Best of the Best

The top four men's volleyball teams in the country make up the MPSF Tournament field at Galen Center this weekend and that's before the actual NCAA Final Four takes place at the same venue a week later.

Ciarelli-Galen-UCI-PC.jpgNo. 1 USC men's volley will play a rubber match against No. 2 UC Irvine at 7:30 p.m. Thursday after the Trojans and Anteaters split the regular season series.  The first semifinal pits No. 3 Stanford versus No. 4 BYU.  The final is Saturday at 7 p.m.

At stake, the best four teams in the nation will fill half the Final Four spots (one automatic and one at-large).  If the Trojans do not win the MPSF Tournament, they should be favorites for the at-large spot, but a win over Irvine Thursday would clinch the argument.

Bill Ferguson has his program on one of the great runs in NCAA volleyball history.  The Trojans are a combined 46-8 the last two seasons (.852 winning %), which prompted this feature on the head coach.

USC has made the Final Four two of the previous three seasons, but the program is still searching for its first NCAA crown since 1990.  Riding an 18-match win streak, the Trojans' goal is simply to maintain the momentum for two more weeks in front of a partisan crowd at Galen Center.
