Each day, they always seem to walk out together.
Devon Kennard, Chris Galippo and Shane Horton are the three returning contributors at linebacker, but they have yet to participate in any spring practice. Instead, they work on their rehab inside Heritage Hall and join the team for the last hour or so.
Kennard was moved to middle linebacker last season, while Galippo went into the 2010 campaign as a utility player. As Kennard's adjustment process slowed him down at times, Galippo surged into the "Mike" spot.
Horton earned back-up reps until Malcolm Smith went down with an injury and then starred at Stanford in the senior's stead.
If they were healthy, they would all be slated to start in the spring game given the current make-up of the roster.
Instead, Will Andrew, Ross Cumming, Hayes Pullard (photo by John McGillen), Marquis Simmons and others have taken the reps as they battle for back-up consideration at the very least. While Andrew had an impressive interception streak going, converted safety Dion Bailey is the rising star at the position.
Bailey, who missed some time with a forearm injury, will need to bulk up before fall camp begins, but he has the sideline-to-sideline speed and coverage ability to add some much needed playmaking to the corps.
Here's a chance to meet the redshirt freshman Dion Bailey...
