Community Service Record

For three straight years, the Trojan Athletic Senate (TAS) has set the record-breaking goal of 3,000 community service hours to be performed as a department.

In 2010-11, they hit the mark!  And they are still going...

Cameron-Hosp.JPGThe student-athletes have already dedicated 3,160 hours to the community this year and they will play a huge role in Saturday's "Swim With Mike" charity event.

"From the time our student-athletes are recruited, we have emphasized to each the importance of not only earning their degree and competing in varsity athletics but also the opportunity to grow as men and women while they are at this institution and the importance of giving back to the community in which we reside," said senior associate AD Magdi El Shahawy, who is in charge of Student-Athlete Academic Services (SAAS).

The TAS laid down the challenge and the student-athletes responded by coming up with new ideas to serve the community, including completing 23 projects like "A Day in Troy."

As part of "A Day in Troy," which took place over two dates this year, student-athletes from nine different sports reached out to over 5,000 kids in the Los Angeles area.  Besides a day of autographs, campus tours and a women's basketball game, the kids were taught lessons about the importance of outreach, education, decision-making and living an active lifestyle.

"Many of the local kids have never been to USC or a college campus," said academic counselor Kyle Ross.  "With the power and global allure of USC, they get to come to a very special place and interact with our student-athletes, many of whom have overcome similar socioeconomic hurdles to thrive as Trojans."
