As Matt Barkley enters his fourth and final year as a starter, head coach Lane Kiffin wants to continue to push his quarterback by expanding his responsibilities in the huddle and at the line of scrimmage.
"Anytime that the quarterback can become an extension of you as a play-caller, and he can do the things you want him to do without you having to (tell him), you're going to be better," Kiffin told the OC register. "Anytime you can get to that level with someone, you're going to be better. We're going to try to give him more stuff to challenge him and make us better."

Kiffin also explained that Barkley was ready to make more calls at the line of scrimmage last year, but the youth on the offensive line precluded the quarterback from making sophisticated audibles. The Trojans will return four starters on the offensive line next season.
