USC has clinched its fifth consecutive crosstown Gauntlet over UCLA!

On the strength of a huge weekend by USC women's rowing, women's track and field, men's tennis and men's and women's golf, the Trojans earned enough rivalry points to secure the annual series yet again.  Troy leads 62.5 to 45 at present.

USC has enjoyed great success at the expense of its rivals in 2011-12 including a 50-0 shutout in football, a national title game victory in men's water polo and a Pac-12 championship win for men's tennis.

USC men's tennis tasted defeat for the time since February 2011 when the Bruins stopped the Trojans 45-match winning streak in the regular season finale.  With a chance to serve revenge, the Trojans responded like the three-time defending national champions they are.

Johnson-P12.jpgUSC knocked off UCLA 4-2 to win the Pac-12 Tournament in Ojai this past weekend behind Steve Johnson, who clinched the title with his 60th consecutive collegiate singles victory.

The difference between winning and losing was sophomore Emilio Gomez.  He served for the match in the regular season loss before dropping his singles point in three sets, but bounced back to defeat Marcos Giron in the Pac-12 championship.

Like the Women of Troy, the men's team is expected to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament starting May 11.

Boselli-Coli-PC.jpgBefore becoming the foundation of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tony Boselli built his legend at Troy as a two-time first team All-American.  The offensive tackle was the 1994 USC team captain and MVP.

Boselli filled out both sides of the student-athlete hyphen.  As a senior, he was named a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete to go along with winning the Morris Trophy as the Pac-10's best offensive lineman.

Sporting his trademark miniature shoulder pads, Boselli only enhanced his legacy at the next level.  He was taken No. 2 overall by the expansion Jaguars in 1995, the first pick in franchise history.

While his NFL career was shortened by injury, he was a four-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowler in seven seasons.  He twice was the NFL Lineman of the Year and was named to the NFL's 1990s All-Decade Team.

Whether on land or the Los Angeles waters, USC topped UCLA this season en route to a fifth consecutive Gauntlet.  The Women of Troy contributed to the clinching weekend by rowing past the Bruins for the 11th consecutive time this past Saturday at the Port of Los Angeles.

USC and UCLA track and field split the annual Dual Meet with the Women of Troy winning their fifth straight rivalry match.

PAYNE-Aareon-USC-UCLA-KL.JPGClick here for the full story.

The Trojans were led by a pair of women who could not be caught, distance runner Zsofia Erdelyi and sprinter Aareon Payne.  The duo combined to win five events on the day.

Erdelyi concluded her triumphant Dual Meet career by winning the 1500 meters and 5000 meters for the fourth consecutive year.  She broke her Dual Meet record in the 5000 and clinched the meet with her win in the 1500.

Fellow senior Aareon Payne claimed victories in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay.  She ran the 200 meters in 23.22 just .02 off her conference-leading time.

The 4x100m relay team posted the best time in the Pac-12 this season (43.95) and eighth best in the NCAA in 2012.

The USC men were defeated despite strong performances from sprinters Aaron Brown (100m and 200m winner), Bryshon Nellum (400m and 4x400m winner), Josh Mance (800m winner) and Reggie Wyatt (400m hurdles and 4x400m winner).  Trojan football stars Nickell Robey and Marqise Lee finished second and third respectively in the long jump, while Abe Markowitz (shot put) and Tony Burnett (triple jump) finished third.

Youth Is Served

USC's sophomore-freshman tandem of Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria used a blend of youthful exuberance and teamwork to win the Pac-12 Doubles Championship this weekend in Ojai.

Click here for the full story.

The Trojan pair knocked off top-seeded Stanford (6-4, 6-4) in the final to earn USC women's tennis its third conference doubles title in the last five years.  Christian, who finished as the runner-up in this tournament teamed with Maria Sanchez last year, found championship bliss with Santamaria.

Ranked No. 4 in the country, USC awaits the NCAA 64-team brackets to see where the road to a championship will begin.  The Trojans are likely to host the first two rounds starting May 11 at Marks Stadium.

Doris' Day

USC freshman golfer Doris Chen won the Pac-12 individual championship and led the Women of Troy to a second place finish in the conference.  Following in Sophia Popov's footsteps, Chen became the second consecutive Trojan freshman to win the conference crown.

Thumbnail image for Doris-Chen-P12.jpgClick here for the full story.

In chilly Pullman, WA, Chen (photo via Pac-12) snatched the title by closing her final round with a string of five birdies in seven holes.  She carded a trophy-raising 68, which is her second best round at USC.

As for the team, Andrea Gaston's squad came up a stroke short of forcing a playoff with Cal.  The Trojans admirably defended their conference crown, but could not get the crucial putts to drop.

"We were very close," said Gaston.  "We had some great birdies down the home stretch and a couple of close birdie putts on the last hole that didn't drop. Over the course of three days, this just shows you how every putt counts."

While Cal won the Pac-12 team title, USC finished ahead of UCLA thus banking five more points in the Gauntlet standings.

Final Four Bid

No. 1 USC men's volleyball received an at-large bid to the NCAA Final Four which begins this Thursday at Galen Center.

Despite dropping a five-set match to UCI in the MPSF semifinals, USC earned its spot in the national semifinals on the strength of an 18-match winning streak and the regular season conference title.  Now, the Trojans have the opportunity to play for a national championship in their own gym with the Trojan Family behind them.

Beware NFC North quarterbacks, the Packers have a pair of USC sackmasters ready to wreak havoc.

Green Bay runs a base 3-4 defense with Clay Matthews as the outside linebacker rushing the quarterback from the front side.  In 2010, he tallied 13.5 sacks, but with increased attention in 2011, his production dipped to 6 sacks for the season.

Enter Nick Perry with the No. 28 overall pick...

The Packers wanted a pass rush threat to terrorize the quarterbacks' blind side.  Perry, who usually played with his hand in the ground as a 4-3 defensive end at USC, will be slotted as a stand-up linebacker opposite Matthews.

"I'll be glad to be across from Clay, create problems with him and be a force on the other side," Perry said last night.  "I will do whatever it takes."

Clarence Davis gets lost in the shuffle when listing the great tailbacks of the John McKay era, but he is one of the most underrated runners in USC football history.

He did not win a Heisman like Mike Garrett, O.J. Simpson, Charles White or Marcus Allen.  He is not the famed Notre Dame slayer like Anthony Davis.  But in his two-year Trojan career, Davis was a 1969 All-American and racked up enough yards (2,323) to sit in the top 15 all-time at Troy.

The two-time All-Pac-8 selection was drafted by the Los Angeles Raiders for which he earned a Super Bowl ring during an eight-year pro career.  Since his football days ended, he has dedicated his time and effort to the Houston school district.

Winners of the Discovery Scholar award were selected for excelling in the classroom and displaying the ability to create exceptional new scholarship. Global Scholars earned their distinction for excelling in their studies at home and abroad.

MPSF Weekend

No. 1 USC men's volleyball will host the MPSF Championships this Thursday and Saturday as the top four teams in collegiate volleyball converge on Galen Center.

The semifinals begin tonight at 5 p.m. with Stanford vs. BYU followed by USC vs. UC Irvine at 7:30 p.m.  The matches will be broadcast LIVE for FREE on USCTrojans.com.

Thanks to an active 18-match win streak, the Trojans are on the doorstep of a Final Four berth needing only a win against UCI to seal their fate.  Senior captain Tony Ciarelli, profiled by Gary Klein in the LA Times, has been the catalyst for this unexpected run.

Ciarelli, who has already earned MPSF Player of the Year honors, was named an AVCA first team All-American.  Senior co-captain Steven Shandrick, freshman setter Micah Christenson and sophomore libero Henry Cassiday made the second team.

Ciarelli, fellow co-captain Steven Shandrick and freshman setter Micah Christenson joined the voice of USC men's volleyball Dustin Avol for a preview of the weekend's action.

No. 3 USC women's water polo has proven to be exactly that in the regular season...the No. 3 team in the country.

Nadia Dan-POdonnel.jpgThe Women of Troy sit behind MPSF foes No. 1 Stanford and No. 2 UCLA with the conference championship at stake this weekend.  The Trojans have lost four matches this season, two to Stanford and two to UCLA.

However, all four losses were decided by a single goal, including a recent overtime loss to the Cardinal in Palo Alto, the site of this weekend's MPSF Tournament.  Jovan Vavic's team is close and still has a shot to run the gauntlet against its rivals.

First up, USC will take on San Jose St., a team the Trojans beat 8-5 earlier this month, and then a looming rematch with UCLA in the semifinals before a prospective final with Stanford.  To follow the Women of Troy's push to the Final Four, go to the MPSF Tournament site.

Olympic Spotlight: Sammy Lee

USC's oldest surviving Olympic medalists are a quartet of gold medal winners from the games last trip to London in 1948: diver Sammy Lee, sprinters Cliff Bourland and Mel Patton, and shot putter Wilbur "Moose" Thompson.

sammy-lee-LAT-LizBaylen.jpgLee is one of five Trojans in the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame.  He was the first Asian American to win Olympic gold for the United States.

He became the first man to win back-to-back gold medals in platform diving by topping the podium at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki.  He would go on to coach the U.S. diving team, including mentoring 5-time Olympic medalist Greg Louganis.

The inspirational diver, who has a square named in his honor at Olympic and Normandie in LA's Koreatown, achieved academic and athletic greatness in the face of intense racism.  His ethnicity limited his access to his local pool in Fresno to just one day per week, so his coach dug him a sand pit in his backyard to practice on dry land.

Dr. Sammy Lee, who received his medical degree from USC in 1947, served in World War II as a Major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.  He would later practice medicine as an ear, nose and throat specialist.

Now 92, Lee represents USC's proud Olympic heritage, which will come full circle this summer as a fresh crop of Trojans descend upon London 64 years later.

USC women's rowing's Varsity Eight boat is off to an unbeaten start this season and surged to a No. 1 national ranking.  The Women of Troy are ranked No. 5 in the country as a team.

The Trojans have an important job to do this weekend to vault USC back above UCLA in the Gauntlet standings.  The Bruins currently lead 42.5 to 40, but Saturday's crosstown match race at the USC boathouse in San Pedro is worth 5 points.

Tina Thompson.jpgTina Thompson is a women's basketball icon for her success at USC, the Olympics and the WNBA.

At Troy, Thompson was a first team All-American in 1997.  She sits fifth all-time in the Trojan record books in scoring and rebounding.

After leaving USC, she became the first player ever drafted into the WNBA.  In her 15 years in the league, Thompson has made the all-star team nine times and won four consecutive titles with the Houston Comets.

The WNBA legend is the only player to compete in every season of the league's history.  She is the all-time leader in points and games played.

Teaming with fellow Trojan Lisa Leslie, Thompson has brought home gold twice from the Olympics in 2004 and 2008.

Final Mocks

The NFL Draft is only a day away, so all media outlets are posting final projections of where the players will fall.

perry-combine-OCR.jpgGeneral consensus: LT Matt Kalil will land between No. 3 and No. 6 in the first round with a likely possibility that he goes to the Vikings.  However, ESPN's Todd McShay has him falling to the Rams in his latest mock (paid link).

DE/OLB Nick Perry (photo via OC Register) looks pretty solid as a late first round pick with many experts matching his pass rushing skills with the Patriots, a team that needs sacks.  NFL Network's Mike Mayock slots Perry at No. 27 overall.

Among the seven round mock drafts, TE/FB Rhett Ellison looks like a Saturday selection probably in the 5th round.  DT DaJohn "Juicy" Harris is the other Trojan who should expect to hear his name called as he has been linked with teams in the 5th and 6th rounds.

USC boasts the most NFL first round picks of all-time with 75 and the most players drafted by the NFL all-time with 473.

Best of the Best

The top four men's volleyball teams in the country make up the MPSF Tournament field at Galen Center this weekend and that's before the actual NCAA Final Four takes place at the same venue a week later.

Ciarelli-Galen-UCI-PC.jpgNo. 1 USC men's volley will play a rubber match against No. 2 UC Irvine at 7:30 p.m. Thursday after the Trojans and Anteaters split the regular season series.  The first semifinal pits No. 3 Stanford versus No. 4 BYU.  The final is Saturday at 7 p.m.

At stake, the best four teams in the nation will fill half the Final Four spots (one automatic and one at-large).  If the Trojans do not win the MPSF Tournament, they should be favorites for the at-large spot, but a win over Irvine Thursday would clinch the argument.

Bill Ferguson has his program on one of the great runs in NCAA volleyball history.  The Trojans are a combined 46-8 the last two seasons (.852 winning %), which prompted this feature on the head coach.

USC has made the Final Four two of the previous three seasons, but the program is still searching for its first NCAA crown since 1990.  Riding an 18-match win streak, the Trojans' goal is simply to maintain the momentum for two more weeks in front of a partisan crowd at Galen Center.

On Friday, No. 4 USC women's tennis upset No. 1 UCLA to clinch a share of the Pac-12 title in Westwood, but No. 1 USC men's tennis had its 45-match win streak snapped by the rival Bruins in front of a capacity crowd at Marks Stadium.

Next up: Both teams head to Ojai for the Pac-12 Championships.

Here's a look at the Marks madness via John McGillen as the sensational seniors enjoy a touching tribute before a stunning loss...

Happi-Lee Ever After

The Marqise Lee story does not have a rosy beginning.  The wide receiver cleared more than a few life hurdles en route to becoming a Freshman All-American at USC.

The OC Register's Michael Lev recently wrote a brilliant profile on the athletic wunderkind and his Blind Side beginnings.

And then, ESPNLA.com's Pedro Moura followed it up with a feature of his own on the often overlooked but never overcome Lee.

Lee has no athletic ceiling, but life tried to cave the roof in on him at an early age.  Every step of the way he responded with his trademark work ethic and toughness.  Now, he is running to nothing but daylight.

2012 Hall of Fame: Bryan Ivie

The countdown continues to the 2012 USC Hall of Fame induction dinner on May 12.  The black tie gala is open to the public and NFL Hall of Fame WR Lynn Swann will be the emcee.

In a year when men's volleyball is in dominant form as the No. 1 team in the country, Bryan Ivie is fittingly headed to the USC Hall of Fame.  The current Trojans are riding the program's longest winning streak since the dominant era of Ivie.

He is USC men's volleyball's only two-time National Player of the Year and led the Trojans to national championships in 1988 and 1990.  He was the NCAA tournament MVP in 1990.

Ivie still sets the standard in the Trojan record books as the all-time leader in career kills and blocks.  The two-time Olympian won bronze in Barcelona as part of an accomplished professional career.

In Tony Ciarelli and Alex Jupiter, USC boasts the reigning conference players of the year in both men's and women's volleyball for the first time ever in the same school year.

Ciarelli, who is the favorite to earn national player of the year honors just like Jupiter, joins Murphy Troy as back-to-back MPSF MVPs and the only two Trojans to ever win the award.

If Ciarelli does get the nod for AVCA National Player of the Year as Troy did in 2011, USC will be the first men's volleyball program to ever win the award in back-to-back seasons with two different athletes.

Of course, the next wave is on the way.  Micah Christenson was named Freshman of the Year by the MPSF joining Brook Billings in 1999 as the only Trojans to be so honored.

Gauntlet Update: Tied for Tennis

The crosstown rivalry standings are tied at 40-40 with a pair of tennis dual matches on tap Friday.

No. 1 USC men's tennis will look to sweep the season series over the Bruins as the Trojans are one win away from a perfect regular season.  The festivities get started at 3 p.m. with a senior salute to Steve Johnson and Daniel Nguyen.

Meanwhile in Westwood, No. 4 USC women's tennis is trying to get over the hump after dropping the first two matches to No. 1 UCLA this season.  The most recent fixture came down to the final singles contest, so the young Women of Troy know that they are gaining on the Bruins.

USC has won the last four Gauntlets, but the 2011-12 rivalry is down to the final competitions.  Come out to support the Trojans in our never ending quest to Beat the Bruins!

No. 1 USC men's volleyball senior captain Tony Ciarelli was selected conference player of the year by the MPSF today.  Freshman setter Micah Christenson was named the MPSF Freshman of the Year.

Ciarelli has been a revelation in his senior season leading the Trojans from a 5-4 start to a 22-4 regular season record on the strength of a 17-match winning streak.  In the process, he broke the program's career ace record for the rally scoring era.

Ciarelli and Christenson are supported by middle blocker Steven Shandrick on the All-MPSF second team, while libero Henry Cassiday, freshman middle blocker Robert Feathers and opposite hitter Tanner Jansen.

By helping to grant McClain's wish, Kyle Negrete's dream came true.

As the Make-A-Wish kid chased the USC punter around the Coliseum field, photographer John McDonough caught an indelible image which made it to the pages of this week's Sports Illustrated.  Negrete tweeted out the photo with a caption.

"It's pretty surreal to say I'm in the latest edition of Sports Illustrated with RG3 on the cover.  I dreamed of being in this magazine when I was a little boy.  I love the Trojan Family!  God is good! And McClain is the best!"

USC student-athletes and athletic department staff were treated to a lecture today by Kevin Starr, the world's foremost expert on California history.

Ciarelli-Starr-Haden.jpgStarr, who spent a decade as the California state librarian, was the first USC professor to be awarded the National Medal of Humanities.  He has taught at Troy since 1989.

A fourth generation Californian, Starr's Golden State lineage dates back to 1852 just two years after the state was officially founded.  However, it was not until writing his thesis at Harvard that Starr discovered the wonder of his home state which would end up defining his career.

Among the many topics touched on, Starr credited California for the democratization of sport.  In the 19th century, sports like golf, tennis and swimming were reserved for the elites in the Northeast, but California brought them to the people and raised the level of competition.

USC men's volleyball captain Tony Ciarelli (pictured with Pat Haden and Professor Starr) is currently taking his class.  "He is one of those professors that if you put all the topics into a hat and pulled one out, he could give you an hour lecture on the spot," Ciarelli boasted about Starr.

What will it mean to you to represent your country in the 2012 London Olympics?

It is an amazing feeling to be able to represent my country in the 2012 London Olympics.  I think every athlete's dream is to participate at the Olympics one day.  I can't wait to put on my Hungarian uniform and run 42.2 km on through the streets of London.  It is a dream come true!

What do you do to pass the time when you are running?

My runs are between 70-120 minutes, so I have enough time to think about a lot of things.  I usually listen to music, which helps me keep my mind off of the actual running and usually 10-15 minutes just disappear. A lot of times I look at my watch and wonder where the past 15 minutes have gone.  There are also times when I plan where I'll go during the next run or which loop I am going to take or which direction I will turn, etc.  So most of the time, if I am lucky, it is just me and my run having a great time.  But when I am struggling well, then I am looking at my watch all the time and trying to charm my watch to show that it is time to finish my run...but it never works!

Life After Baseball

USC baseball boasts a hundred Major League players and counting.  While the program is proud of those that excel at the next level, the Trojan way is to prepare for life outside of the uniform.

Flores-broadcasting.jpgRandy Flores has used Dedeaux Field to launch both his careers.  The left-hander spent 15 years in the pros after Mike Gillespie gave him the chance to walk-on at USC.

Now, he is looking to work his way up from the bottom in the broadcasting profession.  The World Series winner is serving as a volunteer color analyst alongside student broadcasters on USCTrojans.com to get a feel for life behind the microphone.

"I need to have a second career, an actual career," Flores told the Arizona Daily Star. "I'm not one of those guys looking to fill time."

Pairs In, Trojans Out

Sand-Volley-Team-LMU-Huddle-PC.jpgHowever, despite a strong resume, the Trojan team was left out in favor of Long Beach State.  The Final Four also includes Pepperdine, Florida State and College of Charleston.

In head-to-head competition, USC took out the 49ers (4-1) on the road, but dropped a dual match (3-2) this past weekend at a tournament in Hermosa Beach.

Overall, the Women of Troy boasted a 7-4 record to LBSU's 5-4, while playing a much more difficult schedule.  The Trojans traveled to Florida for a tournament in Tallahassee against the Final Four bound Seminoles, while the 49ers never left the Pacific.

The NCAA does not hold championships for emerging sports, so the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) was the deciding factor.

Global Trojans

The USC athletics' web extends across the global sporting landscape with recent alums Joel Dennerley and Murphy Troy representing their cardinal and gold heritage in far and distant lands.

Dennerley, a four-time NCAA water polo champion at Troy, is eying a spot in goal for the Aussie Sharks 2012 Olympic team.  The 2011 National Player of the Year was featured on the Australian Water Polo site as an all-star selection for the UNSW Wests Magpies.

Meanwhile in Italy, 2011 men's volleyball National Player of the Year Murphy Troy (poster below) has become a star attraction for Andreoli Latina.  His club team is in the Serie A semifinals against Trentino Volley.

USC women's basketball seniors Jacki Gemelos and Briana Gilbreath were selected in the third round of the WNBA Draft today.

Gemelos, picked No. 31 overall by the Minnesota Lynx, endured five ACL reconstructions at USC before fulfilling her lifelong dream of being drafted by a WNBA team.  Her remarkable story of perseverance was told by Baxter Holmes in the LA Times.

Gilbreath, who was drafted No. 35 overall by the Washington Mystics, started all four seasons at Troy as a versatile guard.  She can make an instant impact as a gritty defender who ranks fourth all-time at USC in blocks and sixth in career steals.

The Worldwide Leader

USC home football games will be heard exclusively on ESPN Radio nationwide as part of a new multi-year agreement.  The pact is the first of its kind for the worldwide leader and a college football program.

710-ESPN.jpg"USC and the Trojan football program are extremely excited to have all of our home games carried nationally by ESPN Radio," said Pat Haden, USC's Charles Griffin Cale Director of Athletics' Chair. "To partner with ESPN Radio and have the USC brand distributed at this level is a fantastic opportunity to reach Trojan fans throughout the nation.  It is also immensely important that we will be able to reach our Hispanic fan base throughout Southern California with ESPN Deportes."

ESPN Deportes Radio, the country's first and only 24/7 national Spanish-language sports radio network, will broadcast every USC home and away game in the Los Angeles market.

"We have had a long relationship with USC which has proven to be an excellent one in many ways," says Tim McCarthy, Sr. Vice President, ESPN Radio Play by Play & Talent Planning. "We will work closely with USC to develop ancillary marketing opportunities to touch USC fans everywhere."

ESPN Radio will present USC games on up to 300 affiliates nationwide, including the flagship station 710 ESPN, which carries the signal from San Diego to Fresno.

Two-Way Talent

USC baseball announced the signing of Bishop Amat senior Rio Ruiz, an elite pitching and third base prospect, who could be a program changer if he puts off Major League Baseball for a three-year commitment to Troy.

Rio-Ruiz-Amat.jpgHe is rated the No. 18 player in the country by Perfect Game USA, but Ruiz is considered by many the top two-way talent in the high school ranks.  He made several All-American teams as a junior.

"As one of the premier hitters in the country, we are extremely excited to have this young man join our program," said head coach Frank Cruz. "Rio's lifelong dream was to become a Trojan, so we are very happy to see that dream come true. He and his family are very committed to the college process and earning a degree at USC."

Last year, he hit .455 with 14 doubles and three homeruns.  He will sit out his senior season recovering from an injury.

6-Points: 2012 USC Spring Game

The defense defeats the offense 34-27 in a no-tackling scrimmage.  With spring practice officially over, here were the six biggest storylines...

Click here for a Spring Game recap and stats.

  • Tre Madden - The linebacker turned running back was the positive headliner of spring until he blew his knee out and became the biggest setback for a team in need of power and depth at tailback.  The injury changed the tenor of scrimmages which are now devoid of tackling and could be in the fall as well.  "It was just a fluke play that I wish I could take back," Madden described the non-contact injury for the first time today.  "I'm going to be in running back meetings, so I can get mentally focused on the position, so when I come back, I'm not a rookie again.
  • USC-Legends.jpgGeorge Farmer - The highly touted wide receiver was supposed to be the breakout star of spring after flashing his talent in the first week.  Instead, Farmer strained a hamstring and sat out every scrimmage until today when he made a couple live catches in the Coliseum.  "It was a little challenge [from Coach Kiffin], so I faced up to it and came out to see what I could do," said Farmer about Kiffin's comments earlier this week about pushing himself.  "Coming out and being named an MVP [of practice] and then getting injured the next practice was very disappointing.  It was frustrating."
  • Backup QBs - Kiffin did not name Matt Barkley's number two today, but both Max Wittek and Cody Kessler have been impressive.  Kessler made the best throw of the day completing a 44-yard TD pass to Soma Vainuku.  And in a surprise move, Jesse Scroggins, who sat out most of spring dealing with injuries and academics, led a series today.  "It was definitely a learning experience," Kessler said about spring.  "We're all competing at the same time and every day."
  • Interceptions - The secondary proved to be a group of veteran ball-hawks with two more picks today by Brian Baucham and Drew McAllister.  The defense returns the entire starting back seven defensively and it showed.  Plus, CBs Isiah Wiley, who had five pass deflections today, and Baucham, who intercepted Barkley, improved greatly during the offseason.
  • Thumbnail image for Fan-Autographs-Spring.JPGOffensive Tackles - C Khaled Holmes and OGs Marcus Martin and John Martinez solidified their spots on the starting offensive line this spring.  For now, RT Kevin Graf and LT Aundrey Walker are Barkley's outside protectors, but both tackles struggled with the Trojans' speedy defensive ends.  "We got ran by on a couple third down pass rushes which has been an issue for us," Kiffin said about today's performance.  The head coach has preached patience with Walker, who continues his adjustment to the left side.
  • The Legends - What other program can bring back greats like Ronnie Lott, Marcus Allen, Junior Seau, Anthony Munoz, Sam Cunningham, Keyshawn Johnson, Tony Boselli and Willie McGinest?  The great eight (pictured above) are walking football history and the current players understand the Trojan legacy.  "For me to be able to meet him and shake his hand is an honor," T.J. McDonald said about fellow safety Ronnie Lott, who expressed his admiration for T.J.  "This is DB U.  It's an honor for me to be even considered in the line with [Lott, McDonald Sr. and Polamalu]."

Two-Point Conversion...

  • LB Tony Burnett and RB D.J. Morgan, who broke off a 47-yard TD run, were the defensive and offensive MVPs of the Spring Game.
  • Attendance was 15,515 and the fans rushed the field for autographs after the game (pictured).

Note: Today's men's tennis match was cancelled due to rain.  The dual match vs. Cal was rescheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m.

They used to say the only person who could stop Michael Jordan was his college coach Dean Smith (by benching him).  Well, the only thing that can slow down No. 1 USC men's tennis these days is rain.

If the weather breaks, the Trojans will begin a tough three-match home stand today against No. 12 Cal at 1:30 p.m.  Steve Johnson and company will then take on No. 11 Stanford tomorrow at 1 p.m.  The regular season finale is next week against UCLA at Marks Stadium.

Both matches are FREE to attend and include FREE food trucks for the spectators.

Ace Up His Sleeve

Tony Ciarelli has put on a serving exhibition this season that is unmatched in the USC men's volleyball record books.  Having already broken the rally scoring era career ace mark, he smacked 11 aces in last night's three-set win over Long Beach State to break the MPSF and Trojan all-era single match record.

No. 1 men's volley is now 21-4 overall with 16 wins on the trot.  If the Trojans defeat Cal State Northridge Saturday, they will clinch the regular season conference championship.

Spring Practice #14: Notes

The final practice of spring is in the books as the Trojans prepare for Saturday's Spring Game...

  • Out for Saturday: TE Randall Telfer, LB Dallas Kelley and LB Marquis Simmons.
  • Hopefully in for Saturday: CB Ryan Henderson and WR Victor Blackwell.
  • Josh-Shaw-McG.JPGFlorida transfer Josh Shaw had his hardship waiver approved by the NCAA, so he is eligible to play for the Trojans this fall.  "This is like the happiest day of my life," said a beaming Shaw, who sat out this spring with a rib injury suffered during weight training.
  • Shaw provides added depth to the defensive back corps which is already loaded.  "My goal is to be a starter here for the Trojans.  I think I'll start out playing safety and then they'll move me around to see where I fit best."
  • He has spent the spring taking mental reps on and off the field.  Shaw's roommate is T.J. McDonald and the two talk football into the night.  "That guy, he knows football," Shaw said about McDonald.  "We were up until 1 a.m. last night going over football.  I pick his brain as much as I can."
  • Lane Kiffin on Shaw (pictured by John McGillen): "It's good for the team obviously, but because he's such a neat kid...I'm really happy for him."
  • Practice was filled with interceptions again.  The veteran secondary has put a lot of pressure on an injury-riddled offense this spring.  "The defensive backs are extremely improved," Kiffin said.  "They are playing by far better than they have ever played since we were here."
  • Kiffin provided some info on the Spring Game.  The Trojans will not tackle in an effort to "stay healthy."
  • Also, the coaches will be calling plays from the sidelines instead of behind the huddle, which Kiffin said will be another evolutionary step for backup QB candidates Max Wittek and Cody Kessler.  Matt Barkley will play Saturday though.
  • General Spring Game info: Parking lots open at 8 a.m.  Gates open at 12:30 p.m. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.
  • Here is Kiffin on a quiet practice...

Rivers-Nascar-PG.jpgRivers, who was picked 9th overall by the Bengals in 2008, spent much of his time in Cincinnati plagued by injury including the entire 2011 season.  However, he is excited about a fresh start on the big stage.

"I just haven't been able to stay on the field as much as I would like," Rivers told NFL.com. "Hopefully, it's a new beginning and everything is behind me and I'm ready to do it on the big stage here in New York."

A member of the illustrious group of USC linebackers to wear No. 55, he will be reunited in the Big Apple with former Trojan teammate Terrell Thomas.

No. 4 USC women's tennis is on its best run in nine years thanks to an influx of freshmen talent led by No. 1 singles Zoe Scandalis and No. 3 Sabrina Santamaria, but the pressure matches have fallen on the third member of the 2011 recruiting class, Gabriella DeSimone.

DeSimone-UCLA-McG.JPGTypically on court No. 5, DeSimone has clinched seven dual match victories for the Women of Troy, which is five more than anyone else on the team.  The highlight win came in a match-decider over No. 5 Cal at Marks Stadium in February.

However, like any freshman, she has been forced to learn some tough lessons as well this season.  The Trojans' 4-3 loss to UCLA on March 1 came down to her three-set match against Chanelle Van Nguyen, which went 6-3 to the Bruin.

With nearly a full season under their belts, the young Trojans will finish off the regular season campaign with a gauntlet of dual matches against No. 6 Stanford, No. 10 Cal and finally No. 1 UCLA.  With a trio of tight road matches expected, keep your eyes on DeSimone to cast the swing vote.

Our own Dave Dulberg made a plea to the students and Trojan Family to show support for No. 1 men's volleyball on its push for the program's first national championship in 22 years.

USC fans can provide a huge spark in men's volleyball's run since the Trojans are likely to host the MPSF Tournament before the Galen Center presents the Final Four.  Bill Ferguson's team can shore up that home court advantage starting tonight at No. 8 Long Beach St. and then the regular season finale Saturday at No. 11 Cal State Northridge.

Led by Tony Ciarelli (center), men's volleyball is on an unlikely 15-match winning streak.

To Return or Not to Return?

As you will see this fall, the NCAA has changed the kickoff rules to encourage more touchbacks and fewer returns in an effort to avoid the serious injuries caused by the violent full-speed collisions.

The kickoff spot has been moved up from the 30 to the 35-yard line.  And, touchbacks will be brought out to the 25 instead of the 20.

Lee-KOReturn-UW-PC.jpgUSC special teams coach John Baxter has several dangerous returners at his disposal, including Robert Woods and Marqise Lee, who have kickoff return touchdowns on their Trojan resumes.  However, he will spend some time this offseason doing the math on whether or not it is worth it to bring the return out of the end zone.

"The new rules in college football are going to make it really interesting," said Baxter.  "Do you run them out of the end zone or not?  I don't know.  We'll see."

The rule change could be a boon for USC defensively.  Under Baxter, the Trojans have not allowed a punt return for a touchdown, but they have given up three kickoff returns for touchdowns.

Women's lacrosse is in first place for the annual Service Champions award given to the USC athletics' program that performs the most community service per student-athlete.

Lax-Kid-Stick.JPGHere is the story on lacrosse's recent journey to the Sage Center in Watts written up by Ceilidh Meagher...

On April 5, the USC Women's Lacrosse team traveled to the Sage Center in Watts to hold a clinic for the students there. Some of the kids had participated in an earlier clinic held at 'SC in November, and they even remembered the team and were eager to try lacrosse again.

We started with the basics by teaching everyone how to cradle the ball, and how to scoop up a ground ball. It was funny to watch some of the littler kids run around with lacrosse sticks that were clearly intended for someone twice their height!

Hoops Adds Brendyn Taylor

6'2" guard Brendyn Taylor is the third man signed to USC men's basketball's 2012 recruiting class.  The Fairfax HS product averaged 18 points per game as a senior and could offer outside shooting relief for the Trojans.

Brendyn-Taylor-Fairfax.jpg"Brendyn has a great upside," said head coach Kevin O'Neill. "He is an athletic wing whose best days are ahead of him.  He is going to be a major plus both on and off the court."

Taylor has a strong pedigree with his father Brian playing 10 years in the NBA and ABA, while his brother Bryce played recently at Oregon.

Recruiting coordinator Bob Cantu called Taylor "a sleeper" since he sat out his junior year of high school and missed part of his senior year due to CIF transfer rules.  He is the latest member of a recruiting class which should provide a scoring boost for an offensively challenged team last year.

The Trojans signed G J.T. Terrell, the top junior college prospect in the country, and Serbian F Strahinja Gavrilovic in November.

The defense dominates on a turnover Tuesday...

  • Injury list: CB Ryan Henderson (out), LB Dallas Kelley (out), LB Marquis Simmons (out) and TE Randall Telfer (out).
  • Blackwell-Woods-sprac9-McG.JPGWR George Farmer is still limited to individual drills, but Lane Kiffin urged the young talent to push himself to return this week.  "A lot of times with young guys, they are scared to go when they can be doing more than they are," Kiffin said about Farmer and Buck Allen.
  • Robert Woods has shut it down for spring at the behest of the coaches and trainers who want him to fully recover.  He feels his ankle is strong enough to practice, but no one wants to see the problem linger any longer.  The plan is for Woods to return in July.
  • (Photo of Woods coaching up Victor Blackwell by John McGillen)
  • Woods is celebrating his 20th birthday today.  "I'm still young," he said with a smile.
  • The defense forced four interceptions Tuesday.  Jawanza Starling and Anthony Brown returned picks for six.
  • Kiffin expects turnovers to be a strength of this year's defense which he described as "fast," but "undersized."  "They have really good ball skills in the back seven to make a bunch of significant plays."
  • The Mater Dei connection provided the most impressive offensive highlight.  Max Wittek perfectly placed a 55-yard bomb in Victor Blackwell's arms for six.
  • We have not talked much about special teams this spring, but Peter McBride taking over for Chris Pousson at long snapper is a story that coach John Baxter is hoping nobody notices.  "We're working on him never being interviewed," said Baxter, who knows long snappers only get attention for mistakes.  "He's a good player.  The only thing he lacks is game experience."
  • Kyle Negrete is the incumbent at punter, but Kris Albarado is pushing him from behind.  "As a coach you never say a job is closed," Baxter explained.  "If the challenger can beat the champ, then the challenger plays.  If it's close, the tie goes to experience."
  • Andre Heidari is coming off a sterling freshman season, but his trimmed down body is proof that he's avoided complacency.  "He's really bought into the program of strength training," Baxter said.  "He's increased his power."
  • Here is Lane Kiffin at the start of the final week of spring ball...

A pair of USC baseball alums made sparkling 2012 debuts yesterday.  Left-handers Barry Zito and Tommy Milone combined for 17 shutout innings to earn wins for their respective clubs.

Zito pitched the Giants to their first win of the season with a complete game 4-hit shutout.  It was Zito's first shutout in nine years on the heels of an offseason that he spent training at USC.

In just his fifth major league start, Milone managed to deal 8 scoreless frames despite not striking out a single batter in the A's 1-0 victory.  He was traded to Oakland by the Washington Nationals in the winter.

USC legends Willie McGinest, Sam "Bam" Cunningham, Tony Boselli, Anthony Munoz, Marcus Allen, Keyshawn Johnson, Ronnie Lott and Junior Seau will attend the Spring Game this Saturday.

Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
Tickets available for $10 at GetTrojanTix.com or the Coliseum box office on the day of the game.

How illustrious is that elite eight of Trojans?

All eight were first round draft picks led by Keyshawn Johnson who was the No. 1 overall selection in 1996 (pictured).  The group made the NFL Pro Bowl a combined 50 times led by Seau (12x), Munoz (11x) and Lott (10x).  And, they won nine Super Bowl rings with Lott (4) and McGinest (3) carrying the load.

No. 4 USC women's tennis is in the midst of its best stretch since 2003 as the Women of Troy dusted the Arizona schools this past weekend to make it nine consecutive dual match victories.

The Trojans are now 7-0 in Pac-12 play.  However, USC has played five of the seven conference matches in the friendly confines of Marks Stadium.

The Women of Troy will close out Pac-12 play with three brutal road battles at No. 6 Stanford, No. 9 Cal and No. 1 UCLA.  The Trojans only two losses this season have come at the hands of the rival Bruins.

The young squad, which starts three true freshmen, can lean on the experience of senior Alison Ramos who was celebrated for her four years as a model student-athlete at her last home match this past Saturday.

Spring Practice #12: Notes

A beautiful day at the Coliseum as the players get to show off in front of friends and family...

  • New injuries: WR De'Von Flournoy suffered a high ankle sprain getting tackled from behind.  TE Junior Pomee reaggravated his foot injury.  The Trojans did not tackle today in an effort to stay healthy.
  • Lane Kiffin on Tre Madden's season-ending knee injury: "Extremely disappointing.  He was probably one of the most valuable players on our team because...we don't have anybody like him."
  • Kiffin announced that Madden will stay as a running back when he returns from knee surgery.  He compared his running style to "LenDale White with a little more speed."
  • "I think he would have been really special," said RB coach Kennedy Polamalu about Madden.  "People have come off the ACL and done well, so it's just lucky we have a redshirt year."
  • McNeal-Sprac9-McG.JPG"That's how I tore mine just making a cut," said D.J. Morgan, who is finally back to full speed more than two years since knee surgery.  "It's just devastating, especially when you are about to go on and do good things."
  • Who is going to step up and fill out the depth chart behind starting RB Curtis McNeal? Buck Allen had his best day as a Trojan.  "Today gave me confidence," said Allen, who is still battling a nagging hamstring issue.  "A teammate went down, so I knew I had to step up.  I could have taken the day off but I didn't."
  • "We don't know very much about him," Kiffin said about Allen.  "We're going to need somebody whether it's him or whether it's Nelson [Agholor] coming in."
  • McNeal and backup D.J. Morgan are not exceptional receivers, so Agholor will at least provide the option as a pass-catcher out of the backfield.  Plus, he brings the Wildcat element.
  • Morgan has been under the radar since Madden's emergence, but he's back to full speed and learning the system at an advanced level.  "When you can play fast, everything comes easier," said Morgan about the mental side of the game.
  • Neither McNeal (pictured by John McGillen), Morgan nor Agholor are big backs, so the Trojans are still searching for short yardage options.  According to coach Polamalu, FB Vainuku is a "natural" runner.  He broke off a long run today and then caught a TD pass from Matt Barkley. "He's better than I ever was, but I told him that I was pretty good," Polamalu joked.
  • On the defensive side, CB Brian Baucham is having a strong spring as he returns from academic ineligibility.  "In the classroom, I feel like this was my best semester ever," said Baucham.  "Becoming a man is kind of a process, but I'm finally getting the big picture."
  • Curtis McNeal returned from academic probation to run for 1,000+ yards last season.  "I look up to him as a brother and as a friend," said Baucham.  "He's a good role model who showed that when you fall down, you get up.  And when you get up, you show what you can do."
  • Here's the full story from Lane Kiffin after a shortened scrimmage at the Coliseum...

Returning the Favor

A night after giving up a one-run lead in the 9th inning to Cal, USC baseball fought back to steal a 2-1 walk-off win over the Bears on James Roberts' 2-RBI single with the Trojans down to their final out.

Senior right-hander Andrew Triggs kept USC alive by throwing a complete game and giving up just one run.  After Roberts' heroics, Triggs earned the victory as the Trojans moved to 13-3 at Dedeaux Field this season.

The rubber match is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.  Here's Frank Cruz on the character of his team after a special bounce back victory...

Men's Volley - #1 vs. #2

No. 1 USC men's volleyball is hosting the showdown of the regular season as No. 2 UC Irvine comes to Galen Center Saturday night at 7 p.m.  Admission is FREE to anyone wearing USC gear.

The match-up of the nation's top two teams could be a precursor to the Final Four, which will be held at USC May 3-5.  Tickets to the NCAA Semifinals and Championship are now available.

Riding a 14-match winning streak, the Trojans will celebrate Senior Day this Saturday as well.  Captain Tony Ciarelli is hoping to celebrate his final regular season home match by breaking the school record for aces in the rally scoring era.

Currently, Ciarelli is tied at 143 career aces with 2011 National Player of the Year Murphy Troy.  The best of the bunch came last week against Pacific when he pegged a serve off an opponent's face as the first of three consecutive aces.

National Student-Athlete Day

In conjunction with the NCAA, USC athletics celebrated National Student-Athlete Day to acknowledge the student-athletes with cumulative GPAs of 3.0 or better.

Of the 623 student-athletes, 255 (40.9%) meet or exceed the mark.  And, 86 student-athletes sport an exemplary 3.5 cumulative GPA or better.

USC's newest sports are making an early statement in the classroom.  Sand Volleyball has a team GPA of 3.26 (the highest among sports in competition), while women's lacrosse debuted a 3.44 with all first semester freshmen.

Women's tennis is excelling on the court as the No. 4 team in the country as well as hitting the books to the tune of a 3.23 GPA.

The qualifying student-athletes were treated to a pancake breakfast this morning.  Here are golfers Martin Trainer, Lisa McCloskey and Inah Park enjoying the spoils of their efforts...

Bad news out of yesterday's practice as RB Tre Madden is lost for the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee.

Reminder: Saturday's Coliseum scrimmage is free and open to the public.

Madden Out for Season

USC RB Tre Madden tore a ligament in his left knee during yesterday's practice.  The injury will force him to miss the 2012 season after he undergoes surgery.

The injury occurred without contact as Madden attempted to plant and cut off his left leg.

Madden had been the story of spring football after switching over from linebacker to fill a need as a power running back and thriving in his new role.  The Mission Viejo product was also reprising his high school role as a Wildcat quarterback.

He played in all 12 games at linebacker and special teams as a true freshman including one start against Colorado.

A Coxswain's Courage

Written by Dave Dulberg, USC blog contributor

In rowing, a coxswain's ability is not measured by physical strength but rather by having the tools to lead through commands. Often known as the master of the vessel, the coxswain is the strategic voice that guides a rowing team through rough and competitive waters.

For the USC women's rowing team that voice has come from five-foot Dionne Licudine over the past three years.
licudine4.jpg

Heading into 2012, all signs pointed to a highly successful campaign after the team finished off last season with a fifth place finish in the NCAA Championships.

That was until the night of Feb. 3, when their vocal leader encountered the must unexpected fight of her life.

"I went to the hospital that night complaining of severe abdominal and back pain," Licudine recalled. "I was admitted a short time later for what was supposed to be a simple surgery since they told me I had gallbladder disease. But, it didn't quite turn out that way."

After her initial surgery on Feb. 6, doctors came back with some bad news for Licudine, a native of Manila, Phillippines. During the procedure, she had suffered major complications, including blood loss and massive internal bleeding. While initially the hospital believed blood transfusions would fix the issue, Licudine would eventually be rushed to the Intensive Care Unit for a second surgery. And on Feb. 10, a week after she first went in for a check-up, the highly sedated senior went under the knife one final time to close up her abdomen and to make sure there was no other damage.

"I don't think we realized how serious it was at first," said coach Zenon Babraj. "Then when we started hearing about major blood loss, it was clear to us that this wasn't just a question of whether she would return to rowing, this was a fight for her life. It's moments like that where sports just don't matter much."

After seven days in the ICU, Licudine was finally moved to what she called "a normal floor." However, she was by no means out of troubled waters.

Further tests revealed that on top of gallbladder disease, Licudine suffered from Acute Renal (Kidney) Failure. She would not only be forced to stay under hospital care for two more weeks, but there was a serious possibility her rowing career was in danger.

A short practice ends with a thud as Tre Madden limped off with an apparent knee injury.

  • USC RB Tre Madden, who has been the story of spring football, was helped off the field after going down with an apparent left knee injury on a non-contact play.  The severity of the injury is unknown.  "There's that concern any time with knees when guys can't really walk afterward," said Lane Kiffin. (Photo of Madden by John McGillen)
  • Madden-sprac8-McG.JPGInjury report: S Drew McAllister (hip), S T.J. McDonald (limited), Buck Allen (mostly out), TE Junior Pomee (out but expected to practice Saturday), TE Randall Telfer (reaggravated hamstring), LB Marquis Simmons (came out during practice).
  • TE Xavier Grimble practiced for the first time since week one of spring football.  "It felt better than I thought it would," said Grimble, who was out with turf toe.  "[The tight ends] all kind of went down [this spring]."
  • Practice had a little extra spirit today as the winner of the turnover battle got out of conditioning drills.  The defense won the day with interceptions by CB Isiah Wiley and LB Tony Burnett.  "Always a good day when you get to pick off Matt Barkley," said Wiley.
  • Burnett has been moved to linebacker from defensive back.  "It looks good so far," said Kiffin about the move.  "He's actually bigger and stronger than Dion [Bailey]."
  • Cody Kessler threw his first interception of spring practice.  In fact, he almost got picked twice.  LB Anthony Sarao dropped one before Burnett made Kessler pay for an errand throw.
  • With Torin Harris out, Wiley is the starting corner opposite Nickell Robey.  He came on last year in a pinch after injuries riddled the depth chart.  "I feel a lot more comfortable a year into the system," Wiley said.  "I am playing a lot faster.  With less thinking comes more action."
  • Wiley and Harris will compete to start in the fall.  "Competition makes everyone better," said Wiley, who is up for the challenge.
  • "The tackles are a work in progress," said Kiffin about Kevin Graf and Aundrey Walker.  However, Walker is basically unopposed at left tackle right now so it's more a case of getting him used to the position than Walker losing his job.
  • Kiffin is happy with the production and depth on the interior offensive line.  He emphasized the improvement of guards John Martinez and Marcus Martin.
  • The Trojans were visited by half a dozen Marines from the Wounded Warriors West Battalion at Camp Pendleton.  The group spoke with Matt Barkley, Khaled Holmes and Lane Kiffin after practice.
  • Here's more from Kiffin including his thoughts on the new John McKay Center...

Trojans in Business: Tyler Wilson

Here is the first in our new series on former student-athletes succeeding in the business world...

Wilson-Restaurant-McG.JPGName: Tyler Wilson

Resume: Co-owner Wurstkuche Restaurant

Sports at USC: Water Polo and Swimming

How was Wurstkuche born?

We opened in 2008.  We wanted to open a bar, but we realized quickly that that wasn't going to happen in the traditional sense.  We started brainstorming what we could do exceptionally well that fits a niche to combine a great experience and food that hasn't been done this way.  Sausage has always been done in a tier two or three capacity and not an A-level.  We set out to do a premium gourmet and exotic sausage grille.  From there, we moved towards German and Belgium beer, which created this German brand, and we realized we had a beer hall on our hands.  We've opened two stores and are quickly working on a third.

Being a young guy fresh out of USC, how much did you take into account your young clientele's limited budget yet foodie taste buds?

WurstKuche-McG.JPGWe had a goal to pair the best sausages with the best beers in the world, but we still wanted somebody to be able to get a beer and a sausage for less than $10.  A group of people can come together for a party, but since everyone pays individually, each person can scale to their budget, but everybody has the same great experience.

How does playing for Jovan Vavic and Dave Salo translate to the business world?

It's almost as hard as going to a Jovan [Vavic] practice or [Dave] Salo sprint workout.  Jovan had my number from day one.  He's a really great guy outside of the pool, but he's a whole different kind of Serbian on the pool deck.

Do you take extra pride in creating a successful business just down the street from USC?

I love seeing USC students in here.  It is really great being a part of the Trojan network.  I have spoken to some of the entrepreneurship and business classes at Marshall.  One of the classes actually comes to me once a semester and we have beers here.  The current students seem to really relate because I'm only a couple years older than them and they see that it's totally doable.

Plus, there's a shot of the view out of Lane Kiffin's office which looks over the football practice field.  And, several of the offices are dedicated to former student-athletes like Sam Cunningham, Mark Sanchez and Keyshawn Johnson who generously donated to the project.

As Major League Baseball officially celebrates opening day, USC is in full swing with a big three-game home series against Pac-12 rival Cal beginning tonight at 6 p.m.

Among the reasons to go, MEGG will play a pregame concert starting at 4:45 p.m. Friday evening before the 6 p.m. first pitch.  Students will also get FREE hot dogs that night.

To improve the stadium experience, we are updating the USC GameDay app to include Dedeaux Field.  If you have already downloaded the app, just perform the latest update when you're notified.

The game story of the weekend will revolve around USC pitching coach Dan Hubbs, who came to Troy this season after 12 years at Cal.  He has paid immediate dividends reducing the team ERA from 5.25 last season to 3.48 so far this year.

Hence these signs around Heritage Hall...

Olympic Spotlight: Rebecca Soni

Name: Rebecca Soni large_sonigold728.jpg

Age: 25

Hometown: Plainsboro, NJ

Events: 100m and 200m breaststroke, 400m medley relay

Resume: 2008 Olympic gold medalist and two-time silver medalist; three gold medals at the 2011 World Championships; current world-record holder in 100m and 200m breaststroke (short course); 2009, 2010 and 2011 American Swimmer of the Year.

Q.) Since your coming out party at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, what has life been like for you?

There's been a lot going on for me, both in the pool and outside the pool. If you remember, after the 2008 Olympics, I still had another year at USC. I was only a senior. Once I graduated, I got right in to the professional side of the sport, with sponsors and promotional appearances. It's been a lot of fun, but it has also been a whirlwind for me. As soon as 2012 hit though, I got really excited. This year, it's all about business and staying focused on what's to come.

Q.) As one of the faces of the sport in this country, how do you go about getting fans excited about swimming?

It's a growing sport and even since I've started competing, I feel like it's grown. A lot of that has to do with Michael Phelps and people's interest and him, but that's good for all of us. From my conversations with fans, I don't have to do much selling. You'd be surprised how much more people know today than they did maybe four or eight years ago. We would love to get all of our big competitions on TV though, to show everyone that there are still things going on with the sport outside of the Olympics.

Spring Practice #10: Notes

The bodies are starting to get healthy and a pair of old stars filled out the reserve ranks...

  • Injury report: LB Dion Bailey (dental issue), TE Junior Pomee (out but no break in his foot), RB Buck Allen (out), WR George Farmer (limited), TE Randall Telfer (limited) and TE Xavier Grimble (limited).
  • DWill-Turner-McG.JPGNFL WRs Damian Williams and Patrick Turner (pictured by John McGillen) returned to Troy to help fill out the depleted numbers at wideout and give the quarterbacks a professional look.  "Just another example of Trojan players helping each other out," said a thankful Lane Kiffin.  "It was good to have those guys out here."
  • The team got a boost from the return of C Khaled Holmes and FB Soma Vainuku.
  • We got our first look at Tre Madden in the Wildcat today, but the running back never actually aired it out.
  • Matt Barkley tossed a pair of long touchdown passes to Marqise Lee and De'Von Flournoy.
  • S Demetrius Wright was named the MVP of the day by Lane Kiffin.  He acknowledged Wright's work on special teams and gave Jawanza Starling's backup some first team reps.
  • Perhaps motivated, Starling flattened WR Victor Blackwell for the biggest hit of practice.
  • Young defensive tackles J.R. Tavai and Antwaun Woods are impressing the coaches.  Tavai is small for the position, but "the size issue with J.R. is not showing up," said Kiffin.  Woods was one of the stars of last Saturday's scrimmage.
  • Staying on the defensive side of the ball, the young linebacker trio is starting to grow up.  "I'm trying to build myself into becoming a leader, so when the older guys are gone, I can step up and fill that role," said Hayes Pullard.
  • MLB Lamar Dawson is the youngest of the group, but the Kentucky native is a natural born leader.  "He came in as a leader," Pullard said about his teammate.  "He came in and dominated at school as well as on his playbook.  He's growing up as well as all of us."
  • The linebacker room has a new lead voice in coach Scottie Hazelton.  "He's just as energetic [as Joe Barry]," Pullard said.  "He teaches a little bit more, but they are pretty much the same."
  • Kiffin credited DB coach Marvin Sanders for Demetrius Wright's improvement, so the new assistants are making their mark.
  • Here is Lane Kiffin on a beautiful Tuesday evening...

Forging Ahead

The USC baseball march continues into April this week as the Trojans return home to Dedeaux Field, where they are 11-2 this season, to face Pepperdine (tonight at 6 p.m.) and Cal (Thursday-Saturday).

If you go to the evening games tonight or Thursday (also 6 p.m.), the game coincides with football practice, so you are welcome to watch both from the Mark Prior Plaza.

The Trojans split a pair of games at Washington State this past weekend in freezing temperatures.  In fact, snow forced the final game of the series to be postponed to May 15.

Head coach Frank Cruz credited Dave "Pops" Scott and the equipment team for helping his squad survive frigid conditions.  He also tweeted this photo of a masked Trojan in Pullman.

2012 Trojans to Haiti

Fifteen USC football players will travel to Haiti the week after graduation to build houses and deliver supplies to a country destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake in 2010.

Haiti-Photos.jpgThe team of Trojans will build a minimum of three houses and transport more than 2,000 lbs. of supplies for orphanages and schools as part of the May deployment of Hope Force International, an organization which specializes in quick strike disaster relief.  The troop departs May 14 and will live in Haiti until May 19.

Matt Barkley and his family spearheaded this venture but his teammates have rallied behind the cause.  Fellow captain T.J. McDonald leads the list of volunteers joining the Barkley family along with Robert Woods, Khaled Holmes, Nickell Robey, Devon Kennard, Hayes Pullard, Kyle Negrete, Scott Starr, Josh Shaw, Cyrus Hobbi, Kevin Greene, Max Wittek, Cody Kessler and Luke Freeman.

The student-athletes can receive help to pay for this trip, so if you would like to make a donation to this cause, click here to give to Hope Force International's USC deployment.

Haiti-Child.jpg"This is something I've talked about with Matt [Barkley] since I was a freshman," said Devon Kennard, who will graduate after only three years on May 11.  "I just wanted the opportunity to serve people in need alongside some of my closest friends.  It's going to be a blessing to those Haitian people, but this experience will be just as valuable for us."

The Trojans will be aiding the Sous Savanne community in Haiti, which in many cases has been relegated to living under tarps as the only shelter.  Houses, bathrooms and supplies are of vital importance.

The USC student-athletes know that this will not be a vacation of any kind, but they are looking forward to a week of hard work in a part of the world foreign to most of them.

"I have never been out of the country," Kennard said.  "I have to get a passport.  I don't know what to expect and that's what is kind of exciting."

Stay tuned to the blog for more coverage on the Trojans' trip to Haiti...

Community service is an emphasis of the USC athletics' experience with student-athletes performing more than 3,000 hours of outreach in 2010-11.  Already in this school year, Trojans have given their time to great causes like the Community Bowl, Give Running, iStandAbove and many others.

Cover Girl Kessy

Beach volleyball pair and Trojan indoor alums Jennifer Kessy and April Ross are expected to contend for gold at London 2012.  The duo are only ranked behind legends Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh on Team USA and slotted fourth overall in the FIVB world rankings.

Plus, Kessy was recently announced as one of the faces of the Olympics for CoverGirl.

"I have always dreamed of being a CoverGirl," she told People magazine.  "I remembered all the times I stared at the ads in the magazines, and remembered that CoverGirl always writes the names of the models in their ads. I couldn't believe my name was going to be next to my picture in a magazine. Best feeling ever!"

Coliseum PA

At the annual spring football game on April 14, USC athletics will audition select public address announcers as part of our ongoing effort to update the football game day experience.

Dennis Packer's voice has proudly boomed through the Coliseum for more than two decades.  He likely will return as the voice of the Trojan Marching Band announcing the pregame and halftime shows.

But going forward, the department is taking a look at the possibility of a new voice to usher in the latest era of USC football.  The final decision will be made later this summer.

Game Ball

Tennis head coaches Richard Gallien and Peter Smith hit their milestones this weekend.

Gallien made it 300 wins at USC as the women's team swept Oregon and Washington at home this weekend to make it seven consecutive dual match victories.  Peter Smith needed less than 10 seasons to rack up 200 wins as the Trojans did not drop a single match in wins at Washington and Oregon.

Smith even got to keep the game ball...
