Surprise Second

As expected, Rebecca Soni became the 31st Trojan to qualify for London 2012 last night.  In a shocking turn of events though, Soni finished second in the 100m breaststroke with unheralded newcomer Breeja Larson out-touching her at the wall.

Jessica Hardy, the world record holder in the event, will swim in the 100m breast at the Olympics as Soni's Trojan Swim Club teammate finished a disappointing third.

Soni did not relish her role as favorite at the U.S. Olympic Trials, but she did enough to book her ticket to London.

"It's a different kind of nerves, it kind of turns into an expectation," Soni said. "That's a whole new level of pressure. It's so much easier, looking back four years ago when nobody knew my name. If you didn't make it, no big deal. But now if I didn't make it, it would be, 'Oh why didn't you make it? Why didn't you make it?' I'm really happy, really relieved. Really happy for Bree also."

Soni embraced her stunned Olympic teammate after the race.
