Olympic Spotlight: Soni Silver

Rebecca Soni won the first silver medal of London 2012 for USC with the narrowest of defeats in the 100m breaststroke.  Soni, who finished second in the same event at Beijing 2008, started slowly before chasing down the field and getting outtouched for gold by a mere .08 seconds.

She will be the favorite in the 200m breaststroke, the event at which she won gold four years ago.  The prelims begin August 1.

Also in the pool, Katinka Hosszu won her semifinal heat in the 200m IM.  The final will be Tuesday at 12:43 p.m. pacific time.

The women's water polo tournament featured seven different Trojans with the highlight performance delivered by incoming freshman Anna Espar, who netted a hat trick for Spain in an 11-8 win over China.  The U.S. team won a shootout 14-13 against Hungary with American Kami Craig scoring on current USC goalie Flora Bolonyai.
