Spring Practice #1: Notes

The first of 15 spring practices is in the books on a chilly and windy Tuesday night.

  • Thank you for joining us on the Facebook live stream of practice.  We're working on improving the video speed so we can show more highlights.
  • Injury report: DE Kevin Greene (limited), S Josh Shaw (out with a back issue), OT Nate Guertler (out with a hamstring), QB Jesse Scroggins (reaggravated hip injury), WR Robert Woods (limited), TE Xavier Grimble (left during practice) and TE Junior Pomee (left during practice).
  • Likely out for spring: CB Torin Harris , DT Christian Heyward, TE Christian Thomas, P Kyle Negrete, DE DeVante Wilson and OL Chad Wheeler.
  • Prep-Not-Hype.jpgThe new message painted on the field is "Prep Not Hype."
  • WR George Farmer was named the MVP of the day by Lane Kiffin.  He also made the play of the day going up over CB Isiah Wiley on a deep sideline bomb.
  • Kiffin on Farmer: "The way he caught the ball and his confidence was very different than the last time we saw him."
  • Farmer will get added first team reps with Robert Woods easing back from offseason ankle surgery.  "My goal is just to be ready for the first game and make sure I'm healthy," said Woods, who carried the ankle injury throughout last season.
  • The offensive line is starting to take shape.  The guards and center remain intact from last year, while Kevin Graf moved from right tackle to left tackle.  Aundrey Walker, who has lost 63 pounds since January 2011, will start spring as the right tackle.
  • Graf knows that he has big shoes to fill replacing Matt Kalil, the likely No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft.  "He's a great player and I'm looking to be a great player," Graf said.  "[My confidence] definitely grew last year, especially after the Notre Dame game."
  • Walker's dramatic weight loss has put him in contention for a starting spot.  "I feel quicker, more explosive," he said.  "[The weight loss helps] as far as conditioning, stamina and being able to finish every block."
  • Cody Kessler and Max Wittek will split the backup reps equally as they vie to be Barkley's No. 2.
  • Kiffin called the running back depth "scary."  While Curtis McNeal is entrenched as the starter, the coaches still want to push him to develop his arsenal of skills during spring ball.  D.J. Morgan and Buck Allen are the only scholarship reserves.
  • The Trojans are back on the field Thursday evening.  Here's the full Kiffin presser from night one...
