As we ramp up our USC Olympic coverage in anticipation of the London 2012 Games, which begin July 27, let's drop some knowledge about Troy's golden past.

Here are the key bragging points:

  • USC has produced more Olympians, Olympic medalists and Olympic gold medalists than any other U.S. university.
  • Trojans have won 123 gold medals, including one in every Olympics since 1912.
  • If USC competed as a country, its 262 total medals would be 17th among all countries, while its 123 gold medals would be 12th.

USC's five most decorated Olympians with four gold medals apiece: John Naber, Lenny Krayzelburg, Janet Evans and Murray Rose (all swimmers) plus Lisa Leslie (women's basketball).

Rose has the largest haul with six total medals (four golds, one silver and one bronze).

If USC is the leader in terms of all US universities, wouldn't that make USC the leading Olympian university in the history of the world? Just a hunch, unless a Moscow State or a Cambridge can match USC's numbers.

The "Most Olympians of any University in the History of the World" has a nice ring to it, too.
