USC tennis does not have any time to enjoy the spoils of team success with NCAA singles competition beginning today in Palo Alto.
Men's #1 Steve Johnson (pictured) is the favorite to win an individual national championship, while teammates Daniel Nguyen and Ray Sarmiento are in the draw. Johnson is looking to become USC's first singles champion since 1996.
On the women's side, Maria Sanchez is seeded second and sophomore Danielle Lao will join the 64-team field. Sanchez could face Cal rival #1 Jana Juricova in the final.
Both squads will send doubles teams into the NCAA brackets. Sanchez will join forces with Kaitlyn Christian, while Valeria Pulido and Alison Ramos are in the draw.
Despite pairing with different teammates in yesterday's team final, Johnson and Sarmiento will battle together for a national doubles' title.
