Spring Storylines: Tight Ends

Telfer.JPGEven more, this foursome is tied together by a tremendous work ethic led by senior Rhett Ellison.

"These kids, they work harder than everyone I've been around since I've been at SC," said Ellison about Xavier Grimble, Christian Thomas and Randall Telfer (photo by John McGillen).  "It's easy for me because they just want to do it.  They show up, suit up, shut up and just go."

Unless he lines up at fullback, Ellison will start at tight end this season, but the freshmen trio should all get opportunities.

Grimble is the best blocker.  Thomas is the explosive down field threat.  Telfer combines size and athleticism.

While the group is self-motivated and refers to the unit as "a family," they have a new fiery position coach in Justin Mesa, who took over for Keary Colbert.

"Mesa is awesome," Ellison said.  "He's high energy.  He knows the offense as well as anybody and all the techniques.  He's really helping us out."

Grimble missed most of the fall season with injuries, but he has shown off his playmaking ability this spring to go along with his tremendous size and physicality.  Here is the redshirt freshman talking about his developing skills...
