Spring Practice #7: Notes

Some injured players are starting to filter back into the rotation as spring football nears its midway point...

  • DT Cody Temple will have ankle surgery, which puts him out for the rest of spring.  However, after moving from offensive line to defensive line, he proved to be "strong at the point of attack," said Lane Kiffin.
  • WR George Farmer was back on a limited basis and should return fully soon.
  • TE Junior Pomee, who was dealing with a family matter, returned to practice today.  He is an impressive physical specimen who is built like a tight end but moves like a receiver.
  • Injury report: CB Ryan Henderson (out), C Khaled Holmes (out), RB Buck Allen (out), FB Soma Vainuku (out), TE Xavier Grimble (out) and TE Randall Telfer (out).
  • flournoy-OCReg.jpgFor the second straight practice, Lane Kiffin singled out WR De'Von Flournoy (photo by OC Register).  The redshirt junior has toiled in obscurity for most of his USC career, but he is taking advantage of all the spring reps with only three scholarship receivers in the rotation.
  • "[I'm] answering the call," Flournoy said.  "I'm having opportunities that I didn't have before.  I would love to be out here balling with my boys, but when my number is called, I'm running to the huddle."
  • While Robert Woods and Marqise Lee will be the focal points of the passing game, Flournoy hopes to fill the veteran role vacated by Brandon Carswell.  "Carswell called me on the phone after he left and said, 'I don't want you to wait until your last year to try to make an impact.  Try to fight for positions with those guys.  Don't just fall to the back.'"
  • Carswell considered transferring before returning to fight for a spot.  Flournoy would never dream of leaving USC.  "Of course not.  I have been 'SC since I was a sophomore in high school.  I want to graduate from here."
  • Flournoy and Victor Blackwell got a bit of a respite with the return of Marqise Lee.  The players and coaches are still marveling at his ability to win the long jump amid spring football.  Barkley commented on "how high" in the air Lee was in the photo we posted on the blog.
  • Of the inexperienced defensive linemen pushing for a rotation spot, redshirt freshman Greg Townsend Jr. has been the most impressive.  He caught a batted Max Wittek pass for a pick-6 today.
  • RB Tre Madden fumbled again today, which Kiffin said "is a normal thing that happens" to a runner adjusting to the college game, but the head coach is still impressed by the powerful tailback's ability "to flash" in every practice.
  • Here is an abbreviated session with Kiffin who had to return to his head coaching responsibilities...
