USC women's lacrosse will make its long awaited debut a year from this week. The inaugural season will open with an early February weekend set against national power Northwestern and UMass.
Until then, head coach Lindsey Munday and her staff continue build the foundation of the program with the players already at Troy and lay the recruiting track for the future growth of the team. Women's lacrosse has only 10 players on the current roster with 15 to 17 new arrivals expected this fall.
Of the 12 scholarships allotted to the program, Munday plans to spread the wealth to build out the depth chart. "You can shut down one or two players, but you cannot shut down an army," she said.
The toughest task is keeping the current student-athletes engaged. The roster consists of 10 players that train like champions, but are forced to wait for their moment in the sun.
"This year is going to be the hardest with so much practice time and so few rewards in terms of games," said Munday, who has set up scrimmages with the USC club team and local college Occidental.
Munday will depend on this unit to provide leadership, so she is focused on "keeping them into the values of what we want. These girls are getting to do the firsts of the program, so it is sort of trial and error some times."
In addition, Munday and assistant coach Devon Willis are continuing their playing careers with the U.S. National Team. They made the 24-woman roster for this summer's pre-World Cup tour of Canada in the hopes of making the final cut to 18 for the 2013 World Cup just outside of Toronto.
