup what looked like a sure touchdown pass.
  • While the secondary was burned on a number of deep passes, senior DB Jawanza Starling made a great read staying home on a trick play for an interception.
  • Kiffin has pointed several times to "preseason game two," which is this Sunday at the Coliseum.  He is hoping to test his backups under live conditions.  "Until you've played, you haven't played," the head coach is fond of saying.
  • Here's the rest of what he had to offer...

Season Preview: Women's Soccer

As is customary, USC women's soccer kicks off the 2012-13 Trojan athletic calendar with a season-opening game at Cal State Fullerton this Friday (August 17) at 7 p.m.

The Women of Troy feature 20 new players on their roster of 34, so the hopes of a bounceback season after missing the NCAA Tournament in 2011 are bright.  Ali Khosroshahin's young team won an exhibition game last week 3-0 over Cal Poly and all three goals were either scored or created by freshmen.

Samantha Johnson is expected to fill the leadership role as the team's top returning star.  The versatile senior will likely start the season controlling the midfield after playing several different positions last season.

TBAA Youth Baseball Clinic

Last week, the Trojan Baseball Alumni Association (TBAA) conducted its second annual Youth Baseball Clinic with attendance free to at-risk kids near USC and in outlying areas.  The clinic was a full day of drills on the fundamentals of the game with instruction from former USC baseball players.

T-shirts, lunches, tours of the Hall of Fame facilities and certificates were provided to all participants. The parents, who accompanied their kids, enjoyed a Q&A session.

Three years ago, the TBAA was formed with a basic straight forward goal to keep former players connected and informed on baseball events and activities.  They also wanted to promote the game of baseball to young kids and help them understand the fundamentals like they were taught.

Any former baseball players wanting to be involved with future clinics or other TBAA activities may click here to get on the weekly update list.

Former USC football and baseball star Rodney Peete worked with the kids.

Fall Camp #9: Notes

Lane Kiffin canceled the morning practice leaving just a late afternoon session under the sun.

  • Camp is starting to weigh on the Trojans' numbers.  While the team does not release injury specifics, the entire corps of starting linebackers and CB Nickell Robey did not practice among many others.
  • Thumbnail image for Agholor-Camp9-McG.jpgKiffin's philosophy is that injuries provide an opportunity for youth and depth to grow.  Freshman LB Scott Starr is an example of a player "turning the corner" thanks to increased reps.
  • WR George Farmer has returned to health.  He was impressive in one-on-one drills using his hands to be physical at the line of scrimmage.  Kiffin explained that the expectations are high for Farmer over the next two weeks to show the coaches what he can do.
  • De'Von Flournoy seems to have solidified the role vacated by Brandon Carswell as the intangibles receiver.  "My job is to go into the receivers' meetings knowing all three positions," said the experienced Flournoy.  "[Carswell] helped our team in a lot of situations because he knew what to do and he executed when his number was called."
  • Freshman WR Nelson Agholor (photo by John McGillen) had a drop in practice today, which is all part of the learning process.  Kiffin compared his "preparation" to that of Robert Woods and Marqise Lee, and the veterans have taken notice too.  "[Agholor] can make plays on the ball," Flournoy said.  "He did not come in here just to be a freshman.  He came in here to win a spot."
  • The head coach found himself embroiled in a coaches' poll controversy this week.  He has decided to remove himself as a voter.  "I apologize if anyone thought that I was misleading them," Kiffin said today.  "I'm always trying to do things better.  Looking back, I wouldn't have done it in the first place."
  • Dion Bailey said it best in response to all the questions about whether or not Kiffin voted the Trojans first in the preseason, "It doesn't matter where he voted us because he can't play for us."
  • TE Randall Telfer should have had the two best plays of the day.  Twice, he turned LB Jabari Ruffin inside-out and freed himself for a deep ball, but backup QB Max Wittek overshot him on both occasions.  Wittek has a cannon for an arm, but his deep ball range finder was off today.
  • Here is Lane Kiffin's full response to the coaches' poll controversy and much more...

Johnson Tops Farah

At USC, Steve Johnson and Robert Farah were doubles partners and shared a pair of national team championships.  Now on the ATP circuit, the Trojan duo are battling to scrape together professional wins and ranking points.

Johnson and Farah stood across the net from each other in the final of the Comerica Bank Challenger in Aptos, CA, this past weekend.  Johnson got the better of his former teammate (6-3, 6-3) to win his first professional tournament.

Johnson (pictured) banked $14,400 with the win and moved his ranking to No. 235.  He will make his second major appearance at the U.S. Open in New York later this month.

George Farmer may be considered the third member of the talented Serra receiving trio, but he makes no concessions to any player when it comes to ability.

While he tries to stay healthy and earn a spot in the USC offense, he had some fun with our Andie Hagemann.

After back-to-back Final Fours, the AVCA has tipped USC women's volleyball to finish No. 5 in the country.

Click here for the preseason poll.

The Women of Troy do have to replace National Player of the Year Alex Jupiter and All-Americans Kendall Bateman and Lauren Williams, but Mick Haley's team reloads with a talented squad led by All-American libero Natalie Hagglund (pictured).

USC was picked to finish third behind Stanford and UCLA in the Pac-12 preseason coaches' poll.  The Women of Troy are the defending conference champions.

Fall Camp #8: Notes

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

Week one of fall camp is officially in the books.

  • Freshman OT Max Tuerk filled in for Aundrey Walker at left tackle today. Walker is still sidelined with a right wrist injury.
  • During Spring ball it was discussed that Kevin Graf would battle with Walker for the LT position following Kalil's departure. Kiffin assured that Graf would remain on the right side.
  • CB Torin Harris did not practice however, Kiffin believes that Harris will return soon.
  • The back-up quarterback still has not been named. A decision is expected to be made next week. Kiffin did not allude to whether Wittek or Kessler being a front-runner in the competition. He did however say that he feels Wittek or Kessler would be able to play if needed and without the need to change the offense.
  • With Devon Kennard potentially being out for the 2012 season, the defensive line was one of the biggest concerns going into fall camp. However, depth does rule in their favor with many versatile players that have been able to fill in on the defensive line.
  • The defensive line practiced extensive goal line drills today in which featured two exciting scuffles between the offense and defense.
  • Safety T.J. McDonald, who is known for his aggressive style of play, was excited about the new goal line. "It's a time you can't really help but go live because as a defense you're going to give up a yard or two if you don't," McDonald said. "We're going at it but at the end of the day, we are a team and there's no hard feelings off the field."
  • Kiffin resonated similar sentiments as McDonald but overall was displeased with the scuffle and emphasized that it will not happen again.
  • Going into week two of fall camp, Kiffin emphasized the need for the team to remain focused upon themselves not any opponents. That task may be difficult to handle considering the season and home opener against Hawaii is just over two weeks away.

Olympic Spotlight: London Called, Trojans Answered

Quite simply, this was the greatest Olympic Games in USC history.  Trojans set new school records by earning 12 golds and 25 total medals.

The 25 total medals were the most by an American university this year, while the 12 golds tied Stanford for the most at London 2012.  If USC athletes had competed as a country, they would have placed sixth in the gold medal standings and 11th in overall medals.

Felix-Triple-Gold.jpgThe Women of Troy led the way.  Both American swimmer Rebecca Soni (two golds and a silver in London) and sprinter Allyson Felix (three golds in London) tied Australian swimmer Murray Rose for the USC record of six career medals.

Felix now owns four Olympic gold medals, which ties swimmers Janet Evans, Lenny Krayzelburg, John Naber and Murray Rose and basketballer Lisa Leslie for the most ever by a Trojan.

(Photo of Felix via her Instagram)

And of course, the Olympics are always about stories of patriotism, passion and perseverance.

Bryshon Nellum, who was shot in the legs as a freshman at USC, fought all the way back to become America's top 400m runner and push Team USA to a silver medal alongside Trojan teammate Josh Mance in the 1600m relay.  Nellum will carry the United States flag around the Olympic Stadium in the closing ceremonies Sunday.

USC is the home of Olympians and the shear numbers astound with 41 Trojans having participated at London 2012, which tied for the most by a university at London 2012.

The updated all-time medal count stands at 287 (135 golds, 87 silvers and 65 bronzes), including at least one gold medal in every summer Olympics since 1912.

Fall Camp #6 and #7: Notes

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

The Trojans participated in their first two-a-day practice of fall camp.

  • According to Kiffin, the sixth day of fall camp told two stories. He felt the offense shined in the morning session and the defense did well in the afternoon.
  • Kiffin said that having ten fewer players is starting to affect the team. "Those ten that aren't there, you feel that," Kiffin said. "You feel it wear down on your guys."
  • LB Hayes Pullard spent some time at middle linebacker and Kiffin is satisfied with his progress.
  • Kiffin remarked that the offensive line still needs lots work. "The right ends are getting a lot of sacks," Kiffin said.
  • However, Kiffin said that he is comfortable with the positions of running back, quarterback, and safety. "We have a lot of work to do in regards to our back-ups being comfortable enough to play," Kiffin said.
  • WR Robert Woods did not practice during the second session. According to Kiffin, Woods is on a one-a-day schedule. "Our morning practice is more sped up and he did a lot in the first session," Kiffin said.
  • Woods said that fellow WR Marqise Lee has become a leader on team. "He is playing a lot better definitely but aside from that I feel he is definitely a leader," Woods said. "He speaks up and is trying to get everyone motivated."
  • Also, Woods was complimentary of kicker Andre Heidari. "He has a good leg and we just have to put him in the right field position so he can make that kick," Woods said. "We're always trying to score but if we are not able to, we have a great kicker that can get us those three points."
  • As Woods is on a one-a-day schedule, the Trojan offense has relied on the talent of Marqise Lee. Lee, who is a two-sport athlete, said that he is always trying to improve. "I went out for track because I wanted to get faster," Lee said. "I am also working on my routes, alignment and one of my goals is to not drop the ball at all."

USC held its first scrimmage of fall camp today at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Here are the highlights.

Nellum to Carry U.S. Flag

Written by USC blog contributor, Andie Hagemann

Track and field athlete and current USC student, Bryshon Nellum, has been named to carry the United States flag for the Closing Ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympic Games this Sunday.

During his freshman year at USC, Nellum was a victim of a random gunshot attack to his legs. The injury forced Nellum to miss the 2009 season and most of the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Nellum completed the entire 2012 season and is the reigning Pac-12 champion in the 400m dash. He also led the 4x400m relay team to second-place at the 2012 NCAA Championships

Nellum (pictured left) and the USA men's 4x400m relay team won silver, finishing in 2:57.05. He also competed in the men's 400m dash and placed ninth with a time of 45.02.

Click here for the complete scrimmage recap.

On the fifth day of fall camp, the Trojans scrimmaged at the Coliseum.

  • The Trojans wore full pads in today's scrimmage at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
  • CB Torin Harris went down with a injury to his right hamstring while covering Randall Telfer. Harris was sidelined most of last season due to a shoulder injury.
  • WR George Farmer did not participate in the scrimmage. Farmer injured his hamstring on Monday.
  • LT Aundrey Walker did not practice because of an injury to his right wrist.
  • TB Silas Redd had the most notable performance of the day of the running backs with a 43-yard run.
    barkley.jpg
  • The running backs fumbled four times in today's scrimmage but QB Matt Barkley (pictured on the first day of camp by Chris Sanchez) believes that the offense will gain confidence with more experience throughout the remainder of camp. "[The offense] needs a lot of work," Barkley said. "Some guys stepped up and made plays but we need to hold on to the ball. There are plays being made but they need to be made consistently."
  • Lane Kiffin stated that the defense is ahead of the defense following today's scrimmage at the Coliseum. "As usual we have younger guys making a lot of mistakes but that's why we come in here," Kiffin said. "I thought the defense was ahead of the offense which is usually the case."
  • Josh Shaw, who transferred from Florida, will remain at safety according to Monte Kiffin. Kiffin remarked positively on the progress of both Shaw and Gerald Bowman. "Josh Shaw is just playing safety," Kiffin said. "Shaw and Bowman are both new here. They have practiced really well this week and did some good things today."

With the fourth practice in the books, the Trojans continue to improve in fall camp.

  • Thursday's practice ran shorter than the previous three due to tomorrow's scrimmage scheduled for 12:30pm at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
  • The team wore shoulder pads again today. Like yesterday, practice featured immense physicality.
  • DE Morgan Breslin's performance thus far in fall camp has impressed Kiffin. According to Kiffin, Breslin has improved greatly since the spring and will be an asset to the defensive line.
  • WR Robert Woods is continuing to regain his stride. "This is the best he has looked since last year," Kiffin said. "It is good to see him push a little more and run five or six plays in a row."
  • LB Hayes Pullard will be learning middle linebacker in anticipation if Lamar Dawson is sidelined with an injury this season. "We are all trying to learn every position," Pullard said. "Dion [Bailey] is trying to learn my position and I am trying to learn middle linebacker. We are trying to prepare for specific offenses."  Kiffin stated that preparing Pullard now for a potential transition to middle linebacker will benefit the team later in the season.
  • The Trojan defense is gaining confidence in its defensive scheme. "We are comfortable with the defense," said safety T.J. McDonald. "We have started to ask questions and pick apart the brains of our coaches. That's the only way you get better and that's exactly what we're doing."

Olympic Spotlight: Marathon Woman

Current Trojan Haley Anderson broke new ground for an American by earning silver in the swimming marathon 10K this morning.  The senior charged down the leaders in the final 1000m and nearly stole gold, but a photo finish placed her in second.

"I'm disappointed I didn't win gold, but I gave it everything I had," Anderson said. "I'm happy with the result."

The six lap grind around the Thames was a new experience for Anderson who earned All-American honors as a junior in the pool.  USC alum Ous Mellouli, who already took bronze in the 1500m freestyle, will compete in the men's open water marathon Friday.

Click here for the full story on Anderson.

While USC is guaranteed to bank some more medals today in women's water polo and women's soccer, Nicole Davis and Team USA women's volleyball reserved a spot on the podium by sweeping Korea in the semifinals.  The gold medal match is Saturday.

On the track, Duane Solomon ran the second best time in American history, but it was only good enough for 4th in the record-setting 800m final.  And, despite Manteo Mitchell running a leg of Team USA's 4x400m relay on a broken fibula, USC teammates Josh Mance and Bryshon Nellum pulled the Americans into the final.

Summer 60: Randall Telfer

USC sophomore TE Randall Telfer was an underrated force during his freshman season.  He finished the campaign with 26 catches for 273 yards and 5 TDs.

Here he is on the hot seat with Farren Benjamin...

Fall Camp #3: Notes

The first practice under the afternoon sun tested the Trojans' conditioning.

  • The players wore shoulder pads today, which led to more physicality and intensity.  As is typical of this point in camp, the defense appeared to be a step ahead of the offense.
  • However, FB Soma Vainuku caused the biggest reaction by bowling over S Gerald Bowman during a run drill.  He has been impressive in the first three days of camp.
  • Nickell Robey is the best cornerback in the Pac-12, but he had his hands full with Marqise Lee today.  The sophomore wide receiver won most of their battles when the ball was in the air.
  • While Lee and Robert Woods own the top two receiving spots, De'Von Flournoy has become the surprise leader at the third position.  "Flournoy right now would be way ahead because of knowledge of the game," Kiffin said.
  • George Farmer wants to compete for a wideout spot, but his body won't let him at the moment.  "It is frustrating, but I can't let myself get down.  I have to keep pushing for it," Farmer said."
  • Walker-Camp2-CS.jpgNelson Agholor appeared to be exhausted mid practice, but he pushed through and continues to work on the mental side of the position.
  • LT Aundrey Walker (pictured last night by Chris Sanchez) is a big focus of camp.  He is taking over for Matt Kalil, the top NFL draft pick among offensive linemen.  "He was a mentor to me and I love him for that," Walker said of filling Kalil's shoes.  "I'm not thinking about the pressure because it will just confuse me and mess with my mind.  I'm just thinking about blocking."
  • Walker lost 85 pounds in the offseason and now needs to gain 10-15 pounds back, which brought a smile to the big man's face.  However, he is no longer the biggest man on the field with mountainous freshman OL Zach Banner checking in at 6'9", 335 lbs.  "He's huge," Walker said about Banner.  "He's a great kid though.  He's willing to work."
  • Kiffin singled out Max Tuerk as the freshman offensive lineman who is the closest to breaking the rotation.
  • The head coach also named S Demetrius Wright the defensive MVP among the less heralded players.  "He seems to have turned the corner," Kiffin said.
  • A pair of plays of the day: Dion Bailey jumped in front of a Cody Kessler pass and took it to the house for six.  On the other side, Matt Barkley floated a perfect screen pass to Curtis McNeal who traveled 55 yards down the sideline for a score.

Olympic Spotlight: Finally Felix

In her third Olympics, Allyson Felix finally crossed the finish line first.  The USC alum ran a 21.88 in the 200m to sprint away down the home stretch en route to her first ever individual Olympic gold medal.

The race unfolded as expected with the fastest woman in the world, Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, controlling the first 100 meters, but Felix kicked past her rivals for a convincing win.  In doing so, she fulfilled her single-minded goal of turning 200m silvers from Athens and Beijing into London gold.

Click here for the full recap of USC's day on the track.

Trojan beach volleyball pair Jennifer Kessy and April Ross enjoyed a spectacular run in London, but the duo ran into living legends Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings in the gold medal match.  May and Walsh, who have never lost an Olympic beach volleyball match, took the final in straight sets (21-16, 21-16).

With Felix's gold and silvers for Kessy and Ross, the #LON2012USC medal count is up to 5 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze.

New Faces at Practice

The 2012 USC football roster has been updated with the addition of several walk-ons and number changes for WR Nelson Agholor (now No. 15) and S Gerald Bowman (now No. 27).

Plus, the NCAA approved a rule to allow football programs to have four graduate-assistants instead of two, so USC added Ross Cumming and Mark Watson.

Cumming (pictured), who will work primarily with the linebackers and special teams, is a familiar name.  He played for the Trojans the last four years as a versatile linebacker, fullback and special teams captain.

Watson is an import from Drake University, where he was an assistant coach the last two seasons.  He will work closely with the secondary.

Fall Camp #2: Notes

The final night practice of fall camp as the schedule shifts to afternoons starting tomorrow.

  • No reported injury news other than WR George Farmer who remains banged up.  "We have seen some great flashes when he's been healthy, but unfortunately, that hasn't been that often," Lane Kiffin said about Farmer.  "It's not his fault.  He's trained very hard."
  • Screen Shot 2012-08-07 at 10.53.21 PM.pngThe arrival of Silas Redd obscured the other big story of the summer which was Devon Kennard's injury (pictured).  Already thin on the defensive line, Ed Orgeron is trying to sort out a unit with only two veteran stalwarts, DE Wes Horton and DT George Uko.
  • The first move of camp was switching sophomore J.R. Tavai to defensive end and committing to freshman Leonard Williams as a defensive tackle.  Williams drew praise from his teammates for showing great hustle tonight.
  • "Like [Shaun] Cody, but a little bit bigger," Orgeron provided the scouting report on Williams.  "Good long leverage and gets separation." He expects Williams to tip the scales at 300 lbs. eventually.
  • Orgeron is hoping to make redshirt freshman DT Christian Heyward a part of the rotation, but he was hurt most of last season and needs to see how he reacts when pads go on this week.
  • Meanwhile, the starting linebackers know exactly who they are, but the backups are almost entirely freshmen.  The "veteran" of the group is redshirt freshman Anthony Sarao, who spent last year pretending to be Vontaze Burfict and Manti Te'o on scout team.
  • Sarao on scout team: "That was fun last year having Matt Kalil trying to fight me because I was Vontaze, but now it is time to get focused."
  • While he awaits his opportunity at linebacker, Sarao will captain the punt coverage team.  "No scrubs play special teams around here," he emphasized the importance of his new role.  "Starters play special teams."
  • Offensively, D.J. Morgan showed off his track speed on a long cutback run.  With Redd in the rotation, Morgan's role presumably shrunk, but maybe not.  "He has handled [Redd's arrival] really well," said the head coach.  "I'm sure D.J. hears from a lot of people that he is the odd man out, but that's not the case.  It's good to see how he has responded."
  • Redd, Curtis McNeal and Morgan are on the smaller side, so Soma Vainuku could see the ball in short yardage positions.  Listed at 250 lbs., "He is faster than most of our tailbacks. He is a very special athlete," Kiffin said.
  • For a position that supposedly lacked depth, Kiffin was complimentary of RB "Buck" Allen as well.  He listed him as another example of a player making huge strides going from his first year to his second.
  • Here is Kiffin's full wrap on the night...

Olympic Spotlight: All American

Trailing by a set and down early in the second, April Ross and Jennifer Kessy's chances at gold looked as bleak as the London weather.  The Southern California girls may not have been raised to play beach volleyball in a driving rain storm, but they are well versed in the fight on spirit.

The USC duo stormed back in their semifinal against Brazil's best, Juliana Silva and Larissa Franca, to steal the second set (21-19) and then closed like champions in the third (15-12).

The win set up a dream final between the upstart American pair and the queens of the beach, reigning two-time Olympic gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings.  The all American final will take place on Wednesday at 1 p.m. pacific.

USC alums Lauren Wenger and Kami Craig combined to send Team USA to the women's water polo gold medal match against Spain.  The U.S. team needed overtime to knock off Australia 11-9.

Wenger played her best match of the tournament scoring two goals in regulation.  And then in OT, Craig drove the final stake into the Australians with a game-sealing goal.

The U.S. Women's Water Polo team has never won Olympic gold.  The Americans will need to defeat upstart Spain in order to reach the top of the medal podium.

The gold medal match is at Noon pacific on Thursday.

You may have read that former USC CB Terrell Thomas suffered another torn ACL at Giants training camp, but the Super Bowl champion only aggravated his surgically repaired ligament.  Thomas saw three different doctors who eventually arrived at the treatment plan of rehab not surgery.

In a best-case scenario, he could be back in 4-6 weeks as opposed to missing his second consecutive season.

USC Football is back on the practice field...

  • New year, new injury policy.  The coaches and players are going to be mum on injury specifics, so our reports will mostly consist of "in or out" unless Lane Kiffin elaborates on specific cases.
  • Tonight, C Khaled Holmes, WR George Farmer, DE DeVante Wilson and DE Wes Horton were among the players to miss a portion of practice.  Kiffin explained that Horton and Wilson suffered from cramps due to dehydration.
  • Also, incoming freshman WR Darreus Rogers has yet to be cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse, while CB Isiah Wiley and LB Marquis Simmons are awaiting summer school grades before practicing.
  • Woods-All-American-Walk.JPGRobert Woods participated on a limited basis as Kiffin hopes to ease him back from offseason ankle surgery.  (Photo of Woods coming up the new All-American walk from the McKay Center to practice)
  • Silas Redd was the star of the show tonight as he got mobbed by the media hoard after his first practice at USC.  The running back, who is wearing No. 25, flashed great speed.
  • "I am a Trojan now," Redd pronounced.  "This is known as 'RB-U', so I was excited to suit up."
  • "I made a business decision," Redd explained coming to USC.  "Academically and athletically, I felt like this is the best place to be."
  • Presumed starting running back Curtis McNeal looked awfully sharp in the opening practice as well.  "Curtis has grown up with his approach to the game and his approach to life," Kiffin complimented the senior.  "This just pushes him a little further.  We all need competition."
  • "Those guys are competitors," Redd said about his fellow backs.  "We are coming out here and competing for that No. 1 spot.  They understand that.  I understand that.  There's no animosity."
  • Click here for video of the entire Silas Redd interview!
  • With Redd in tow, Nelson Agholor is playing wide receiver exclusively, which was always his wish, according to Kiffin.  He is a tremendous athlete who stood out from the very start of practice.  He is wearing No. 15.
  • Defensively, J.R. Tavai is going to get the first shot at replacing injured DE Devon Kennard.  He moved over from defensive tackle leaving redshirt freshman Antwaun Woods to fill the void.
  • Other position news: Freshman Leonard Williams is playing defensive tackle, while Charles Burks moved to fullback.
  • On the field, Matt Barkley was picked off twice.  Jawanza Starling stepped in front of one and then Anthony Brown made a great play to intercept a deep ball.
  • True freshman LB Jabari Ruffin made the play of the day.  In his debut practice, he showed tremendous athleticism covering FB Soma Vainuku on a wheel route and knocking a pass away.
  • Here is Lane Kiffin on the first night of fall camp...

Olympic Spotlight: El Super Sanchez

Track is not a sport for veterans, but Felix Sanchez, who won gold back at Athens in 2004, found his fastest time in eight years to win the gold medal in the 400m IH tonight in London.

Sanchez-Celebrates-Gold-Getty.jpgThe Dominican hurdler posted the best time in the semifinals and followed it up with a 47.63 to become USC's second individual gold medalist of the 2012 Olympics.

Also on the track, Allyson Felix (200m) and Duane Solomon (800m) won their round one heats to advance to semifinals on Tuesday.

Amy Rodriguez was relegated to cheerleader, but the U.S. Women's Soccer team won an epic semifinal 4-3 in overtime over Canada to advance to the gold medal game against Japan on Thursday (11:45 a.m. pt).

Finally, Donald Suxho and USA Men's Volleyball bounced back from a tough loss to Russia by sweeping Tunisia. They finished 4-1 in their group and now move on to bracket play.

Already leading the nation in Olympians, USC found its 41st Trojan competing at London 2012.  French swimmer Margaux Farrell, who is headed to graduate school at USC's Annenberg, won bronze last week in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay.

Farrell attended Indiana as an undergrad, but she is looking to get her master's in broadcast journalism.

WE PLAY TO FINISH

At fall camp 2009, Matt Barkley won the starting quarterback job as a true freshman.  It seemed like success would always come easily to the Mater Dei product who was born a Trojan.

Instead, Barkley's perseverance has been tested every year since.  He has endured a coaching change, injuries and crippling NCAA sanctions only to reaffirm his loyalty to the Trojan Family and finish what he started.

Here is Matt Barkley's story in pictures as No. 7 begins his final journey at USC...

Mr. Polamalu

When he is done cracking skulls on the gridiron, Troy Polamalu wants to be a high school teacher.  The future Hall of Fame safety came back to USC to earn his B.A. in history last year.

Click here for a story on Polamalu from the Dornsife School of Letters, Arts and Sciences.

"It was something that I had left unfinished in my life," Polamalu said about his degree. "So it was great to bring closure. It was a huge blessing, and a relief to not have that hanging over me."

Polamalu begins his 10th NFL season with the Pittsburgh Steelers this fall.

USC football fall camp is officially in session.  The Trojans moved into their home for the month, Fluor Tower, and now begin the grind to kickoff on September 1.

Matt Barkley was kind enough to give us a tour of move-in day and we caught up with Penn State transfer RB Silas Redd, who will be rooming with fellow Norwalk, CT, native QB Max Wittek.

Matua Dead at 28

Former USC offensive guard Fred Matua died of a heart related issue Sunday morning in Los Angeles.  The 2003 and 2004 national champion was a passionate and vocal leader on one of the best offensive lines in school history.

Click here for the complete obituary.

Immediately after the news broke, Matua's Trojan teammates took to Twitter to pour out their love, prayers and memories of No. 51.  Ryan Kalil, the center who played next to Matua, posted an old quote from his fallen linemate.

"I can't change.  Same volume, every day.  Loud.  You've got to be loud.  Being loud puts pressure on yourself." - Fred Matua (1984-2012)

Olympic Spotlight: Just Beachy

Jennifer Kessy and April Ross will play for a medal at London 2012.  The American beach volleyball pair advanced to the semifinals with a win over the Czech team Sunday.

Ross-Quarters-Kyle-Terada-USAT.jpgKessy and Ross will battle Brazilian duo Larissa Franca and Juliana Felisberta Silva on Tuesday for a spot in the gold medal match.  Fellow Americans Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh-Jennings are still alive on the other side of the draw.

Team USA women's water polo secured its spot in the semifinals as well.  With Kami Craig playing a dominant role again, the Americans defeated Italy 9-6.

Flora Bolonyai bounced back from a rocky start in the Olympic Games to lead Hungary to a dramatic 11-10 quarterfinal win while recording six saves.  She will meet incoming Trojan Anni Espar of Spain, who scored twice in today's win over Great Britain.

On the track, Bryshon Nellum narrowly missed out on a spot in the 400m finals by finishing third in his heat with a 45.02.  The Cinderella story came up .03 short of a qualifying time.

High jumper Jesse Williams did make the finals however by clearing 2.29 meters.  The final is set for Tuesday.

Olympic Spotlight: Suxho Set

To quote Paul Sunderland, "This so far [is] the play of the Olympic Games."

Although the U.S. lost to Russia in five sets, USC alum Donald Suxho created an indelible moment with some quick thinking.

Olympic Spotlight: Soni Glory

The aquatics center at London 2012 is officially closed after USA Swimming went out in one more blaze golden glory.  The women's 4x100m medley relay set a world record giving Rebecca Soni, who stretched the lead during the second leg, another gold to cap her second Olympics.

Soni-Franklin.jpgThe relay team of Missy Franklin, Soni, Dana Vollmer and Allison Schmitt finished the Games with a ridiculous 12 combined gold medals.  Soni leaves London with two golds and a silver.

Ous Mellouli, who was forced to wait until the final weekend to compete, backed up his gold in Beijing with a bronze in the 1500m freestyle.  The pride of Tunisia is still scheduled to participate in the Olympic swimming marathon on August 10.

The USC medal count now stands at 3 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze.

On the track, Felix Sanchez was the top story as the veteran posted the top semifinal time in the 400m IH. He will look to grab gold for Puerto Rico on Monday.

Bryshon Nellum's status on Team USA took an interesting turn after his first race.  The surprise qualifier from the U.S. Olympic Trials advanced to the 400m semifinal, while 2008 gold medalist LaShawn Merritt pulled up in his race with a hamstring injury.

In the sprint for fastest woman in the world, Allyson Felix came in fifth with a personal best time of 10.89.  She will now switch focus to her primary event, the 200m, which begins on Monday.

Olympic Spotlight: Track Begins

As the Olympics transition from swimming to track and field, several Trojans got off to good starts on the London oval.  Allyson Felix (100m), Emir Bekric (400m IH), Felix Sanchez (400m IH) and Carol Rodriguez (400m) will run again tomorrow after advancing to the semifinals of their respective events.

mellouli.jpgThe Aquatics Center is not quite closed yet though.  Ous Mellouli (pictured) finished second in the 1500m freestyle and will compete for gold around 11:36 a.m. pacific Saturday.

In team competitions, Amy Rodriguez and U.S. Women's Soccer moved on to the semifinals after a 2-0 win against New Zealand.  Rodriguez, who came on as a sub again, will begin medal play Monday.

In volleyball, Jennifer Kessy and April Ross cruised by Swiss opposition on the beach en route to a straight sets win in the round of 16.  And indoors, Nicole Davis and Team USA clinched a spot in the elimination field with a sweep of Serbia.

The water polo action was a little bit tighter.

The U.S. Women's Team survived a scare from China to win 7-6 thanks in part to a strong performance from Kami Craig.  Meanwhile, Spain got another big effort from incoming Trojan Anna Espar, who contributed her second hat trick of the Olympics, in a win over future teammate Flora Bolonyai and Hungary.

Team USA faces Italy and Aniko Pelle in the quarterfinals on Sunday (6:50 a.m.) followed by Bolonyai and Hungary against Sofia Konoukh and Russia (8:10 a.m.).  Espar and Spain battle hosts Great Britain at 11 a.m.

Men's Hoops Optimism

Despite a 6-26 season with just one Pac-12 victory, the men's basketball program is not talking about redemption.  The 2012-13 Trojans are a completely different bunch with last year's injuries now healed and a talented crop of fresh blood.

"Last year we returned nine points per game. This year we return 103," head coach Kevin O'Neill told Seth Davis. "We're deep. We have experience. We should be good."

Click here for the full story in Sports Illustrated.

This time last year, the 2011-12 season started to unravel when PG Jio Fontan blew out his knee during a preseason game in Brazil.  Now, Fontan (pictured) has been cleared for full contact practice, Seth Rubinroit first reported yesterday.

Olympic Spotlight: Michelle Ford

The streak was over.  USC had won a gold medal in every Olympics since 1912, but the Team USA boycott of Moscow 1980 due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan meant no Trojans stood atop the medal podium.

None at the time at least...

At the time, Michelle Ford, 18, was embroiled in a controversy down under.  The Australian swimmer was offered money by her own country to stay home, but she had no intentions of sitting this one out.

Ford quickly pocketed a bronze in the 200m butterfly, but more importantly, she learned the strategy of her East German rivals.  They were swimming in pairs sending out a fast pacesetter to tire out the field only to have the country's best hope bring it home at the end.

The 800m freestyle world record holder also suspected that many of her opponents had a chemical advantage.

Michelle_Ford_gold.jpg"The doping issues were at large, but they were not testing like they are today," Ford said.  "I had to put that out of my mind and convince myself that I could win anyway."

She did win.  And in doing so, she became the only non-Soviet bloc female swimmer to take home gold from Moscow.

Ford also overcame the mental anguish of death threats from her own countrymen.  Originally branded a "traitor" to the cause, she believes that her gold helped "reunite" Australia, which was split on the decision to boycott.

"On top of winning the gold medal for me, it was a relief to win one for Australia," said Ford about winning the country's first gold of the 1980 Olympics.

If winning gold was unlikely, Ford's journey to becoming a Trojan was even more fortuitous.  She trained in Nashville before the Moscow games and then signed to go to UCLA until the head coach left the team upon her arrival in Los Angeles.

Ford-2008.JPGReleased from her agreement, Ford narrowed her choices down to Stanford and USC.  With the help of legendary Australian and Trojan swimmer Murray Rose, a six-time Olympic medalist, USC landed its big fish.

In doing so, the streak survived.  USC athletics boasts a current, former or future Trojan gold medalist in every Olympics for a century (1912-2012).

"I'm so proud to have kept the golden torch through the ages alive," said Michelle Ford-Eriksson (pictured in 2008), who lives in Switzerland now. "It is a marvelous heritage.  To be a part of that history, it just makes me so proud."

Olympic Spotlight: Soni Gold

USC alum Rebecca Soni solidified her position as the world's best breaststroker by setting her second world record (2:19.59) in as many days en route to a gold medal in the 200m final.  She is the first ever woman to repeat as Olympic champion in a breaststroke event.

Soni also won the Trojans first individual gold medal of London 2012.  Her career medal haul sits at four with a gold and silver in each of the last two Olympics.

The USC medal count now stands at six with two gold, two silver and two bronze.

The other drama of the day unfolded on the beach as Jennifer Kessy and April Ross were pushed to the brink against Spain.  The beach volleyball duo worked overtime to win the match 19-17 in the third set and the group with a 3-0 record.

Coaches' No. 3

In a surprise to some, USC was picked No. 3 in the preseason college football coaches' poll behind last year's BCS finalists LSU and Alabama.  The Trojans did have the second most first place votes behind the defending national champion Crimson Tide, but the Tigers will start the season in the top spot.

Pac-12 rivals Oregon are picked to finish No. 5 in the country, while Stanford slots in at No. 18.  Also on the Trojans schedule, Notre Dame is ranked No. 24, and Washington (No. 26) and Utah (No. 32) are just outside the rankings.

The reigning Olympic champion in the 200m breaststroke set a new world record by swimming her semifinal heat in 2:20.00 today.  Soni bested the field by 2.23 seconds.

Hopefully, she has something left for Thursday's final at 11:40 a.m. pacific.

Kiffin on Redd

Lane Kiffin explained how the unique recruiting process of Silas Redd went down on ESPN Radio with Colin Cowherd.  The head coach tells the story in detail from visiting Redd and his family in Connecticut to his expectations for the former Penn State running back this season.

Click here to listen to the interview.

The addition of Redd, who ran for 1,241 yards last year, gives the USC running game another weapon to go along with Curtis McNeal (1,005 yards rushing in 2012).  The Trojans now have two running backs and two receivers (Robert Woods and Marqise Lee) who cracked the 1,000-yard mark last year to go along with senior QB Matt Barkley (3,528 passing yards in 2012).

Signed, Sealed and Delivering

Former USC LT Matt Kalil signed a four-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings worth nearly $20 million ($12 million guaranteed).  The fourth overall selection in the 2012 NFL Draft reported to camp on time and has already opened up eyes.

The Trojan All-American has been a source of frustration for All-Pro defensive end Jared Allen, who admitted the rookie tackle has "all the skill set you'd want."  Allen was observed cursing in frustration after Kalil stonewalled him on back-to-back plays in a practice this week.

Kalil (signing his contract below) is expected to start right away and protect the blind side of second year quarterback Christian Ponder, who helped push along the rookie's contract negotiations, so he would not miss any practices.

"He's a key part of what we're trying to do in 2012, and I don't know who his happier, him or Christian Ponder," said head coach Leslie Frazier.

Changing Sox

Mitch Mustain's path to athletic stardom has been quite a bit windier than most Gatorade National Players of the Year.

The quarterback phenom was benched despite going undefeated at Arkansas before transferring to USC, where he started just one game in his Trojan career.  After a short stint in minor league professional football, he is now using his blessed right arm to throw fastballs in the Chicago White Sox organization.

Click here for the full story from Gary Klein.

Mustain has made strong early strides on the mound despite not pitching since high school.  He has already moved up a level to Kannapolis in the South Atlantic League, where he has a 1-0 record and a 4.91 ERA.
