From the USC Sports Information Department...
Popular long-time sportswriter Loel Schrader, who was inducted into the USC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007, passed away early today from complications with pneumonia. Services are pending.
He covered college football since 1947 as a well-decorated sportswriter,
columnist and sports editor in the Knight-Ridder chain, including many
years at the Long Beach Press-Telegram. He had a particular
affinity for USC football, having covered the Trojans since the John
McKay era in the 1960s. In 2006, he co-authored "Fight On!
The Colorful Story of USC Football," a definitive history of the Trojan
football program.
Although he was retired in recent years, up through this past football season he still followed the Trojans as a contributor to various USC publications and websites.
Loel was well loved and much admired by Trojans everywhere. He will be missed. Condolences go out to the Schrader family.

Loel Schrader was a great sports journalist who had immense influence on so many of his readers and co-workers.
He is the "godfather" not only of the sports "notes columns" and was the man most responsible for the the coverage of college recruiting.
I would not be a sports writer if not for his influence on me when i was just a reader and then as a co-worker.
Mr. Schrader was a kind, knowledgeable writer. When he encountered an unpleasant circumstance,he wrote the truth, but with a touch of humanity. He had a great sense of humor, and all of us that played at USC from Long Beach always looked forward to his bylines and columns.
