Bubble Talk

Do the Trojans need to beat Arizona tonight to make the NCAA tournament?

The most important bracketologists, currently filling out the Dance invites in Indianapolis, will not reveal their verdict until Sunday evening, but the big websites have gotten good at predicting the field.

As we speak,'s Joe Lunardi has USC as the second team OUT of the tournament.

The bad news for the Trojans is that many of the other bubblers have yet to burst in their conference tournaments.  Yesterday, Colorado, Michigan State, Georgia, Boston College, Memphis and New Mexico took care of business.

As you know, upsets tend to happen this time of year (see Oregon shellacking UCLA last night for evidence), which could take up spots in the field.

Here's the good news: USC controls its own destiny.

Three weeks ago, the Trojans were not even on the radar.  Now, they are in the thick of the discussion.

They changed their fate by beating quality teams (five wins against the RPI top 50) and finishing strong (6-1 in the last 7 games).  If USC can stay hot tonight and knock off another top team in Arizona (RPI #18), they will move to the better side of the bubble.

Even more, they'll be one win away from the Pac-10's automatic berth and the peace of mind to rest easy on Selection Sunday.
