Collegiate baseball recruiting is a lottery. USC head coach Frank Cruz signed an elite class for 2012-13, but major league baseball is equally as interested in the hardball talents.
High school seniors have the option of signing with a big league organization or committing to play for a college for at least three years. After draft day, the waiting game begins.
USC had four commits drafted in the first four rounds. Lakewood HS pitcher Shane Watson (pictured), who was selected 40th overall by the Philadelphia Phillies, heads the list.
"It's a dream come true," Watson told the Daily Breeze. "It's something I've thought about since I was a little kid. I'm just anxious to get started (on the next level), whether it's at USC or with (the Phillies)."
The most recent collective bargaining agreement slots signing bonuses for MLB draft picks in the first 10 rounds. Watson is likely to be offered a figure in the neighborhood of $1.2 million to turn pro.
P Chase DeJong (2nd round), P Kyle Twomey (3rd round) and 3B Rio Ruiz (4th round) will all be faced with difficult decisions. The scale of USC's rebuilding curve changes with each choice.
