No. 4 USC men's volleyball hosts No. 3 UCLA at Galen Center Friday night at 7 p.m. in the "Crosstown Rivalry," but the Trojans will show due respect to legendary Bruin head coach Al Scates as he nears the end of 50 remarkable seasons in charge.
Scates (photo by Tiffany Cheng), who won 19 national champions in Westwood, will retire at the end of this campaign. He has won more than 80% of his matches and boasts the best record among all Division I volleyball coaches.
The late, great Jim Murray wrote, "Al Scates?! Precisely. The one and only. The man who is to volleyball what (John) Wooden was to basketball, (Red) Sanders was to football, Napoleon to artillery..."
The Trojans will have a special pregame presentation (get in your seats early!) for Scates before they eschew the pleasantries and try to hand him one more loss. It is a rivalry after all.
