Less than four years removed from being shot three times in the legs, USC redshirt senior Bryshon Nellum ran the time of his life to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team in the 400 meters.
Nellum finished third to reigning Olympic gold medalist LaShawn Merritt and NCAA champion Tony McQuay by setting a personal record 44.80. He bested his Trojan teammate Josh Mance, who will join him in London on the 4x400m relay team.
Nellum's destiny was always to run in the Olympics as a national standout coming to USC out of Long Beach Poly High School, but a twist of fate in November 2008 left him to rehabilitate his body and career against the longest of odds. He was off the radar entering the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials before sprinting into the spotlight with the race of his life.
